Good morning. Epix is about to take the stage at this the last day of Streaming Media West. Watch the keynote live at: www.livestream.com/streamingmedialive/beta. Presentations this weekend at streamingmedia.com/west. We’ll be posting the remarks here along with a summary of what was said this week by other content distributors and producers:

Emil Rensing, Epix
Epix is a joint venture of Paramount/Lionsgate/MGM that launched three week ago as a FiOS Pay TV cable channel that for $10/month makes its content available to subscribers on any platform : on TV, on demand, and online. Epix owns the multiplatform rights for all their titles in the PayTV window of 9-10 months after theatrical release for at least 2y and doesn’t have restrictions on their content like legacy cable providers who signed deals 10 years ago and now have to renegotiate rights for TV Everywhere. Currently offering 180 first run blockbuster movies and classics, Epix seeks to grow it’s library to 3,000 titles as well as offer outstanding original and event-based programming similar to the HBO, Starz, Showtime model. Programming like Madonna and Kings of Leon concerts, Sam Shepard’s Tough Trade and Charlize Theron’s Atlas Shrugged. Seeking to become home to original storytellers….original programming builds brand for the network. In terms of the size of the Epix acquisition budget, having just launched they are small now 62 staff, a third focused on digital, wondering whether sponsored star-studded sitcoms like Easy to Assemble and Justine Bateman’s FM78.tv then become an attractive option. Emil Rensing, founder of Next New Networks, shares space with Boxee in New York, is a digital guy agnostic about formats, hoping to see Epix on that toaster we’ve been talking about. A media business, Epix is proud of its technology partners who provide a seamless playback experience: Akamai, Adobe, ClipSync. Amazing friending feature allows you to invite up to four friends to sit in a virtual screening room, watch the movie together, and chat via pop up speech bubbles. The friends do not need to be an Epix subscriber. You can check out Epix this weekend. Three day passes are available at www.epixhd.com/invite. Watch Iron Man, Cloverfield, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, all four Indie Jones movies, even Scorsese’s Mick Jagger doc, Shine a Light. Epix will be the first to run the Star Trek movie in the new year, so stay tuned.
(per SMW remarks)

Anthony Soohoo, CBS
CBS distribution strategy online, on mobile, in the connected home has been open, non-exclusive hyperdistribution to AOL, Yahoo!, Google, MSN. CBS.com watch full shows. TV.com nexgen navigation with integrated TiVo functionality and online personalized guide watchlists for the 20mm users of TV.com (2mm iPhone app downloads). TV shows now, movies in the pipeline. CBS Web Originals believes there are different ways to tell stories in terms of byte size text format, take about 3-4 different shows on a quarterly basis, on a project finance basis, find a sponsor working with the creators, then distribute across CBS properties and CBS Audience Network, bring expertise on sales side, largest video sales force out there, CBS Interactive is the 4th largest video player in the world, reach on a monthly basis 120mm. Offer content creators sales and distribution piece mixed up with the TheInsider.com, TV.com, Chow.com, CBS.com. 300 syndicated partners. A combination of having limited resources and it being early stage for the connected devices, focusing more on mobile right now. TV Everywhere great for consumer, but only 52% of broadcast nets making content available, 10% cable nets, no economic model/measurement.
(per Commonwealth Club SmarterTV remarks)

Tom Gorke, MTV
Tasked with monetizing content off owned and operated 300 websites worldwide, goal is multiplatform, to stay close to consumer, drive awareness and traffic. MTV is the largest provider of content to Xbox and iTunes. The biggest driver of paid download to own is the need for portability, take it with you on the flight. The need to aggregate a library of content has matured. Done well on Hulu, Fancast, Atom, GameTrailers, DailyMotion, Veoh. MTV is all about automation, too much content, it wouldn’t scale if had to customize, even putting a flag in a feed is tough. Have close relationship with syndication partners, provide exclusive one off promotional content, lots of assets, art work, graphics. Syndication partners care most about reliability and regularity of delivery, and standards of quality of content. FB pulls a lot of content from MTV. Really saw the power of Twitter during the VMAs with Kanye West. MTV integrates Twitter into sites, audience of engaged folks. Leading provider of mobile content, sold over 1mm of the 16 iPhone apps, VCast. Live streaming tentpoles like Kids Choice Awards, VMAs. Live streaming is completely different technology (Ustream, Justin.TV, Kyte, Livestream). When Ashton Kutcher did his Fantasy Football Show on Ustream viewership went from 100,000 to 1mm viewers, it had a watercoolers effect and was played everywhere all at once. For the experiment, bought ad unit and inserted Ustream player – was expensive.
(per SMW remarks)

