What features should I look for in a quality budget laptop?
The good news is that Laptops and Netbooks are getting cheaper. If you are looking for machine now you will find many bargains. What is the difference between Laptops and Netbooks? The biggest difference is Laptops are bigger and heaver than Netbooks. In addition, they also have more processing power and a bigger screen. If all you are going to do is cruse the internet and do some light word processing then all you need is a Netbook. These are light weight but with a smaller screen. Typically the price is $300 or less for a Netbook. These are so light weight and small you can store them in a medium size purse. Laptops are going to have a more powerful processor and usually have a larger hard drive for more storage. What about an older model Laptop? You will find older model Laptops at a good price. The main difference between these and the newer models is that the newer models will be a little lighter and thinner. In addition, generally speaking the new models will have the newer more powerful processor as well.
The processor is the heart of any Laptop and dictates really what you can do. For example, using a Laptop with a lower grade processor such as an Intel Celeron will have a hard time with keeping up with the demands of gamming or video editing. Here is how the processors stack up and what you need to look for. Intel Core 2 Duo is the top of the line. Older Pentiums are good. Stay away from lower models like Intel Celeron. For AMD processors Turion is a good processor as well as anything in the Athlon family. Avoid the Sempron. This is AMD’s budget chip and is similar to Intel’s Celeron.
The screen size is the next very important feature to look for. After all you will be looking at your Laptop for extended periods of time and will want to see what you are doing, right? A screen size of 15 inches should be the minimum. Most Laptops carry a screen size of 15 inches. If you are planning to have many Windows open at the same time or watch movies then a lager screen size will serve you better. However, there is a trade off. Larger screens usually come with more weight. You may not want to carry a heavier Laptop.
Most new models come with either Windows 7 or Vista. For Vista I would opt for either Home Premium or Ultimate. If you find a Laptop at a real good price and it has Vista it’s still a good buy. The upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista is easy and by buying a Vista Laptop could save you money. Any new hardware or software you purchase will work fine on either Vista or Windows 7.
To wrap up the last few features look for the following: 2GB or RAM and a 160GB hard rive. If you are going to do video editing then you will need a larger hard drive and possibly other more advanced features not discussed in this article. A DVD burner that burns CDs and a web cam are nice features. A wireless card is great to have. Also, there are many after market wireless cards and USB devices that you can purchase separately at a later time if needed. Fortunately, most Laptops have wireless as a standard feature. You will use this to connect to your wireless network at home or use Wi-Fi hotspots at libraries, airports and other public locations.

So, my computers won’t have near as much detail as my cars – of course, they shouldn’t, considering they are not in the same category at all. My wife and I both have Dell Inspiron 1501’s. I am an AMD fan, and Intel did not have a good mobile processor (not that I’m saying AMD’s is great) at the time of purchase, or one that was in my price range, so we (I) went with AMD. We have the AMD Turion X2 TL-56 processor, 2GB of RAM, 120 GB hard drive (since upgraded to 320GB in mine), the rest is the basic configuration.

We got Windows Vista Home Premium with our machines, and it was shortly before Microsoft had release Service Pack 1. We were able to install multiple updates that helped the performance and reliability of Vista tremendously, and those updates were included of course in SP1. In January of this year, I started experimenting with Windows 7 Beta, and was so impressed, I have not looked back on Vista. However, my wife did not have such good luck. Her IE (8, but in Release Candidate form) tabs would freeze up, and since 99% of the time she spends on the computer have to do with the Internet, and she didn’t like Chrome or Firefox (neither do I really) she switched back to Vista.

By that time, Microsoft had released SP2 for Vista, and also Security Essentials. Immediately, Security Essentials started notifying her that websites she visited were trying to “attack” her computer. AVG Free had done no such thing – in my opinion, that is what caused her problems on Windows 7.

