I recently posted about the training I have been working on with my two shop dogs, Trooper and Ammo. My original plan was asking them to sit quietly when someone walked into my shop. It started off rather well – but Ammo eventually started barking even more in order to get his “reward” for then sitting. So I decided to take a different approach.

I read up on clicker trainer, Karen Pryor’s, method of teaching opposite cues. In my case I was going to use the Speak and Quiet commands to teach Ammo to be silent when someone entered my shop. I decided that working with Ammo first would be best, as Trooper’s standing on the gate is not as frustrating to me as Ammo’s barking when customers enter.

So last Friday night I set out to train Ammo – starting at home. I was worried if I did it at the shop (and did it wrong) he would just end up barking all the time, and I didn’t want him to associate the shop with any sort of barking. I sat Ammo down infront of me and made a knocking sound on the table – which immediately set him off barking. I clicked him, gave him a treat and as he was eating (in silence) I lurched forward towards him, he sort of lifted one leg and looked at me – I then clicked and rewarded. We repeated this for a while until I was fairly certain he had the gist. I then added some cues to it. For barking I said SPEAK, for silence I said QUIET. I had originally started using BARK as the barking cue, but I quickly realized it sounded too much like Ammo’s BANG BANG cue where he plays dead. When he started flopping around on the ground instead of barking I quickly changed the cue to speak. So we did this process for a while longer then it was time to test it.

I had my husband go outside and re-enter the house (thus creating a situation for Ammo to bark). As soon as he started barking I yelled QUIET. Ammo looked confused for a moment but immediately stopped barking. Click and treats again. We did this a few more times and each time I waited a little longer to reward him. When we were done I carried the treats and clicker around with me for the rest of the night. Anytime Ammo barked at something (usually any noise will set him off) I tried my QUIET cue. I occasionally asked him for SPEAK as well.

The next day it was time to try it at the shop. I opted to have my parent’s keep Trooper for the day so I could work on Ammo without Trooper interfering. The first customer came and Ammo let out a bark – I quickly yelled QUIET from the back of the shop and Ammo came running to me and sat at my feet…what a good puppy. We continued with this throughout the day – and a few times he actually didn’t bark at all (he got rewarded for this big time).

We did and have had a few slip ups where Ammo just couldn’t control himself and it took me a little longer to get him to listen…afterall he is a Dachshund, and if I have learned anything about the breed – its how stubborn they can be. And man can they be stubborn. Below is a video of Ammo “speaking” notice how at the end I try to knock on a table (which normally would of set him off barking) and he behaves nicely by not barking at all.

Overall I think the method is working fairly well. I’m not sure if I will ever eliminate his barking in the shop, but at least now I have a semi-foolproof method to silence him. I’m just going to keep rewarding when he does it correctly and hopefully over time he will only get better (fingers crossed). Next I will have to tackle Trooper’s jumping on the gate!

Helping your kids prepare for clone trooper battles is very easy. Prior to putting the helmet together you will need to adjust the straps on the insertion piece so that it fits to your child’s head. After the insertion piece should simply snap in and be ready to use. It’s a little tricky at first; I myself had to try a couple of times before it came together. After I got everything together all of them were secured and fitted together making a very solid helmet. You don’t have to worry about the batteries, three of them come preinstalled in the helmet.

The Clone Trooper helmet also features several movie realistic details, which include a tinted face visor, spot on clone-inspired colors, and a very sturdy plastic helmet. Hasbro has even included a button that ques radio static keeps communication very realistic and very fund. Some of the movie inspired commands like “Cover Me!” and “Fire at will!” let your kids (and adults) to experience total Star Wars submersion. At first we were a little concerned with the visor but the tinted visor was a heck of a lot easier to see through than we expected, you just have to make sure the helmet is fitted correctly.

I’ve found that as long as the microphone is close enough to the troopers face, it does a great job amplifying statements and commands, and sprinkling in the static that you’d be looking for from a clone trooper accent.

All in all, the clone trooper helmet is a toy that will encourage your child’s imagination and very active and fun play. Don’t be fooled, adults have just as much fun and the kids with this one. This is definitely a must have gift for the holiday season.

