A tropical low-pressure system over the southern part of the East Sea continues to affect weather in the southern region while a new storm, Nida, is forming over the Pacific Ocean, the national weather bureau said.

The storm was at 15.4 degrees latitude and 139.9 degrees longitude on the afternoon of November 26 and is forecast to move northwest at a speed of 10 kilometers an hour. The storm has winds at level 13-14, or 134-166 kilometers an hour.

The tropical depression on November 27 was at 6.6 to 7.6 degrees latitude and 110.7 to 111.7 degrees longitude. The strongest winds near the depression’s eye reached level 6, or 39-49 kilometers an hour.

In the next 24 hours, the depression is forecast to move southwest at a speed of 5-10 kilometers an hour.

Le Thi Xuan Lan, deputy director of the Southern Regional Hydro Meteorological Center’s Forecasting Department said that the depression and northwesterly winds would cause heavy rains and flooding to some areas in Ho Chi Minh City and the southern region.

The southwestern region of the East Sea including Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands and the waters off the region between Binh Thuan to Ca Mau provinces will see level 6 winds with gusts up to level 7-8.

Well, it’s Friday morning for me; Thanksgiving night if you’re reading back in my homeland. I’ve had a splendid morning – woke up early, talked to my family via the magic of Skype, and watched the Cowboys win. I hope your Thanksgivings were the stuff of legend, punctuated with an endless trail of gravy. But enough rambling. Here are some things I wanna tell you. Let’s do it quick-hit style.

If you’ll please cast your eyes over to the right side of this here blog (beyond Norm’s picture), you dear readers will notice that you now have a little list of categories from which to pick and choose stories. When I first started this little thing, I had no idea what I was going to be doing or writing about or any of that nonsense. Clearly, I still don’t, really. But last weekend I went through all of my past stories and rants and such, and filed each into a category. So there you have it. Wanna only read my self-important stories involving the deathcycle? Now you can! Or perhaps you only stop by for the Engrish – have at it. It’s a small thing, really. But I hope you like it. If I had a nickel for every time I’d said that…

Baby, it’s cold(ish) outside!
Initially, I was going to tell you that despite living in this tropical climate, it finally was kinda feeling like fall (or something resembling fall) here in Kaohsiung. But as I write this, it’s 11:15 am, and it’s currently 84 degrees outside. As my kids say when they’re disgusted, Aye-yuh! This is not fall. This is madness! Well, ok… it is cooler now than it ever was in July or August or September. We haven’t seen a high above 90 in maybe a month. So that’s all well and good. But last week, it was cold. Or again, cold-ish. The highs were still in the upper 70s or low 80s, but the nights were downright cool. Maybe even all the way down in the 60s! Ok ok, that’s not really cold at all, and as a lover of autumn and the like, it’s not much. But, let me tell you this: riding around on a scooter when it’s 50 or 60 can get pretty damn cold. Perhaps I should invest in a full-head helmet; or perhaps some riding gloves; earmuffs? Or maybe I’ll just figure out a way to bottle molten hot lava, stash it in my little under-seat compartment, and give myself a nice little ghetto seat-warmer.

A very Thai Christmas (and New Year (and (30th) birthday))
So as we all know by now, I will not be going back to the States for Christmas. It saddens me, but it’s true. However, as I mentioned in my last post, how often am I gonna be living in Southeast Asia? I need to be taking advantage of all the beauty around me that’s so close, and so cheaply available. And so I’m going to be in Thailand for Christmas and New Years. I’m meeting some friends in Bangkok on the 26th, but I’ll actually be in Thailand on my own for the 22nd-25th. So yeah, I’ll be alone for Christmas day, but I’m actually somewhat excited for that. I can do whatever I choose and go wherever I want. In all likelihood, it’ll involve Thai food, some sort of cocktail, and the beach. This is good.
And then, on the 28th, said friends and I will travel down to Koh Samui for some sort of epic New Year’s party that they have there every year. New Years Eve will also be my 30th birthday. I have no idea what to think about this. But the whole experience should be great, and I’m pretty damn excited. I’ll keep you posted. Also, if you have any ideas/suggestions of places for me to go while in Thailand, please do share them with me. Your support and generosity power my soul.

