If you are looking for a European tourist destination, consider the Piedmont region of northern Ital

If you are looking for a European tourist destination, consider the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Depending on your interests, this beautiful area might be an ideal vacation spot. You can get classic Italian food, and wash it down with fine local wine. Some parts of Piedmont haven’t yet been discovered by tourists. This short article presents Turin, the capital and largest city of the Piedmont. A companion article presents the rest of the Piedmont region.

Piedmont means foot of the mountains, and that describes the area perfectly. Turin, in the center of Piedmont, is pretty well surrounded by hills and by mountains such as the Alps. The Piedmont climate is continental especially in the plains.

Turin’s population is slightly over nine hundred thousand. The 2006 Winter Olympics have put Turin on the tourist map. Turin, the center of Italy’s automobile manufacturing, is more than an industrial city.

This city was once a walled Roman military camp. The French House of Savoy ruled Piedmont for about five hundred years. Not surprisingly a lot of French influence remains. Turin was the first capital of the United Kingdom of Italy.

We begin our tour of Turin downtown. The Fifteenth Century St. John’s Cathedral chapel contained the famous Shroud of Turin. You can see a copy of this shroud near the Duomo’s altar. Other downtown churches include the Seventeenth Century San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence) and the twin baroque San Carlo and Santa Cristina Churches. Cross the Po River to see the Nineteenth Century Chiesa della Gran Madre di Dio and the Sixteenth Century Church of St. Maria of the Mountain.

Italy’s Detroit is home to the Museo dell’Automobile (Automobile Museum). Its collection includes the first FIAT model, Bugattis, Ferraris, and actress Gloria Swanson’s Isotta Franchini from the movie Sunset Boulevard.

The Mole Antonelliana, the official emblem of the 2006 Winter Olympics, was once the world’s tallest brick structure. It houses the Museo Nazionale del Cinema (National Cinema Museum) that includes a film library containing seven thousand films.

The Piedmont region is well known for all kinds of food, often with a French style. Grissini (Bread Sticks) were also invented in Turin. See our companion article I Love Touring Italy – Turin, Piedmont for a sample menu and more information on local wines as well as an in-depth examination of its tourist attractions. Piedmont wines include Barolo, felt by many to be Italy’s finest red wine, and Barbaresco.

If you are planning to tour Europe, why don’t you consider the Piedmont region of northern Italy? Depending on your specific interests, this beautiful area might be an ideal vacation spot. You can get classic Italian food, and wash it down with fine local wine. There are even some parts of Piedmont that haven’t yet been discovered by tourists. This short article presents “the rest of Piedmont”, Piedmont outside Turin, the region’s capital and largest city. A companion article presents Turin.

Piedmont means foot of the mountains, and that describes the area perfectly. A large part of the region is surrounded by hills and by mountains such as the Alps. While the setting is beautiful, you should not expect a Mediterranean climate such as found in most of Italy. The Piedmont climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters, especially in the plains.

Stupinigi is a small village southwest of Turin in central Piedmont. Be sure to see the Hunting Lodge and its Museum of Art and Decoration.

The sunny Alpine valley ski resort of Bardonecchia near the French border hosted some events during the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics. It includes snowboarding and ski trails for all skill levels. The nearby village of Sestriere was a major site during the 2006 Winter Olympic Games and the 2006 Winter Paralympics. The resort offers night skiing and, during the summer, Europe’s highest altitude eighteen hole golf course.

Alba contains a cathedral and several churches worth seeing and a great Municipal Museum of Archaeology and Natural Science. But people mostly go to Alba for the wine and the white truffles. Both Barolo and Barbaresco wines are produced within a few kilometers of the city.

Asti has often competed with its neighbor, Alba. Both produce white truffles. And they are both important wine producers. Asti Spumante, now called Asti, was probably the best-known Italian sparkling wine. Each September Asti celebrates its victory in a Middle Ages battle against Alba in a bareback horse race which is preceded by a medieval pageant. You’ll also want to see the city’s remaining towers, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Saint Mary of Assunte Cathedral), and the Gothic San Secondo Church.

