We had Senator Chiz Escudero as guest in one of the special Christmas episodes of WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE, here in Manila. Actually, we are calling the series WHO DESERVES TO BE A MILLIONAIRE, and we get celebrities and known personalities to play with a partner, a representative of the charity cause/group the guest has chosen to help.

We don’t tape in consequential order (of episodes), we adjust to the schedules of guests. I was excited when I arrived on the set and found out he was the first guest we were taping (though the first episode of the series aired yesterday, with CNN HERO EFREN PENAFLORIDA as guest). Sen. Escudero is my age, one leader I respected, and someone I look up to. I was disappointed when I found out he was not running for President in 2010. I’m still in the process of deciding who to support though, but he would have been a good choice.

However, my admiration and especially my respect for him was gloomed over by uncertainty, after the taping was over.

I really hope he was not taking it seriously, and he was just in a playful mood. See, Sen Escudero, in front of a studio packed with at least 300 people, tried to cheat, whether intentionally or not, every single time, every time he needed to answer a question, especially when the questions became tougher.

For those who are familiar with WWTBAM, the game starts off quite easy, with very simple questions. But they can get really tough. For some reason, Sen. Escudero found the questions tough quite early on. And he depended a lot on his partner, I’m sorry his name escapes me now. Well, okay, its a game, and even I always find the questions tough myself.

But we never had any other guest, and I mean NEVER HAD, any guest before who tried the tricks the good senator did.

For example, as he was pondering an answer, he asked our host, VIC SOTTO, whether he (the senator) can glance over at his mom (contestants are encouraged to bring families and friends for support, and they are placed at the back of the contestants, purposely to avoid any kind of coaching or improper assistance or any kind). The senator had his mom and some siblings with him that night. Sen Escudero then said ALOUD that if his mom smiles, that means his chosen answer (which he already said aloud too) is right. I cringed when Sen Escudero DID actually turn around to look at his mom (who then smiled)!. I saw how that made Bossing Vic uncomfortable, because the contestant was cheating right in front of him. He of course had to be gracious though. But proof of how good a host Bossing is, he made a joke and said it aloud that the show had a new LIFELINE (the tools provided to assist contestants when they encounter difficulities with certain questions) and its called ASK THE MOMMY. The audience laughed, and so did Sen. Escudero, who probably did not see the underlying tone of what Bossing said. True enough, the senator tried to do the same trick again only after a few questions, but Bossing was quick enough to cut him off and said, in the vernacular – AH, SORRY SENATOR BUT SISINGILIN NA KITA NYAN, ASK THE AUDIENCE NA YAN (I’m sorry Senator but if you look at your mom again, I wil have to charge you with one lifeline already).

When another question came that was about which PESO bill had a certain object, Sen. Escudero asked Bossing if he can take a look at his wallet. And when the senator decided to ASK THE AUDIENCE (lifeline), he even told them “May mga wallet kayo dyan di ba?”, practically telling them to check their wallets first. And twice, the senator asked Bossing if they can switch monitors, implying that Bossing’s monitor had the answers.

There were so many other instances through the game process that just made him look smaller and smaller in my eyes. But what totally floored me was this – he was playing for charity. I mentioned this at the start – the show was part of a special series. In the early questions it was established that the charity Sen Escudero chose (represented by his partner that night) sent kids to school. And with Bossing leading the way, it was established too that one kid needed P5,000. So, when they already won the first safe haven of P20,000, they said they are already set at helping 4 kids.

So imagine this – Sen. Escudero managed to reach the P250,000 level. That’s 50 scholars. By then he was out of lifelines already, so I was expecting for him to quit, when the next question proved to be tough to answer. After all, he could already send 50 kids to school. That was not bad, for the 3 hours he spent on the set. (For those not familiar with WWTBAM, if the senator chooses to answer that following question, and his answer was wrong, he will fall back to P150,000 (30 scholars). But if he gives the correct answer, he will go up to P400,000 (80 scholars). So, at P250,000 guaranteed, and if his intention was really to raise as much money as possible to help as many scholars as possible too, then basic wisdom would dictate he quit and take P250,000 home already, since he obviously had no clue what the answer was to the P400,000 question.)

