So completely Dazed and Confused

PREVIEW: DOWNLOAD Foghat’s “Slow Ride”

Receiving its namesake from the famous Led Zeppelin song, it is quite obvious that one of the main draws of Richard Linklater’s cult film Dazed and Confused is the fantastic music of the 70’s. Whether you are into the whole classic rock scene or not, you simply will not be able to resist the high that radiates from the iconic anthems this movie features.

Even though there is basically no plot line, the songs that correspond with each scene somehow fit them perfectly. There is hardly ever a moment where there is no music playing, which helps add to the carefree attitudes of the characters. Some of the best moments of the film occur in a car, exhibiting some of the most defining songs of the decade such as Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion” and War’s “Low Rider”. When the characters arrive at the Emporium pool hall, Bob Dylan’s “Hurricane” provides for a more laid-back tone as the characters proceed to partake in activities of the green variety. Finally, as the night begins to come to a close, the laid-back guitar riffs of Lynard Skynard’s “Tuesday’s Gone” almost escorts the haggard characters back to their cars for the slow journey home.

Beginning and ending with Foghat’s “Slow Ride”, the track can easily be identified as the film’s “theme song”. As a coming of age movie, Dazed and Confused really needs no linear plot. As a typical teen in the 70’s, good music is really one of the only things these hard-living high schoolers need to be content. Alright, alright, alright.

I just spent a few hours giving the brand new Guitar Hero: Metallica (GHM) a test drive and I can confidently make two conclusions:

1. It’s fun
2. It’s hard as hell

Let’s be clear, if you don’t like Guitar Hero or Metallica, this game is not for you.

The Good

Learning from the deficiencies of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (which was still a good game), GHM starts off on career mode with two killer Metallica classics, For Whom the Bell Tolls & The Unforgivien.

I honestly can’t think of a better opening track for this game than For Whom the Bell Tolls. I’m not ashamed to admit that I got really into playing that song.

At the end of each song, the standard “You Rock” screen features the fist from the cover of St. Anger (2003) in a fun animation. I think that the cover of St. Anger is the only cool part of the whole album, so thumbs up on using it well.

The graphics and character models are far superior to anything we have seen in previous music games. The band’s movements and facial expressions are spot on thanks to some great motion capture and rendering work.

The sound quality is also out of this world on most of the tracks. I love the mixes in this game.

It also has some amazing songs.

For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Unforgivien, Fade to Black, Battery, Creeping Death, Disposable Heroes, Enter Sandman, Fuel, Hit the Lights, Master of Puppets, Nothing Else Matters, No Leaf Clover, One, Orion, Sad But True, Seek & Destroy, Welcome Home (Sanatarium), Wherever I May Roam, and Whiplash are all incredible songs.

GHM also includes a number of other songs from bands that either inspired or were inspired by Metallica. Some of the ones that really stand out to me are:

Thin Lizzy’s The Boys Are Back in Town, Mastodon’s Blood and Thunder, Queen’s Stone Cold Crazy, and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Tuesday’s Gone (which always reminds me of the movie Happy Gilmore).

As I mentioned from the beginning, this game is tough. Far harder than any other Guitar Hero or Rock Band game that has preceded it – It is the nature of the source material. Metal is fast and intricate. The difficulty is refreshing as there must be countless Guitar Hero fans who can breeze through 90% of the songs on expert without putting in much effort (That’s how I felt playing Guitar Hero World Tour). The guitar parts in GHM are rediculous, especially the Kirk Hammett shred solos – I love playing shred solos in Guitar Hero!

If the guitar is difficult, the drums are %&^*ing insane! I feel like playing with the second kick pedal that is required for Expert +mode would be fun if I was coordinated enough to do it.

The Not So Good

Almost no downloadable content. The only downloadable content that works or will work for GHM is the Death Magnetic (2008) album. It’s nice, but that album is not their best work.