Shortly after we got our computers, Dell introduced several new product lines for their laptops, and redesigned the look of their laptops. I have looked at their new laptops multiple times, especially for Danielle. She uses her laptop much more than I use mine, and she needs a new one. However, her sisters have Toshiba’s, and they seem much nicer…the look, the feel, the design, the parts used seem much nicer than what we have, or what Dell has. In conclusion – our next one might be a Toshiba, unless Dell can release something worth buying.

I’ve just discovered this today. Workspaces, workplaces, workstations, whatever you wish to call the

I’ve just discovered this today.

Workspaces, workplaces, workstations, whatever you wish to call them, they all play a big role in:

1) How much work you get done

2) How fast you get that work done

3) What kind of work you get done

My story is extremely short, but here goes:

Two days ago, my internet went down. That’s not correct, as my mom could still access it, but I thought that my router was broken, something like that. So, I go downstairs, and asked my mom if she could access the internet. She said yes.

I thought it was weird, so I went back upstairs, and tweaked my computer settings, my router settings, connection settings, used different cables, changed my IP, and after an hour of fruitless troubleshooting, I went downstairs.

From the kitchen, where it is close enough to the router to get a “Good” on the Windows Connection Gauge/meter/tray notification, I enabled my Wireless, and connected to my network. Bingo. Ran back upstairs with my laptop, and tested the connection with cable, again. No cigar. I thought it was a problem with my router.

I moved my whole workstation downstairs in one fell swoop. I was carrying my computer + my cooler in one hand, along with the battery, my keyboard in my other hand, my mouse in my pocket, backpack on my back, papers, pencils, erasers on top of my laptop, and textbooks that I couldn’t cram into my backpack under my arms.

On the kitchen counter, it was an easy set-up. Around a minute, and I had everything connected, ready to go, just like it had been there for months.

I stayed downstairs for a day. Eventually, I was sick of the amount of activity in the kitchen, and the mess of papers and items on the island and the table itself. My dad would watch TV at the loudest volume, my mom would wash the dishes, and my dog would whine and beg for food.

Later on Sunday, I decided to move.

I first hunted around for an area with good connection. My router wasn’t top-notch, so it could only reach about half of my house. Sad, my room was on the opposite end. Blegh.

Anyways, I go to my room again, hoping, but not expecting, the cable connection to work. No dice. I go to my sister’s room (she’s off to college) and set up there with a great connection to the internet.

I quickly bring my stuff up, clear off a short table, one shelf of a large bookshelf, and set up my workplace here. Right now, the wires of everything are behind my desk, out of site, and the well-lit table I’m at right now is large and without any pockmarks or scratches.

I quickly finished my homework it would have taken me 7 hours to finish at my normal station, even with checking my RSS feeds and other things. I didn’t time it, but I believe it was around two hours (includes reading other blog entries, CNN, BBC, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Engadget, Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Wired, GNews, and my mail. :D)

Now, I do agree with the articles I’ve read on how to be more efficient at work and at school.

First, never work in the same place you sleep. I feel the stress from normal work doesn’t give you good sleep. My examples? I fell asleep in EVERY math test so far. I didn’t do well at all.

Second, disconnect yourself from all distractions. Including computers. (I can’t live up to this, but I’m trying. The time the power outage occurred, I finished my homework in half an hour. And I had easily twice the amount to do.

Thirdly, be neat and organized. Try to start from the beginning of the time you start working in a specific workstation and maintain it all the way to where you currently are. This piece of advice I learned on my own had helped me with finding the things I want to find, when I want it. Make sure to have a large, open space for your desk, and have very few items on it. Have a secondary table for your books, materials, and finished work. If you have to, have a third for your papers.

Fourthly, give yourself breaks. I give myself a break after every major assignment finished, or three minors lumped together. EX: After I finish my math and my World Geo homework, I put it away and pull up my keyboard, and start reading up on CNN and the news I missed. After 15 minutes, I get back to work, and I do this until I finish my homework. Breaks allow you to clear the cache of your mind and lets you start anew on your next assignment, leaving you feeling refreshed and ready to take anything on.