As a backdrop, we had Mr. Paolo Bediones as guest a few episodes back. Again, all celebrities play for charity. Mr. Bediones was exactly on that same spot, same level. He already had P250,000. But he was so curious to find out if his answer to the P400,000 question was correct, so he wanted to continue and take the risk. But the big difference was – Paolo said if his answer was wrong, he will personally donate the difference of P100,000. That was cool.

Going back to Sen. Escudero, he did not seem to have any intention of doing what Mr. Bediones did. He was all set to answer, and risk losing P100,000, meaning 20 less scholars. I was totally aghast. Good thing he was prevailed upon by his partner, and he ended up quitting and taking the P250,000 pesos home instead (rightfully so).

We had to take some “cures” (where some parts of the episode had to be fixed for proper editing etc) so Sen Escudero had to stay back a few more minutes to shoot them. By then I was so totally disappointed with him, I actually felt angry. This is one man I believed and respected.

As they say, you will know the real character of people during their most unguarded moments. That night, Sen. Chiz Escudero took time out from his very busy schedule to guest in WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE to help his chosen charity as much as he can. I’m glad he did. Because as far as I’m concerned, I saw his real self.

I will not trust a man, who, in a simple game show, tried to cheat, actually cheated, and put the fate of 20 scholars at risk (as far as getting education this year) just because of his ego, or whatever “playfullness” that was going on in his head that night. I can’t imagine what he will do when he actually gets to decide on what will happen to our country, to my life, and that of our children’s. I pray to GOD I’m wrong about this. We don’t have too many young leaders with the kind of charisma, and seeming wisdom Sen Escudero has. The studio audience, who were composed of students mostly, loved him. He was very popular, and they were all cheering for him. It was very obvious they saw him not just as a celebrity, but a hero, a leader.

But then again, maybe not.

Long-time Kapuso host Paolo Bediones was a big surprise to the entertainment press during the TV5 Christmas Party for the Press last night, December 3, at the PETA Theater in Quezon City. He was introduced as the newest addition to the network’s family.

“It was the hardest decision I had to make, career-wise,” the 35-year-old TV personality admitted in an interview after the event.

“To be able to decide whether I would stay with GMA-7 or to go to TV5, ang daming sleepless nights. Hindi ako makapaniwala na nandoon ako sa sitwasyon na ‘yon na I had the opportunity to decide.”

Paolo related that before coming up with a final decision, he had to endure two weeks of negotiations between GMA-7 and TV5.

He said “I had the best of both worlds, you see. TV5, they were offering something new; GMA-7, they were offering a fresh contract again.  Nandoon talaga lahat ng mga elements of a situation wherein mahihirapan ka talaga.”

Paolo was also thinking about his future plans for his career. He recalled, “After the second season ng Survivor Philippines, nararamadaman ko na na parang, ‘Saan ako pupunta? Ano na ang gagawin ko?’

“Next year, puro franchise ang mao-offer sa akin, will I be hoping and praying na sa akin mapunta? Kasi, ‘yong career ko hybrid, e. Wala namang ganung career talaga, di ba? It’s either actor ka or singer ka or host ka or newscaster ka. Ako ‘yong pahalu-halo, ‘tapos ang format ko sa News and Public Affairs was Survivor, Extra Challenge, Tok Tok Tok, hindi siya talaga pang-News and Public Affairs.”

The truth about the matter is, ABS-CBN and GMA are both number 1 when it comes to the television ratings. Yes, this is true. Because, in the Luzon and Metro Manila area, GMA receives the highest ratings while ABS-CBN has the higher ratings when it comes to the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

This is why, GMA in order to change it ratings in the south, started to spend more money to change the southern viewers’ taste. This is very clear here in Cebu. When the telenovela Rosalinda began to air on primetime, its stars visited Cebu. This is also what happened with their other shows, the stars of specific shows also visited our shores. They also have hosted a contest that the Manila viewers are not apart of. Billboard advertisements about GMA shows are also placed in strategic spots. All of these moves and many more are created just to entice the Cebuano’s to change their channels.