I also feel like there were some classic songs that really should be in the game:

Looking at the tracks that were selected from Metallica’s first album Kill ‘em All, they only included songs that are credited to living and current members of the band. This leaves out classics like The Four Horsemen and Cliff Burton’s elongated bass solo (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth.

Other songs that are conspicuously missing are: Ride the Lightning, The Call of Ktulu (like The Four Horsemen, writing credit goes to Dave Mustaine of Megadeth), …And Justice for All, Bleeding Me, and Hero of the Day (I love the version from S&M). The absence of these songs isn’t a deal-breaker by any stretch of the imagination, but they are sorely missed (Especially The Call of Ktulu & (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth).

I have one final gripe about gameplay.

In Guitar Hero World Tour, the feature of holding lower notes while playing higher notes was introduced. I’m not crazy about all of the applications of this feature. For instance, on the song Nothing Else Matters, the opening riff is a series of open notes. Playing it on a real guitar is a no brainer. Playing it in Guitar Hero, while not difficult, isn’t very easy. A similar problem arrises in the opening riff of Fade to Black. The riff is a heck of a lot harder to play in Guitar Hero than it is on guitar because of this awkward game feature that doesn’t feel necessary or make much sense. I recognize that Guitar Hero and playing guitar have very little to do with one another, but the feature itself just doesn’t make sense to me.

This is a good game. Not perfect… but how many games are?

If you like Guitar Hero and Metallica – Buy it.

If you like Guitar Hero but find the previous installments too easy – Buy it.

"The Unforgiven"

Morning.  I’m in the mood for some southern rock this morning so let’s just get right to it.  I promise not to inflict “Free Bird” on you, but if you’re talking southern rock on a Tuesday, then you’re still talking Skynrd:

Say what you will about the genre or Skynrd themselves, but any way you cut it that’s a great song.  For the record, the title’s “Tuesday’s Gone” and it’s on the band’s 1973 debut Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd, which surely is the only album with the word “nerd” in the title that any self-respecting redneck wouldn’t be embarrassed to own.  Not only are “Free Bird” and “Gimme Three Steps” (a song I don’t really care for, but a hit for the band) on this record, but this gem as well:

It’s somewhat of a shame that “Simple Man” is probably most widely recognized as the soundtrack to a beer commercial these days, because that’s another really good song.  I like when Skynrd plays at this tempo.  It’s almost power-ballad territory, but with a working-class mentality instead of the latter day rock ballads that more often than not expressed the regret of a lost lay.  There’s a purity to the sound as well.  Those guitars sound like guitars plugged into amplifiers, not computers.  Despite having heard these songs on the radio pretty much my entire life I still find them refreshing every now and then, and more so as I get older and modern rock moves further away from this sound.  On the other hand, I basically can’t listen to CCR at all anymore though, so take this assessment for what it’s worth.  Nor do I really care for the Drive-By Truckers, who have found recent critical acclaim and a huge following these days all while wearing their love for Skynrd on their dixie-flag sleeves.  Here’s a similarly minded song from Molly Hatchet though that I wasn’t familiar with and am digging at the moment.  This is “Fall of the Peacemakers” (great title) from 1983’s No Guts…No Glory:

“How many times must good men die?”  Excellent question, Molly.  All right, that’s all for today.  If you need me I’ll be listening to Mastodon.  More tomorrow…

Hade hoppats på att den här helgen skulle blivit riktigt rolig med födelsedagskalas och halloweenparty i Alinge. Istället sitter jag här vi köksbordet med huvudvärk, snorig näsa och småfryser lite. Hade hellre varit småbakis i en soffa i Alinge.