Award-winning writer and filmmaker Geoffrey Dunn’s book The Lies of Sarah Palin: The Untold Story Behind Her Relentless Quest for Power will be released by St. Martin’s Press in spring 2010.

Now this should be a good read.  Those that loved Bush and supported his lies are the ones that support Palin and claim she is intelligent and experienced and they are not able to tell when they are being manipulated using God to do it.

Mike Wooten, 37, who still serves as an Alaska State Trooper in Anchorage, called Palin’s book “a pack of lies.”

According to Wooten, Palin and her father, Chuck Heath Sr., have “interfered with my life–and my children’s lives–for at least the last five years. And it is still going on. I’m done with it.”

An independent investigation ordered by the bipartisan Alaska Legislative Council (composed of ten Republicansand four Democrats) and conducted by former Republican prosecutor Steve Branchflower, resulted in the finding “that Governor Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act.”

The report issued by Branchflower documented more than thirty occasions in which then Governor Palin, her husband Todd or members of her staff tried to influence Alaska’s highly regarded Commissioner of Public Safety, Walt Monegan, to fire Wooten. When Monegan refused, Palin fired him instead.

Wooten served 10 years in the Air Force and three more in the Air National Guard Reserves. He participated in a trio of U.S. military operations in the Persian Gulf War–Desert Storm, Desert Shield and Restore Hope–before returning stateside to Alaska at Elmendorf Air Force Base.

Disabled from his military service, Wooten pointed out that neither Todd nor Sarah Palin, or Chuck Heath, served in the armed forces. Wooten said he was particularly “disgusted and incensed” by Palin’s “insincere” dedication in Going Rogue to “our men and women in uniform.”

It is interesting to note that those who have been victimized by Palin during her political career–including former Wasilla police chief Irl Stambaugh; Monegan and himself–were all veterans. “Sarah is only about Sarah,” Wooten said. “She doesn’t care about the ‘men and women in uniform.’ It’s all about advancing Sarah’s career.”

It is also interesting to note that Palin mentions none of Wooten’s military record, but cites many charges that were brought against Wooten that were subsequently dismissed. She contends that there were “ten different” citizen complaints field against Wooten–without acknowledging that all of them were filed by members of her family or close friends. “They filed every stinking one of the charges,” Wooten contends. “But it’s been more like two dozen.”

Palin, Wooten would be one of those you always call a hero, and he served our country.  Why would you attack one of our heros unless you are a terrorist supporter.  Are you anti-American, Palin?

John Cyr, the former Alaska Public Safety Employees Association Executive Director, confirmed Wooten’s charges:

“Not one complaint has ever been made about Mike Wooten’s professional performance from any member of the public other than the Palin/Heath family and their closest friends. The troopers that I’ve talked to that have worked with Mike tell me Mike is the kind of guy they’d go through a door with. That he does his work. He’s a professional. You know, just no complaints out there about Mike’s work.”

“It’s the product of an ugly divorce and custody battle,” Cyr [pictured below, at left, with Wooten] said of the complaints against the State Trooper. “It’s nothing more than that.”

Palin I thought you were a Christian?  Why are you so full of hate, revenge and lies?  Is that what your Jesus would do?  I am glad God didn’t want you to be President.

It is interesting how she can so easily fool Christian Republicans that seem to worship her like a God.  Bush fooled them, destroyed our economy, lead us to a war based on lies of WMD and ties to 9/11 and then sold torture to his Christian supporters that excused it and allowed it to continue.  Praise God?

In a letter dated January 1, 2000, written on official City of Wasilla stationery, Palin praises Wooten profusely, though she fails to declare her then-pending familial relationship with him.  She also didn’t mention this in her book.  I wonder why?  Does she wish to just deceive all the people she can?

Hey Palin, here is what you had to say about Wooten that you rather no one know about:

“It is my pleasure to provide character reference examples for Mr. Mike Wooten. Since I have become acquainted with Mike I continue to be impressed with his integrity, worthwhile community spirit and trustworthiness…  On a personal note, I have witnessed Mike’s gift of calm and kindness towards many young kids here in Wasilla. I have never seen him raise his voice, nor lose patience, nor become agitated, in the presence of any child. Instead, Mike consistently remains a fine role model for my own children and other young people in Wasilla.  I wish America had more people with the grace and sincerity that mirrors the character of Mike Wooten. We would have a much kinder calmer trustworthy nation as a result.  I believe the United States Air Force has been fortunate to have the services of Mike the past 10 years. His work ethic, his American patriotism, his obvious dedication to traditional values, and his strong faith in God and truth is witnessed in Mike’s everyday living.”