In 1986 in the Piedmont city of Barolo Carlo Petrini founded the Slow Food association as a protest against a MacDonald’s opening in Rome. Within twenty years Slow Food has grown to 80,000 members in 100 countries. See our companion article I Love Touring Italy – Small Town Piedmont for a sample menu and more information on Piedmont wines as well as an in-depth examination of the area’s tourist attractions. Piedmont is the region of Italy with the most wines in each of the two top classifications.

Sosushi is the result of an old stationery store deep seated in the historical urban tissue of Turin/Italy; being – almost magically – turned into a very cool and fashion oriented sushi bar by UAU, an Italian based architectural office. Clearly referring to the minimal tradition of contemporary architecture, the designers and architects succeed in transforming this space –with the help of clean cut shapes emphasized by matte white finishing and furniture details colored magenta- where a deep research on structure and shapes contribute to define a project where each detail is really not just left up to chance. A space, that actually is a harmonious composition balanced through the use of Plexwood, at its best to host hungry yet food conscious and design oriented individuals.

Despite being without a job … I’m still working !!!…. With the draft of the video interviews I’m wandering around the city to the house of my “candidate” .. the other day I was in Falchera for example, for those who did not know it is a neighborhood in Turin, but today at the Teatro Regio … ! … there’s a bit of difference … I would say it was great! I and the theater are two worlds apart but not because I’m not interested but because I can not go there … or I have approached us so much in my life … some rare occasions ..
But today, while wandering about the stage with an exceptional guide .. I thought that maybe I should get closer to this ‘world’! it was fantastic! … Cross my fingers hoping the experience will surely happen again .. I will give account.
The only problem with this project …. pour out what videos. create the mount …. and index it! Everio .. I use to download it first, then power directory .. I do not know that to change the format and make it smaller … and finally transania to index …: Result: _WHAT A DISASTER !!!!!.. if anyone knows give me some advice is welcome … because I’m stuck at step cuts … messes me too .. me … and hangs the pc ciaooo !!!!.. . are two days that I try …!!!!!!!! Oh well …

just a final note: I would strike a blow in favor of Silver X Factor yesterday made me much trouble because he forgot the lyrics …
… is a young boy who is going to undermine so poor .. I do not like much but I was sorry too !!!… Morgan to help him get out !!!…

You know you are a Green Day fan when your friends send you stuff from their friends about Green Day. And I’m incredibly happy that it happens! Jon Pack, a great photographer (see Jon’s work here), knows I’m a fan because he sits two cubicles away from me at work and has to listen to me talk about Green Day all the time. So when his friend, another talented photographer from Italy sent him a link to Green Day photographs on Facebook, Jon then sent the link to me. Thank you, Jon!

Green Day in Torino by Giulio Lapone

Italian photographer Giulio Lapone, had the great fortune to see and shoot Green Day’s last European arena tour stop in Torino (Turin), Italy on November 12, 2009. Giulio took some nicely expressive shots of both Billie and Mike, as well as the Italian audience. You can view the entire set of photographs at Giulio’s Facebook page here. While his normal site isn’t quite working at the moment, you can still view his other work here. Thank you, Giulio, for giving me permission to post some of your images here.

And yes, Giulio, you ARE the best photographer in Italy!

What I love about these photos from Giulio is the quality of motion within the images. Just like an actual Green Day show, everything is moving, from the Pink Bunny to the sweat pouring from Billie’s face to Mike’s bass with the video fire behind him and the fan that is in complete emotional synergy while singing with Billie. They also show two-thirds of a band at the end of a brilliant and tiring European tour, where, though it’s obvious that they need a break from touring, it’s also obvious that they love to play.

Green Day has often said how they love Italy, and from Youtube videos of the last show on this European tour, Italy loves them, too!

