Image : http://www.flickr.com

Would you get a commitment from him? Are you tired of waiting for your relationship to the next level? What does it take for a guy to be faithful to you and you alone? Commitment is often something that women want and are simply not safe to get it. They believe that obtaining one from a man is almost impossible to do. However, the truth is that you only need to show the man who has a commitment to you is better than to commit to you. Do this and youcircumvent resistance and secure a commitment from him.

You must first talk to him. You can not expect him to know how you feel, think, or need if you do not tell them. However, you need to make sure you do it in a way that is done, but not emotional. You should also make sure not to pressure him or give him a ultimatime. Instead, sit down to tell him how you feel and what you want. Do not cry, cry, get angry or upset. Then get up and go forward with yourlife.

Give him space. You must ensure you give him the space he needs to make the decision at hand. Remember that this is not an easy decision and it is one that is important. It is more difficult for him to do it is to you.

Be fun to be with. You need to show why he wants to be with you. Work on being a positive person who has a good time. You must also do things and go places that are fun so there is that element of excitement to your relationship.

Youalso need to have a life. Stay busy and active. Do not always be there waiting for him. Not only is it healthy, it also helps ensure that there is a reason he would commit to you. If you do not offer him a motive to commit, and if he gets everything he wants from you, without commitment there is no reason for him to make a commitment to you.

With these four things you can circumvent this resistance and achieve commitment. It will take time and youshould be patient, but if you can wait for him, he will finally there for you. This is the best way to cultivate a lasting relationship that is worth more.

The lunar playground is finally complete! At last a place that is as strange and awesome and demented as humanity has been constructed. The playground encompasses the entire moon. It is filled with tunnels, mirrors, puzzles, moving parts, and optical illusions. However, most amazing of all is the lunar slide. The lunar slide is a series of tubes, sort of like the internet, that go from the moon down to thousands of different locations on earth. It is an experience like no other.

For years, I have had the same recurring dream. It starts out with me crawling through a tunnel of rock. It is long, convoluted and tight to the point of claustrophobia in places, but I am determined to keep going. I don’t know what waits for me at the end, I only know I can’t go back – going forward is the only option now.

I wake from this dream feeling unsettled, as if I need to finish something. I never like the dream, but in an odd way, I often look forward to it because maybe the next time I’ll make it to the end of the tunnel, maybe I’ll find out what waits for me at the end.

I haven’t had the dream in a long time, until just recently, but I think I know why. I have ventured into the unknown. I have entered the world of publishing. For years, getting published has been my Holy Grail. That one thing I looked for above all else and now finally hold, at least virtually, in my hand. The experience has been almost surreal.

After years of doing nothing but writing and re-writing, offering my precious words up for sacrifice on workshops and to beta readers, and then more time spent writing query letters (a special hell all in itself); I almost became immune to rejection letters. It got to the point where I would scan to the first few words and then hit delete. We regret, I’m sorry, and the ever popular, I’m just not that enthusiastic about it, but maybe someone else will be, clogged my inbox on almost a daily basis. I once got a one word reply to a query- NO- short and to the point.

So, when I got the acceptance from my publisher, Lyrical Press, it almost didn’t register. It was that single E-mail that started me on my journey and much like my journey through the tunnel, I had no idea what waited for me on the other side, I only knew that things were put into motion and I had to find out what waited for me at the end.

The first thing I encountered was familiar—waiting. After months, sometimes years of waiting for replies from would-be agents, waiting was something I was used to. But this wait was not long. I was introduced to my editor. This is probably one of the most important relationships you will ever foster. Much like a marriage, it is vital that the author and editor are simpatico. Unlike any critter, or beta reader, your editor will look at your work under a microscope. Every word, every phrase, every mark better be perfect. Things you never thought of will be brought to your attention. Mistakes you thought you corrected will make you hit your forehead and say Doh!

If you are really lucky, like I was, you will get an editor that not only knows her job, but tempers her corrections with praise and compliments. One that will let your own voice shine through. One that will not let you get lost in the whole process. (Thanks, Pamela!)

Treat your editor, oh, I don’t know, like a god maybe? Respect them and what they can do for you. They can make the great story you have already written, fantastic! My published book is far better than the one I submitted to Lyrical.