Vanessa Pappas, Next New Networks
500mm streams online in 3 years, 30mm views/month, believe in super-syndication concept, be where the audience is. Yahoo! has been great for family entertainment, long form does well on iTunes. TubeMogul is integrated in content management system but do a manual refresh to optimize sites that perform for you. Recently hired category manager from YouTube. Know your syndicated partner’s audience. On Twitter you can’t just post and pray, need to have dialogue with engaged community. Share office with Boxee, getting on Boxee, Roku..
(per SMW remarks)

Brett Wislon, TubeMogul
Free supersyndication service to Blip.tv, Break, Brightcove, DailyMotion, eBaum’s World, Facebook, Graspr, Grind TV, Howcast, i2TV, Imeem, Metacafe, MSN Video, Myspace, Revver, Sclipo, Sevenload, Streetfire, Twitter, StupidVideos, Veoh, VideoJug, Y! Video, YouTube, Viddler, Vimeo, 5min, Zoopy. Best campaigns are hybrid like the recent intentionally lame Windows 7 videos. Got 5.5mm views in September, impressive for a brand. http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/24/video-windows-7-launch-party-parody-is-bleeping-genius/3. Most have given up on trying to make money in online video. Although YouTube is 50% of the game, study found that those that also syndicated to niche sites saw a 100x increase in viewership than those just on YouTube. Greater success with vertical focus. Analytics allow you to see where video is most embedded, can see if a specific mommy blog is an important outlet and starting feeding them exclusive content which they love because content drives traffic. Moving from super-syndication (content everywhere blast) to hyper-syndication (content to engaged fans fast). FB has no video strategy but is a top ten video site. Study found most engaged viewers came from Twitter.
(per SMW remarks)

Brandon White, FUNimation
License anime content, aim to meet the needs of the licensors in Japan. Syndicated via ad-supported video, iTunes, Xbox/Zune, PS3. Use YouTube for fingerprinting. Plan to syndicated across all CE devices – mobile, Blu-ray, web-enabled tvs.
(per SMW remarks)

Jim Louderback, Revision 3
Syndicates 20 shows including Diggnation broadly anywhere, anytime, any device, want to be where our audience millennial men live. Auto-syndicates with Tubemogul but still need to manually refresh metadata at each site.
(per SMW remarks)

Dominik Rausch, Eleven Minutes Production, Easy To Assemble
EasytoAssembleSeries.com is a sponsored star-studded sitcom that has garnered 4.2mm+ views between its Season I & II on MyDamnChannel, YouTube, Ikeafans.com, KoldKastTV, Hulu. Also distributed on iTunes. In talks with DVD sales, releasing on hotel networks, subtitles for 10-15 additional countries in Europe & Asia. Innovative series where in addition to celebrities like Illeana Douglas, Justine Bateman, Tom Arnold…IKEA is a co-star. Web series same premium quality as film, all 10 episodes of second season strings together as a movie. Production company is thinking of new ways to make content adapting to fragmented time-shifting society. As traditional TV distribution disappears, new media will take over distribution for all platforms.
(per Commonwealth Club SmarterTV remarks)

Brent Friedman, Electric Farm
Production budget for Crackle’s Woke Up Dead is over $1mm, high for a web production but has talent attached which attracted integrated sponsors like Kodak. (Premise of show is friend trying to monetize fact that friend is a living zombie, sub-plot pitching to brands for sponsorship). Sometimes you have to take a risk to get a bigger payoff just like more marketing dollars equals more views. Kodak also cross-promoted on their own site which over a million monthly uniques. Valemont is a success with an engaged community of 25,000.
(per SMW remarks)

Thom Woodley, Dinosuar Diorama
All-For-Nots co-produced with Eisner’s Vuguru. Doesn’t like sponsor integration, hurts show creatively, prefer ad-insertion, and smaller more engaged audiences of 50-100,000, hasn’t quit his day job as ad agency exec yet. Show All’s Faire about the Renaissance Faire reaches 20,000 Renaissance Faire fans plus sci fi, comics and comedy buffs.
(per SMW remarks)

Many thanks to conference director Dan Rayburn who embraces his attendees, offering them his cell number, free industry analyses and business development introductions. He was an enormous help to me with my Smarter TV event and this post. He lives and breathes the stuff, and it shows. Check out his post on the market:

What is the difference between “leadership” and “management”?

