I have been assisting Ty Wagmar (@Wagmar) in his preparation for the World Tuff Mudder Competition N

I have been assisting Ty Wagmar (@Wagmar) in his preparation for the World Tuff Mudder Competition Novmber 18th in New Jersey. My job has been to figure out ways to simulate the physical demands required in the competition. My experience lies in explosive movements and short term bursts of energy with fast recovery (MMA, Boxing, Wrestling etc) so taking on this project has been an awesome learning experience.
This competition requires participants to make their way through a grueling obstacle course. The crazy part is that its a 24 hour competition so the individual who completes the most laps at the end of 24 hours wins. I did some research and found descriptions of last years obstacles which has helped give us an idea of the physical requirements that may be expected (see link below).
The hardest variable to simulate is the stress Ty will encounter over the 24 hour period. We can easily simulate 2 or 3 hours working out but this still leaves a huge gap in how he will respond after 10,15,20+ hours of work. To simulate this we have been gradually increasing our work volume and plan to experiment with low level sleep deprivation. It appears that military basic training theories would be the best approach to get the body used to working under these conditions. The real question we need to answer is what is the optimal work to rest ratio to keep Ty going strong for 24 hours.

Tuff Mudder, Warrior Dash, Spartan Race, The Civilian Military Combine, Etc., Etc! The rise of obsta

Tuff Mudder, Warrior Dash, Spartan Race, The Civilian Military Combine, Etc., Etc! The rise of obstacle coarse races is all the rage these days and why not? These races give thousands of people a chance to test their fitness, strength, endurance, conditioning, mental fortitude and are fun as hell! The subject matter of this post is to help all of you athletes, former athletes, weekend warriors and the average Joe better prepare for one of the more difficult obstacles, the climbing ropes!

For many people, the rope climbing obstacles are some of the hardest. They require adequate upper body and grip strength as well as, endurance. To assist you on your climb to the top I have written a strength training program that you can perform in your home or gym. The workout requires a climbing rope which you can purchase using the following link:

http://www.roguefitness.com/bodyweight-gymnastics/climbing-conditioning-ropes.php

The following is broken down into 3 workouts, each progressing in difficulty. Start with workout 1 and progress as your strength improves. This means when you can complete both exercises for the desired number of sets and reps in perfect technique!

Workout 1:

Exercise 1) Dual rope body row standing: 3 sets of 8-12 Reps. Rest 75 seconds between sets

Exercise 2) Standing Single Rope Climb: 3 sets of 8-12 Reps. Rest 75 seconds between sets

Workout 2:

Exercise 1) Lying Dual Rope Body Row: 3 sets of 8-12 Reps. Rest 75 seconds between sets

Exercise 2) Lying Knee Bent Rope Climb: 3 sets of 8-12 Reps. Rest 75 seconds between sets

Workout 3:

Any combination of the above workouts and finish with 1-3 rounds of climbs until failure

The video below demonstrates all of the exercise explained

So I have asked to do the tough mudder , I think my friends need help mental help ….. but after seeing this video its a real test they say its the toughest on the planet after watching the video I don.t doubt it . It also raises money for a great cause soldiers who have been wounded . Very intimidating not for the faint of heart or weak minded this is some never back down no matter the odds type of thing if you choose to sign up , mud , ice cold water , even electric shocking its gonna be one to remember . GOOD LUCK ! (note most of my friends still need mental help)

Tough Mudder events are hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. With the most innovative courses, half a million inspiring participants, and more than $2 million dollars raised for the Wounded Warrior Project, Tough Mudder is the premier adventure challenge series in the world.

Bored by running? Want a group event that gets your heart racing and the blood pumping? Look no furt

Bored by running? Want a group event that gets your heart racing and the blood pumping? Look no further than Tough Mudder. The ads for this have been hanging around on Facebook’s ads on my page for about a year, but it was only today I became intrigued. On one half it reminded me of our activity centre days- high ropes, canoeing, swimming and climbing all rolled into one. Then I noticed the nettle net and the ‘Turd’s nest’. The conclusion I drew was- this is no standard activity day!

12 miles of obstacles, this is no normal muddy race. Designed by the Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie this is an event that is all about team spirit and fun. You don’t go in to win, you go in with the mindset of fun. You can’t even compete it solo- you need a team to haul you through.

And just what they haul you through as well!

Greased up monkey bars. Icy rivers. Steep, imposing walls. Hay bales. A net of nettles for you to crawl belly through.
And more. Clue- it involves ‘waste matter’. I’ll spare the rest for all you lunch eaters reading.
If you want to compete it’s about £80 a ticket or you can compete for charity (Help For Heroes is their charity of choice.)

You can also watch for £10, prebooked, or volunteer.

So, who’s in for Tough Mudder 2012? If you want to compete and need a warm up before the day – try a climbing course, activity day or get used to icy water in the water rapids at www.goactivities.co.uk !

Thank you Michele for sending this to me. You want to talk about functional fitness, this is it! Down and dirty style, designed by the British Special Forces. This 7 mile race is not your average trail run. It is a mix of woods/trail running, barbwire crawling, running through fire, seat of your pants 2 and 1/2 hour ride of your life. This race is October 9th, 2010 in Bear Valley, CA. If this peaks your interest early bird discount sign up is available. I hear Jo as a 15 passenger van that would make for a great ROAD TRIP! And what perfect way to train for it then coming to FallOut CrossFit! A portion of the entry fee is being donated to the Wounded Warrior Project, and charity that we will donate too in, our 2nd Annual, upcoming Fight Gone Bad V. For event detail visit Tuff Mudder.com trail map can be found by clicking here.
