Noise takes place in the Blame! world but it is a prequel and explains how the future has become a world of miles high machines and buildings. The artwork is sparse as is the dialogue but the overall impact of the manga is not affected. Great for crossover graphic novel readers looking for an entry into manga.

Tout d’abord, The End of Mr Y. de Scarle

This month, I loved The End of Mr Y by Scarlett Thomas, Biomega by Tsutomu Nihei, Luxe by Anna Godbersen, The Rose & The Beast by Francesca Lia Block, 1940-1944 années érotiques by Patrick Buisson (on sexuality during France’s occupation by Germany during WW2) and Galliano by Colin McDowell, of which more later.
Sorry, I really don’t have the time to translate all that I’m saying about the books.

Akira and Lone Wolf & Cub aside, I’ve very little experience of manga. I’ve always been left cold by the overt sexual imagery and preponderance of school girls and ‘tentacles’ in many of the titles. Recently however, I came across some of the stunning art-work in Tsutomu Nihei’s BLAME! series and decided to give it a go.

In BLAME!, protagonist Killy travels ever upwards through the gargantuan floors of The City, a chaotic mix of maze-like corridors and vertiginous caverns reminiscent of H.R. Geiger. It’s implied that The City started on earth but, ever-expanding, has now encompassed the orbit of the moon (in fact, Nihei has since suggested that The City is the approximate size of a Dyson Sphere). Killy is in search of Net Terminal Genes, a genetic marker which allows the user access to The Netsphere. Through this Killy aims to regain control of The City from the Safeguard, a horde of bio-mechanical horrors whose sole function is to kill those who access The Netsphere without authorization.

First things first though. If you’re after a detailed narrative and complex characters then BLAME! is not for you. The plot is impenetrable at times and it’s not uncommon for an entire issue to contain no dialogue as the panels follow Killy on his forlorn journey through this nightmarish landscape. In many ways BLAME! is not a conventional story at all but more of a mood piece. Nihei lets his art do the talking, the incredibly detailed environments implying so much yet forcing the reader to draw their own conclusions.

With BLAME!, Nihei has created a world that is frightening, ugly and beautifully realised. It’s not for everyone but, for those who get it, BLAME! is a compelling and unique piece of work.

BLAME!

Perché tutto ciò dovrebbe interessare i lettori italiani?

He doesn’t draw out the hand…but draws out the fucking face. And draws the hand. Jesus, you make no sense. That is chapter 59’s featured safeguard, the ‘Old Man’. Unsurprisingly, that mofo is also blown away by Killy’s fucking monster of a gun.

Panel Three

I like Nihei’s explosions. They’re vast. Like atom bombs across the pages. Shit, I still haven’t read the BLAME!2 thing. funny’s saying something but I’m ignoring him.

Panel Four

Originally Harvest was supposed to be all like, “TRY GETTING A RESERVATION AT DORSIA NOW, YOU STUPID FUCK” but since we only had five panels to work with, stuff had to get cut. Plus we wanted to keep things totally non-talky throughout.

Panel Five

Yeah, a little fountain is positioned directly where Snowflake falls. I think funny was going to do a pool at first, then wanted a fountain because…fountains are pretty. So he says right now. Anyways, sorry about compressing so much action into five small panels but BLAME! funny for it. Blame him for anything.

Hey, Ink, who was your favorite safeguard?

Killer Ink: I didn’t read much of BLAME!

prettyprophet: You read something. Name one.

Killer Ink: Sanakan.

prettyprophet: See? You read enough. nde, what about you?

nde: Only safeguards?

prettyprophet: We’ll do silicon creatures another day.

nde: Level 9.

prettyprophet: Sexy. I’m going Sanakan myself. Dhomo’s hot and everything, but fuck that, Sanakan’s gun is BAM. I guess there’s Killy himself, but he doesn’t count as safeguard.

funny_bunny: My favorite…ISN’T THE OLD MAN SAFEGUARD! OHOHOHO. Oh wait, it is the old man safeguard.

prettyprophet: Well, obviously. You keep drawing him.

funny_bunny: He’s just TOO DREAMY! He BITES Killy. Also Mao is just like prophet and that’s satisfactory.

prettyprophet: Mao. What a name.

- Carlsen further announced two additional shoujo projects, but has not disclosed them yet.
- Manga marked with an “*” are on my shopping list

Comment:

Well, what should I say…a very meager amount of interesting licenses. Carlsen has two nice seinen, with Lady Snowblood and NHK, but I’m already buying the latter. My favorite license by far is Biomega by Nihei. I loved Blame and was eagerly awaiting a new series by him. As you can see from the numbers, less seinen and more shoujo and especially shounen ai got licensed. Indicating that the market is not yet ripe for more mature manga and maybe never will be.

Fall and winter would be boring, if it wasn’t for the American publishers releasing some seinen as well. I hope the euro will remain strong, so their manga stays low priced for me…and now it’s time to shed some manly tears! ;(

BLAME! is a cyberpunk manga by Tsutomu Nihei, who also created the Wolverine miniseries Snikt. I bought the first volume only knowing that it was cyberpunk and nothing else. Since I only have the first volume out of ten, I’m going to give my thoughts on this one volume and will try not to judge the series in general.