Taipei for the weekend
Speaking of going places, I’ll be in Taipei for the weekend with some teacher friends from school. I haven’t been there since my first five days in Taiwan. Now that I have a slightly better grasp on this country, I’m pretty excited for the getaway. I’m gonna try to hit up the National Palace Museum on Saturday, and some hot springs on Sunday. You will find out soon enough if I am successful in fulfilling these endeavors. It actually is going to be cold in Taipei. Like, real actual cold. Do they have lava for sale there?

Tropical is a word being floated about alot at the moment, tropical dubstep, tropical garage, tropical rhythms, tropical synth lines. And usually the moment some ‘jock (though a more influencial one) like me writes about it, sets some boundaries sounds either become sterile or producers move on. But I think some people are getting this tropical thing wrong, I think it’s a lot more fluid and open than what some people are using it for and using to signify a slightly more interesting form of an existing genre it certainly ain’t.

For me at least, tropical seems to sum up some of the most exciting movements across a very wide spectrum of forward thinking dance music of recent. Tropical is the influence of global soundsystems becoming much more predominant in sounds and samples drawn for by producers and DJs coupled with the explosion of colour that this year has already seen. From straight up baltimore-influenced house from Zombie Disco Squad and Sound Pellingrino, Joker and Samiyam’s synth wizardery or the soca and funky influenced rhythms appearing in Untold and tracks like Pearson Sound’s Wad. When I asked Débruit about where he gets his sounds here, the reply was worldwide. His latest EP, Spatio Temporel, takes influences and sounds from all across the globe, from Nigeria to Persia. I guess it’s a sign of the times where although music can be localised, samples and a producers’ palette of sounds doesn’t particularly have to be.

So much has been written this year about colour in music, from Joker’s purple bass to Kode’s vision of Hyperdub 5 and I don’t think much more needs to be said. But it’s winter yet we’ve had albums from Hudson Mohawke and the Terror Danjah retrospective that just drip and ooze colour (I mean just check the HudMo album cover). In the clubs recent cuts from Joy Orbison, James Blakes remix of Untold, Gemmy’s Johnny 5, Ikonika’s Sahara Michael all rule DJs boxes. Club music is in a happy place right now, not a temporal high but a subdued happy that lasts beyond the night bus trip home.

I’m not about to say either that the global influence on UK music is anything new. The whole history of UK bass music owes a lot to sound systems from across the world, be it jungle, dubstep or bristol’s trip hop. Dan Hancox pointed out last week the influence of the oriental on grime for a brief period. But I think the difference this time round is the colour, it’s allowed for music simultaneously up and deep, without being jump-up and without being aggressive. It’s accessable, “feminine pressure” if you would as sounds transport listener to a Jamaican beach or LA sunset, whilst being firmly routed in a room under some sprawling metropolis.

Night Slugs is a night that’s been repping what I’d call tropical pretty much since they started. In fact they’ve had both taglines global bass and tropical at various points on their flyers. Their starting a label aswell, Mosca is the first release (in a month or so) with a hefty remix package featuring Roska, Julio Bashmore, Greena and the Night Slugs boys themselves, L-Vis and Bok Bok. A side Square One is the perfect example of what it means to be tropical; the palette of sounds taken from african drums then reproduce in a way evident of a baltimore club riddim, the vocal sample that could well have been taken from a Jamaican soundclash, deep, deep tribal stabs and then of course it fits with the sounds of the very now garage-grime-funky crossover (this in turn instantly ties it into the whole lineage of UK bass music and all the global soundsystems influences over the years.) Mosca is playing alongside at self-promclaimed tropical night Un Bongo tomorrow, details here. Unknown Soulja did this mix as promo and sees Joy Orbison, Jam City, Ikonika and Wiley alongside Vybz Kartel, James Fox, Mavado and Busy Signal. Totally tropical indeed.

It is this thing called tropical that allows tracks that have such a disparate bank of sounds like Débruit’s Ectah and Shortstuff’s A Rustling to sit together. Maybe it’s something similar to what makes Hyperdub 5 such a complete and united collection of very different artists. This definately isn’t a genre for that would be a crime worse than wonky or future garage, I think some of the sounds are too disparate for that to happen anyway, just a collection and palette of sounds making music very exciting at the moment.

