This is the pattern on which I used the tubular cast-on beginning with Judy’s Magic Cast-on that I talked about earlier. I love it!

You can see the edge of the hat here — a beautifully rounded ribbing edge that is very stretchy and bounces back. Give it a try — you’ll never go back to regular ribbing again!

Haven’t posted a sk8 related one in a while, but when Lofa told me about this i had to check it out.  J Webb, Mills vills finest goes for the mega ollie and while he tries to bail and kick his board out from him, i think one of his feet actually land on the board and the rest is pain history.  Hope he has a quick and onehundred recovery.

Then you got Dys Oner, with his own montage.  Stereo been showing Dyson nuthing but love since he been on that team.  We gotta find Webb a team like that.

Matt Chaffin, this kid has always been a favorite of mine. Maybe cuz he really reminds me of the hey days of skateboarding.  Baggy pants, shirts, fitted, and dope sneaks.  His style is sweet too.  Hawaiians doing it big.

Here is a list of stuff I’ve learned that I’d like to pass onto the world wide web.

You probably know all of this stuff too considering it should be fairly common knowledge, but let’s review…

WARNING what you are about to read below is extremely pretentious.

1. NEVER trust a woman who claims that she “just can’t be friends with other females.” Or says things like “I just get along with men better.” Um no. This is not good. What she’s really saying: “I have a hard time being friends with other women because I am constantly trying to steal/sleep/flirt with their men.” 

2. NEVER trust a man who says: “I just get along better with chicks.” What his statement really means: “I’d rather hang out with ppl who I can have sex with” (gay men excluded from this generalization…obviously).

3. It’s the height of rudeness to view an Evite sent to you multiple times and never respond. Responding with yes or no is far more appropriate. Viewing it multiple times just make the organizer think you are waiting to see if anyone cooler is attending.

4. Family Guy got it right again…All hot chicks with a camera think they are photographers and all emotional faux-hawked dudes with a guitar think they’re Clapton, Vaughn, King, Young or one of the many greats they’ve never even listened to.

5. Candy corn contains nicotine.

6. If you’re going to get knocked up, try to go back to public high school. They have the most cost-effective daycare.

7. Heidi Montag is the worst thing to happen to music since Auto-tune.

8. Bragging about your veganism is just a fancy way for you to forget about all the other aspects of your life where you’re a complete and utter failure.

9. You must be a junior to shop in the junior’s section. 40-50 something divorcees, I’m talking to you!

10. I’ve been getting grey hairs popping up on my head since I was 22 years old. More proof of global warming (shout out to Joe Soucheray for borrowing his line).

11. Everyone on the Real World should read more than they binge drink. Us Weekly and/or Zombie Magazines are not books.

12. There’s a limit to the amount of times you can friend and then defriend someone on Facebook. 2 times ppl! It’s FaceLAW.

13. Constantly talking about/referring to bands that you think are “cool” or “underground” does not make you either of those things.

14. Dentists are car salesman with latex gloves and an H1N1 mask.

15. When is it appropriate to tell someone: “I don’t shut up, I grow up and when I look at you I throw up.”  I chose to during my year-end review at work. Not recommended.

16. If you drink 7 Mountain Dews a day and say, “Yuck” when someone offers you a glass of water, don’t be surprised when you get kidney stones.

Tubular Conundrum

Things were a little slow at work today, so I decided to get out a scarf I’m knitting to work on while waiting for the next appointment to come in.  One of my co-workers, a fellow crafter, saw it and asked, “Is that some of that fancy yarn?”

Um, fancy yarn, what?  I don’t know exactly what she meant.  I told her that I had made it myself by tie-dyeing a cotton sweater, then unraveling it.  It’s brightly colored.  Does that make it fancy?  I guess she usually knits with cheap acrylic, because she’s very budget-conscious.  Acrylic is fine for some things, but I like scarves to be a little softer, a little more pleasant on the neck.  Fancy?

Then my boss chimed in by asking whether I make tubular things, as well as flat ones.

Yes, I do.  Totally tubular.

I believe as a dj its your job to keep the art alive.  I probably never embrace Serato, well only if i decide to go on tour again and i need it for our instrumental sets, but even then i found a site that will cut 1 off vinyl dubplate for DJs that want to have custom scratch phrases and instrumentals.  I would rather hold up my own vinyl dubplates as a badge of Gold then a lap top of MP3’s.  I love music that much and i love to give the experience of DJing and Hip-Hop that i would pay for my own dubplates.  Electric Drums came out years ago, but you wouldn’t catch Clyde Stubblefield backing James Brown with none of that junk…bottom line is you can dislike my opinion or think i’m wack, when i’m on the decks its pure Hip-hop needle to the groove, analog low, vinyl crunch, physical records being shuffled like a human jukebox….how about some we just give the drummer some, cuz the drummer aint had some in a long time, HIT IT!

It is like magic! I’ve put some new links on the Techniques page including ones to Judy’s Magic Cast-0n and how it can be incorporated into a tubular cast-on. This makes a great cast -on for hats — beautiful edge, firm but with give and good resilience. It does not stretch the same amount as the 1×1 ribbing I’m using, though.

So, I’m experimenting with larger needles (first option) / varying stitch counts (if option 1 doesn’t work out) with this cast-on.

Currently I’m working with a baby/sport weight yarn (pink). I’m using 3.25mm [US3] needles for the ribbing and for my third try am using 4mm [US6] needles for the cast-on and first round only, then switching to the 3.25mm [US3]. I’ve only done about 5 rows of the ribbing, not quite enough yet to test and see if this is the magic combination!

ETA Sept 24.09: That combination of needle sizes worked great for this project!