The Trick Ponies of Chincoteague are going to allow a special post about the dogs today – because even though its not “pony” related, it is clicker training related.

What the dogs look like most of the time

Everyday two very special dogs accompany me to work. Ammo (who appears a lot on this blog) is my 1 year old Dachshund and Trooper is my parent’s 2 year old Australian Shepherd/Lab mix. Both dogs have been coming to “work” at my shop since they were about 8 weeks old. Ammo is at the shop 24/7 with me and Trooper gets dropped off and picked up at different times depending on what my parent’s schedules are like. I taught both dogs at a young age what it meant to be a shop dog. This means being quiet, staying out of the way – basically just being a well behaved dog. Most of the day I get dogs that lay around sleeping and when they do play wrestle its very quiet. Being a shop dog also means greeting customers – its pretty much their main job other than to keep me company.

Trooper (being the first and only shop dog for a long time) has always been great with customers – he greeted them with an enthusiastic tail wiggle (minus the tail because he doesn’t have one) and he would NEVER bark at customers, not to mention he had free reign of the shop and wouldn’t ever dare leave even if I had to prop the front door wide open. Enter Ammo. I love him dearly – but he is a dachshund afterall – and if you know nothing about Dachshunds…all you really need to know is that they are STUBBORN. They are hard to house train, they bark a lot, and they love to hunt. I think that if you can train a Dachshund…you can train any animal.

So with the arrival of Ammo came the puppy gate. Ammo didn’t care to listen to the boundaries of the front door and being a pipsqueak at 3 lbs. he easily snuck out with customers. With the gate came some new issues. Trooper (being used to greeting people at the front door) started standing up on the gate to greet people – and it didn’t help any that my customers loved this and would pet and reward him. And as Ammo got older he started to realize what Trooper’s excitement was all about – and he developed a barking habit. As soon as someone entered the door he’d let out a few quick barks (mostly over his frustration about not being able to see over the gate as to who/what was there). But after 3-5 barks he’d settle right down.

So now I have a dog on the gate wiggling like crazy and a dog that barks (not to mention customers who are so excited to see dogs that they don’t realize they are rewarding what I deem to be bad habits…whats even worse is some of them bring the dogs cookies). Its not the greeting I want people to get when they walk in the front door – despite the fact that most of them love the dogs. I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve sort of let this issue slide for a long time. In an effort to help the customers and not look like the crazy dog trainer I sort of cover up the situation. I usually pick Ammo up so he can see who is there and will stop barking and Trooper I push off the gate after my customer’s give him a pat.

This has gone on too long now and I decided that on Wednesday it was time for Shop Dog Bootcamp. My plan was to get the dogs to sit (quietly) when customers entered. To do this I decided to use clicker training to reward them when they sat as someone entered and slowly increase the duration of time I asked them to do this. My hope was that by the end they would associate someone entering the door with sitting (and then being rewarded).

So I placed a jar of dog treats by the front counter and waited for my first customer. I decided that even if my customers thought I was crazy I’d simply explain to them what I was doing. The first few times I showed the dogs the cookie first so they knew that complying to my request would be totally worth it. I tried to be aware of when I thought someone was coming in the front door so that I could have them sitting and waiting before they even entered. This started to work, but occasionally I would be in the back and someone would come in before I noticed. But I was successful in getting them under control much quicker than I ever was before.

By Thursday I was noticing some improvement. I successfully had “no issues” for maybe 2-3 customers and even when my husband came to pick me up (people they KNOW always get a really enthusiastic hello) they both sat quietly and never made a peep. My husband was quite impressed because he knows how they can get.

We had some small setbacks throughout the day – afterall my main goal is to help my customers and sometimes if I get too many people in the store at once its hard to then also try to train the dogs at the same time, but I’m trying my best.

So hopefully soon I will be able to report that the boys are well-behaved shop greeters. But if anyone has suggestions on how to help the boys learn their new task at the shop let me know!