It has been quite the ride and it isn’t through yet. I am still crawling through the tunnel, trying to find out what waits for me on the other side. I still wake feeling unsettled, but I have managed to gain more ground than I ever did before. There might even be a small light shining at the end of it. I’ll let you know when I get there.

The colonies of cockroaches were disturbed when a group of us disappeared below the surface of Cape

The colonies of cockroaches were disturbed when a group of us disappeared below the surface of Cape Town to discover the tunnel in upper Oranjezicht below Platteklip on Table Mountain an area called Camissa, the place of sweet water, as Khoi herders once called the City Bowl.

At the start of the tunnel

We entered the storm water system through a manhole in upper Oranjezicht and climbed fugitive-like from a manhole within the grounds of the Castle of Good Hope two wet kilometres later. Despite the waivers that were signed, nervousness set in when it was explained that guides had numbered list of manholes we could use as emergency exist in the event of panic attacks.

Crouched in the concrete storm water pipe while waiting for the rest of the team to descend, boots already filled with water, the precariousness of our position hit home and anxiety threatened to end the excursion before it begin. But fear of later taunts trumped immediate anxiety and we set off, happily unprepared flashlight-wise, down the system. Armchair philosophy abounded as we made our way, crouching low and slipping, through racing waters, and losing my camera in the process.

About a third of the way down the mountain the subterranean scenery changed. We could now walk upright, and were surrounded no longer by a concrete structure but by a face brick, built canal. Stalactites started to make their appearance, as did the first cockroach, whose plentiful friends would only be encountered further down the line. There would be no rats; we were thankfully, and truthfully, assured. Throughout the walk, we silently thanked the designers of storm water system as the occasional pool of light and air found its way down into the dark.

The sounds of the dense city traffic several metres overhead was audible, but occasionally team leader Dwain Esterhuizen of FO8 would relay our real-world orientation. That’s how we knew when we were under the Gardens shopping centre, or Harrington Street, or Roeland Street. Rumour had it that the manhole covers in Roeland Street outside Parliament had been welded shut. Some said it was done for former US president Bill Clinton’s visit; someone else reckoned it had been the doing of apartheid head of state P W Botha.

Looking up at manhole in Roeland Street

Not much further down the line, things started getting a bit smelly, and old. We entered the third and last leg of the journey, where the same stone that had been used to build the castle replaced the face brick. The tunnel changed shape from its earlier perfect roundness to a more squished oval shape, built by hand during the earliest days of the Cape Colony. History enveloped the awed walkers, whose heads had been gently brushed by cobwebs throughout.

At manhole number 14, sunlight through the end of the tunnel beckoned. Clambering clumsily from the manhole on the grass side of the castle watched by several soldiers, we took a while for the disorientation to register the cars racing down Darling Street. There in the distance was Table Mountain, from were we had earlier surveyed the route we would travel. Reality slowly returned, and we were back in the present

Last week we finally managed to get up onto the Highline Park in NYC. Granted the first time we tried to go it was the very first day and there were massive lines – for a park! Seocnd time lucky. The sunset was amazing that evening but the park has a few other very cool features. This tunnel actually had an art installation inside it. A set of windows had been re-paned with glass that matched a single image per pane from 700 photos of the Hudson River taken over the course of one day. The installation is entitled “The River That Flows Both Ways” by Spencer Finch. The tunnel itself is a semi-enclosed loading dock running through the Chelsea Market Building and reminded me a bit of the starfighter launch tunnels in Battlestar Galatica. I shot this as wide open as I could go to create a dreamy feel as the sun was almost completely set.

Otford Rail Tunnel – Closed

The Otford Tunnel IS the grand daddy of all the six disused tunnels in the Helensburgh and surrounds area. None of the other five existing tunnels have more written about them than the Otford Tunnel. Technically it is the No.7 tunnel on the Illawarra line, measuring a whooping 1550m in length, more than double the length of any of the other five tunnels. The tunnel is dead straight right up until the Stanwell Park end where there is a short curve.

