Women are hardest hit by Alzheimer’s. In fact, women account for more than 45,000 deaths each year from Alzheimer’s complications. Add into the equation the impact on the family since women traditionally are the caregivers for children, parents and spouses. Alzheimer’s ravages entire families.

Alzheimer’s is a bit mysterious with no clear understanding of what causes the disease. However, it is known that Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, which is the term used to described memory loss and other cognitive disfunctions that affect daily living. Research on the brain has shown that nerve damage occurs long before significant memory loss appears. Approximately 5.2 million Americans have Alzheimer’s with three times as many cases expected in 40 years. Globally, there are approximately 26.6 million people living with Alzheimer’s and the number of people affected is expected to quadruple by 2050 worldwide.

Without understanding the absolute cause, confusion sets in on what to do. Outside of the realities of aging and genetics, common sense good health practices are critical to living a full long life and potentially offer a bit prevention from Alzheimer’s.

Advice on good health practices is simple and you have heard it all before – exercise, eat right and have fulfilling social relationships, while effectively managing stress. There you go, that is the secret to a long health life. Easier said than done.

The bigger question, how do you put this into practice?

Exercise. Regardless of age, your body needs at least 30 minutes a day of exercise and your brain needs a break from all of your daily worries. Walk, run, play tennis, do tai-chi or practice yoga, the ultimate beneficial movement for the body and mind. Try to spend at least ten minutes outside under the sun for your body to create vitamin D.

Eat right. Your body is an amazing machine, which needs the right nutrients to work efficiently and well. Omega-3 from cold water fish is essential and often forgotten. Food rich in antioxidants are recommended such as dark-skinned vegetables and fruits. Try broccoli; spinach; kale; red and green peppers; all berries – black, blue, raspberries, strawberries; red grapes and cherries. Always include some garlic, onions and ginger in your diet. A daily vitamin with E, C , B-12 and folate is a good supplement. And, drink green tea often – it is rich in antioxidants. In addition, minimize your intake of alcohol, high fats, refined processed foods and please do not smoke.

Keep engaged with life around you. Meet friends for lively conversations, games, book clubs or even chess. Love to learn – anything! Try cooking, languages, music, literature, sculpture, art, yoga, weaving, dog training … the world is your oyster. Learn as much as you can because there is no age limit for learning. Read books, magazines, text books, old texts. Do crossword puzzles and Sudoku or play backgammon, poker, chess, bridge, Old Maid and other brain twisters. Diversity is the secret to success.

Manage stress. A wise friend once said, “You can choose happiness or misery.” Knowing what to worry about and what not to worry about takes practice, maturity and wisdom. Try to give your brain a break from all of the chaos around in life by practicing yoga, listening to beautiful music, meditating, laughing and abstaining from all news – television, radio, papers and web sites. Make a determined choice about what you want to think about and make that thought a valuable contribution to your day. As Dr. Anna Tucker always says, “Live with no regrets.” Forgive yourself and others always and say “I love you.” always.

Talk with your mother, sister, daughter or girlfriends about making lifestyle changes to be healthier and be more engaged with life. Offer a little encouragement. A little bit of supportive loving care goes a long way.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation is available for information and support at all times via their toll free help line at 1-800-272-3900. In fact, they are also hosting innovative gatherings for women just to start the discussion. Recently, Trousseau, a lingerie boutique in Vienna, Virginia, hosted a reception for women who wanted to learn more about Alzheimer’s. Supporting the outreach were corporate representatives from Chantelle, Moonstruck, and Eveden Group. Innovative outreach strategies are essential in reaching out to women who believe that they are too young or Alzheimer’s would never happen to them or some one they know. Well, the truth is being proactive about being healthy and understanding the dynamics of the brain, only empowers everyone to take charge of their health and the quality of their lives.

Alzheimer’s prevention tips are basic good reminders to keep your brain healthy by exercising, eating right, engaging in life and managing stress. Remember, tell your grandmothers, aunts, mother, sisters, daughters, girlfriends – if it is good for your brain it is good for you.