And there’s my advice and my tactics on staying on top of what you do, how you do it, and how fast you do it. I’d also like to hear your tips and trick on how you get things done. Leave a comment, if you’d like to share, or if you just appreciate my post. Thanks!

Do you have the latest PC game that you love playing and want to play it while you is traveling? Do you want to play World of Warcraft while you is on a long boring road trip? Then you need to start looking for gaming laptops. Gaming laptops are specially built for playing PC games without slowing down. Now not any laptop will perform good enough for all PC games, because some games have very high graphics and need plenty of processor speed. This article review describes in detail about the top existing gaming laptops that you can buy.

Alienware Aurora mALX

The Alienware Aurora mALX laptop is SLI-based, 19 inched and weighs about 15 pounds. This laptop will dominate any gaming laptop in its immediate surroundings. The Alienware Aurora have dual HDD support up to 240 Gigabytes, 1680×1050 pixel display, and a 2.4-GHz AMD Turion 64 ML-44 processor. This laptop may be the best laptop for playing the latest action packed fly-by PC games released. The gaming performance is great, but the AMD processor is a little slower than Intel’s Core Duo chips. The Alienware Aurora maLX will use a lot of power, as the battery can be drained within just one hour. The price for this laptop will be in the range starting from $4500 up to $5500 (with configurations)

Hypersonic Aviator Fx7

The hypersonic Aviator features a 2.6GHz Athlon 64 FX-60 desktop CPA and has 2GBs of RAM, and a built in Webcam and a TV turner card. This laptop is built purely for your entertainment. The laptop weighs about 13 pounds and has a 17 inched LCD. The video display is excellent and can turn up to 85 frames a second for several PC games. The Hypersonic Aviator FX7 have a high score (8.5) among many gaming laptop fans. A downside to this laptop is that it can get hot pretty fast, and the cooling fans will make noticeable noise. The laptop price range is around $4800.

Voodoo Envy U:734

The Voodoo Envy weighs 8.7 pounds and has a 17 inched display, so it is pretty light for a gaming laptop. The color display is very good but will darken a little when viewing from a 45 degree angle. The Voodoo Envy U:735 has four built in speakers which produce very good position audio sound. During two straight hours of game play the laptop generates about the average amount of heat most gaming laptops creates, but would do poorly for usages of regular laptops. The price of the Voodoo Envy U:734 is around $3700.

Feeling a tad remorseful about thinking about a netbook? I mean after all those things don’t got a DVD drive, a high-end processor or lots of RAM/HD space, or a (meaningful) graphics card/system.

Feeling cheap? Then here’s your solution:

Toshiba Satellite A215-S4697 Turion 64 X2 1.6GHz 15.4″ Widescreen Notebook (refurb)

1GB RAM, 160GB HD, 15.4″ screen, DVD-RW, Vista Home Premium, 1.6 Turion 64 X2. So basically a netbook in terms of the RAM and HD, but can’t beat a 15.4″ screen!

All the talk between (presumably) tech savvy people doesn’t translate into what would work for

All the talk between (presumably) tech savvy people doesn’t translate into what would work for an average consumer while making a choice. Of course, we are not going to add to the millions of tutorials available online to explain the concepts. This post is about processors and here we assume that you have at-least entry level knowledge about computer processors. We attempt to explain some of the features of AMD and Intel processors that you would care about.

Now, to begin with, both of them are equally good processors in their own right and chances are that you wouldn’t know the difference between them if you weren’t as tech savvy or you didn’t probe into your machine. The street talk is that AMDs are good for gaming and Intel is better if you want to run apps and business programs. And AMD chips and motherboards costs are usually lesser than the Intel ones. AMD chips do more work per clock cycle than Intel chips. So a 2.2ghz AMD is comparable to a 3.0-3.8 Intel depending on the version of CPU. Here are some of the brands for AMD and Intel.

AMD processors brand names- Duron, Turion, Athlon, Opteron etc.

Intel Processors brand names- Pentium, Core 2 Duo, Dual Core etc.