In the 70’s, my aunty would often look after me when I was quite young. She owned a house in Station Rd, Otford and I remember vividly hearing the trains roar by and tractors moving around in the approach of the northern portal of Otford Tunnel, then a busy mushroom farm. I clearly remember the smell of mushroom compost and used to watch the tractor turn the compost to see masses of steam rising from it. In the late 70’s my aunty met with one of the workers from the mushroom farm and a romance blossomed. He lived in the house which is located on the northern side of the school boundry next to the field, and left of the entrance road to the then mushroom farm.

Some time had passed and I remembered one afternoon going down to the mushroom farm with my cousin who was of similar age to me. We went into the northern portal of Otford Tunnel on the back of a tractor with my uncle, and goofed around in there while my newly related uncle did his job of farming mushrooms. I remember the smell of mushroom compost more than anything as the scent would emanate through the air and bathe the whole of Otford with its stench. I also remember many old wooden box crates piled on top of each other. They looked old, as the wood was that grey, weather beaten colour. The tractor used in the tunnel had really flat tyres and to my amazement and shock, I watched my cousin place his foot under the back tyre of the tractor. The expression on my face must have been of horror as my cousin just laughed at me. He said “try it”…”it doesn’t hurt”. Cautiously I did and I immediately wanted to pull away but kept my foot in the path of the tractor tyre. The tyre is coming closer and closer, I start to get nervous and it goes over my foot. A mass of pressure now starts to weigh on my foot but its soon over. “I did it” I yelled. I think we did it another 5 times after that. I have no idea what my uncle was thinking letting two children place their feet under a tractor tyre, but as I recall he didn’t say anything.
Years later I showed my Father a photo of the strange prawn looking tractor that has been discarded and abandoned in the Otford Tunnel. He told me that he remembers when it was in use, and that my uncle and his work mate used to fool around with that piece of machinery. I can’t remember it however… faint and distant are most of my memories of the Mushroom Farm, except the ones I have shared.

Another time I remember, was being woken very early and it was dark. (when you’re a very small child dark is sleep time). In thinking back, it must have been around 2-3am, and my uncle had a delivery of mushrooms to the Sydney Markets. The trip to the Markets was long and I think I must have slept most of the way as I can’t recall much other than a long drive in the dark. Upon arriving I remember the truck driving into a HUGE warehouse at night where there was loads of space and few people. I don’t remember much after that as I think I must have fallen asleep. A vivid memory it is and one that is etched into my mind. I must have been no more that 5 or 6 years old at the time.

A few years after this my aunty, uncle and two cousins packed up their belongings and moved north. Both houses are still intact and standing in Station Road, Otford today. Their appearance has changed but they are still there. All access to the northern end of Otford Tunnel is completely blocked. A couple of houses have been built near and on the driveway leading down to the northern end of Otford Tunnel, and the area outside of the tunnel where the mushroom production existed is completely overgrown with weeds and lantana.

Otford itself has a rich history and in the early days, grazing and farmlands in the valleys was common right up through to Lilyvale and beyond. The other areas in Otford were to be prized for their inhabitants of some of the best cedars in Australia supporting several mills at the time. A popular well known family in Otford around the 1860’s were the Gardiner’s who’s offspring included six sons and three daughters. Their property consisted of goats for milk, grapes for wine and the training of horses.

In the 1880’s the government decided that a rail link from Sydney to the Illawarra was needed as farming and mining warranted it. Gangers moved in the area starting at Westmacot (Waterfall) then Cawley and Camp Creek (Helensburgh) in 1884. By 1889 the 1st Helensburgh Railway Station opened sending its first train off to Sydney the following year. By 1885 the line had reached Otford and the gangers set up their camps to work on an engineering feat, the Otford Tunnel. During this time the township had the nickname of ‘Little Italy’ as most of the gangers on the tunnels construction were Italians. The rock removed to create the tunnel was an astounding 49,000+ cubic meters and the gangers would work in shifts to complete the tunnel. Five million bricks were made and used in the tunnels construction.