From the “run don’t walk department”…

Last night, after leading an Italian wine tasting in Houston, I finally got the chance to sit down with cousins Marty and Joanne for a proper dinner at Catalan, where — and I’ll just cut to the chase since I need to get my butt on a plane in a few hours — wine director Antonio Gianola’s list just blew me away. Joly by the glass? Erbaluce, Vin Jaune from the Jura, Edi Simčič Pinot Grigio, López de Heredia, Nikolaihof, 1989 Domaine des Baumard????!!! There were just so many great wines that I wanted to taste… and that was just in the chapters devoted to white wine! Antonio’s list is precise and informed, informative and fun, easy to navigate for the neophyte and thrilling to leaf through for the connoisseur. There is a threshold where a wine list becomes a thrill of its own and a form of profound dilectio for wine lovers (remember this piece by Eric?). Antonio’s list passes through that threshold with ethereal and seamless celerity. And the best part? His prices are among the most if not the most aggressive I’ve seen anywhere in the U.S. Click through to the restaurant’s website to read his list (which Antonio seems to update like clockwork). And check out this profile of importer Neal Rosenthal by Houston Chronicle wine writer Dale Roberston where Antonio is featured (and where I lifted the photo).

De vinographia: Perhaps the greatest wine writers of all are the authors of great wine lists.

Antonio loves the desert, Antonio prays for rain…

Tracie B and I are on our way to New Jersey for the wedding of one of my best and dearest friends in the world (and the drummer in Nous Non Plus). Stay tuned… I heard something about some Vajra being poured tomorrow night and some Beatles songs… mmmmmm…

“Antonio’s Song”

—Michael Franks

Antonio lives life’s frevo
Antonio prays for truth
Antonio says our friendship
Is a hundred-proof
The vulture that circles Rio
Hangs in this L.A. sky
The blankets they give the Indians
Only make them die
But sing the Song
Forgotten for so long
And let the Music flow
Like Light into the Rainbow
We know the Dance, we have
We still have the chance
To break these chains and flow
Like Light into the Rainbow
Antonio loves the desert
Antonio prays for rain
Antonio knows that Pleasure
Is the child of Pain
And lost in La Califusa
When most of my hope was gone
Antonio’s samba led me
To the Amazon
We sing the Song
Forgotten for so long
And let the music flow
Like Light into the Rainbow
We know the Dance, we have
We still have the chance
To break these chains and flow
Like Light into the Rainbow.

We received a small shipment of some truly exquisite bras and panties from Nina Ricci. With elegant details like dual silk straps and satin ribbon trim, the ivory and blush embroidered lace sets would make the perfect trousseau set for some lucky bride-to-be. My personal favorite, however, is the intense Fuchsia Crocus Balconette Bra pictured above- such a great cut in the perfect color for the season! Might have to snap that one up for myself. (The price point is high, of course, so if you’re on a budget, I’d say go for the Namos set by Jenna Leigh in a similar shade of purple.)

by Rachel Get your WINE GEEK on: Grape of mystery… Ploussard is on my mind. One of the lushes

by Rachel

Get your WINE GEEK on: Grape of mystery… Ploussard is on my mind. One of the lushes has requested a number of specific bottles, from a specific producer…a bottle she drank at a restaurant in New York City. So, I consider it a personal mission to track this wine down.

2007 Philippe Bornard ‘Point Barre’, Arbois Pupillin, Jura, France

So, I do know that Jura, France is a fairly small wine region 80 kilometers east of Burgundy, tucked into the Alps, just outside of Switzerland. Other than that, I have sipped on Chardonnay from Arbois, the town on the north side of the Jura wine region, and we currently offer a bottling by Rijckaert. Super tasty. But, I digress. This intriguing and complex little place apparently only grows Chardonnay and Savagnin as the official white grapes and Ploussard/Poulsard, Trousseau, and Pinot Noir as the official red grapes. And, vin Jaune, a wine very similar to Sherry, is another bizarro traditional libation. Wha? Labeling is a bit wonky, too, but I will not accost you with nitty gritty details, but do inquire if you would like more details.