First off, what could be better than I nice, hot shower?  Whether waking up in the warming or relaxing before going to bed, it has to be up there with my highlights of the day. 

My favourite part is pouring soap on to my loofah and getting it all soapy.  The combination of the hot water and the scent of the bath soap just tops it all.

Now, when it comes to choosing a favourite scent I cannot. My bathroom shelf is filled with so many different scents from fruit to floral to spices. I am very much used to getting some sort of bath product every birthday or Christmas and I never get tired of it. It gives me the chance to try so many scents without having to pay for all of the ones that I would love to buy!

I do have a pattern to what scents come out at what time. During the summer time I tend to lather up with invigorating scents like pomegranate, mango, and tropical combinations. Currently I am winding down with cucumber and peach scents. Eventually when the winter season is here I will suds up with the scents of the season, vanilla and green tea.

I am sure there are people out there who love there scented soaps just as much, if not more, than myself. With my love for scents, I also tend to notice what scents other people are using, or lack of. So on that thought, do not forget to go lather up with a different scent than you have tried before and smile.  : )

As photographers, tourists are sometimes bound to tourist attractions.  It’s just the nature of traveling.  We all do it.  We want to capture images that are easily identified with the destination.  In Cambodia, people usually capture Angkor Wat, the killing fields and perhaps the Tonle Sap, (the largest natural lake in Southeast Asia and one of the world’s wonders for its reverse flow depending on the season).

In my trips to Cambodia, I find the tourist attractions taking a backseat to shooting the people in their natural environment.  On this particular trip I spent several hours in rice patties and farms capturing people going about their everyday tasks.  From tending the crops to planting rice, the photography came alive for me.  It was also a chance to interact with people, people that you will find are very friendly, accommodating, and dignified.  This kind of interaction may transform your trip from a routine to a magical journey.

Nici nu-mi vine să cred, am câștigat premiul cel mare la SuperBlog 2009! A meritat efortul. Dar numai eu știu cum ziua eram preocupată cu facultatea și proiectele aferente, iar noaptea stăteam până târziu să scriu articolele pentru probele obligatorii și opționale. Ehhh… știți cum se spune „Suferă baba la fumusețe” sau mai degrabă „Suferă studenta la SuperBlog”. Sunt încântată de premiu, dar mă simt extenuată. Plus că nu mi-am mai văzut prietenii din 15 octombrie. Mă sunau săracii să mă invite prin diverse locuri, dar eu nu și nu, am de scris. Cred că ar fi timpul să mă revanșez. Dar cum?

Hmmm… cred că ar fi foarte încântați dacă am pleca undeva împreună. Și dacă tot suntem la jumătatea lui decembrie… ce-ar fi să le propun să petrecem Revelionul undeva la o cabană. Pun mâna pe telefon și-l sun pe Mirrrcea.

- Ce mai faci măi Mirrrcea? Ți-a fost dor de mine?

- Ooo… mai ai telefon? Nu mai știam nimic de tine. N-ai venit cu noi la ultima întâlnire.

- Știu. Dar a meritat renunțarea. Am câștigat concursul!

- Wow, felicitări!

- Mulțumesc. Te sunasem să te întreb dacă ai planuri pentru Revelion. Ce zici? Facem o mică petrecere?

- Am o idee mai bună. În timp ce tu postai pe blog, am participat și eu la un concurs. Și…. am câștigat și eu.

- Aaa… bună idee! Că și-așa nu ne-am văzut la concert Iris. O sun acum.

Offf Doamne, cum o fi suportat geanta mea atâtea haine? Parcă văd că la întoarcere n-or să mai încapă. Dar nu contează, le arunc în ocean, să aibă și el o amintire de la mine. A trecut deja o zi de când suntem pe vapor și mă simt ca în paradis. Aproape că uitasem cum este cu bunii mei prieteni.

- Divo, ești gata? Ne așteaptă băieții pe punte de 15 minute.

- Gata Larisa, îmi prin părul  și cobor.

