i saw 4 basset hounds last night, 3 japanese chins, one polish lowland sheepdog, and many other breeds. i was surprised there weren’t more mutts. the mutts that did show up were so pretty and sweet.

santa did a great job. and the volunteers that helped we so upbeat and friendly.

highlights for me:

seeing how proud everyone was of their dogs and/or kids

seeing foster people having pictures of their foster dogs taken

the bulldogs in hats with their family

basset hounds in antlers are always good for a laugh

seeing people i haven’t seen in a while show up with their pet therapy dogs

In case you are wondering about what radio talk shows people in Tucson are listening too, here’s a break down of the top 10.

There 3 different stations represented here. I think it is safe to say that KNST (aka “K-nasty”) is a strong conservative station, with Rush, Hannity, Parisi, and Beck filling their airwaves. Jon Justice, also a conservative (see below), is from KQTH.

The rest of the list is made up of KUAZ shows, the local NPR station. NPR has been increasing in membership lately… there is hope!

Half of the 10 highest rated programs on talk stations are on the University of Arizona-owned station. Clear Channel’s KNST has four in the top 10 and Justice’s show is the only show to make the top 10 on Journal Broadcast Group’s the Truth.

Surviving winter in the great outdoors is difficult especially when body temperature is unreg

Surviving winter in the great outdoors is difficult especially when body temperature is unregulated and subjected to subfreezing temperatures. Insects and amphibians have some remarkable adaptations that enable them to successfully over-winter.

The dangers of ice formation in insects and amphibians are similar to those of freezing in plants. Ice must be prevented from growing within cells, instead growing in a controlled fashion in spaces between cells.

Insects either allow themselves to freeze or they avoid freezing altogether. Each strategy is not without risks.

Insects that avoid freezing, like the mountain pine bark beetles, actively lower their super-cooling point, and prevent ice formation by lowering their freezing point enabling them to tolerate temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

In order to achieve this level of tolerance they select a dry hibernating site. A waxy outer layer is impermeable to water and it serves as an excellent mechanical barrier against external ice seeding. One organ within bugs that is particularly susceptible to freezing is their gut. So insects empty it, completely, before the onset of hibernation.

In order to super-cool their blood (correctly called hemolymph) they manufacture anti-freeze proteins, alcohols, sugars and even ethylene glycol (the same compound we use in our radiators). The correct mix of anti-freeze compounds blocks ice formation and prevents its growth.

Supper-cooling is a gamble. At any temperature below 32 degrees Fahrenheit the only stable state in which water can exist is solid. Any kind of disturbance for a super-cooled bug results in spontaneous flash freezing – an instant death.

The only way to avoid this risk is to promote early and gradual freezing of fluids between cells more specifically in the cell walls. And it’s a strategy used by a variety of insects, some frogs, garter snakes and hatchlings of the painted turtle.

There are four requirements in order to successfully freeze: ice growth is promoted at temperatures just beneath 32 degrees Fahrenheit; it must be restricted to spaces between cells; the total amount of body ice is limited; and cell membranes must be protected from structural damage.

The ability to create early ice formation is unique and it is undertaken by special ice-attracting proteins in fluids between cells in their walls. These proteins are manufactured in the autumn and disappear in the spring. They essentially reduce energy barriers needed to make ice and promote a lattice (just like a fence) for ice formation.

Here’s the tricky part: If ice grows unchecked (i.e. larger and larger) it will dehydrate the inside of cells. The lethal limit of ice, in a living organism, seems to be about 65 percent of total body weight. In order to control ice, once its formation is induced, freeze-tolerant organisms must also make anti-freeze proteins. Their job is to keep ice masses small.

Some bugs in the far north are so well adapted that they posses the ability to switch yearly between freezing or super-cooling!

How do insects know when to get ready for winter? Just like plants in the Northern Hemisphere insects rely on low, above freezing, air temperatures and reduced daylight hours as their cue to get ready to freeze, or barf and get on the super-cooling rollercoaster.

Land hibernating frogs, with water permeable skin, must withstand freezing. They over-winter beneath a scant cover of leaf litter under snow where they may experience subfreezing temperatures and are not able to control their body temperatures. In one of Mother Nature’s most awesome winter feats spring peepers, chorus frogs, grey tree frogs and wood fogs freeze solid and resemble a hard baseball.

They do this by initiating freezing at minus 36 degrees Fahrenheit with high amounts of the sugar glucose (rather than alcohols that bugs use). Glucose is extremely important in protecting membranes like skin.