Every so often, us Lushes will stumble upon a grape that we have never previously tasted, and very rarely something we have not heard of, but it’s not everyday that the complete trifecta of obscure, and tiny, wine region jumps us on knowing the grapes and style of wines, too. Back to my focus, the elusive Ploussard…red wines, vinified as such, are often pale enough and labeled as if they were pink. Yep, confusing. The soils range from limestone to clay and marl, the gently rolling Jura hills begin reaching taller into the Alps. The cool climate produces bouncy, lightly tinted, but fairly high acid, tannic reds. The reds are aged in large, old oak foudres and often bottled and released prior to the whites. Ploussard, although I have never tasted and therefore can’t really personally attest to this, but trust the tasting notes of those familiar with the region and the grape, tends to taste of raspberry or red currant, and smoke, and may show oxidized characteristics. And, apparently, the wine pairs smashingly well with charcuterie and smoked sausage. Basically, I have now discovered that at least one bottling of Ploussard from Arbois lurks in Chicago, but not the label I am searching for and I still have yet to taste this curious beast. So, bring it on! I want.

Cheers, rd

The Trousseau Chest, originally uploaded by Josh and Julie.

As Mehmet and his wife return with Ayşegül to their home where Eren waits, they must wait for the bride’s trousseau to precede her into the house. This chest, filled with the greatest samples of crocheting and lacework produced by the bride throughout her life, will be waiting in the bridal suite and accompany the couple the rest of their life.

Naturally, I wasn’t present at the girls’ henna night the previous evening (the tamer Turkish equivalent of a bachelorette party, it happened while the men were dancing), so I will turn to other sources here for more information on the henna night and the trousseau. Traditions vary even within central Anatolia (a friend from near Ankara told me their traditional weddings don’t feature a trousseau chest), but I think this account from the “Your Guide to Turkey” site is pretty close to my experience in Eshenler:

On the day the henna night is to be held, or a few days earlier, the trousseau is taken from the girl’s home and brought to the man’s, and the bridal chamber is prepared. The trousseau is sometimes exhibited to the guests for a few days in the girl’s home before the wedding, and in the man’s home during and after it. It is a widespread tradition that someone sits on the trousseau chest, asking for a tip as it is taken from the girl’s home. In addition, in the early hours of the day the henna night is to be held, a group of women from the bridegroom’s family take the henna that will be placed on the bride’s hands and feet, her clothes and the food that will be offered to the guests to the girl’s home, again to the accompaniment of great festivities. The women who gather in the girl’s home on the henna night have fun for a while, but later try to make her cry by singing sad songs. Henna that has earlier kneaded with water is brought in on a tray surrounded by candles and placed in the middle of the room. In some places, the henna is first put on the hands of the bride and then distributed to the guests; in other areas the henna is first distributed to the guests, and only after everybody has left is it placed on the bride’s hands. If the woman so wishes, henna can also be placed on her feet and hair. Considerable attention is paid to charging a woman with a happy marriage, called the “basi bütün” (meaning “whose head is complete”, In a sense, this describes her as someone who has a complete family with husband and children and whose marriage is whole, not separated by divorce) to knead and distribute the henna and apply it to the girl’s hand. The woman places the henna on one of the bride’s hands, and a young girl places it on the other. Before the henna is applied, coins or gold are also placed in her hands.

Traditional Wedding (June 13, 2009)

It is ancient Kuwait City, around 1945. Kuwait was a fishing coast; contraband activities were the life line; and divers extracted pearls. Desert storms chased in inhabitant in their mud houses; a long sort of minaret at the center of houses with holes absorbed the hot sandy air and sent fresh cool air to the underground chambers. It barely rain in this region of the Arabic/Persian Gulf, at most 15 mm of rain. The residences are built around a square large cistern; rain is directed toward a large cloth extended over the cistern that filters rain water off the sand.