Ohh, Doamne, ce mă doare capul! Cred că am băut prea mult noaptea trecută. Dacă petrecerea asta a fost așa reușită, mă întreb cum o să fie diseară, la cumpăna dintre ani. Auu! Înțeleg că mă doare capul de la gin, dar spatele nu cred că are legătură cu asta. O să fac reclamație pentru patul ăsta dur. Ar cam fi timpul să cobor și să-i cau pe ceilalți. Ce… ce e asta? Nisip? Unde moartea m-au băgat?

- Te-ai trezit?

- Ăăă… după cum se vede. Sebi,ce s-a întâmplat? Am ajuns la destinație?

- Da. Pe o insulă pustie, fără urmă de civilizație, cu mai mult de 35 de grade în aer.

- Adică…

- Adică am naufragiat.

- Unde sunt ceilalți? S-au…. înecat?

- Cine știe? Și eu m-am trezit la câțiva metri de tine, tot aici.

- Doamne! Larisa, Mircea, Valy! Nu se poate?

- Aaa.. ei s-au dus după mâncare.

- Păi nu ziceai că nu știi?

- Credeam că întrebi de ceilalți pasageri. Noi am fost toți într-un loc pe vapor și probabil de-aia…

Am văzut multe filme de genul, dar nu credeam că voi ajunge într-o zi să trăiesc așa ceva. Din paradisul civilizației am ajuns în paradisul sălbăticiei. Eu, care nu am văzut decât palmierii smotociți din Mamaia, am ajuns acum să văd namilele astea tropicale sau ecuatoriale, Dumnezeu știe. Oceanul se vede mirific, plaja e de vis… când or să se întoarcă ceilalți, o să mă duc să văd și eu împrejurimile. Mă stresează rău soarele puternic, am nevoie de umbră și răcoare.

- Cine se pricepe să spargă nuci de cocos?

- Ați venit.

- Am găsit mai multe chestii decât ne așteptam. Cocos, papaya, mango, banane, rodii și încă niște fructe care nu știu cum se numesc.

- Să-l fi văzut pe Valy cum se cocoța în bananier! A fost genial, nu-i așa Mircea?

- Hai măi Larisa, nu-l mai necăji, zi merci că s-a urcat.

- Eu nu mai pot să stau în soarele ăsta. Mergem la umbră?

- Am găsit noi un loc perfect la vreo 300m de-aici, e răcoare și e aproape de un izvor.

- Și ce mai așteptăm?

N-am văzut în viața mea atâta verde. La TV credeam că sunt efecte speciale. Dacă nu aș ști că sunt… undeva departe și dacă nu mi-ar lipsi confortul de pe vapor, chiar m-aș putea obișnui pe-aici.

- Ăsta-i singurul loc în care ierburile sunt mai mici și putem sta jos. Mai încolo aproape că nu te vezi din ele.

- E bine aici Valy. Hai să mâncăm.

- După ce apune soarele, mergem pe plajă, e periculos să stăm aici.

- Da Sebi, și trebuie să ne gândim cum putem să plecăm.

- Dar de ce să plecăm? Mie chiar îmi place. Mereu mi-am dorit o experiență ca asta.

- O experiență, da, dar nu o viață în pustietate, Valy!!!

- Apropo de experiență… ce fructe ziceați că sunt astea?

- V-am zis că nu știm, le-am luat și noi pentru că arătau bine și nu trebuia să ne cățărăm.

- Sunt foarte bune. Când o să ajung acasă o să caut să văd ce sunt.

- Prin burta cărui pește o fi aparatul meu foto? Ce păcat că nu pot să fac măcar o poză.

- Stai liniștită divo că n-o să uităm croaziera asta chiar și fără poze.

Doamne… iar mă doare capul. De data asta sigur nu e de  la băutură și nici de la căldură pentru că am stat toată ziua la umbră. Sper doar că n-am ratat Revelionul!

- Larisa, ce se întâmplă? Unde suntem?

- Ți-a fost rău, ți-ai pierdut cunoștința… Între timp au venit câțiva oameni în căutarea noastră și ne-au adus aici.

- Doamne, de ce sunt așa umflată? Ce mi-au făcut?

- Nimeni nu ți-a făcut nimic. Ai făcut alergie la litchii.

- Litchii? Ce-s alea?

- Fructele pe care le-ai mâncat.

- Păi se putea să nu stric eu tot? Spune-mi că n-am ratat Revelionul.