Very suddenly glycogen (stored glucose) in the liver is rapidly converted to glucose (sugar) and dumped quickly into the blood stream. In fact the glucose level increases 200-fold in about eight hours, until the frog becomes severely diabetic.

Not only is this risky but it becomes a race to deliver the sugar to the body tissues while freezing is progressing. A strong heart is mandatory to pump and within one minute of the first ice formation a frog’s heart beat doubles.

Within 20 hours after initial freezing 60 to 65 percent of its body water is frozen. Their heart stops, breathing ceases – the frog teeters on the edge of life. The thin litter layer and a good insulative snow cover are of paramount importance. For no frog has yet been found to survive below minus 19 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once temperatures rise in the spring, within an hour of thawing, the heart resumes beating, six hours later at 41 degrees Fahrenheit the heart rate is back to normal.

To freeze or not to freeze? It’s a question that Mother Nature has at least two exceptional answers for.

I felt so special the other day when I was in Tucson and I got to visit an air force base! It was the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, to be exact, and it was my fist time ever on a real active duty base … very exciting.

I got a visitor pass and everything, which added to the feeling of being a tourist, especially since I made one of the little penny-press souvenirs. The best part was when we were in the BX (base exchange store) and could pretend I lived on base while walking around because nobody could tell I was just a visitor (since soldiers’ families walk around there all the time)!

Its funny how life works in phases. My recent days have consisted of awakening with the sun in this bright white living room which is currently my bedroom until I aquire some manner of geriatric push button operated hospital bed to decorate my real boudoir. The mornings (or afternoons, lately. The days keep starting later) have been spent coffeeing and bathing, and the evenings devoted to reading, designing, writing, mending things I should have mended years ago, cooking actual meals with actual nutritional value, and scheming with Diana to beat the world record of nonsensical inside jokes.

Our dearly departed Amber (only until January, thank god!) has gone to meet–not her maker, but the brilliant Agent Ribbons for the remainder of their latest tour, (I’ll be joining up on Dec. 8th) and all my favorite people, new and old, present and missed, are congealing into a massive heart shaped growth in my chest that is continuing to swell with love and hope and I haven’t been this content in a very long time.

The service at McMahon’s is really great. Had such a wonderful waiter. So sweet and attentive. Initially the hostess put us in a booth whose seat was tres soft for our princely and queenly butts so we decided we had to move (seriously, we had to) to a table with firmer upholstery. Once at Eric’s table he made us feel so comfortable and welcome and immediately let us know he too doesn’t enjoy the soft seated booths.

The are martinis yummy and we didn’t worry one bit about running late or the kitchen closing. I ordered the prime rib, rare, which cooked just right and Gary and I split a side. The piano melodic and the mood relaxed. When Eric brought out a dessert sampler (unsolicited) to enjoy with our coffee it was a complimentary end to the evening.

The only thing that was off, for me, was the chi in the piano room. Maybe it was the hostess who dressed as if she were ready for inventory at an auto parts store, or the other patrons, who arrived in matching over washed tees and shabby sneakers. I know, it is unrealistic of me to expect the other patrons to arrive in leather shoes, however, I think the staff should do their best to look the part of an upscale steakhouse.

There was something off about the dining room, but, I think only a Fung Shui master could solve that dilemma for me.

All in all the experience was satisfactory.

November 24, 2009 by Gary Tibljas

This Saturday night, McMahon’s was moderately busy….a good mix of those enjoying dinner and others witnessing the progress of the Arizona-Oregon football game on the TV monitors in the bar. Too bad for the Cats by the way….ouch!

When making our dinner reservation, I requested a perimeter booth in the piano room and were granted such. We nested (or I should say sunk) into our booth and it seemed as if I had sat down on a bean bag! Our superb waiter, Eric, granted our request to move to a table closer to the pianist equipped with much more comfortable seating arrangements.

We ordered vodka martinis and Eric served them to us “Vegas Style”, as a touch of dry ice produced a foggy mist which emanated from the shakers prior to pouring. After a couple each, it was time to look over the menu and much to our surprise, no appetisers were offered. So, we had no choice but to order our entrees. I selected the fillet mignon and Leslie a rib eye (we shared an asparagus plate, as well). Both were very good and cooked to our specifications. Eric did surprise us with a small desert plate which was a nice touch.

We had a good Saturday evening at McMahon’s. The pianist was accomplished. Nice selection and variety, but he called it a night at 9 while dinner was served until 10? The Sommelier paused at our table to wish us a good evening even though we did not take advantage of his wine expertise this night.