Soon after its construction, the Otford Tunnel became problematic with traffic as more and heavier trains started to use the line. Many trains would have to roll back to Stanwell Park station after stalling or having both travelers and engine crew of the trains, choked and asphyxiated in the tunnel. The engine crews only option was to shut off the engine, engage the brakes and roll back to Stanwell Park. Engine crew would split the carriages and make several trips up to Waterfall then reattach the full load and continue on. Many a story has been circulated by passengers and crew recounting stories of their torture through the Otford Tunnel. Although a tablet system* was introduced making the passage between Stanwell Park and Otford safe, the massive 1 in 40 grade made it very steep and difficult for heavy steam trains heading north.
*Only one train was allowed on the section at a time making it safe. The driver would pick up the tablet from Stanwell Park Station and head to Otford Station. Trains behind him could not leave Stanwell Park until the first driver had relinquished the tablet at Otford. This would be relayed to Stanwell Park that the train had successfully passed through the tunnel and the next train could continue.

In 1891 the powers that be decided to cut a ventilation shaft into the roof of the tunnel to aid in clearer and cleaner air. This was done approximately halfway into the tunnel at a depth of approximately 60m deep with the main vent shaft being 2m wide which expanded into the top of the tunnels roof forming a pretty impressive cone. This worked for a certain period of time but the problems of soot and smoke continued as time went by. Larger trains and more of them with greater loads compounded the problem. Other methods were needed to remedy this problem.

As the years went by, suggestions at the time (early 1900’s) consisted of a rope or cable to haul the trains through the tunnel, electrifying the line between Stanwell Park and Waterfall with a third rail being laid in the Otford Tunnel to provide the electrification as the roof had not enough clearance. Ideas that never came to be as plans for the deviation were in discussions and by 1908 the deviation was being re-surveyed to give a 1 in 80 grade. By 1909 the powers that be attempted another way to overcome the severe problems of soot and smoke. The installation of a massive blower system was initiated with a false portal being installed at the front of the original portal at the northern end. An engine room was constructed just outside the northern portal housing a massive gas engine, (later replaced with a steam engine). This would blow air through the tunnel south along the roof and walls clearing the tunnel of fumes and smoke in minutes. This remained in operation until the remaining section of the deviation works were completed in 1920. There was a delay in the completion of the deviation between Otford and Coal Cliff due to the war, and full operations on the new deviation didn’t swing into action til October 1920. The blower fan was later purchased by the Lithgow Mine in 1923 and was overhauled and converted into an exhaust fan at the mine.

After the Otford Tunnel was decommissioned on October the Tenth 1920, it became a nice walk for pedestrians as a shortcut between Stanwell Park and Otford. My favourite story of the Otford Tunnel revolves around the rectangular concrete brace holding up part of the tunnel just inside the southern end. Fears of a Japanese invasion had the government at the time securing all beaches around Sydney. Upon a successful invasion, the government had plans in place to prevent making the spoils of war easy. A plan was devised to blow up all bridges up and down the coast with the Sydney Harbour Bridge being the one exception. A ’scorched earth policy’ was also hatched and the Military ordered a test explosion which involved blowing up the Otford Tunnel to prevent intrusion of an advancing hostile enemy. The army exploded a demolition charge in the roof 30-odd metres in the southern end of the Otford Tunnel completely blocking access in 1942.

Years passed and water had banked up behind the fallen earth creating a dam. Hardly anyone could walk right through after the tunnel was blown in, although there are stories of some people being able to crawl through a small opening in the earthen heap, emerging at the Stanwell Park end during times of drought when not much water was present in the tunnel. During the early 60’s the mushroom farmers leased the tunnel to cultivate mushrooms. Sometime in the 70’s the mushroom farmers cleared the fallen debris from the explosion and erected a rectangular concrete brace to allow passage once again. By the late 80’s the mushroom cultivators had vanished and the land was leased to another company which ended up not allowing anyone to enter the area. During the late 80’s early 90’s several attempts by State Rail to restrict access to the tunnel had been implemented and shortly after vandalised and failed.

In 1999 the State Rail Authority deemed the tunnel unsafe due to erosion and past human actions. In 2000-2001 the Sydney Water Corporation made plans to have a sewerage pipe routed through the tunnel to link Stanwell Park to the sewerage system. Presentations were made to the Heritage Council who were advised of several other proposals but had considerable costs involved. The proposal were:

a pipeline laid partly following Lawrence Hargrave Drive with two pumping stations required in restricted areas;

a new tunnel to the cost of $8 million;

construct a pipeline over Bald Hill with similarities to the 1st proposal with greater environmental impact.