Needless to say, Intel enjoys a lions share of the processors market. AMD created waves in the market with its Athlon processor which claimed to be faster than the then current Intel chip – the pentium 3. All processor specifications were measured by the speed (e.g. 2GHz – so 2000MHz). AMD was successful on making strides into the desktop arena since they used not only pure speed but a more specific command kernel. So, although on paper, they values seemed to indicate that the AMD processors are slow, they provided results as fast a an Intel CPU. So an AMD at 1.66 Ghz was the same as a INTEL on 1.8GHz)

AMD focused on PC and consumers and lowered the costs for their CPUs to be more competitive. Nowadays the AMD CPUs are hotter than Intel CPUs. That means you should have a better cooling system and a your system will be a bit louder compared to Intel systems. AMD and Intel have been competing over costs for a long time now. AMD based desktops and laptops are usually cheaper than the Intel based ones. So if cost is a bigger factor, AMD chips suddenly become an attractive option.

Intel processors is all that we have known until AMD came. The first microchip from Intel was introduced in 1971. The first 32 bit processors started appearing in the 1980. Enough about history. Most of the pentiums such as pentium 4, pentium D, Celerons have been discontinued.
The current crop of processors are the Core2s (Core2Duo, Dual Core, Core2Quad) which have established itself as the quasi standard in processors for desktops and laptops due to their immense popularity and reach. Click here to see the list of Intel processors with their specifications. (Source: Wikipedia). People looking for basic computer mostly opt for dual cores. Most of the desktop processors that you would find are from the E series. Intel tried to name the core 2 duos in an interesting way. It is important because they charge more for a different kind of processor. So for example a T5500 would have a different cost compared to say a T5550. The only difference is a minuscule increase in processor (from 1.66 GHz to 1.83 GHz) power which an average user would not even notice. All the other specifications are the same.

If you are concerned about the heat in the processors, it would serve you to know that AMD chips generate less heat compared to Intel chips. So unless you are prepared to ensure proper cooling for Intel, AMD chips appear to be an attractive option. However, the current Intel processors running on the Centrino or Centrino Duo platforms have greater heat dissipitation compared to the earlier chips. Also, these run on lower voltage compared to their predecessors so that means lesser power bills.

Bottomline: AMD chips are preferred for gaming and Intel chips are good for multiple applications and business uses. AMD based desktops and laptops are cheaper than those running on Intel processors. However, Intel processors are the market leaders in the processor industry. Also, having an Intel would take care of any possible compatibility issues.

In an attempt to diagnose the various maladies of my laptop, I downloaded NHC to monitor my core tem

In an attempt to diagnose the various maladies of my laptop, I downloaded NHC to monitor my core temperature, HDD temperature, and clock speed, among others. I was rather surprised what I discovered.

Acer Aspire 5102WLMi

Processor: AMD Turion 64 X2

RAM: 1 GB DDR2

HDD: 120 GB

Video Card: ATI Radeon XPress 1100

The main issue with my laptop is that it seems to hang randomly, for no reason at all. It hangs while I’m surfing the net or even just leaving it to idle. There is nothing I can do to make it BSOD reliably; it just seems to die whenever it wants to. This hanging takes one of several forms.

1. Everything just stops moving.

2. The screen turns into color bars, the same color as the predominant screen color at the time it was running.

3. BSOD, often with an error “Driver IRQL not less than or equal.”

I’ve tried updating my drivers, but the same thing still happens.

Another thing that I found really strange: When running programs as light as Visual Boy Advance, the CPU usage shoots up on both cores, like clockwork, every 30 seconds. (With Dynamic switching enabled, the interval increases in frequency to every 15 seconds.) I then saw that NHC detected this periodic stutter as both a drop in core speed (from 1.6 GHz to 800 MHz), resulting in an increase in usage. When idle, this doesn’t happen. However, take a look at the following:

Look, the processor is building a castle wall! It’s going to be able to effectively fight off sieges with arrow volleys! *Ahem*

This is at maximum performance, with no dynamic switching. The only programs actively running are Firefox 3 and iTunes. The core temperature is also disturbingly high. (NHC’s “Warning” level is 80 degrees Celsius, and “Shutdown” level is at 95. That’s almost hot enough to boil water. <_<)

So I’m not exactly sure what’s causing this.