Comparing the ”big 3″ steakhouses in town (McMahon’s, Fleming’s and Sullivan’s), I would have to say, that the service and atmosphere at McMahon’s is probably the best. A much more serene and elegant environment (given Tucson standards) primarily because the kitchen cannot be seen or heard from the dining areas. I find the kitchen being “visually accessible” to the dining area concept of Fleming’s and Sullivan’s somewhat of a distraction. As for the quality and presentation of menu items, I have never really had a disappointing experience at any of the three.

The Pac-10 is far from my favorite topic in college football. I hate USC, have no feelings toward most of its teams and the only team I follow in-depth regardless of how it is doing is Oregon. However, they are giving me things to talk about so I will not deny them. To be honest, it was a very boring week east of Arizona this week. The SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, and MWC are all wrapped up with the Big East’s deciding game upcoming. Those are all the BCS conferences and the MWC for all of you counting. All that remains is the Pac-10 so I have no choice but to discuss them.

Arizona Iced D

There is no D in the logo, so why would there be on the field?

The Arizona Wildcats choked to great effect Saturday night and essentially decimated their chances for a potential matchup with Ohio State. Granted, they have games with rival ASU and a road game at USC remaining, but a win over Oregon would have been such a confidence boost that it would be plausible. Instead, Oregon now only has the Civil War to worry about after Stanford’s loss to Cal. Expect a Duck-Buckeye matchup in Pasadena because the Wildcats would have it no other way. If you give up a TD with under two minutes and the whole field to drive, then you do not deserve a BCS bowl. Sorry, Tucson.

On the other hand, Oregon is easily the team I would most want to watch in Pasadena. You never know what they will wear and you can expect exciting football every time they take the field. I just like to watch them. Ohio State might enjoy watching them a bit less, but it should be a very good matchup. Please keep in mind that Oregon State is no pushover and could very well beat the Ducks, but the Ducks are the clear favorite in the game. I am about Pac-10′d out so let’s look at the BCS picture after Ole Miss’ upset of LSU.

BCS Picture

To see a full picture, refer to THIS PAGE. LSU’s loss opens the door for someone like Iowa to peek into the BCS picture. I am not sure if this is for the best, but I did not really want to see LSU in it anyway. I do not know who the 10th BCS bowl team will be, but we will see after the next few weeks play out. When you have Florida playing FIU and Alabama playing Chattanooga, you cannot blame me for not finding intrigue. That is about all I got for the week, but you know I wouldn’t forget about the Clowns.

CLOWN OF THE WEEK: Chad OchoCinco, Frankly, you could put him here most weeks, but I thought this deserved some pub. Chad took two guys in Pittsburgh to the mall on a shopping spree for driving him there. This all stemmed from a Twitter contest that the two guys won. Very clownish, but actually kind of cool.

KEEP AN EYE ON: Cincinnati-Pittsburgh this upcoming weekend. A BCS bid is up for grabs and Big East supremacy is on the line. Should be a great game.

View from my balcony

Today was my last full day in Chula Vista. The six days I spent out here definitely went by way too fast. The weather was perfect – low-70s and not a cloud in the sky. I forgot how much I love doing all the great climbs and hilly trail runs around here, and the omelets at breakfast were even better than I remembered! I got some awesome training in this weekend – a 3+ hour ride on Saturday with some epic climbing and a hilly 13 mile run on the trails on Sunday. I’m excited to come back out here for next year’s spring training camp.

This is the site where they're planning to build more dorms

I would’ve stayed out here longer but couldn’t get an extension because of a rugby camp that was coming in over Thanksgiving. One of the interns here told me that the OTC was currently “at capacity”. Well… it’s odd then that I had a whole sweet to myself – two rooms & common area (each room sleeps two). The first night I split the sweet with a doctor from Sweden, but he left the next day. Jen had the same setup. So that’s at least 6 people under capacity that we know of…

Whoa looks a bit crowded in there!

2010 Plans

I’ve begun nailing down a racing schedule for next year and also making some plans for warm weather training camps. I’m going to try something new next year – I’m tentatively planning on going out to Tucson for the first part of 2010 before coming back to Chula Vista (for what will be my 3rd annual spring training camp). In Tucson I’ll be training with my buddy Doug (who just had a 23 minute PR at IM Arizona today – 9:32). From everything I’ve heard Tucson is an awesome place to train. Good trails, tough climbs, and drivers that respect cyclists. The condo that we’re potentially renting looks pretty awesome too. As far as racing goes, I’m going to continue to focus on ITU WCS races. However, this year I’m going to hit up some of the big US non-draft races – mostly Olympics, perhaps Alcatraz… And as always you’ll definitely see me tearing up the local New England tri-scene

I could probably stop the blog right there. It’s really that simple. The hard part is truly knowing where you want to go. Some people think they want to go somewhere in their lives, but then wonder why they never got there. I believe it is most likely because they didn’t truly want to be there.