The cost to use the disused Otford Tunnel was quoted in section 60 of their application as being in the range of $500,000.00 to $1,000,000.00. After consideration by the members of the Heritage Council the members agreed that the presentation by Sydney Water to have been poor and lacking in detail. After much debate and working out of finer details, the council approved the application with several conditions.

the pipe should be fixed to wall with non-ferrous fixings, preferably into the joints, and otherwise conform to Recommendation 1 of the Heritage Impact Statement (HIS);

further consideration be given to reducing the visual impact of the pipe;

the pipe should be buried at the south portal to conform to recommendation 4 of the HIS. The pipe is to be buried as far as possible in the tunnel without disturbing significant archaeology. The minimum length for the buried portion of the pipe within the tunnel, from the portal is 20 metres;

that the location of the SPS4 pumping station conform to recommendation 6 of the HIS, but the precise location, elevations, construction details and details of any associated equipment be subject to approval by the Director of the Heritage Office. The detailed plans are to include the relationship of the pumping stations and associated equipment to the curtilage boundary of the item and to significant archaeology like the track bed;

the pipe should remain buried from the south portal to SPS 4 pumping station and beyond it as in recommendations 5 and 7of the HIS;

the nominated excavation director must be present to monitor any excavation works and to record any archaeological features that are located. Significant relics should not be removed and should be retained in situ. The pipeline is to be diverted around relics if found;

the works will be supervised on site by a consultant/s experienced in the conservation of similar heritage items;

the repair works required to the tunnel, to enable the installation of the pipe, must be carried out prior to or in parallel with these works. The repair works will require a separate section 60 application where they are in excess of the Standard Exemptions. These repair works must include items 10, 12 & 15 of the Recommendations of the HIS described by Edward Higginbotham & Associates;

a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) should be prepared and endorsed by the Heritage Council prior to the repair works being carried out to inform the future management and interpretation of the heritage item. The CMP should include consideration for limited public access to the tunnel;

a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) should be prepared and endorsed by the Heritage Council prior to the repair works being carried out to inform the future management and interpretation of the heritage item.
a photographic archival record shall be prepared including black and white prints and colour slides prior to the commencement of works. Copies are to be lodged with Wollongong Council and the NSW Heritage Office prior to the commencement of works;

a photographic archival record as described above shall be prepared of any significant fabric uncovered during the course of the works. Copies are to be lodged as described in i);

a photographic archival record as described above shall be prepared at the completion of the work. Copies are to be lodged as described above;

a Heritage Agreement must be signed by Sydney Water (as applicant for the work), the State Rail Authority (as owner of the heritage item) and the Minister for Urban Affairs and Planning to cover the conservation, adaptive re-use and maintenance of the heritage item;

the Heritage Council notes that as the proposal has the potential to improve visitor access to the tunnel a strategy that will facilitate safe public access and interpretation of the tunnel will be prepared to the satisfaction of the Heritage Council.

The last point has interesting implications from a rail and historic enthusiast point of view. I look forward to seeing what comes of it if anything. I remember reading a comment posted online from a surveyor who had passaged through the tunnel recently to survey it for the Water Board. I don’t think much has become of the proposal because as of October 2009, nothing has disturbed the growth of lantana and other weeds encroaching on the northern portal entrance of the Otford Tunnel, let alone the presence of a sewerage pipe. Nothing is in the tunnel except the remains of the mushroom cultivators machinery at both the entrance at the northern end, and a piece of machinery in the middle near the ventilation shaft.