This past Wednesday night, over 50 CEOs and Founders from across the Trinity Ventures portfolio gathered together for our annual CEO and Founder dinner to debate this question. Imbued by energized networking and copious cocktails, we explored and debated the fundamentals of leadership and management in difficult times, since, especially in this economic environment, world class leadership and management skills are crucial to the success and growth of a business. While our portfolio company leaders represent an extremely seasoned and high caliber group of executives, all enjoyed revisiting and reflecting on these fundamental values. I thought it worth summarizing the key examples and takeaways as I found it a good fit with the spirit of IronGiving.

The discussion topic, Leadership in Difficult Times, was facilitated and led by our guest speaker, Professor Charles O’Reilly from the Stanford Business School. Professor O’Reilly’s discussion included aggressive Socratic style cold calling of the audience (after all, he is a business school professor) and spirited debate. We examined three real world scenarios brought to life via video clip interviews with three high tech CEOs: Bill Campbell, former CEO of Intuit, current Chairman who covered a situation where his authority as a CEO was openly challenged, Kent Thiry, CEO of DaVita who covered an instance where a high performer on his team clashed with the existing company culture (be sure to click on his name to watch the YouTube video and get a flavor for his colorful leadership style) and Brian NeSmith, CEO of Blue Coat Systems who covered a scenario where an engineering rock star was disrupting productivity.

The most succinct answer to the above question came from Brett Wilson, CEO and cofounder of TubeMogul, an online video analytics and advertising startup Trinity invested in earlier this year. Brett stated emphatically, “Leadership is about inspiring the team to win the game, and management is about the x’s and o’s of how to win”. I couldn’t agree more and as a former crew team guy, I thought the image above captured this mixture well - inspired team members can pull hard on the oar but they also need to do so in unison and with rhythm.

I won’t go into the details of each scenario but the high level takeaways include:

- CEOs need to embody BOTH leadership and management to be effective. This was the simplest yet biggest lesson. The best CEOs do both. It isn’t easy, but the rewards and returns are even greater for those who can.

- CEOs are signal generators. What they do and say ripples across an organization in unspoken and obvious ways faster than you think. Be aware and cognizant of your actions at all times.

- Firing someone is hard, but not acting quickly and decisively to address performance and/or culture fit problems is usually even more damaging to the company and other people involved.

I’ll try and get the full set of slides that Professor O’Reilly went through and post them here as I think they are useful for any reader to take a quick look at, stay tuned for those. In the meantime, I welcome any comments or examples of great leaders who balance both leadership and management.

Update – here are the slides from Professor O’Reilly. They don’t contain the embedded video interviews we went through during the dinner but it should give you a good sense of the material covered and ideas discussed, enjoy —

Social media tools for socialites that is becoming increasingly popular is the internet. Reasons could be many, but main one is the content generated by the users which is directly from the public. Social networking sites and very popular with the users, and plenty of them can be found online. They are free to use and are advanced in technology. The concept of social media optimization utilizes such forms of media for increasing your website popularity and value. As a form of online marketing strategy, it is also a part of functions carried out by the search engine optimizers. In social media optimization whet website pictures itself as an expert, not as a business. Optimization of your content by keyword is crucial here. Make sure you update your content on regular basis. Do not forget to use apt keywords and phrases, but stay within limits and do not over stuff your content. When starting SMO, you should submit your main site to as many social networking sites as possible. Social Media Optimization requires lots of effort and hard work, similar to Search Engine Optimization. One will not be able to craft web space and presence without being patient and hard working. It is the unlimited web presence offered to the website optimizers, that is the main advantage of social networking sites. To increase business popularity, Social Media optimizers can use its name and reputation. Some use a fictional name for this purpose, which is also OK. We can therefore craft a profile of our virtual and non-existing person, but it should be avoided if possible. No matter what name you use, it is crucial that your profile shows strong background and experience in the required field of business. The most common cause of the marketing tools and techniques failure is inadequate exposure to the business that is being promoted which later leads to brand anonymity. It is very important these days that marketing is done in proper and continuous manner. Promoting is very difficult with a new business, but if you do it in a planned manner you can have really good results. Online business, in order to be successful, needs you to put a lot of work and effort. Many optimizers have agreed that social media optimization is a good option for effective website optimization.