The first thing you’ll notice when you read the book is that the artwork is extremely stylized. It takes place in a dystopian future where the planet has been covered by an endless system of skyscapers and machinery filled with all sorts of deadly cyborgs and artificial beings. Everything from the surroundings to the characters are very well drawn, and I particularly like some of the cyborg creatures. However, sometimes the artwork works against it. I found it hard to follow what was going on sometimes, mostly during fight scenes when the panels are overloaded with detail. It reminded me of the later volumes of Hellsing when London is being attacked and there is so much going on it’s hard to tell what’s what.

The thing that hurts BLAME! the most is the lack of dialogue. The main character, Killy, talks very infrequently and a good 75% of the book has no words. The first volume doesn’t even really have a running storyline, but is instead a collection of encounters Killy has with an assortment of bizarre creatures that live in the ruins of this world. His main quest and the reason for his aimless wandering is to find “Net Terminal Genes” which are important in this post-apocalyptic world for some reason which is not given in this volume. While I enjoy the setting of this manga very much, the story in the volume is too scattered and the book ends rather abruptly.

One big thumbs up I’d give to the book is for the amount of violence in it. Most things crawling around this world have a “mutilate first ask questions later” attitude, except the “ask questions later” part is also mutilate. In one scene Killy walks up to what looks like a small boy and tries to initiate a conversation when all of a sudden a bullet hits the kid in the head causing it to explode. I rather enjoyed the panel with the kid’s eye coming right at you. Oh don’t be like that, the kid was a horrible monster that kills humans. Killy’s no pushover though. His gun, which looks like a pistol, shoots rounds that explode like they were rocket propelled grenades and when this hits hit enemies they splatter something fierce.

This volume is much thicker than many other manga you’ll see and at its $9.99 price is a good deal. Although, like I said, the majority of this book is textless pages of the main character exploring. So even though it’s thicker, you’re not really getting much more for your money in some respects. If you’re the really artsy type you’ll enjoy the many pages of great architecture and character design and will love it for that price.

As for what I think about the book, I think that it was just good enough to get me to read the rest of the series, not for the price printed on the book though and I’m not going to actively look for it. If I’m looking through a box of manga at a con and I see some volumes discounted or find the series on eBay for a deal I might get it but otherwise I have other, better things to read… like Battle Angel Alita: Last Order.

If you’re interested in this manga, and in supporting this blog, you can buy it from Amazon through us.

One of my old favorites:

I credit Blame! for really getting me into manga (and therefore anime). Before I was just reading things I came across by (Clamp work, Seven Seas licenses, other random things), but Blame!’s seriousness and deep nature triggered a realization into me that: “manga could be really serious”.

Blame!’s story is very simple. But takes place in a very complicated world.

Killy is wanderer in a huge area known as the Megastructure, he travels the area in hopes of finding a person with “Net Terminal Genes” so that they may access the “Net Sphere” (basically a future version of the Internet that can give anything” and shut it down in hopes of stopping it’s chaos which is creating Silicon Creatures that seek to destroy the remainder of humanity. For protection Killy carries a powerful gun, the Gravitonation Beam Emitter, which is seemingly unstoppable.

Blame! does not rely on dialogue for it’s story. It’s just visual, And the visuals are incredible. Tsutomu Nihei (the mangaka) is an architect and he creates huge and detailed areas. This is probably why it appeals to me the most. I’m a person who loves atmosphere and dark looking areas (not the morbid dark). And probably the best quote in the first volume defines how big the Megastructure is:
Killy is at near the edge of Megastructure, you can see nothingness (which is rare) and then Killy asks someone near by “Why isn’t there any wall over there”.

At most there are only three main characters in the story. Killy, Cibo, and Sanakan. The characters are not incredibly detailed (which is not bad thing mind you) but they always look very powerful.
Killy, despite being very emotionless, does display emotions now and then. Which makes him better than the usualy zero emotion male protagonist who doesn’t give a shit about people.

Blame! is very cool. It’s a mostly silent manga, that relies on visuals and the action scenes are very intricate.
I used to be very crazy about Blame! in fact the first scanlations I ever read were Blame!’s because I was impatient about the release of the translated volumes.

After finishing Blame! I read most of Nihei’s other work: NOiSE, The single chapter stories (Digimortal, Zeb-noid, Sabrina), Abara, and Biomega (which is ongoing).

Blame!’s ending left me confused for a while, but then I understood it after recalling what Killy’s goal was.

Blame! is going to be made into a CG movie by production IG (Ghost in the Shell, Blood+, xxxHOLiC movie/anime). It might be cool, but I really don’t know the if the characters will transfer well into 3D graphics.
If Blame! were to be made into a anime series it would be difficult to make interesting, Blame! is a story you look at, not one that you watch. I would not complain if it were made into a anime because some actions scenes would really awesome. But overall if it were to happen I really hope that the art director would be Tsutomu Nihei himself.

My rant’s finished. Now please go read all ten volumes of Blame!
If you like Claymore, then I suggest you atleast look at Blame!, I find them both similar in the fact that their stories both rely on beautiful, detailed, open visuals. Not to mention the main characters’ of both remind me of each other.