It is said that when the tiny Sabbah tribe settled in this region two larger tribes were in constant in fighting. The two big tribes settled their differences by agreeing that the leader of the Sabbah tribe plays the impartial judge.

This is the marriage transaction for young Ibrahim who never saw his bride; his bride Mariam is not a cousin and thus Ibrahim did not see her as a child before girls wear the veil before the age of 14.

A specialized marrying lady (for commission) recommended Mariam to Ibrahim’s mother. Mariam made sure to escape so that the visiting woman does not see her and scrutinize her from head to toe and thus would have no indications on the suitability of Mariam to her son. The obstinate mother finally saw Mariam and gave her acknowledgment for the transaction to proceed. Ibrahim’s father got to work; he gathered intelligence on the bride’s family social and financial status. The financial deal between the two fathers set the marriage in motion.

The two families gathered to arrange the date of the wedding and the delivery of the “adaza” or trousseau. Weding dates are in general on Thursday evenings. The women of Ibrahim’s family and their neighbors march to the bride’s house singing and banging on tambourines; the marching women were bringing the cloths, winter and summer attires, blankets, two “abayas”, and carried by a woman over her head; among the offering is a purse with liquid money. Fruits, cakes, all kinds of coffee and sugary tasty bits were served. Then the women examine every piece of garment, except the purse that went straight to the bosom of the mother-in-law. Ibrahim’s mother was not to attend this part of the ceremony by tradition.

One week after the presentation of the “adaza” the two fathers met to decide on the wedding date. A few days before the wedding the two father gathered in the mosque to register the marriage in front of the religious “sheikh”; this is the official contract. In Islam, the bride is to participate in writing the terms of the contract but since they are married young and are practically illiterate, then tradition usurped the brides’ rights.

The evening of the wedding the parent’s of the bride and their neighborhood arrived to the groom’s house and they were assembled in the “diwania”, the spacious formal meeting place of men in a house. Ibrahim’s father was to attend the fifth and last prayer in the mosque. The women walked to the bride’s house to bring Mariam chanting “youyou”. Strong women carried the mattress and the pillows destined for the couple.

The men arrived sprayed with rose water by the masses and perfumed with the smoke of sandalwood. Ibrahim and his father walked in front. The Ibrahim was left alone among the women waiting for the bride. Five young girls carried the chair mounted by Mariam who was completely covered; women were sending their benedictions. This part of the ceremony also Ibrahim’s mother was not supposed to attend.

The new couple was left alone. Ibrahim removed the cover off Mariam. Mariam was scared and terribly shy. Before the wedding, an old woman instructed Mariam on the secrets of intercourse and she was to remain close to Mariam for another week after the wedding. During the first night women kept up the chanting and crying, supposedly to cover up the screaming of the bride.

In the morning, Ibrahim is to leave the tenth of the agreed upon sum under the bride pillow; the mother-in-law knew where to retrieve this sum. Early in the morning, Ibrahim is to return to his father’s home and leave his wife sleeping, only to return by night fall; this procedure is to last three days.

On the third evening, Ibrahim’s mother and her women friends were to visit with the bride. The bride was sitting on a throne, in a corner, so that all women could contemplate her at leisure. Mariam was covered with jewelry and looking-like an idol.

A week later, the parents of the mother-in-law were to escort Mariam to her new residence; the mother-in-law was denied to share in this part of the ceremony; she was to be invited three days later with the utmost fast. For an entire week Mariam was to sit still covered with heavy jewelries; some jewelry were borrowed for this week to weight on Mariam’s head. Mariam fainted on the last day.

In general, the bride undergoes thorough epilating process. Both genders are washed and their hair, palm and feet dyed with “henne”. Henne was used by mariners and fishermen to toughen the skin of their hands and feet. Black “khol” was smeared around the eyes to detract mosquitoes and flies off the eyes.

