Alles Liebe,

Philipp

I mentioned at the beginning of the semester that we were tumblr blogging our classes, the Serious G

I mentioned at the beginning of the semester that we were tumblr blogging our classes, the Serious Gaming seminar, 39B and Archaeology and the Media: Film, 136i. Tumblr is a simplified, speed-blogging service that provides a place to “tumble” your thoughts. I appreciate it as a sort of visual short-hand while I’m doing research–I tend to tumble what I’m reading about or thinking about, select quotes and photographs. It makes a nice, general record of your research trajectory. I like that it is an explicit acknowledgement of the marginalia created during the construction of knowledge. Anyway, so we decided to try it out for our classes, with mixed results.

http://136i.tumblr.com

It was great for 136i. The Archaeology and the Media classes tend to be structured discussion sessions, where a lot of examples of movies, television, online video, and other forms of media come up in class. The tumblr blog was a way to track class discussion in a non-intrusive way. It helped that there were two of us–me and Ruth–so one of us could take over while the other typed. If I held the seminar by myself, I might arrange for round-robin of responsibility among the students for tumbling class discussions. Though I have a hard time on occasion with the “multi-tasking” that goes on during class. Having folks referencing online sources and their own previously typed notes can be handy, but I’ve had to ask for “laptops down” many times this semester.

In any case, I found Tumblr to be not only a great “rapid-repository” for references during class, but also appended clips from movies discussed in the readings for students to reference before class. Most of the students had never seen such movies as Double Indemnity and Stagecoach. I was also able to provide a small collection of important links to address issues such as copyright, and finding creative commons-licensed music for their movies. I even threw in a few “fun” links to archaeology videos that circulate among academics, but aren’t often seen by students.

http://39b.tumblr.com/

The Serious Games and Virtual Worlds for Archaeology Tumblr blog didn’t fare quite as well. Perhaps it was because so much of the class was oriented toward trying to manage awkward CAD systems in Second Life, or that the readings were primarily about Catalhoyuk or other history games. The students also were not quite as engaged, and did not offer as many examples from their own experience for us to reference on the blog. This class was also completely new, and we had to wrangle material about a subject that is not a fully formed field of inquiry quite yet.

In any case, I could recommend using tumblr for both smaller seminar settings, and for larger classes when there is a TA available to follow the discussion with links to examples and salient points. We are not quite to full immersion–live blogging a lecture so that a powerpoint isn’t necessary, but we’re getting closer. I’m guessing that in the next decade we’ll have it being done for us–word clouds, reference images, and networks of meaning appearing behind us as we lecture. That might actually get the attention of the students…for a second or two.

If you’ve contacted me about reviews and haven’t heard anything from me in a while I’m sorry, I’ve been tired and busy and sleep deprived, so some stuff takes a backseat compared to academics, real work, stuff like that. I’ve also been trying to teach myself how to be all web-savvy and use Tumblr, which I don’t feel like sharing, though you could probably find if you looked hard enough. I can say though that I recently saw a page from The Underground from Mike and it’s exciting to seem your ideas fully drawn out like that.

Anyway, I’ll be ignoring the Internet this holiday weekend. Have fun, don’t kill yourselves driving to visit relatives you can’t stand tomorrow.

I was scouring through my room, looking for valuable pieces to add to my portfolio for the Mock Interview tomorrow. And this old piece of work caught my eye. It was a feature article I did in the past for the Feature Writing module.

The article I wrote talked about how Mobile phone technology was developing at such a rapid pace (In fact all digital technologies to be precise), that some if not most, of the older generation was losing touch with it.

This made me reflect for quite a bit. Myself, a young man, already having some difficulties with some of the latest tech of today - Twitter, Tumblr etc. What is going to happen to me when I grow old and grey? At the rate things are going, I am probably to end up in the same predicament as my interviewee.

I always thought and prided myself on being a hip, trendy parent to my kids in the future. But I fear my offspring and the future generation would perceive me the same way I did to my kin – dour, passe and out of touch.

C’est La Vie – Such is Life.

Attached below is the essay I did for anyone who is interested.

Today’s mobile technology – Alien or Earthly?

By: Darren Nathaniel Cheong

Carl Zeiss™, Bluetooth™, MMS, Symbian anyone? These are already common mobile phone terms that might already sound unrecognisable to the youths and working adults of today. So what about the baby boomers of society?

Confusing, frustrating are the common refrains being heard. Especially so forPoh Ah Peng, a store keeper with 2 children, who has been using the technology for years.