Social Media Optimization also involves a clear strategy of the specific tool adoption. Sometimes, the selection of tools are very important more than the Social Media approach. The selections of tools directs us towards a clear goal of reaching our target audience and this has to be planned to what is the overall reach one is looking at. In some cases this is tedious in nature ensuring every tool is connected to each other to ensure a seamless content distribution. But there are some tools such as Friendfeed, Facebook, Tubemogul which helps content dissemination easier.

There has been a significant evolution with the current tools which have come up with more integration options. Thus, hoping to similar evolutions in future which will make things more organized and smoother for any Social Media Programs

blip.tv held a press conference this morning to unveil a slick creator dashboard and a host of new content partners that span old and newteevee including YouTube, Roku, WNBC and Verizon FiOS.

The new blip dashboard offers a raft of features including single upload to multiple partners such as YouTube (s GOOG), Vimeo and TiVo (s TIVO), through an expanded partnership. Creators can serve ads to the videos distributed to YouTube and elsewhere through FreeWheel (which just announced a trial with YouTube yesterday).

blip also has built new analytics tools into its dashboard courtesy of TubeMogul. One neat trick in particular is the ability to watch your video alongside a second-by-second graph that shows you the exact moment people stopped watching (or rewound and re-watched).

The living room box Roku (which also has content from Netflix (s nflx) and Amazon (s amzn) VOD) will bring independent shows on the blip network to big-screen TVs starting this fall. In addition to Roku, blip fans can enjoy a lean-back experience while watching blip content through Verizon FiOS On Demand.

blip is also making the jump to broadcast TV, in a small way. Select TV programs will air on WNBC’s digital TV channel New York Non-Stop — which is great, we guess, if you live in New York.

A pretty makeover and more distribution is fine; the trick now will be for blip content to be more signal and less noise. Just being on a big-screen TV is not the same thing as people finding and watching you on a big-screen TV.

Marketers and agencies as well as social media leaders using Veeple’s Interactive Online Video (IOV) platform (.com) will have greater distribution choices for their online video campaigns as a result of an agreement with TubeMogul (http://www.tubemogul.com/), the most popular online video distribution platform.

The agreement allows Veeple customers the use of TubeMogul’s signature “Load and Track” service which gives users the capability to upload videos once and automatically deploy them with as many of the top video sharing sites as they want, within the users’ specified accounts.

“Veeple is all about enhancing, engaging and measuring online video campaigns. Our customers expect not only simplicity in our service but also a platform that quickly evolves with their needs. As we evolve the Veeple service we knew that syndication was a top priority for our customers who are increasingly adding online video to their marketing mix.” said Scott Broomfield, CEO and co-founder of Veeple.

Humanity’s true advantage over any other species is our ability to build on past information.

Humanity’s true advantage over any other species is our ability to build on past information. We have a keen sense of observation to determine how the world around us works, and we possess language to record and pass on those observations. Thousands of years of compiled information in mathematics, science, architecture and engineering has steadily advanced cultures around the world.

When simplified, much of this observation, trial-and-error and progress boils down to one word – Analytics. Our ability to analyze past records and utilize the resulting statics has been paramount to our species’ progress. In a sense, analytics has existed since our modest beginnings, sitting around a cave fire: “Note to self. Eating rotting meat does not bode well for digestion. I will tell Grok of my findings. Next time, we won’t eat rotting meat.”

Today, analytics has progressed to a technological art form built on decades of information compiled into networks of computer databases. Cutting-edge computer software allows massive amounts of information to be analyzed, compared and directed towards executing a strategic ‘next step’ in a fraction of a second. Governments, economies and industries sway to the beat of analytics to determine their next logical step.

There are a number of analytics software solutions today that specialize in a variety of industries. I’d like to highlight five great solutions below, each pertaining to a different industry. Feel free to add to the list with any other top-notch analytics software that you know of.