I tried turning off maximum performance and went with dynamic switching instead. I got this. The processor speed is understandably jittery, switching from full to half depending on the need. However, the core temperature drops dramatically.

So yeah, what the heck is wrong with my laptop? It’s about 2 years old already. I’ve never dropped it or poured my coffee onto it. It’s just really odd that its performance has dropped significantly ever since it started crashing like this. Is there anyone out there who can help me with this? I plan on buying a replacement eventually (I want to be able to play Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2), but the current budget does not allow for that any time soon.

If anyone has had the same problem or knows why this weirdness happens, please let me know.

I forgot to mention:

THE COOLING PAD! IT DOES NOTHING!

Cooling pads seem to have absolutely no effect on the core temperature. The readings I get are the same, with or without the cooling pad active. SpeedFan still detects my temperature on both cores to be in the danger zone, and disturbingly enough, my laptop seems to have no CPU fan speed monitor.

For the next few months, the big battleground is likely to be in notebook computer platforms, where both companies have new offerings, many of which are being rolled out at this week’s Computex show in Taiwan. AMD today formally introduced its new notebook platform, which has been referred to under the code-name of Puma, though officially it’s just the next generation notebook platform. The CPU is the Turion X2 Ultra chip (formerly code-named “Griffin”), which basically is two K8 cores (the same cores used in the Athlon processors) with some interesting new features: independent dynamic cores let the chip set different power levels for each core and the integrated “north bridge” chip, power optimized HyperTransport 3; a a mobile-optimized memory controller designed for DDR-800 memory.

The heart of the platform is the new 7-series chipset with support for the ATI Mobility Radeon 3000 family of graphics and Wi-Fi support from a third-party chipset (such as Atheros, Broadcom, or Marvell). The graphics come in several flavors. Most distinctive is the HD 3000 integrated graphics solution, which includes support for Avivo HD (for better hardware-assistend HD decode). AMD believes this will far outperform Intel’s integrated graphics. AMD says this solution will offer three times the 3D performance, 5 times the HD quality, and 40% faster wireless than Intel’s solution. I’m a bit skeptical on some of these numbers, but the proof will be in the final notebooks.

Toshiba on Wednesday introduced laptops powered by the new Puma-based processors recently announced

Toshiba on Wednesday introduced laptops powered by the new Puma-based processors recently announced by Advanced Micro Devices.

AMD’s new Turion X2 Ultra ZM processors will be included in Toshiba’s new Satellite PCs, which will ship later this year, a Toshiba spokesman said.

The Turion X2 Ultra processor is part of the Puma platform launched by AMD on Tuesday. The processors come in two speeds: the ZM-80 runs at 2.1GHz and comes with 2M bytes of cache, while the Turion X2 Ultra ZM-86 runs at 2.4GHz and includes 2M bytes of cache.

Along with the Turion Ultra ZM, Toshiba said two other chips from AMD — Athlon Dual Core QL and Turion Dual Core RM — will be offered in the Satellite P300D, Satellite A300D, Satellite M300D, Satellite U400D, Satellite L300D and Satellite L350D laptops. It wasn’t immediately clear what processors each laptop would come with.

During the Puma launch, AMD said it had won notebook designs for the platform from PC makers including Acer, Asus, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, NEC and Toshiba. About one-third of laptop designs have 15-inch screens, with other models having screen sizes from 12 inches to 18 inches.

Puma laptops are designed to run Windows Vista, AMD has said.

The Puma platform also includes the mobile AMD 7-series chipset and ATI Radeon HD 3000 Series graphics cards. The Puma platform supports hybrid graphics technology, which boosts the platform’s graphics performance by running both the integrated graphics processor and a separate graphics card.