Accessing the northern end of the Otford Tunnel is almost impossible if you don’t know how to access it. Access through the old driveway is now block as mentioned before, and western access is almost impossible. Cutting through the school is a commonly used access route but is fraught with danger such as lantana thick as aerosol cans and stinging nettle, not to mention the alignment floor is now a nice water reservoir. The false portal is still present although the whole portal can barely be seen because of weed infestation. Upon entry, you are immediately greeted with piles of rubbish abandoned by the mushroom farmer. Once passed, the floor of the tunnel is in very bad shape with areas completely washed away exposing the original 3 brick high water culvert which runs the entire length of the tunnel. Black walls are still present with the occasional chalk graffiti on the walls and some modern rubbish carelessly discarded on the tunnel floor. (nothing compared to the mess left behind by the mushroom cultivators). The tunnels length is astounding and just goes on and on, dead straight till the light at the northern end is a small speck. The tunnel must of been hell to travel on via a steam train. Towards the bend and end of the tunnel, the roof dramatically appears closer to you as the amount of erosion and earth run off has build up the area around the southern end. So much has washed down that the first manhole in from the southern end just pass the concrete brace, is at knee height. Much graffiti and vandalism has occurred at the Stanwell Park end including the damage and removal of four layers of bricks on the left side of the portal which lined the tunnel and entrance.

The Otford Tunnel is truly a magnificent feat of engineering and hard work. The work involved just boggles ones mind when you consider man power made the bore and lined it with an artwork of bricks. Hats off to the gangers. Well done, even though the tunnel had a relatively short life of 32 years.

Otford Tunnel, 121 years old and still there.

Opened: 3 October 1888

Closed: 10 October 1920

The Otford Tunnel is listed on the State Heritage Register as item number 1219.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the occupational disease of the 21st century. It involves numbness, weakness or pain in the wrist and hand and is caused by pressure on the nerve entering the wrist.

Traditionally it has been treated by wearing a splint, taking anti inflammatory drugs or with surgery, all having limited success.

Spinal misalignments are often found in the lower necks of patients suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. Nerve compression in the neck can block the flow of nutrients to nerves in the arm, shoulder and hand, making them susceptible to injury. Chiropractic gently restores proper nerve flow from the neck to the hand correcting the cause of the problem.

I welcome you to my mind.

I have tightly shut both doors leading to it, locking each door thrice. No one can find us here, so you may relax. Let me show you around…

As you can see, there is nothing much here—just a dimly lit space. No high voltage stadium lights as you might have found in Einstein’s mind—just a few flickers of light here and there. The walls used to be painted bright red, but turned grey gradually. The large bed you see over there—that’s where I spend most of my time. It’s very messy and strewn over with dreams. Sometimes the dreams take so much space I have to sleep on the floor…

You hear that voice? It’s coming from that tape recorder over there. It never stops. The voice keeps talking, sometimes there are more than one. They drive me crazy…

This, here, is the largest bookshelf in the world, but as you can see, there are no books in it. I plan to fill it up with hard bounds from all over the world. That rack over there in the corner is full of DVDs. Some of the best horror flicks ever. I am the lead actress in all of them…

Do you see that empty photoframe? It contains the picture of the person I love…

Look at this! This is my most favourite doll from my childhood. But someone stole her clothes and painted her face black…

Hey! Watch out! You almost stepped on this caterpillar on the floor. It’s been here for as long as I can remember. I’m hoping it would turn into a butterfly and fly away, but it’s taking too long…

I don’t know if you can see it from here, but there is a tunnel at that dark corner. The tunnel seems to be very deep, but I am too scared to explore it, so I just leave it alone…

And here is the grandest mirror of all times, but it doesn’t work properly. When I stand before it, I only see the background behind me, but no me! It’s as if I am invisible, or as if I don’t exist…

Knock! Knock!

Oh! No! They found us! We have to get out of here right now! I hope you will come see me here some other time! Bye!

Author’s Short Biography:

Steven Nedelton began writing short stories in his teens. He wrote his first novel, ‘Fear Factor’, in the late 90s. ‘Crossroads’ is his new, published, novel. ‘The Raven Affair’, also under contract with Asylett Press, is scheduled to be released by the end of 2009. He is presently working on his fourth novel, ‘Tunnel’, and finishing ‘Fear Factor’.

He lived for several years in Paris, France and London, England and is able to draw from his experiences living abroad to add realistic description of these locales and characters in his novels.

Steven holds a MSME from the PIB (PINY)/NYC and was a P.E. in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He has Roman ancestry like Italians.