I may have mentioned how the weather here in Turin is basically the same as Seattle’s. This is good in a variety of ways: the city doesn’t smell (unless you step in dog poop), it washes away said dog poop on the sidewalks, there are enough porticoes to avoid most of it, it isn’t a muggy rain, when one is bored on a Sunday because everything is closed–it’s easier to sleep in very very late, etc. Of course, there are drawbacks: it can be bone-fuckin-chilling cold, buses tend to not run on time, so you must pray for a covered bus stop, people have no problem stabbing your eye out with their umbrellas, and it also happens to rain for two weeks straight at a time.

But, it also makes people feel the need to be all warm and cuddly. My cellphone has been lighting up for two days with various and sundry men coming out of the woodwork, some of them appearing from the very beginning. I’ve heard from both the vanished Filippo and Gian, a new one named Giuseppe, I have a date with Michele today (at Artissima), yet another shopping ‘date’ with Mauri, tickets to a Depeche Mode concert on the 26th, an Opera on the 4th, and apparently a visit to my first sex club this Saturday.

This sounds rather busy, and it actually is considering I have even more students now, but it also depends on two things. A) the Italians not being flaky and B) me feeling motivated enough to get out of the house on these rainy days (mi piacciono..Agatha Christie and a blanket..). But, in theory, the blog should get interesting as my count-down to coming back home to Atlanta commences.

(Born November 18, 1804, Turin, Italy—Died January 5, 1878, Florence), general and statesman played an important role in the Risorgimento (a nationalistic revival movement to unify Italy).

A graduate of the Turin Military Academy, La Marmora entered the army in 1823 and first distinguished himself in the Italian wars of independence against Austria, especially at Borghetto and Pischiera (May 1848). He also commanded the Sardinian forces in the Crimea (1855). On August 5, 1848, he rescued Sardinian king Charles Albert from Milanese revolutionaries, who had resented the King’s armistice with the Austrians. He was promoted to general in October and served as minister of war until November; he later suppressed an insurrection as Genoa (April 4-5 1849)). As minister of war again until 1860, he reorganized the Italian Army.

La Marmora served as premier of Piedmont from July 1859 to January 1860, as well as governor of Milan and the King’s lieutenant in Naples. In September 1864 he again became premier, and as minister of foreign affairs in April 1866, he concluded Italy’s alliance with Prussia against Austria. As chief of staff in the ensuing war, however, he was held responsible for the overwhelming defeat of the Italians by Austria at Custoza (June 24, 1866). La Marmora retired to private life shortly afterwards, although, after Rome was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1870, he was appointed the king’s lieutenant there. Among his several works, Un po plu di luce sugli eventi politici e military dell’anno 1866 (1873; “A Little More Light on the Events of the Year 1866”) seeks to justify his actions at Custoza.

Firenze, Italia – During the Festival della Creativitá, I was fortunate enough to learn about some interesting projects that I think are worth knowing about, discussing, and sharing. One of these projects, known as ‘rikea’ is the work of Marco Lampugnani and Antonio Scarponi. The project won an honorable mention award at the 4th International Architectural Biennale in Rotterdam, where it is on display until January of 2010.

‘Rikea’ is a prototype for a micro urban structure that conceives the free market Balon (Turin, Italy), as a system of ‘instant urbanization’. The project was prototyped together with IKEA and Italcementi. It consists of tiles for the recognition of the merchants’ position on the public space where it is possible to install elements of the system ‘broder’ produced by IKEA in order to support temporary shelters. The re-use of the foldable sofa ’svingen’ (IKEA) is adapted to realize a trolley for goods delivery. (© mlampu & conceptualdevices)

__After 21 days, 6000 miles driving the Land Rover Defender 90 and nearly 1000 miles covered on numerous ferries, our trip to the most Northern point in mainland Europe was complete. From the stunning, moon-like landscapes just North of Oslo to the cosmopolitan bustle of Helsinki, this epic journey provided a healthy dose of practical and personal challenges.

__Leaving Turin early on the Saturday morning, we headed through Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, breaching the arctic circle to reach Nordkapp, Europe’s Northern tip.

Also mich haben meine Eltern besucht. 23.-28.Oktober 09
