An art installation located in Cologne, Germany by Marco Hemmerling.

In it we see reflecting fragments of surrounding buildings. While you move around the sculpture, the reflections on the glass constantly change and you become part of the installation with the buildings reflecting in the background. At night the installation is lit from within with colors and distorting film.

Clams Casino

In this most strange and unfamiliar year in music, 2009, few artists got as weird as Jersey’s own Clams Casino. His beat for “I’m God” was a liferaft that even Lil’ B couldn’t sink, becoming one of Z2H’s very favorite songs of the year despite the (ahem) less than stellar rapping. Make no mistake, Z2H has love for The Based God– he could have stepped it up here, but still, the song managed to simultaneously capture a kind of restless manic energy as well as a “pure moods” zen vibe that resulted in one of the most interesting listening experiences of the year. Shortly after the release of “I’m God,” Clams dropped his mixtape, “Oh, Jam” a collection of bizarre, bass heavy sonic experiments that can’t honestly claim any one genre as its own. Rounding out the year with collaborations with Havoc (of Mobb Deep) among others, Clams Casino has established himself as a producer to look out for in the coming years. Like his namesake dish, Clams Casino may be an acquired taste, but if you can dig it, there’s no doubt that you’ll be sticking around for seconds.

With the music industry re-structuring itself, and trying to build a new economic model in light of the “download era” do you feel like there is more or less of an opportunity for young up and coming producers such as yourself to break through?

I think now is a great time for up and coming producers.  With the industry adjusting to the downloading and whatever else happening right now more and more major artists are kinda being forced to put out a lot more music and free music, which is a great opportunity for unknown producers to get heard.  If somebody’s planning on putting out a free digital mixtape, even if they are an established artist, I would think they’d get the bulk of that production from guys that are coming up and willing to give them hot tracks for cheap or nothing but exposure.

If you could get a free punch to the throat on anyone in history, who would it be and why?

HAH…“We the Beas—aachhch!!!” That could end up as a good sample for you to use, because on a lot of your beats you implement vocal samples, but in a non- traditional way. On several Clams Casino tracks, human voices are warped into something completely different. Can you explain how you approach a vocal sample and how it contributes to your sound?

A lot of that stuff comes from just whoever is hanging around in the studio and I will tell them to say whatever they want or make a stupid noise into the mic and keep it in a folder.  so like sometimes if I go blank tryin to make something I will just give myself little challenges like, I will think to myself if you can take this 5 second clip of this kid making a fuckin dolphin noise or whatever and make it really crazy you are dope haha. And most of the time it comes out hot and funny and a lotta people like it more than the shit that I spend hours on

Who or what are the Za kids? What does it means to be “za’d out”?

The za kids are definitely not rappers if u can’t tell haha.  It’s just me and a few of my boys having fun.  Something I feel strongly about is that if u start to take yourself too seriously or stop having fun with it you are fucked! “za’d” or “Za’d out” we just use for really anything it doesn’t have much of a meaning but I guess most commonly for being very drunk

If you could invent your own “fat” sandwich on those New Brunswick Grease trucks, what would it have on it?

I only had one of those.  Not down there, though.  But it was called a Fat Egyptian and I will never eat another one again haha they are just too much. So there will be no invention. I’m tryin to come down to the Varsity in ATL I saw it on the Travel channel…

What’s your production setup like? Specifically, what software/equipment do you use?

Right now im using only software, I use mostly acid pro and sometimes reason.  When I first started I had a little hardware sampler (Yamaha su200) that I really loved.  And I think the first software I started using was Fruityloops.

Down South, we have to deal with the occasional redneck. In Jersey, Guido’s are the de facto pricks, Have you ever had any notable Guido run-ins?

Oh god. My entire life is a guido run-in.  But I have to admit I will be forever closely affiliated with these fools so unfortunately I must embrace the lifestyle haha.

Your mixtape, “Oh, Jam” destroyed my car-system. What influenced your heavy use of bass? Will you go halves on a new subwoofer for my trunk?

That’s funny because Mikey who runs DigitalDripped.com told me kinda the same thing, that he almost blew his windows out on his truck with a za kids joint.  I don’t know I actually didn’t think that the bass was too outta control on most of those tracks, maybe it’s just the setup and the speakers that I make them on.  It must be pretty different from what people r listening to them on, like I don’t have a nice system in my car. YET.  And yes I’ll go half on this subwoofer but my next tape will have a disclaimer on the back so I’m not responsible. That one’s all on you.

What’s your favorite video game console of all time?

That’s a tie between super Nintendo and Sega Dreamcast I think.  I actually just ordered a brand new Dreamcast online, I’m waitin for that this week.

Describe a perfect day in the life of Clams Casino?

It will start by waking up and checking my email to find out that an artist has recorded on one of my beats less than 6 months after the day they first said they were going to use it.

“I’m God” is one of Zone2Homebrew’s favorite tracks of the year. How did you hook up with Lil’ B? Was he as ridiculous as his lyrics/twitter would suggest?

Lil B really connects with his fans and makes sure that he is accessible to them which I think is cool.  I reached out to him last year on Myspace back when he had only about 14 music pages haha.  But na when I do talk to him from time to time he just seems like a normal and good dude.

The Imogen Heap sample used on “I’m God” was twisted into something completely different and wonderful. You’re not one to flip a sample straight up. What’s the Clams Casino philosophy on making music out of music?

Sometimes I will actually just flip a sample straight up, but I would say that it’s usually when an artist just wants to keep the same exact feel or pretty much just remake the original track.  Like I’ve had people send me a song to check out, and I’ll cut it up too much or try to make it my own too much and when I show them they would just be laughing and telling me not to get carried away haha, then I’ll have to do it over.  A lot of the time I will end up with maybe like 3 totally different beats out of the same sample that might not sound anything alike. If I hear something or stumble across something I wasn’t expecting while freaking a sample ill put it off to the side, save that, and come back to it later and end up with a bunch of different branches of the same sample that can go in so many directions.  So I love to explore like that. For me, it’s about seeing how many different things I can do with one origin.

You recently put out a song, “Always Have a Choice” with Havoc of Mobb Deep. What was it like working with such a legend in the game? Are there any other specific artists you would like to work with in the future?

Yea that was such a surprise for me because how it happened was about 2 years I had sent that beat to Havocs current manager for another artist he was working with, and before he was managing Havoc.  So a year and a half later he just hit me up like that beat you sent me a while ago, Havoc from Mobb Deep used it and its all over the internet with great reviews and all that… and I was shocked haha. It was out for I think 2 weeks before I even knew about it. But yea it’s really an honor.  I would really like to work with Cam’ron.

If you could hit the strip club with any former US president, who would it be?

Nixon

Your music has drawn comparisons to hyphy. Is that intentional? Are there any hyphy artists that influence your sound? How have you made that sound your own?

I wouldn’t say it’s intentional, like I wouldn’t sit down and think about it before I make something. I guess it just comes out.  I wouldn’t call them hyphy really, but the pack is one of my biggest influences without a doubt. But their music stems off of it I think. I just love to listen to shit with a lot of energy.  That’s what really gets me motivated to get in the studio.

Are there any new artists out there that you’re working with who we should be on the look-out for?

I’ve been working with Sha Stimuli for a while.  He’s an amazing artist. Real lyrical.  He just goes crazy.  And also check for Loaded Lux.

You armed with a small gas-powered chainsaw and an arena of your choosing vs. a grizzly bear…who walks away?

I don’t know I guess that depends on if I have any gas in it, hah!