Headline: Crossroads by Steven Nedelton

“Four guards and a large Siberian dog surround him. The chase car is still flashing red. A Mongol with a flat yellow face and shovel-like incisors is holding his passport and visa. The guard’s Russian is hard to understand; his English is impossible. “My car stalled, I’m a tourist,” he is explaining in his bad Russian to the Mongol. The guard laughs, shows off his incisors, then pokes him in the chest with his gloved forefinger. “You play poker. You, you–capitalist spy,” he says in his best English.”

“My dear, dear, friend,” Sokolov started his missive, and continued with…I am sure that by the time you read my letter you will have already had a few friendly dinners with our mutual acquaintance, Burly. I know he likes to talk a lot and I apologize for his often crude manners. But let us leave him the way he is. We cannot change people, their habits. Both of us know that well. And quite often we have to forgive them their little shortcomings. So, back to the business, as the Americans say.

I believe that you have already expressed an interest in my little venture, at least Burly indicated so in our recent telephone conversation. However, I have an additional little request for you. It may appear a bit odd, but please do try to understand my position. I am quite sure you know that I have never believed in seances and the like. Meaning, I can hardly believe in my own existence, never mind something ‘supernatural.’ Be it as it may, my old mother had several ‘experiences’—how should I word it—‘visual encounters,’ perhaps, with my dead brother. He died in the Great War. You cannot imagine how happy she felt, my poor, dear, old mother. So she asked me—can you imagine?—to get in contact with a reliable medium—I believe that is what they call such people—and have them try to get in touch with my dead brother to find out what he wanted to tell her. I am sure that in a big city like Paris there must be a few of those.

That is why I decided to contact you for help. The problem is, he or she would have to talk to my mother directly—she will not have it any other way—and tell her the details…”

Crossroads Book Review

“Crossroads is an international spy thriller with an intriguing plot that twists and turns thus engaging the interest of the reader till the final page. It contains an array of interesting characters ranging from the bottom of the food chain like Mme Benoit, an excop turned killer for hire Hans Polf to the top Russian Special Operations boss Sergey Sokolov. In this spy game no one is spared, no one is indispensable. It’s how each character meets his/her end that makes the plot suspenseful and satisfying as a spy thriller. The plot flits back and forth, from the United States, to Russia and to France giving it an international flair. Steven Nedelton has a flair for details – a good example is how the fallen Volkov stalked Solkolov to have his revenge. Time and time again, Nedelton painstakingly builds up a scene before the violence erupted, giving the plot suspense and visual detail. He has a keen eye for details.

A good read for a lazy day at home.”

“Reminiscent of John Le Carre with a dash of Ian Flemming, Steven Nedelton’s Crossroads plunges us deep into the complicated and not yet thawed Cold War mindpower experimentations and its dubious dark characters that once inhabited that volatile underworld. Written with an uncanny knack for plot and time-shifting, this 21st century thriller also introduces us to 20 th century CIA Agent David Tallman, the main character who possesses depth, passion and, in the grand tradition of Hemingway at his best, more than his fair share of tragedy and wickedness. An unusually multi-layered and absorbing novel, Crossroads will be and should be read by thriller and spy novel enthusiasts all over the globe.” Reviewed by: Vincent Zandri – author of ‘As Catch Can’ and the forthcoming ‘Moonlight Falls’.

Readers’ Comments:

I thought there was plenty of punch in your writing. Looks like you’ve done lots of research to make it authentic. Well done. Do you like Robert Goddard? His early stuff is a great benchmark. Cheers, Leo

Thanksgiving is always a time where I find myself re-centering. It’s a time to truly be thankful for all the little things we often take for granted, like our families:

Okay, so maybe my week at The Atlantis wasn’t the “healthiest” week of my life. But, without a strong immune system and a stomach of steel, I wouldn’t have made it out alive! ;)

Sometimes, I find myself complaining about the silliest things. This is something I’ve been working hard to change about myself. I’ve been extremely blessed in my 21 years of life, and I need to acknowledge that more often. In May of next year, I’ll be graduating from college. Four years under my belt. Four of the hardest years of my life, nonetheless. Four years of struggles, triumphs, ups and downs. After what’s felt like an eternity, I’m finally seeing the light at the end of a really, really long tunnel.