Cine ma cunoaste deja stie ca fara nici cea mai mica indoiala, formatia mea preferata este Trooper. As vrea sa fac un mic review al alumelor lor, ultimul fiind lansat relativ de curand.

Trooper I

Este primul alum discografic al baietilor din Targoviste si totodata se pare cel mai placut de fani. Ei bine, Trooper I este un album in care Heavy Metal-ul se simte si se canta. Un album puternic, cu piese deosebite in care instrumentele isi fac treaba asa cum ar trebui in orice formatie. Pe scurt un album, cum ar spune un prieten, ROCK, spre brootal ). TREBUIE ascultate :Strigat, Posedat, Dorinta-atat acustica cat si varianta normala, un power metal aboslut genial- si Ultima noapte a condamnatului la moarte.

Desant

Materialul discografic cu numarul doi, daca nu ma insel cel mai lung album al lor, continand 18 piese. Desi este parca ceva mai soft decat Trooper I, Desant continua in aceeasi maniera cunoscuta baietilor, in forta. Ei bine, piesele de aici , ca toate de altfel, au un sound aparte, fiind parca ceva mai variate decat pe albumul precedent, avand de asemenea si o piesa instrumentala-Un loc. De ascultat: Zorii unei zile noi, Doar a mea, Amintiri, Un singur drum, Un loc si Cantecul lebedei.

Electric

Aici deja vorbesc despre un album mult mai complex decat precedentele, preferatul meu de altfel. Pe Electric se simte faptul ca au contribuit toti membrii trupei, versurile fiind mai variate [Coiotul ne mai fiind principalul autor al versurilor] . Din nou, vorbim de un album lung -16 piese de data asta, mult mai variate ca pe Desant si mult mai bogate.  Varietatea versurilor si a soundului este bine imbinata, venind cu ceva nou in plan muzical, in special cu piesa O viata este prea mult, o piesa ce, ca sa va faceti o idee, aduce ca maniera in care este compusa cu Bohemian Rhapsody, adica poti foarte usor sa crezi ca e alta piesa, trecerile fiind simtitoare. Trebuie ascultate:Fiecare zi, Nu mai conteaza,Ratacit pe drumul vietii, Poate ca timpul, Testament [R.I.P. Adi Popa] si O viata este prea mult.

Rock’n'roll Pozitiv.

Rock’n'roll pozitiv este, pentru a lamuri unele treburi, “infectat” cu Rock’n'roll. Lucrul asta se simte pe tot parcursul albumului, gandindu-ne comparativ cu Trooper I.  Piesele aici se mai leaga, au o anumita legatura prin modul in care sunt compuse, albumul de data asta fiind mai scurt si daca il veti asculta DUPA ce ascultati Desant sau Electric o sa va para scurt. Aici e cam greu sa ma pronunt, parerile fiind impartite, insa va recomand intai sa il ascultati de 2-3 ori. De ascultat : 17:00, Moarte alba, Cat am asteptat, Rock’n'roll si Inapoi.

Vlad Tepes-Poemele Valahiei

Ultimul material discografic al trupetilor, lansat pe 16 octombrie. Album facut sa fie cursiv, sa se imbine. 12 piese despre viata lui Vlad Tepes si un bonus track care mie, personal, imi place foarte tare. E greu sa vorbesc despre albumul acesta, in special pentru ca e un album “Love it or hate it” nu prea exista cale de mijloc. Insa mie imi place, imi place mult modul in care piesele se leaga si instrumentele se aud clar, spre deosebire de Trooper I. De ascultat: Solii turci, In Valahia, Vlad Tepes, Kara Iflak si Pas infinit.

A daily occurrence at our house.  Mitzi is politely waiting for Trooper to finish so she can lick the plate. 

Look at the determination in her eyes.  She won’t respond to any of our calls or whistles at this point.  She is locked on and waiting.  I’m very impressed that she waits insteads of jumping on the cat and attacking- she doesn’t show the same restraint when it comes to something she wants from Keith or me.  But I imagine it may have something to do with the “smack down” she received from Trooper early this year.

Vlad Ţepeş – Poemele Valahiei este prima Operă rock românească, lansată oficial vinerea trecută la Bucureşti. Ideea este bună, dar iniţiativa nu se simte pe acest material fără balade şi fără piese de rezistenţă.