- Vrei să te mint frumos sau să-ți spun adevărul?

- N-am chef de glume.

- Este 2 ianuarie… Te-ai mai trezit de câteva ori, nu-ți amintești?

- Nu. Offf..  îmi vine să plâng. Dar totuși… unde suntem?

- Sao Paulo. Ne-au luat pe un alt vas care venea aici.

- Fetelor, sunteți gata? Să mergem!

- Unde să mergem Mircea? Nu-mi spune că ne-au asigurat hotel.

- Nu.

- Dar?

- Mergem la un prieten.

- Prieten?

- Kriss. Ai uitat că era aici? Cât ai fost tu inconștientă, l-am căutat și mergem la el.

- Wow! Ești maxim! Abia aștept să-l văd.

-Da, facem Revelion cu repetiție.

Până la urmă, nu regret nici că am naufragiat, nici că am plecat de-acolo, nici că am ratat Revelionul. Regret că o să trebuiască să plecăm de aici, zilele următoare.

For todays post i’m going to tell you about my favourite vacation i have been on yet!  In February 2008 my brother got married on a resort in the Dominican Republic.  We were in Punta Cana and it was a 5 star resort!  I have never been to a more beautiful resort it was called the Majestic Colonial.  I did not have one complaint at all (besides the fact my brothers luggage was lost but thats the airports fault).

There were a total of 40 guests that made it out for the wedding.  Everywhere you went in the resort you knew someone.  We even over took the Disco every night.  It was so much fun.  Some of the many thing we did were Kayaking, Dune Buggy’s,  Flea Market, Snorkelling,  and LOTS of food and drinks!

The wedding was beautiful, it was a a gazebo on the resort.  It was more private then the beach option. It was a short and sweet wedding (i cried haha) We then took pictures around the resort and on the beach.  Although the beach pictures were nice, a lot of other guest (in speedos) felt the need to stand behind the pictures and stare well in the way.  The dinner was delicious and the workers were amazing.

It was an all inclusive resort so unlimited food and drinks.  They had many restaurants there that you could book.  They had a good variety of food and of course the drinks were awesome.   Congrats to the happy couple!

When your about to take a picture of your friends, instead of saying “cheese” switch it with the word “whales”, you’ll make them laugh, I guarantee it.

Pilot Whales socializing off the shores of Cape Breton Island

Pilot whales are very social, and are often found in groups of 20 to 90 pods. They swim, breed and eat as a group. Some pilot whales show off and spy hop. They basically stick half of their bodies out of the water, vertically, almost like break dancing. Can you spy hop? Many animals spy hop, not just this big guy. Wolves all need to do this, so they can see their surroundings.

Pilot whales look like black dolphins with a white or light grey anchor-shaped patch on its bottom surface. They have rounded heads with a very small beak. The male’s head may protrude up to 4 inches over the lower jaw! Its body is long, allowing the whale to swim with ease, but very stocky and muscular. They look cute, but they can hold their ground.

Pilot Whale Spy Hopping

Pilot whales are generally found in both the northern and southern hemisphere or in tropical water throughout the world. Short-finned pilot whales tend to chill out in the warmer water.

Et son pilote

For the first time a MINT, also known as Marché International de Noël Tropical, will take place in Paris. The event has the purpose to reproduce the atmosphere of Christmas for all the people who live in a tropical country and they normally celebrated 25th December on a beach instead of on a covered in snow slope.

On 18th, 19th and 20th December, the Agency Mara Internationale and GEDFOM (Groupment d’Enterprises Des Français d’Outre-Mer) organise the Christmas Market (MINT), which is also one of the point of the programme for Creole Year 2009.
The aim is to recreate a huge market that gathers all the Christmas experiences for countries like the Caribbean, Africa and other tropical destinations. Here it will be possible to find a colourful mixture of crafts, clothing, jewellery, spices and obviously many delicious gastronomic proposals.

There will be 150 exhibitors from 45 countries of Africa and the ex French colonies. The exhibition hall will cover over 5,000 square metres of surface and i twill be held at the Grande Halle de la Villette, in the north-east of central Paris. About 20,000 visitors are expected to visit the market during the 3 days. What are you waiting for? Book your holiday rental in Paris city and head for the MINT!