I fredags fyllde Cristel år och det var lite kalas här. Jag hade fixat veganfärspajer och en god chokladkaka som ni hittar recept till på Veganen. Det var lite folk här och mycket trevligt, och Cristel var nöjd med sina presenter. Av mig fick hon alla Volbeatplattor (så nu måste jag höra på dem konstant hela tiden), och lite andra grejer som jag inte orkar skriva…
Eftersom det var födelsedagskalas och fedag så blev det ju några öl också, tydligen funkar det inte på samma sätt i Stenungsund som det gör i Alinge där folk har med sig alkohol om de ska dricka något. Generös som man bjöd jag så klart de tomhänta stackarna eftersom jag hade för två dagar då det vara planerat för halloweenparty också. Det var ju bara att gå och köpa mer på bolaget dagen efter. Men så när sista ölen var uppdrucken var det någon som kom på att det är ju röd dag och därmed stänkt på bolaget. Vad säger man? Rutinerat! Jaja, det var ju bara att köra på sprit då för det har ju morsan alltid hemma…eller kolla med någon som kanske hade lite extra hemma.

Så när jag vaknade på lördagsmorgonen tänkte jag ge mig ut på öljakt, men det var innan jag insåg att min hals värkte, näsan rann och att jag förmodligen hade lite feber. Det blev inte bättre under dagen så det vara lika bra att ställa in kvällen festligheter och stanna hemma. Något jag fortfarande är rätt besviken över för jag såg verkligen fram emot att åka till Alinge och partaja lite. Istället stannade vi hemma och så en och en halv kass film och somnade tidigt.

Så nu sitter jag här vid köksbordet och i stället som Pantera har förtröstan i whiskey, röka och Black Sabbath. Tröstar jag mig med kaffe, chokladkaka och Lynyrd Skynyrd. Och det är inte elektriskt på nått djävla sätt med det är gôtt!

Oh, I dunno how to put this on…. All I know is that this suddenly happened to me.  She’s out of my reach now….
Sampai jam 2 dinihari ini gw belum bisa tidur. Persoalannya apa lagi klo bukan D…
Gw tiba-tiba inget lagu Tuesday’s Gone Metallica, yang gw pikir (walaupun gw nggak tau persis liriknya) menggambarkan nasib gw saat ini, Selasa kemarin.
Tadi sore, seperti biasanya, gw ke UKJ. Bukan untuk menghadiri rapat, walaupun emang ada rapat. Tujuan gw apalagi klo bukan buat ketemuan n pdkt ke si D. Sejak dating yang gagal kemarin gw gak mau nyerah, pokoknya gw harus dapetin si D bagaimanapun caranya. Salah satunya gw ngasih kado cd mp3 nightwish n hamc yg diburn sendiri. Aslinya sih mau ngasih buku sastra yg berbobot, tapi berhubung duit gw cekak niat itu terpaksa gw ubah.
Kita semua ngumpul di depan sekre UKJ sambil ngobrol ngalor ngidul gak karuan, diselingi canda di sana-sini. Gw tetap aj speechless, gak bisa nemuin topik yg asik bwt dibicarain ama D.
Di tengah jokes yang bertaburan temennya D (gw lupa namanya) bilang kalo si D udah ditembak cowok lain, ketua unit hoki. Deg! Jantung gw serasa berhenti berdetak. Selama beberapa saat gw shock. Sebisa mungkin gw sembunyikan ekspresi kecewa, tapi gw yang gak bisa nahan emosi langsung meremas kertas yang gw pegang.
Menit-menit selanjutnya adalah siksaan batin yang menyakitkan. D ada di depan gw, bisa gw pandang, tapi gak mungkin lagi jadi milik gw. Dengan menabahkan diri sekuat hati, gw cari konfirmasi dari D sendiri. Dan jawab si D, “Diterima donk, klo nggak namanya bukan ditembak,” katanya dengan santai. Sebilah tombak berkarat serasa ditusukkan ke ulu hati gw.
Gw tanya, “Kapan dia nembak u?”
“Kemarin pas aq ulang tahun.”
Kali ini serasa gergaji mesin ngegorok gw.
Ini berarti, sehari setelah kegagalan kencan gw, si ketua hoki jahanam itu dengan mudahnya mendapatkan hati D, sementara gw harus puas nonton konser super cheesy, duduk berdampingan dengan seorang pria rese’ alih-alih si D. Benar-benar menari di atas penderitaan gw. Dan ini juga berarti hadiah yang gw berikan dengan berdarah-darah saat jatah bulanan lagi mepet sementara atm belum bisa ditarik, jadi insignifikan, karena D udah jadi milik orang lain.
Rasanya gw pingin banget meneriakkan yel perang “BUNUH KETUA HOKI” dan menghajar si ketua hoki pake pedang kendo.
Gw kecolongan…. tapi apa boleh buat. Si ketua hoki udah kenal D sejak lama, dan gak mungkin bagi gw bwt nembak D duluan karena gw baru aja kenal dan belum akrab dengan si doi. Oh nasib….
Oh, biarlah. Gw udah cukup beruntung bisa kenal D, melihat parasnya, berbincang walau hanya sebatas teman. Walau tak mungkin mendapat kasih sayangnya. Tetap akan gw berikan unconditional love (cieee…) untuk dirinya.
Akhirnya gw cuma bisa berdoa semoga mereka berdua bahagia, saling menyayangi di saat senang maupun sedih. Eh, nggak ding, gw doain mereka bakal nggak cocok satu sama lain, dan cepetan putus… Amin….. Tapi klo mereka bener-bener cocok, gw berharap si ketua hoki itu orang baik-baik… rajin shalat… setia… dan nggak bakal menjerumuskan D.
Untuk D, gw akan selalu menyertaimu, menguntitmu, untuk melindungimu dari I (klo gw sempat). Karena, saat ini dirimu satu-satunya yang kucintai dengan perasaan seorang cowok ke lawan jenisnya.