“All the latest new-fangled mobile phones’ functions and their jargons are a bane to old timers like us,” declares Poh, a 52 year baby boomer. “What ever happened to the good old days when all a mobile phone did was to call, send and receive messages?”

Indeed the mobile phones of this era has come a long way since the pioneering batch, referred to as First Generation or 1G, were introduced to the public market in 1983 by the Motorola Company.

Now we are currently at the age of 3.5G. The de-facto standard for mobile technology today. But is it a case of too much, too soon for the older generation?

“When I got my first mobile phone, it was just this plain old simple Nokia model,” Poh says as he tries to rummage through his cabinet to demonstrate his old model. “Now I have this Samsung phone with a camera in-built in it. And just a few years back cameras were these bulky objects with film in them!”

It seems like all the latest cellular devices, are like alien and foreign technology to the baby boomer generation, with an invisible barrier springing up with every new product coming into the market.

Sony Ericsson with their “Cyber-shot” Phones, LG with their tie ups with global fashion house Prada, and Nokia with their Carl Zeiss’s camera lenses – are classic examples that come to mind.

“You know what is worse than the mobile phones themselves?” continues Poh after he answers a quick call off his mobile phone. “The jargons people use to describe them.”

With terms like Bluetooth™ technology, Java and all the related jargon mobile companies are rattling off. It is little wonder that even the younger generations are too being overwhelmed by the rate of change.

“Last week my daughter came up to me and said she wants another phone,” groans Poh as he massaged his temples. “I asked why, and she said she can’t use her phone because it was too complicated already.”

Furthermore, there are studies that show that mobile phones emit radiation that causes cancer in the body. Does that further lessen the appeal of the technology in the eyes of the older generation?

“If the studies are proven, then definitely it would damage the technology in our eyes,” Poh replies. “Ultimately, we all want technology that is safe and beneficial to mankind and not cancer causing time bombs.”

Now, the question that begs to be answered is what can the mobile companies do to counter all this negative perceptions of the new technologies among the baby boomer generation today?

“Well the first thing to do is this,” says Poh as he points to a mobile phone commercial on the television set. “Revamp all those confusing ads running on television now.” He continues, “Most of them just showcase nice and stylish graphics but not explain the functions.”

“Secondly, maybe the mobile companies should include more information about the new technologies in their brochures and catalogues,” he adds with a fluster. “They shouldn’t expect everyone to be technology savvy especially the older folks.”

“Finally please stop the jargon,” he elaborates further. “Terms like Bluetooth™doesn’t explain anything, neither does Java and Symbian. Make the language easier to understand.”

With that, we asked Poh to describe the technology in three words.

“Beneficial, useful,” and then adding with a grin. “Complicated.”

You may have noticed that I have a dumb little side-blog over on Tumblr, called Film Noir Tagline. M

You may have noticed that I have a dumb little side-blog over on Tumblr, called Film Noir Tagline. Much of the time, it’s just pictures of pretty girls in pretty outfits, but I throw in some design porn, music, and assorted Internet ephemera I find funny or inspiring.

Much like my Twitter account, this whole Tumblr thing is taking its time to evolve. I promise you don’t want to see what I posted to Twitter before I started using it for wisecracks, puns and dick jokes. At the same time, I’m sure the current state of Film Noir Tagline will seem shabby to me once it finally decides what it wants to be when it grows up.

For now, though, I’m going to use it as another excuse to continue looking back on 2009. We’ll laugh, we’ll love, we’ll cry and maybe we’ll even learn something. Here are the 10 most liked/reblogged bits from my Tumblr this year:

#10: “At The Tweetup”

This was a recounting of a befuddling conversation I had with an otherwise very lovely search-engine marketing expert. She changed the subject to cheese shortly afterward, and everything was fine. I may respond to anything marketing-related with a vacant, watery stare, but goddamn, I love cheese.

#9: “Single Ladies Dance to MC Frontalot“

My pal MC Frontalot wrote a clever rap called Tongue-Clucking Grammarian, about punctuation, onomatopoeia, and other topics dear to my heart. Someone mashed it up with Beyonce’s Fosse-lized dance routine from Single Ladies to create what Kanye West would surely agree is one of the best videos of all time. Of all time.

#8: “His Heart Couldn’t Beat It“

This was either very timely or way too soon, depending on your perspective. Shortly after Michael Jackson’s death, I spotted this winning combination of horrifying pun and CSI-intro-meme. Looks like his heart … couldn’t Beat It.