Recently, I’ve been looking to the future. I am so anxious to get through college that sometimes I forget how scary the thought of entering the “real world” truly is. I have a good idea of where I’m headed next year – some of you may know already - but still, the thought starting this journey scares the crap out of me! Am I truly ready to flee across the country, far away from my family and friends, and begin a new life? I mean, I think I am. But, man, when the heck did I become a grown up?

Sometimes, I doubt myself. I doubt that I “have it in me” to achieve all of the big dreams I’ve made for myself. Silly, silly girl. My hard work and determination has gotten me some pretty incredible places and introduced me to some wonderful people. I must have faith that I’ll continue on this journey with no looking back. Fearless.

“And I, I took the road less traveled by. And that has made all the difference.”

Security systems for underground traffic facilities must respond rapidly and reliably while at the same time displaying the highest possible degree of immunity to interference or false alarms.

Accident in tunnels and underground traffic facilities can quickly develop into disasters unless the correct protective measures are taken immediately. The reasons for the high level of risk are increasing traffic densities, the transport of more goods and combustible materials, and the limited space available for rescue and intervention. Furthermore, a small fire in a tunnel tube can spread rapidly within a few minutes due to the influence of wind (draughts, slipstreams, ventilation and natural convection). The rapid spread of smoke and the enormous generation of heat are an immediate threat to life and are often underestimated.

Modern tunnels therefore should be monitored by a fire detection system that immediately identifies an incipient fire and automatically actuates the appropriate protective systems. The OTS 2000/4000 fire detection system locates the fire precisely to within 1.5 – 4 metres and automatically actuates the extinguishing, ventilation and intervention system at the actual site of the burning object. The system also provides informative data about the development and size of the fire and the direction in which it is moving.

These systems have been proven over several years, and their reliability has been repeatedly demonstrated by more than 1000 installations throughout the world. In co-operation with dominant partners in fire safety worldwide, OTS technology has been successfully installed for fire detection in hundreds of kilometres of road and rail tunnels and for numerous other applications.

As the pioneering force, LIOS Technology has established a new standard in modern fire detection.

NOEtec Schalwagen kurz vor dem ersten Einsatz. Deutschland-Premiere Die Umgehung der Kernstadt von N

NOEtec Schalwagen kurz vor dem ersten Einsatz.

Deutschland-Premiere

A few days ago I posted in the middle of the night how I was being kept awake by a mouse in the walls. Set out some traps, wait for it to come in and bang–catch a mouse. The traps are still sitting there. We don’t have a mouse. I think we have a chipmunk. The thing is driving me mad. Every night it does more damage. Every night I try to scare it away. Every night I get no closer to figuring out how to get rid of it.

There are plenty of ways to catch a chipmunk, some lethal, some more pacifistic. The problem is that I do not know where to set any trap at this point. It isn’t coming into the house yet, thank the mammalian goddesses, but I also can’t find where it is traveling in and out of the walls. I naively filled in one tunnel early in the invasion. It hasn’t touched that spot since. Now I can’t find any tunnel. The spot it seemed to have gotten into the house has offered no signs of animal travel lately. It has another route in and out.

Rat traps, Haveaheart traps, hot pepper, whatever, I am willing to try it at this point, but where to place any such device or deterrent? That is the question. My plan at this point is to get some traps and just set them out and about near where I thought it was getting in. Maybe I will get lucky. That will tomorrow’s task. Too late tonight. Maybe by filling in its tunnel it is trying to find a new way out by tunneling in the wall. I don’t know. If I set out traps and they offer nothing, maybe I will unclog the original tunnel and set the traps there.

In any case, this critter needs to go. And soon. Chipmunks are cute, but I am willing to resort to violence if necessary. I would prefer I find a way to simply get it out and keep it out, but that may prove fruitless. Stay tuned for more reports from the front lines.

Ses derniers livres sont : Israel and the Clash of Civilisations : Iraq, Iran and the Plan to Remake the Middle East (Pluto Press) et Disappearing Palestine : Israel’s Experiments in Human Despair (Zed Books).

Saïd, pour le mecanoblog
mecanopolis
