The four dudes of Thai Rockband Retrospect are breaking down the borders for the first time since their start. They’re on the bill of the next Wacken Open Air in Germany. Nothing special? Well, consider the fact it’s their first trip to the continent, the festival attracts about 70.000 guests and it has been sold out ever since november last year. Are they up for succes? A quick/small recap of their career so far, so even the people who don’t know them can easily get to know them.

Retrospect is a band residing in Bangkok, Thailand. Ever since their start in 2000, the boys – or guys – from Retrospect have been able to astonish people with their own Retrorian style. (Retrorian is also the name of their fanclub and the song Yes Sir! is kind of their fanclub chant :p) Their first EP called For Your Ears Only got released through ScreamLab Records in the summer of 2003. It immediately gave attention to the young band and an English Demo called For Your Ears Anytime was a fact. Not that much later they got signed by Genie Records, a GMM Grammy subsidiary and one of the leading Thai record Labels, and were able to put out their first full-length Unleashed in 2007. Their first DVD: The First Concert, showed the boys in their natural habitat and showed a lot of their talent by letting them do duets and featurings with other Genie stars as Da Endorphine and Tao from Sweet Mullet

More recently, in July 2008, came the follow up to their debut: Rise and in December of the same year they released their second DVD/VCD of the new tour called Rise Now! They easily end up in the Thai charts with their music-videos and singles and often stand out in-between the more Pop-orientated Thai culture. Retrospect took Thailand by storm and will not rest before the rest of the world has heard of them. Like I said before, they’re booked for the giant Rock-festival Wacken Open Air in Germany and so their popularity outside Thailand can only start to increase. (They’re playing on the 31st of July, second day of Wacken between Tristania and Mago de Oz on the Party Stage)

Thailand is multicultural. Pop, Rock and Rap easiy go together and are incorporated in the same song. Retrospect tries grabbing the best things out of every genre and put them together at their live shows. Either classical VieTrio, beatboxing Chin Chinawuth or pop rocking Da Endorphine are easily mixed into Retrospect’s harder music.In their latest DVD they even featured one of their youngest fans: Poom, screaming along with Singer Nap’s screams. That said, Nap’s screams are sure to give everyone goosebumps and the vocal parts are easy to sing along to. Now all we have to do left is study Thai and get to know what they’re actually singing about.

O gótico designa uma fase da história da arte ocidental, identificável por características muito próprias de contexto social, político e religioso em conjugação com valores estéticos e filosóficos e que surge como resposta à austeridade do estilo românico.

Este movimento cultural e artístico desenvolve-se durante a Idade Média, no contexto do Renascimento do Século XII e prolonga-se até ao advento do Renascimento Italiano em Florença, quando a inspiração clássica quebra a linguagem artística até então difundida.

Os primeiros passos são dados a meados do século XII em França no campo da arquitectura (mais especificamente na construção de catedrais) e, acabando por abranger outras disciplinas estéticas, estende-se pela Europa até ao início do século XVI, já não apresentando então uma uniformidade geográfica.

A arquitectura, em comunhão com a religião, vai formar o eixo de maior relevo deste movimento e vai cunhar profundamente todo o desenvolvimento estético.

Rock Gótico:

O rock gótico é um subgênero do rock e música característica da subcultura gótica, inspirado essencialmente na atmosfera decadentista pós-punk e em sua emergente estética.
Embora originalmente considerado um rótulo para um número pequeno de bandas de rock/pós-punk, o rock gótico possui, hoje, um espectro bem maior – abrangendo em si o Death Rock, a Música Industrial e até algumas bandas da new wave, por exemplo. Enquanto a maioria das bandas punk focava um estilo agressivo, as primeiras bandas góticas eram mais pessoais e introvertidas, com elementos de movimentos literários como horror gótico, romantismo e niilismo.

As primeiras bandas consideradas góticas foram: Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Joy Division, etc. Embora, como já foi dito, nem todas aceitem de bom grado o termo. O Bauhaus é considerada a banda pioneira do estilo. Surgiram em meados de 78. Bela Lugosi is Dead é um épico com nove minutos de duração, seu single foi lançado pelo selo independente Small Wonder. Bela Lugosi foi um ator que ficou marcado pela interpretação do clássico Drácula, de Bram Stoker.

Apesar de não ter sido exatamente um sucesso de vendas, a música definiu tudo aquilo que seria o rock gótico (guitarras fálicas distantes do resto dos instrumentos e um vocal que se mistura a todo o resto como que solto no espaço), e se manteve nas paradas independentes da Inglaterra por anos e anos.

Como já foi dito, a ausência de cores e o inconformismo vinham da desconfiança no futuro, graças ao período nuclear da guerra fria, da cortina de ferro, e de crise econômica.

Como se pode ver realmente, uma situação propicia para obscuridão e não para louros! A voz e os trejeitos de Peter Murphy, onde se via um comportamento meio glam (influências diretas dos primeiros álbuns solos de Iggy Pop, produzidos por seu amigo David Bowie) é uma presença forte e contribuiu para o culto da banda.