1. Google Analytics: Google is the king of analytics with its easy-to-install, in-depth and widely used online software package. Google Analytics allows a web site creator to easily track their site’s statistics : from basics like average visitors and time on site to more specific stats like browser-type and geographic breakup. Any webmaster that doesn’t have Google Analytics installed might as well be sitting by the fire eating rotting meat.

2. Mint.com : Mint is a user friendly personal finance application that lets you download, categorize, and graph all of your finances on a day-by-day basis. The site offers seamless analytics: from graphs that project what your savings will be in 6 months to comparison charts that determine whether you are spending more than the average person on coffee. A must have for anyone that needs help during this economic downturn to track and curb their spending habits.

3. Newton Software: Newton is an intuitive online recruiting software solution that allows a company to manage and track hiring, announce job openings and review resumes. One if its best features is a cutting-edge analytics module that allows a business to easily evaluate its recruiting program: from pinpointing bottlenecks to determining the average speed of hiring. It enables a company to view their hiring and applicant management from either a birds-eye-view or from the lens of a microscope. Newton is essential for any business that wants to improve their recruiting process.

4. TubeMogul.com: TubeMogul is a nifty web 2.0 site that allows you to upload your user-generated video content to multiple sites in one fell blow (YouTube, DailyMotion, Vimeo, Revver, Brightcove, and many more). Its most impressive feature is an extensive analytics suite that lets you track various statistics across multiple sites, including view minutes, viewer attention, per-stream quality and syndication tracking. In-depth viewership statistics is an invaluable feature for companies that are trying to virally spread their brand message.

5. Power E-Trade Pro: E-Trade’s Power Pro Online Stock Trading software enables even the most savvy investor to improve their performance by utilizing a well-crafted analytics suite. The analytics includes advanced charting features, unlimited customization, and a range of technical studies to help capitalize on every potential market opportunity.

I am an idiot.

There. I have said it.

Here I go flapping my fingers all over the place and invite all you goode people to GIVE ME YOUR GREAT CONTENT (cause I am also a hog) and then I go and do this royally embarrasing flop: I received some very useful information in form of a guest post by Hardy aka Dirty Wallace on May 19th, 2009 and I DID NOT DISCOVER IT UNTIL THIS MORNING.

People. I am so sorry. Hardy has great news for all of you out there and I neglected to get it out to you sooner.

*note to all who are still waiting for your guest posts to be published–should there be more–please send me an email or hit me up at twitter and kindly ask what has happened… I certainly hope I have not missed anyone else, but these days, I am really not sure*

Hardy it is my pleasure to finally put you right out front on my blog! If you haven’t met Hardy yet (where the heck have you been?), you gonna apprecaite his article here and below are some ways you can connect with Dirty…

************

Video Distribution

My traditional video upload process was this– Log into YouTube, upload, wait. (Maybe make coffee, grab a sandwich, and well still wait). Then log into Viddler and repeat the process… Though I could do somethings while waiting, I was still using valuable time getting videos uploaded, and also ignoring other video sites because I had zero desire to repeat the process.

Andrea at “Andy’s Goode Life Blog” left a comment on my Goode To Be First blog the other day questioning why I was not uploading simultaneously. A bell rang, lightning struck, and I typed in some searches and came across TubeMogul. A cool tool / site that enables you to upload to many sites all at once, but better than that, it allows you to view the traffic and trends on all of these videos from a single location. Wow.

Though YouTube gets the bulk of the online video traffic, there are still plenty of other sites out there that can give you incremental eyeballs. I’ve always liked the simplicity and cleanliness of Viddler, and Vimeo is also coming on strong. The point is, why neglect any outlets, especially some like Graspr and Howcast that focus on “How To” content. I immediately included them with in my upload of “How To Open A Wine Bottle” (I hope they have a sense of humor). Why? Incremental eyeballs and outlets regardless of market share are still incremental views and multiply the chance of your videos being found, viewed, and ultimately driving traffic back to you.

Though a vast improvement on uploading site by site, TubeMogul does take a little bit of time, but you can go about your business while the videos upload. One issue that is a little bit of a challenge– If you are shooting HD and or have a long video that is over 300MB. You need to email TubeMogul to get this started.

I thank Andrea for the kick in the rump. Now I’m working smarter.