‘The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.’ -Denis Watley

I decided quite a while back that I wanted to do a clinical residency, so question #1 was:

Where do I want to live?

Some programs on the east coast have a great reputation and may look great on my resume, but I don’t want to live and practice there (sorry East Coasters, but it ain’t my style). Where could I ride all year round, or close to it? Where do I know people who could help make the transition easier and could tell me about where to live, how the school system is, where to ride, etc? Which leads to…

Question #2: Who do I know in these places?

For starters, I know Bill Jones at the VA CMOP (mail-order pharmacy) in Tucson because he came to our university and gave a talk, and we had chatted via email. I wanted to see if Tucson was a place I could live, so I asked to set up a rotation with Bill in Tucson. It didn’t take too much footwork, and I found myself in Tucson for a month, meeting everyone I could and asking every question I could think of about the programs, the lifestyle, the weather, the riding, the schools… I can’t do that for every rotation, but others I know without children can and have.

I was dead-set on leaving the state for residency. I wanted a new experience, and I am young still, so why not? Well, I am rethinking that now, as my daughter is not handling the recent move to a new school and home very well. I don’t know if she can handle that again in a year. So, I find myself yet again trying to figure out where I want to be so that I can figure out the road there. When you go on a road trip, you first decide where you are headed, and then you look at the route. This is no different…. but now I am looking at less than a handful of options here, and I don’t want to rule out my other prospects….

I have been feeling lost, until this last month, when I found some focus…at a retail pharmacy, nonetheless! I was at Pharmaca, where they practice integrative medicine. Alongside the traditional pharmacy are homeopathic, herbal and chinese medicines. Out on the floor, they have licensed herbalists and Doctors of Oriental Medicine. Everyone did a great job of working with each other and learning from each other, and I learned so much in that 4 weeks. I affirmed that integrative medicine resonates with me, and that I had neglected that side of me. Timing is everything. Starting up my yoga while working at this pharmacy opened up so many possibilities, and now I have an idea, a destination. The path to take I may have to just figure out using my mental compass, but it’s so good to have purpose and direction back in my everyday activities.

I am letting my curiosity lead me yet again. The neurons are firing, the ideas are flowing, and the future holds much promise. The next question is…. Who will I share the adventure with? Only time will tell….

Tuesday 10th of November- We started our time off. Some of us stayed at my parent’s house in Tucson and others spent their time at a hotel in town. We had until Saturday to recharge and refresh. It was a much needed break full of good food, movies, and relaxation.

Saturday 14th of November- We set up camp near Raven Ranch, just outside of Tucson to the East. Jay, the owner of Raven, was very generous in letting us use his empty lot next to his ranch for an entire week. This week was devoted to horse skills. We were able to use some of the facilities at the Raven including round pens, riding arenas, and soda machines. We all took a lesson from Jana, a talented young trainer in Tucson. Half of us were able to take a jumping lesson with Jana’s school horses, which was a blast! Laura Brinkerhoff welcomed us to our campsite and listened to everyone’s take on the experience so far. We had the opportunity to spend some time with Barbara Rector, grandmother of the field of equine-assisted learning. She introduced us to TROT (Therapeutic Riding of Tucson) and Al-Marah, a local Arabian ranch. We went to a local horse show to watch a riding style called dressage. We had a full week of HORSE!

Sunday 22nd of November- We are planning where to go from here. We will trailer the horses back to the AZT this afternoon. We are currently trying to decide between riding around 50 miles from Patagonia to the boarder, or riding 50 miles from Kentucky Camp in the Santa Rita Mountains to Parker Canyon Lake, about 20 miles from the boarder. It’s important for us to make sure our last travel leg is a special one. We must pick our location wisely because the semester is coming to a close and we don’t have time to complete the 130 miles left to the boarder. We have exactly one week to travel before we must pack up and head home to Chauncey Ranch. We’ll spend about a week and a half at Chauncey before completing the course.

Note: Have no fear parental units and concerned loved ones, we have a spectacular Thanksgiving dinner planned! No boring tortillas and jelly for us! We will feast on tofu and turkey! I even heard rumors about pie!