O primeiro álbum do Bauhaus foi In the Flat Field, mas o segundo, de 81, Mask, revelou uma maior ambição musical dos pais do gothic rock. Os elementos eletrônicos, metais, misturados à já conhecida fórmula dark gerou um álbum considerado por alguns como ainda melhor que seu predecessor, e que teria dado origem ao que alguns chamam de darkwave.

Ainda e talvez entre as bandas mais conhecidas, até pelos não aprofundados no cerne gótico, além de Bauhaus, estejam ainda The Cure e Joy Division.
O gothic rock/darkwave é com certeza a música e um dos elementos que mais caracteriza a cena gótica. Mas com a sua evolução outros estilos musicais foram se integrando mais à subcultura e se fundindo mais a ele, que embora possam às vezes ser abordados de maneira distinta já parecem também coisas inseparáveis uma das outras.

Quando exportado para os americanos o rock gótico chegou da Inglaterra para se tornar o death rock. Na Inglaterra a Batcave, club centro da disseminação desse estilo, abrigava noites regadas ao som de bandas como o Specimen e o Bauhaus. Nos Estados Unidos o estilo também ganhou várias casas e uma contraparte típica, o Christian Death.

Talvez por isso os dois estilos sejam tão inseparáveis e se diz que são irmãos que se detestam, mas se amam no fim das contas. Mas as bandas como essas podiam se encaixar perfeitamente no rótulo gótico. Enquanto que o death rock, como é conhecido hoje, é povoado de zumbis, humor negro, carnificina, ferimentos, necrofilia e todo tipo de brincadeira com a morte, inspirado em filme de terror de orçamento baixo. Exemplos de bandas são: Misfits (também ligados ao punk rock), 45 Grave, Zombina and the Skeletones, Cinema Strange (Ver Death rock).

Retrospect has posted another video on their youtube account. For the people who hope to see some footage (Except for like a few seconds in the beginning), I have to disappoint you. It’s just a 7min interview (in thai) about Wacken I suppose. Can anyone translate? :p

It’s been nearly a month since Thai Rockers from Retrospect performed on the big Wacken Festival in Germany, and still we can’t really find any footage of the concert. I’m trying my best to show you things, but they’re not making it easy for me.

The guys of Retrospect, however, are releasing things little by little, and I hope that we won’t have to wait very long anymore before we’re able to seen footage of their European Debut!

What could the wacken version possibly be? I hope that they played the Run in their Encore. At least those lucky bastards at Wacken got Pror Wa Ruk, Yes Sir! and Mai Mee Ter. I’m filled with envy.

After these whole two weeks of searching the net, finding absolutely no footage of their Wacken performance, I came across some comments and noticed the band has made quite some impact.

People calling Retrospect their highlight – knowing there were over 200 bands on the festival site – and saying they have to come to England – or any other place in the world – and tour. As well as comments on Last.fm Stating they should tour the world together with label-mates Sweet Mullet. Now all we are wondering about is: why won’t they?

I also couldn’t keep myself from posting this thingy. It looked like they had some fun, will it mean they’ll do anything to return?

Thai Rockband Retrospect’s trip to Wacken is over and I’m here to tell you something.

Bummer. As far as I’m concerned the guys of Retrospect did great on this year’s Wacken festival. Though I have to admit I wasn’t even there, I haven’t found any clips on the internet and I’m just biased. For now I’ve only seemed to be able to find a little note. It’s just them talking in some not-understandable Thai and I believe greeting and thanking the European audience.

You can expect more when I find it as I’m willing to spread some Retrospect-love!