#7: “Geek“

My friend Sean Bonner created this image as a commentary on the rise of geek as the new cool. I figured it worked pretty well as a meta-commentary (ick, I know!) on Tumblr in general: lots of Internet fame, not so much actual geekery.

#6: “How To Use Twitter for Marketing and PR”

http://www.howtousetwitterformarketingandpr.com/ basically sums up my feelings on the matter.

Everyone knows that the leading celebrities in social media are Facebook and Twitter. In the Nieman

Everyone knows that the leading celebrities in social media are Facebook and Twitter. In the Nieman’s Report article Social Media: The Ground Shifts it introduces Facebook Connect. This feature “allows any other Web site to log in users with their Facebook ID instead of a site-specific login. Beyond that, Facebook Connect allows other sites to shape users’ experiences through profile information, such as their list of Facebook friends.” Both Facebook and Twitter have done a great job with integrating other websites into their own. Facebook is taking over by being a hub where anything that you do online can be tied in with your account and reported to your friends. It reports the “news” for you by putting it in your network of friends’ newsfeed. As I was reading this article, I thought about how my trust for the internet has changed. Before, I would never ever put my real name online until I did for Facebook. I was also afraid that someone would do something with my name or find me. Call me crazy, but I was just being cautious, but now every one is because there is more trust online and everyone wants to be easily found.

Lately, I’ve noticed that many of my friends are using Tumblr. This site is more about micro-blogging. It’s easier for readers to see what you’re posting about instead of actually reading a lot of content. Tumblr makes it easy to distinguish the type of post it is like if it’s a photo, video, quote, conversation, etc. It also makes it easy to reblog or show where the content you share from other people. I like it because a lot of my friends post interesting inspirational things that I don’t usually see on other blogs. It’s a different blogging lifestyle. I have my own account but I’m really bad at keeping up with things.

Social media which allows your friends to basically know every move you make online is both a good and bad thing. On wired.com, an article Web Mashups Turn Citizens into Washington’s Newest Watchdogs talks about several sites that ”are increasingly giving ordinary citizens the ability to easily document the flow of special-interest money and how it influences the legislature.” To be honest, it was a little hard for me to grasp this article because I’m not a big political person but I know that sites like these will make it harder for future candidates to keep a clean slate. It adds more work for campaign staff to keep up with content about them.

Open-ended:

Will Facebook Connect overpower regular Facebook content?

Will seeing what your friends do on other sites annoy you?

Do you like the idea that Facebook acts like a hub or one stop site that connects others?

As I lie here in the dark of night having been captured by this thought, and now sending it out to t

As I lie here in the dark of night having been captured by this thought, and now sending it out to the world , I realise that every human being is important.

The advent of blogging, viral media and social networking affirms this more than ever before.
This has however altered the way daily life is lived.

Each event, function, concert, holiday cannot be simply experienced without being twittered, flickred or facebooked

It is all based upon the presumption that everyone in our world is looking out and cares for what we have to say, that we are perpetually on a stage.

Or the grim thought that at our death our history and eulogy is digitally written by our own hand.
The benefits of social media far outweigh the demerits.
However this microwave era, this period of bubblegum life will soon enough come to pass.
This is, to me, made clear in three key aspects in which it has affected our lives.

The first aspect is the lightness with which it comes;a serious message that was once carried in a weighty letter is posted in a microsecond and quickly buried in a mass of meaningless garbage.
This adds in the “cry-wolf” effect, where a serious message is taken lightly. I need not remind you what happened to the boy who cried wolf.

Do you not find it annoying, the multiple media we have to deal with? Today, an afternoon after a hard days work for the typical urban person means skype,email,i-pod,facebook,twitter,flicker,newspaper,tv,radio,sms,phone calls. All this outside direct person to person conversations.
You would think that we are now better at multitasking, but surveys show that persons raised in this media explosion have extremely short attention spans. They can hardly concentrate.

What hurts me most though, is the waning of pure peace and enjoyment of beauty. One no longer basks in a the orange basket of a sunset or sunrise, plunging and losing oneself in its beauty, without first whipping out a camera to “capture”the moment, not knowing the moment was lost once the plunge wasn’t taken, and the decision to be a cold observer behind mirrored steel was made. We will then tumblr it, tweet it, facebook it, stumble upon it, sms it and by the time we are done, it will be dark or high noon, the moment lost in time.

Instead of building addictive habits around our media,we should validate and qualify the importance of our use of the same, and thereafter, use them in moderation.
