The Ouzelum or Oozlum bird is a legendary creature found in Australian and British folk tales and legends. Some versions have it that when startled the bird will take off and fly around in ever-decreasing circles until it manages to fly up itself, disappearing completely, which adds to its rarity. Other sources state that the bird flies backwards so that it can admire its own beautiful tail feathers, or because while it does not know where it is going, it likes to know where it has been.

This talk of a bird going backwards when startled reminds me of two differenet domestic breeds of pigeons mainly the parlor tumbler who when scared will flip backwards as in the video below. Another is the Birmingham roller who flips back in the air. Is the Oozlum bird a pigeon? The parlor tumbler or parlor roller originated in Scotland and the United States around 1850 or earlier well the birmingham roller who flips while it flies was orginated in England and whose time of origin is unknown. Whose to say what the Oozlum bird is, but I believe it is a parlor roller or birmingham roller, or even one of the ancestors of these domestic breeds after all it had to come from somewhere. So to the ancestor of parlor roller and the birmingham roller the Oozlum.

So far it’s been great. I originally wanted the Stainless Steel one, but decided to try out this version first because of price and availability. At the date of my purchase this item was included in Amazon’s 4-for-3 Promo, which made it a deal.

It came with a small care & use slip inside the mug and I made sure to read it all. I’ve been taking my coffee to work in it for 5 days now and so far I’ve had hot coffee and no spills. I even knocked it off my desk yesterday and not a drop leaked. The button you push to open and drink is somewhat firm, but hasn’t been a problem. It states that it keeps coffee hot/warm for 1 hour and it does. I usually rinse mine out with hot water before filling to heat it up and I think that helps. I haven’t tried it out with cold drinks because I didn’t buy it with that intention. I like the style of the cup and it fits into all my drink holders. I’ll give this a couple more weeks of use and if all is still positive I’ll probably upgrade to the Contigo Double Wall Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler and keep this as a back-up.

I had previously owned the aluminum tumbler, which was terrific! It kept beverages hot for 4 hours and cold for 12 hours! The plastic tumbler did not keep liquids hot for more then 30-45min. I ordered in error thinking I was getting the aluminum tumbler.

It looks nice and it does prevent some spilling, but it has a couple of flaws. If you take a sip and then release the auto-seal button before you level it upright, the leftover coffee on the lid could splash as your lips smacked off the lid. The inside of the lid is also poorly designed with a lot of hard to reach corners and openings making it very hard to clean properly. I figure I would throw this mug away after 2-3 months to avoid drinking my fresh coffee with too much unwanted mineral/soap/old coffee deposits.

I bought several of the stainless 2 packs [...]. They are the favorite drink container in my household of 5. Each family member(3 teenagers, my husband and I) has claimed one for themselves and I have a hard time finding one to use in the morning since they are used so frequently. No spills to worry about. We have 4 computers and worry about spills!! The only problem I have is that I cannot find anymore of the 2 packs at the great price [...]!! I would buy more!

So last week I was telling you all about just how shitty my scooter has been lately. Well, I managed to find an English speaking mechanic. Nice to be able to converse with the guy that is fixing your bike up. I was gettting a bit tired of just having to have faith in the guy I was using. This was a long time coming.

So the new guy has a look at the thing, and takes it for a test-drive. He comes back and I ask him the news.
So. The rattles. The first rattle is the Disc-brake on the front wheel. There is something loose in there. Would I like to fix it? YES PLEASE.
The second rattle is the exhaust heat shield. It is loose and rattling. Can be fixed, but needs a washer set that needs to be ordered. No biggie.
The back wheel is wearing unevenly because the allignment of the scooter is out. (Good Call PlasticRat). The chassis has been twisted, most likely as a result of an accident. He seemed quite surprised that I had noticed it… as it is apparently very slight. Well… not slight enough, right?
The lack of power in the engine is a result of an exceptionally worn out clutch and transmission.
Total cost to fix it all? Just shy of NT$ 10000. This is after I have already dropped NT$ 8500 on the thing. And it cost me NT$ 28000 in the beginning.

Meh. So…some decisions need to be made. I am not really happy to sell it on to some unsuspecting foreigner. If the tyre goes on the next guy and he dies or something… not good karma! Selling it to a dealer would appear to be the way forward. But that is going to get us virtually NOTHING for the bike.
Well, the wife and I are now thinking about buying a new bike… or maybe a car.

Anyways… that is that. So as of now, I am driving the bloody bike about like the tyres are made of glass. (Which let’s face it… they may as well be.)

Watched an AWESOME series this week. Called “Lost Room”. Very very good indeed. And we found another series called “Without a Trace” that we are enjoying very much at the moment. And the 7-11 has brought back the Guts bar… so life is basically perfect.

News for the week?
Well… I am still embracing my “No Negativity” rule. I am just not dwelling on negative shit that comes my way, and I am certainly no longer seeking it out. If you are in any way confused by the philosophy, and some people appear to be…. perhaps this will better explain.

This week I found a really interesting piece. About a car that I had never heard of… and that seems pretty damned amazing. The Tucker. Awesome eh?

OMG. It’s 0626h and I think I slept for barely 3 hours but I’m wide awake now thanks to us missing the train stop. Yes, I’m on my way to Fussen to visit the ‘Cinderella’ castles before heading off to Munich for Oktoberfest tomorrow.

So we were happily sleeping on the train ‘cos it’s the only train out of 5 that is more than an hour which we can sleep for a comfortable amount of time. The guys woke up early but were doing random morning washups and didn’t want to wake me as they wanted me to sleep more. But alas, when we finally got off the train, it was the wrong stop! We panicked but thank God I asked someone and he was helpful enough to find us a next train going on the same route.

On the way out, we also saw Starbucks for the first time since Sweden. Sweden has no Starbucks at all. It’s strange because Swedish people LOVE coffee. We have this thing called ‘Fika’ in which you have coffee and some pastry for 123123 times in the day. It’s crazy, I know, but these Swedish people love it. Anyway, back to Starbucks. We happily ran to get our coffee and after all the Starbucks tumbler shopping, we realised we have two minutes before the train departs. We were next to platform 5 and the platform we were supposed to be at was 30. that’s like 25 tracks and platforms apart. OMFG. Masa carried my luggage for me and the guys did some 600m(?) sprint while I laughed and tried to run. I probably only ran a hundred metres. LOL. But it was really funny. And yeah, we caught the train!

TK told me before I went for exchange that a trip is not a trip without misadventures. No matter how you plan for everything to be perfect, things will definitely go wrong at some point of time. And it’s because of these little mistakes that add colors to a trip and etch memories of the trip deep in our hearts.

Normally, I have no interest in expensive watches because I only really want my watch to tell time. Right now I’m wearing a simple digital watch from Timex, it does what I need it to do and a little more, having three alarms and such. However, Tokyoflash greatly changed my perspective. The watches from Tokyoflash are very well-designed and look great, but they most definitely are not conventional. They incorporate designs into their timepieces to create truly unique watches. Each has its own unique way of telling the time and most of them are quite attractively done.