gleich bei den ersten “5 songs” fiel mir die auswahl so schwer, dass es heute einen teil 1 und später einen teil 2 mit jeweils 5 songs geben wird.

und hier die 5 gründe für die auswahl:

1. hey, die beatles! was soll man dazu noch groß sagen. nein, im ernst: fast 4 minuten lang “na na na nanana nanana hey jude” mitsingen zu können und dabei paul gröhlen zu hören ist doch einfach unschlagbar .
2. zugegebenermaßen ne ganz persönliche sache, denn der song hat mich durch so manche lange masterarbeit-schreib-nacht begleitet. ansonsten: cooles intro. es dauert insgesamt mehr als anderthalb minuten, bis mal jemand mit dem singen anfängt. und bis zum ende wird es dann so richtig schön rockig.
3. lynyrd skynyrd haben ja so einige lange songs auf lager – v.a. auch in der kategorie “live-version”. daher konnte ich mich auch nicht wirklich zwischen freebird und tuesday’s gone entscheiden. für freebird spricht sicher das über 4 minuten lange krasse gitarren-solo am ende. die live-version, die ich früher immer bei vh-1 geschaut habe (aber heute leider nicht mehr finde, auch nicht bei youtube), hat sogar alles in allem 14 minuten (!) gedauert. bei tuesday’s gone gefällt mir vor allem das piano-solo nach 3 minuten.
4. michael jackson habe ich früher sehr gerne gehört. und obwohl er als mensch irgendwie immer komischer wird – seine songs sind einfach klasse. bei will you be there mag ich vor allem das intro mit dem gospel-chor. und ich muss dabei immer an free willy denken
5. keith green ist für mich der cat stevens der christlichen 70er-jahre-musikszene. leider ist er viel zu jung gestorben, denn er hat wirklich tolle musik gemacht. the prodigal son suite ist im prinzip die musikalische verarbeitung der biblischen geschichte des verlorenen sohns. wie keith das musikalisch umsetzt ist einfach erstaunlich. mir gefällt v.a. das piano und der wechsel im stil des songs in den letzten 2 1/2 minuten (als der sohn zu seinem eigenen erstaunen vom vater mit offenen armen empfangen wird).