But of course, ABS-CBN does not want to release its hold in Cebu and the rest of the south. And one way on how they are succesful in doing this is by financing well their local Cebuano shows such as “Winner Ka, Kapamilya” and “TV Patrol Visayas”.

When it comes to Cebuano shows, ABS-CBN has all the advantage. “Winner Ka, Kapamilya” host Roy Empleo, just has the right charms to entertain us compared to GMA’s “Eat Na Ta’s” Papa Joe. Then when it comes to the local news, ABS-CBN’s “TV Patrol World’s” Leo Lastimosa is more credible than GMA’s “Balitang Bisdak’s” Bobby Nalzaro. Bobby Nalzaro just does not have the aura of being one of us. He seems so distant to the news which can be translated as being distant to the masses. He just does not connect to the Cebuano audience compared to the way Leo Lastimosa does.

Not to mention, TV Patrol World does not only have Leo Lastimosa, they also have their charming celebrity patroller Kara Mae Noveda.

So if this is the way ABS-CBN plays it in network wars in Cebu by having credible and charming TV personalities, then how is GMA going to counter?

Though somewhat outrageous, I have always thought that GMA ought to counter by bringing in some credible and charming celebrities of their own. But because they do not have any of those now in their current roster and it is going to take a long time to develop people. However, why not bring some Manila celebrities to permanently stay and work here in Cebu? Cebuanos such as Manilyn Reynes and Pekto could come back to Cebu and host shows. If that is not possible then have those young stars or some of those old stars of them to do it. By making such a move, they could really challenge the hold of ABS-CBN’s TV personalities over Cebu.

I believe that this move could work because Manila celebrities that come and visit just spend too little time with their Cebuano fans that it is not enough to challenge the charms of ABS-CBN’s local TV personalities. It is the local TV personalities that GMA needs to topple because this local personalities is one way of connecting Cebu audience to Manila. Roy Empleo connects us to Edu Manzano or Willie Revillame. Leo Lastimosa to Ted Failon or maybe Julius Babao.

It is time to start Christmas shopping.

Piaf’s main present, from both of us jointly, is to be a wooden play kitchen. (And before you cry, “gender stereotyping,” two of her favourite toys currently are a football and a set of magnetic cars – she just likes playing at cooking too. So yah boo sucks.)

Her mother and I will then obviously get her a few smaller bits so that, once we have used enormous flat shovels to dig her out from the avalanche of gifts her grandparents will doubtless send, we can spend some time playing with her individually on the big day, rather than just watch her fry the same plywood egg over and over again.

With potential postal strikes and international delivery times in mind, I have just ordered a couple of my “bits” – a new Charlie and Lola book (courtesy of Librairie Pantoute in Québec) and, on the basis of a half-forgotten spread in Popi magazine, a Dim Dam Doum DVD. 

Now, don’t get me wrong – there isn’t a fictional stuffed Francophone monkey in the world I would trust more than Popi. But, when it comes to buying a DVD about three caterpillars made out of felt, I want reassuring. 

With this in mind, I looked it up on Youtube.fr and saw this.  

And then this.

Suffice it to say that my doubts have been quashed and the order placed. Ça promet bien, le Noël.

Barack Obama se rendra au sommet de Copenhague

Il pouvait difficilement ne pas venir. Barack Obama se rendra finalement à Copenhague pour assister au sommet sur le réchauffement climatique, a annoncé, mercredi 25 novembre, un responsable de la Maison Blanche. Ce dernier a précisé que le président américain sera présent le 9 décembre dans la capitale danoise avant de rejoindre Oslo pour y recevoir son prix Nobel de la paix. Il ne reviendra cependant pas à Copenhague pour la fin de la conférence, qui se tient du 7 au 18 décembre.