Who would of thought i would be making woven labels? Crazy? Through the years i have learned thru trial and error what and how to run my own clothing/music label, and i say that very loosely.  After going thru the two batches of 1000 labels, i knew the next step was to bring attention to detail.  In a over saturated market, it takes a lot – not quantity, but qualitiy.  I always thought printing on the inside of a shirt was, eh, eazy way to do things.  And yes look for LS in a quality store near you. Big ups to Ryan Chun for this one, check his blog out at www.chunzilla.blogspot.com. Mills got the best style for decades. From Holo and Ryan Arakaki rocking that early 90’s style, to Fybes, Mark Gushimi, Clint Chinen, Ian Okui, and those guys bringing in the cleaner street flatground styles. To this bunch of Ruffians- Justin, Chun, Dyson, Keala, Webb, to name a few. I am missing choke people, but i do claim Mills produces the most stylistic and smooth skaters in Hawaii.

Took this from Jeff Staple’s blog! Wow, first i didn’t know that Staple dj’ed.  According to his post he was in Japan and he got to dj along side of DJ MURO and DJ KENSEI.  Wow, those two djs are known to be huge diggers!

Check the vid of Muro killing the 45’s according to Jeff Staple Muro does not use Serato or maybe he doesn’t majority of the time.  Domo Arigato Nomo Serrato!  Ehh, you like that one!  It really inspired me.  I only seen The reggae dj’s in Hawaii and Jus1oh rock only 45’s.  The reggae selectors can rock a whole set, but i never seen a Hip-Hop dj from Hawaii rock a only 45 set.  I think that might be the next goal.

here’s an artist my college roommate introduced me to. she’s an indie-pop musician known as Lights. i don’t really know what’s better, her songs or her interest in videogames and keytars. here’s her newer music video to her song “Savior”. it’s got a very poppy spacey ambiance.

i also find it amusing that she posts video blogs of her World of Warcraft character while talking about touring. is Lights SickDamage’s new favorite girl? just maybe. <3

I don’t know how i slept on this. Only a few men in this world has landing a 900 – Tony Hawk, 1999 X-Games, Sandro Dias, 2004 Latin X-Games, Giorgio Zattoni, and Alex Perelson, 2009 Maloof Money Cup. This kid is 18 years old. I’m glad to see the next gen embracing Vert skateboarding. I wish i had a chance to master vert. There is actually a handfull of Hawaii skaters that can actually skate vert – Rob Gaskell, Rob Waldron, Jared Bush, Bo Ikeda, sorry if i forgot you, my bad.

How could you not love this? Seriously, if you are a music lover this is great. First, the fact that Hardcore heads listen to Ase Rock. Second, the time and effort to record, edit, and mix the song. Third, i respect anyone that can “scream”, yes before i was “this is wack” and “what the heck” but as i was exposed to a lot more Hardcore screaming, you gotta give it up. Vocally, it is crazy. Much respect. AAAAARrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaahh.

Peeped out that Hot16 @ Trops the other night and got to talking to the homie Rhyme the OM. Well first i was talking to Keli’i of the Spacifics about Chi-Ali and the song called “Pass the 40″.  If you know this…

If you don’t know Chi-Ali, he looked like Dres of the Black Sheeps younger brother.  Got a deal when he was 14. His whole album was produced by the Beat Nuts, and remixes by Diamond D and Q-tip(i think).  The youngest member of the Native Tongues.  Also on the track was Mr. Lawnge of the Black Sheep with his on point p-nice references.  Chris Lighty & Dave Gosett, both of these cats were major A&R’s that help usher in a bunch of 90’s mcees. Dres, caps it off with another word play twister. But wait my point was the guy after Chi Ali, was none other than Hot Dog from the crew The A.T.E.E.M. Super slept on crew that Chubb Rock put on. Word was that the ATEEM was Chubb’s back up dancers, but i thought it was his cousin. Whatevers, peep the song, boom bap niceness….

We also got to chop it up about, KID HOOD.  His one verse off of the Scenario Remix, bought a buzz i don’t remember any other mc bringing back then.  Really raw, but cut short after he got murdered a few days after he dropped this verse.

Look out for tracks with me and rhyme, gotsa do some boombap call and response. word up G. Outtie 5000.

Rolled up toothpaste tube.

This post is not for the stank of breath.

The thought occurred to me as I went through the usual motions of brushing my teeth. I had started the hot water running to soften the brush’s bristles. As the faucet did its job, I reached over for my tube of toothpaste. Coiled. It was near the end of its life cycle resembling something more of plastic snail than a vessel for this ADA ritual. And then the thought came: Why? Why do we do this?

Since the inception of the toothpaste tube people have coiled and curled their money’s worth from it every single time. This, in fact, is such a popular behavior that they invented special rollers to aid our literal penny pinching. However, even with rollers behind us do we ever really use the recommended amount of paste? I’ve heard it’s supposed to be pea-sized, but who actually does it? You don’t want to undershoot it and get cavities. Of course, overshooting leads to a waste of paste.

Mint-Flavored Dial, anyone?

My proposal is a new dispenser for toothpaste. Much like we do a simple pump to retrieve a specified amount of soap, why not get our toothpaste in the same fashion? This container would not only ensure good habits for children by applying the correct portion of toothpaste to their brush heads each time, but it also avoids all the physical complications of rolling the tube by hand.

And, for the sake of being environmentally conscious, make the tubes replaceable. It’s the same idea as any dispenser. Keep the main device. Reload when it’s done.

From there the skies the limit design-wise. Make the packaging as fun as the heads of PEZ dispensers or give it the bold, minimalist look of Kohler. Either way, it should find itself at home by our bathroom sinks.

So, what do you say P&G? Seems like the kind of idea that’d put smile on your face. How about you readers? While the trials of toothpaste tubes don’t exactly rank on the same radar as global warming, would any of you find this useful?