It is 1968. Ibrahim gained several inches in rotundity. Mariam is skinny, supple, elegant, and gorgeous. The couple has seven kids. Ibrahim is contemplating to marry again under the pretence of needing more boys. Mariam is not rebelling but Ibrahim is receiving signs of her refusal. Ibrahim could marry again if he wishes but it is a very costly project; Ibrahim would have to build an extension to the house for the new wife and pay an enormous sum for the family of the new wife and the wife too.

Find the above suitcase at Couverture.

Of course, honeymoon packing differs depending on the destination. However, there are a few key things that you won’t want to forget.

A map and travel book on the area. You can get great entertainment ideas from these little guys.

Travel pharmacy. This is more for those going out of country. If you don’t know the culture, and especially if you aren’t fluent in the language, take everything you need that would prevent a honeymoon disaster. This includes Pepto Bismol, Monistat, AZO Standard (A must for newlyweds…by the way, this won’t cure you, it just dulls the pain until you can see a doctor), Airborne or some kind of cold-prevention, and extras of any prescription medicine you and your new hubby take.

Important documents and copies of them. This includes a copy of your marriage certificate, passports and driver’s licenses, airplane tickets and confirmations, reservation confirmations for your hotel, as well as any activities that you’ve planned ahead of time, phone numbers for your credit card company in case they get lost or stolen, and your credit or debit cards. Personally, I recommend debit cards. You don’t want to start your marriage in debt. Also, don’t take too much cash, because the exchange rate is generally better electronically than with cash.

Your trousseau. This is French, derived from a word meaning ‘bundle’. It is actually the clothing and linen of a bride, traditionally provided by her family. Today, this can simply mean the wardrobe purchased for the honeymoon. If you are trying to pack light, think layers. Take a swimsuit, even if you are going to a cold area of the world. You never know if you’ll want to visit the hot tub. Take a light sweater or shawl that can be dressed up or down. If you can, try to pack in generally the same color (black or brown). This way you won’t have to take so many pairs of shoes and accessories. Be sure to pack a pair of comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing and some strappies for a nice dinner out. Try rolling your clothes instead of folding them. This saves space. If you will be traveling from city to city or switching hotels at some point during your honeymoon, it’s a good idea to get a suitcase with wheels. It’s no fun to carry around a big duffel bag on your back, even if it’s just from baggage claim to the cab to the hotel.

Pack your carry-on as though it’s your only bag. Put an extra set of clothing, any important documents and valuables in your carry-on. This way, if your checked bag gets lost or is just late, you won’t be at a total loss.

Extra space for bringing home tangible memories.

Segno di Chvostek A) tipo I, B) tipo II (tratta da Signs of Hypocalcemia: Chvostek’s and Trousseau’s Signs, Urbano FL, 2000)

Wedding is the biggest dream event for girls in India. This is the d-day when all the eyes would be on her and she wants to make the most of it in everyway, after all she is the queen today. Marriage being the most extravagant affairs calls for lavish celebrations and vibrant dresses. Here are some handy tips to help you hunt for the best and trendiest wedding ensemble.

Colors

The Hot colors this season are jewel tones and metallic colors like Gold, Silver, Copper, Bronze, Emerald Green, and Blue. Burgundy, Cherry Red, Brick and Wine color are some other safe options. Pastel shades continue to be popular as well.

Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee vouches for myriad hues of crushed diamonds, sapphires and rubies, brought alive with the luster of liquid gold, silver and copper and textured, to work fabulously with Indian skin tones and features.

Fabrics

Banarsi koras, silks, tissues, organza and brocades are some of the most popular choices. Flowy chiffons and georgettes are also in great demand.

Embroidery

The challenge here is to smartly blend classical with the contemporary– so you see streamlined fits with traditional intricate embroidery—in dull antique gold or metallic. Kundan work is popular and so are mukaish, zardozi, mirror, gota and pearl work. Add crystals for that extra dazzle and you have that perfect look.