**********

Thanks Hardy! I even learned something here: I could submit a good deal of my videos to the “how-to” video site… Need to check into that for sure!

Have you seen Hardy’s video?

You can vote here for Hardy (even if you have already voted for someone else… )

If you want to analyze when and where people are watching video that’s distributed across the

If you want to analyze when and where people are watching video that’s distributed across the web, you have a few options. You could use a panel like the big measurement companies, which estimate overall trends and don’t drill down to individual streams. You could use internal data supplied by sites, whose metrics are all different. (They don’t even agree on what counts as a video view!) Or you could get a bug embedded directly into each site’s video player to keep an eye on what happens within.

But when you’re starting out in the business, you can’t just approach video publishers and sites and get them to incorporate your little line of code. It’s only now, after TubeMogul has amassed 85,000 users for its video syndication and measurement services, that it has been able to convince 15 different video sites to support its analytics platform. Those sites are: Brightcove, DailyMotion, MetaCafe, blip.tv, Break.com, Howcast, eBaum’s World, Graspr, GrindTV, Sclipo, Webcastr, Viddler, 5min, Streetfire.net and Sevenload. TubeMogul’s analytics include standardized per-second audience dropoff, referral sites and terms and geography.

This is a significant step forward for original online video creators, who are TubeMogul’s main constituency. Metrics from the new platform will be available to all TubeMogul users, including those who use the free version of the service. Though TubeMogul 2.0 won’t generate new revenue, it does give the Emeryville, Calif.-based company an edge over competitors. Video portals can only incorporate so many little lines of code into their players before they get bloated and buggy.

However, a big weakness of the TubeMogul system is it does not include YouTube, by far the largest video host. TubeMogul uses data from its partnership with Attributor to estimate YouTube viewership, demographics and pirated views. TubeMogul also doesn’t measure Hulu — which doesn’t break out per-show analytics — or any of the other TV network sites.

I was looking into the video publishing part in a Web content management implementation. Tubemogul and Hey!Spread provide the services for video publishing to multiple sites at once.

1) To give a basic understanding of what these sites do – Both have an ability to publish to multiple video sites at a single shot and have analytics to see the visitor views data.

2) So far, I think heyspread is good. They have the API and their little documentation available in their website.

3) It publishes to almost 20+ video sites, but Tubemogul is only 12 sites or so.

4) Both companies were started during almost the same time 2006. But heyspread component (part of Particles company) was launched in 2007 only.

5) Tubemogul does not have API documentation in internet yet. However, someone in a forum says it is good and we will have to contact the developers to get the API from them and access. I have emailed them about it. Let us see what they come back with.

6) Heyspread has examples as well in the internet for their API to upload.

7) Tubemogul is in Bay area, CA. Heyspread do not even mention their address in their website.

8) For heyspread, we will have to purchase to get the API key – to access the APIs and test it.

9) Only method we will be using will be UPLOAD. I looked at the heyspread API for ‘upload’ method – I believe we will use in our “content creation” module. It is straightforward, documented nicely and we can try it once we have the access key.

10) Heyspread can be accessed with most of the languages – Java, Python, Ruby, PHP etc., I believe, we will have an ability to use this in the implementation.

11) Tubemogul does not have any documentation – so we don’t know anything about their API for now. We will wait for their response.

The law of diminishing returns…

A year ago, front-page placement [on YouTube] as a “featured video” was worth about 105,000 views. Today, the average “featured” video — which is selected by YouTube staff and is not a media buy — gets 54,000 views, a 48.2% decrease, according to video analytics firm TubeMogul.

Source: “Why Free-Ride YouTube Is Finally Winning Ad Dollars,” Advertising Age, April 13, 2009

The number of overall views and viewers continues to climb – this is not the death knoll for the website. But if you are considering just posting to YouTube, not driving traffic there via dedicated means and still expecting “the magic” to happen, you might wish to reconsider.

Wow, here is a guy giving it all he has (and I hope I can help him give even more!): Kamary Phillips.

Kamary, poor guy, caught himself a nasty cold while visiting out here in Germany this past week. He is on his way back to the States and I certainly hope that he handles the flight well… nothing like a dry throut or sinus issues on a transatlantic flight.

Wait, you don’t know Kamary? Surely you have heard of Murphy-GoodeTV? Well here is his latest video…