Eh, a trecut o săptămână de atunci şi doar acum mi-am făcut ceva timp să ajung să spun şi despre festivalu’ de anu’ ăsta. Au cântat Opeth, Subscribe, Tristania, My Dying Bride, Nightwish şi Pain. La ăstea 2 zile am stat, că în ultima seară a fost ceva demonstraţie cu focu’ şi la Cisnadioara în cetate au cântat Luna Amară, dar io eram deja la Bucureşti. Ce să spun ? A fost priti. Am făcut puţin şi pe ghidu’ pentru nişte prieteni din Bucureşti. Cu ocazia asta am fost în locuri pe unde nu am mai fost de ani buni. Am fost pe dealu’ Guşteriţei şi am văzut oraşu’ de sus. Am fost la muzee, apoi în turnu’ de la Biserica Evanghelică. Şi am prins deschise şi turnurile de pe strada Cetăţii, which was nice, pentru căăăă, niciodată nu le-am prins deschise. Şi am mers pe pasajul dintre 2 turnuri, lucru pe care dintotdeauna mi-am dorit să-l fac. Am mâncat şi o pizza gigantică şi dup-aia am stat toţi cu burţile pline de bere-n sus. Concertele au fost ok, mi-au plăcut mult cei de la Pain, Opeth, Subscribe şi My Dying Bride. Au fost ok şi cele de la Tristania şi Nightwish, numai că na cel puţin la Nightwish, deşi au făcut show, totuşi a lipsit ceva. Ştiţi la ce mă refer. Şi ce m-a uimit a fost că nu am văzut niciun pogo, e primul an în care nu am văzut aşa ceva. Ţin minte la prima ediţie, în 2005, că intrase la pogo un tip cu o furculiţă, de nu mai lipsise mult să scoată ochiu’ cuiva. Organizarea a fost ok, n-au fost incidente. Şi ce nu mi-a plăcut a fost că au introdus şi aici sistemu’ ăla cu jetoane. Preţurile nu au fost mari, dar era enervant că trebuia să stai la 2 cozi. Am fost în Bucureşti, tot aşa la un festival şi am dat 10 lei pe o bere de 330. Iar aici era 5 lei una de 400, că na, paharele erau de 500, da’ cei care puneau în pahare nu aveau prea mare dare de mână.
Per ansamblu a fost un weekend fain petrecut acasă. Din păcate nu m-am văzut cu toţi prietenii cu care mi-aş fi dorit să mă întâlnesc, că era târgu’ de fete de pe muntele Găina, tot atunci şi ei au fugit încolo. Anu trecut am fost şi io cu ei, da’ anu’ ăsta am zis să stau la tot festivalu’, că şi anu’ trecut s-au suprapus. Mai erau şi nişte omuleţi verzi foarte amuzanţi, care se plimbau pe acolo şi se băgau în pozele oamenilor, îi imitau sau săreau şi fugeau pe acolo. Mie mi-a fost milă de ei vineri, că a fost tare cald şi ei la costumele ălea nu aveau nicio aerisire. Nu li se vedea faţa deloc, parcă erau la musulmani, de fapt nu, că la ăia li se văd măcar ochii. Ăstora nu li se vedea nimic. Dar tot erau simpatici. Ei promovau conştientizarea în legătură cu mediul înconjurător şi aveau treabă cu reciclarea. Dacă vreţi să stiţi mai multe despre ce fac ei, intraţi aici. Ce-ar mai fi de zis ? Well, poze am făcut multe bineînţeles. Pun şi aici, atât de la festival, cât şi din locurile pe unde am fost, deci o să fie ceva.

Simplu, ca n-am fost de fata.

A, cum care Mary? Solista Tristania, Mariangela “Mary” Demurtas. Sicilianca, bre… Aia de care spune tot poporu’ de la Artmania ca a supt, muzical vorbind (sucks, adica), dar a infierbantat imaginatia masculilor din public. Posibil si femelelor, dar n-am la ora asta informatii in acest sens bisexual sau de-a dreptul lesbian.

Acuma ce sa spun, io care nu ma omor dupa blonde, dar brunetele imi infrumuseteaza viata (inclusiv erotica), fata-i di grande. Nimic de spus. Broscutza ar merge fututa ca-n povesti: 3 zile si 3 nopti. Numa ca n-am futat-o din cauza de absenta de la fata locului si, in general, se pare ca frecventam locuri cu sanse 0 de ciocnire.

Ce-ati spus? Ca de unde stiu ca s-ar fute cu mine? Pai e simplu mah, din ce-am aflat, ea s-ar fi futut cu oricine, la Sibiu. Si faptul ca n-a stat din pula-n pula toata durata stationarii in Sibiu, se datoreaza diferitelor cauze, 100% imputabile masculilor in cauza. Cum ar fi: n-aveam unde, bah, nu puteam sa-i las in carciuma pe restul, eram prea beat, eram prea treaz, eram in pana de inspiratie samd.

O sa va intrebati de ce mi-ar placea de-o femeie asa usoara, care s-ar fi culcat cu cel putin 4-5 masculi dintre prietenii mei (mi se face rau cand ma gandesc ca s-ar fi futut si cu prietenii altora). O sa va raspund ca mi-as fi inecat tristetea intr-o sticla de Jameson si as fi reflectat beat muci la soarta mea de futac intre alti futaci ai lu’ Mary. Dar o faceam macar cu ooelele vidate, cu slobozul facand pa-pa de la mine, ducandu-se intr-o lume mai buna.

Chiar, daca as fi fost la Sibiu, as fi iertat-o de un futut cinstit? Nu de alta, poate nu mi-ar fi placut, dar bai, laudatul in fata prietenilor = priceless… Caci da, daca ei, pretenii, cred ca le-a crescut bara de mana, numai ca “era s-o fut, dar….” va-nchipuiti dragii mei (sau ai altora) cum ar fi aratat daca o faceau.

P.S. draga Mary, daca ai citit (sunt convins c-ai facut-o, totusi) cele de mai sus, afla de la mine ca nu te-am desconsiderat deloc, ramai febletea mea… si da, vrei s-o facem?