The Silhouette

The silhouette is tight and neatly cut and extremely feminine. The fish-cut skirt is popular, as is the A-line ghagara with a fitted choli. The emphasis, according to Neeta Lulla is on the shoulders and back.

Accessories

Maangtikas and bindis are going to be really popular this season and so is Diamond jewelry. Jadau and kundan jewelry are also in vogue. Neeta Lulla recommends classical jewelry because she believes that jewelry lasts whereas fashion doesn’t. Kaleeras are also a rage this wedding season, so make sure that you do buy one for yourself.

Body Tattoos / Stick-ons designed to serve as arm bands, necklaces or body ornaments are gaining popularity and are in great demand today.

To complete the look, go for ethnic silk clutch bags and comfortable footwear.

According to Neeta Lulla “Elegance is the buzzword and a lavish use of fabric, textures and the dupatta in different drapes are very in. I am even doing two dupattas, one for head and one for the body”.

Designer Manish Malhotra suggests a “sans-accessories-high-on-costume” look. According to him, this wedding season brides can play down the accessories and make their outfits the prime focus. After all, Priyanka made a bold fashion statement for brides-to-be in “Dostana” with an intricately embellished lehenga which had a traditional yet contemporary twist with long slits.

Your wedding day is meant just for you. That is why you need to shine and look your very best, so no matter what you wear just top it up with oodles of confidence and you will certainly leave a mark.

Piazza Sempione was the street where the couple opened their first shop. Every garment and accessory is entirely produced and distributed at the headquarters in Milan.”

Nice little article about Piazza Sempione–Italian Luxury written by Kendrick Daye (contributor), October 9, 2007 in the broowaha Miami Edition.

“The designs and fabrics used by Piazza Sempione produce a look that declares timeless elegance, provides a flattering fit, subtly exudes quality and provides an incredibly comfortable wear; so much so that, like the Salvatore Ferragamo signature 2-inch heel sling back shoes, you could run in this dress if you wanted to.” Comment from regular customer Mona P.

A new style of French pants?

According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (Fourth Edition, 2000):

trous·seau, n. [French, from Old French, diminutive of trousse,
bundle. See truss.] The possessions, such as clothing and linens, that
a bride assembles for her marriage.

Throughout history, single young women all over the world have
prepared for their change in marital status by accumulating a
trousseau. A traditional trousseau — stored in a hope chest –
included bridal accessories, jewelry, lingerie, toiletries and makeup,
plus bed linens and bath towels for her new home.

From Victorian times till today, the trousseau also has consisted of
brand-new outfits to see a woman through her wedding, honeymoon, and
newlywed days.

Oftentimes the garments in a trousseau were hand-sewn by a a mother,
aunt, grandmother, or the girl herself, if skilled with a needle.
Wealthier families procured the skills of a professional seamstress to
outfit the bride-to-be. [honeymoons.about.com/cs/shopping/a/bridaltrousseau]

Who cares of I did not have something blue? I got a husband and I’m thrilled with that gift.

Marriage is an event for a lifetime. Every youth wishes to make that special moment a memorable even

Marriage is an event for a lifetime. Every youth wishes to make that special moment a memorable event not only for him/her but for all those who become a part of it. Today wedding ceremonies have become a status symbol for all therefore the marketing aspect plays a very significant role in the whole celebration.

Of the several aspects that come up once the marriage is finalized, themost important are probably the shopping and marketing. This is an extensive process, and as is quite obvious, involves a lot of expenditure. It begins with the purchase of the apparel for the bride and groom respectively. The groom makes the choice of his wedding suit which he would wear at the marriage reception, popularly known as ‘bou bhat’ in Bengali marriages. Previously it was some stylish ‘dhoti’ or ‘churidar’ or ‘pajama’ and ‘panjabi(kurta)’ with lots of embroidery which was the most favourite among grooms for this occasion . But these days they are opting for the alternative called ’sherwani’, the preference of which is growing day by day.