…-

Mă aşteptam la altceva. Nu există nici o piesă care sa poată fi izolată de restul materialului şi să spui că ACESTA ESTE HIT!

…

• Chemarea porneşte albumul cu o orchestraţie frumoasă.
• Ursitoarele seamănă ca stil cu ceva de pe Vrăjitoarele de la Cargo.
• Lupta cu săbiile este redată în tonuri de chitară şi bătăi de tobe în Solii turci, care are un intro doom metal, modern şi dur, care ar putea releva o nouă faţă pentru Trooper.

Sunt genul de piese ce le-am mai ascultat la CASH.

• Hard rock-ul clasic şi tipic celor de la Trooper din În Valahia, continuă pe Vlad Ţepeş
• După maneaua fină, sau melodie tradiţională otomană, transformată în drujbă rock, în mod poetic, pe Kara Iflak, ajung la punctul unde albumul m-a PIERDUT.

Iarăşi, după câteva piese Trooper stau şi îmi amintesc de CASH, care nu s-au putut bucura de acelaşi succes, fiind prea departe de zeama capitalei.

• Plictiseala muzicală reiese prin piese forţate care merg pentru genul muzical heavy metal anii 80, dar sunt deja la a nu ştiu câta piesă cântată în acest stil… Moare Vlad este mai melodioasă, deşi nu mă mai surprind cârnaţii pe chitară.
• În Lumea lui Dracul, aş fi folosit contrabas mai mult, şi din păcate nici măcar viorile nu se aud bine.
• Puţin mai deosebită pare a fi Sfârşitul fără sfârşit, unde se combină canto cleric cu rockul, dar finalul cataclismic face praf toată frumuseţea Operei rock.
• Pas-ul Infinit pentru Trooper pare a fi oda dedicată lui Cristi Minculescu (chiar la final). Solistul trece chiar prin trei tonalităţi de voce (de la tenor la alt) în acest cântec. Nu trebuia lăsat aşa. Sună ca o variantă nefinisată. Îmi aduce aminte de fostul vocal de la fosta trupă CASH. Ultima jumătate de minut de pe ultima piesă strică întreg efectul albumului şi nu îmi mai vine să reascult materialul, oricât de bine intenţionată a fost trupa.

Influenţa instrumentelor clasice, care se aud mai mult sau mai puţin pe întreg materialul, au influenţat prea puţin Opera aceasta muzicală la modul general. Ce s-a realizat aici nu este o Operă rock, în sensul că afară acest gen de album ar fi perfect normal pentru mai multe genuri rock produse în studiouri profesionale cu muzicieni invitaţi să îmbogăţească sound-ul rock al trupei. Trooper nu excelează în originalitate şi idei muzicale. Am crezut că prin Operă rock, o să existe mai multe momente muzicale folosind instrumentele clasice, neobişnuite spectacolului rock din club. Am fost dezamăgit să constat că de fapt s-a augmentat vocea heavy metal, cârnaţii la chitară şi diversele ritmuri la tobe.

Tot respectul pentru trupa din Târgovişte care transcrie istoria pe ritmuri clasice hardrock. Aşteptăm o trupă de la Iaşi să ne amintească despre pământurile de peste Prut de care se pare ca toţi am uitat.

Este o lucrare bine gândită, dar dacă unul din scopurile acestui material ar fi ca Trooper să câştige public suplimentar, eu nu cred că va avea succesul scontat. În principiu, albumul este ţintit publicului ce l-a avut şi până acum, şi probabil vor fi atraşi câţiva curioşi în plus.

Facem precizarea că voturile primite pe e-mail sau prin scrisori sunt luate în considerare numai dacă trimiteţi clasamentul integral. Piesa care obţine cele mai multe voturi online nu se va situa pe primul loc în luna respectivă la Top Românesc dacă o alta primeşte atât voturi online cât şi prin scrisori sau e-mailuri. Aşa cum v-am mai zis, procentajul voturilor este urmtorul: 30 % vot online, 35% prin email şi 35% prin scrisori. Aşteptăm să votaţi piesele preferate din luna octombrie pentru a alege împreună PIESA LUNII! La Top Românesc clasamentele le fac numai prietenii!