Les Etats-Unis ont fait un autre geste avant la conférence : Washington a fait savoir que M. Obama offrira à la conférence de Copenhague une baisse de 17 % des émissions de gaz à effet de serre des Etats-Unis en 2020, puis de 30 % en 2025 et de 42 % en 2030 par rapport aux niveaux de 2005. Cet objectif de 17 % correspond aux niveaux du Clean Energy and Security Act, un projet de loi sur le climat adopté par la Chambre des représentants en juin. Ce texte, dont l’ambition a été relevée à 20 % de réduction, est actuellement débattu au Sénat. Par rapport à 1990, année de référence adoptée par l’ONU, cet objectif ne se traduit que par une réduction de 4 % et il semble très peu probable que le Congrès américain adopte une nouvelle législation avant l’année prochaine. Vint-six climatologues de renom ont publié, mardi 24 novembre,  document d’une soixantaine de pages, synthétisant les travaux publiés sur le réchauffement climatique publiés depuis le dernier rapport du GIEC (Groupe intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat) en 2007. Parmi eux, Nathalie de Noblet, directrice de recherches au Commissariat à l’énergie atomique, explique les raisons de cette publication, à quelques jours de la conférence de Copenhague sur le réchauffement climatique.

As I have said before, TV5 is slowly joining the network wars with its new shows and comedy format. One of their top rated show is “Talentadong Pinoy.” And because of this, GMA and ABS-CBN has countered with new shows that follow or innovate the “Talentadong Pinoy” format. GMA has “Extreme Pinoy Talent” and “Bitoy’s Showwwtime.” Then ABS-CBN has “Showtime” and the up and coming “Pinoy’s Got Talent.” Now, we all have seen GMA and ABS-CBN moves to counter the rise of TV5. Now the question is, how will TV5 react to such counter actions from these two huge stations?

Now TV5’s next move seems difficult, because we all know that these huge TV stations act like they are the only stations in the country. They do not even mention the names of other stations, and only call them as “ang kabila”. And by doing this, they will act like they are the only talent show in the country that has such a format and will absorb the audiences and contestants of TV5. And we all know these have stations have the capacity to do this.

But we also need to know what the capacity of TV5 is. The copying of show formats is nothing new to this country. ABS-CBN once copied the TV5’s “Shall We Dance ” format with “U can Dance” that had Iya Villania and Derek Ramsay as host. “U Can Dance” was cancelled, and ” Shall We Dance” continues to be strong today. Another example to this was ABS-CBN’s copying of “Nuts Entertainment”, this was “Yes, Yes Show!”. This endeavor was also another failure for ABS-CBN because this show got cancelled too.

Then ABS-CBN is not the only guilty party here, GMA does this too. The most present move for  GMA is to be seen with their new show  “BandaOke: Rock N’ Roll to Millions” which is a format that is followed from ABS-CBN’s  ”The Singing Bee.” Though “The Singing Bee’s”  format was a copy or an innovation to  ”All-Star K” The 1 Million Videoke Challenge”. Then “Wow Mali’s” format has also been copied before too with GMA’s “Bitoy’s Funniest Videos” but still “Wow Mali continues to get its deserved ratings.

So all of these proves that TV5 with its top rating shows can survive against its station rivals. The question just remains for how long can it do this and what new shows will it come up next to gain closer to the high ratings of GMA and ABS-CBN.

By the way, I would just like to point out that Talentadong Pinoy’s format is a copy of “Britain’s Got Talent” and “Wow Mali” is a copy to a lot of foreign gag shows. So which only means that all of our television stations and the whole film industry are guilty of copying other show formats or simply innovating them. That is just the way it is.

This copying of foreign shows and making them Filipino will also give us clues to what can TV5 can do next. They may start looking for foreign shows past or present, that has still not been introduced to the Philippine audience and then convert it into a show that will suit the Filipino taste. Or they can also make a truly original show, which I doubt they will do. So if you are knowledgeable of such foreign shows then you may be able to know how TV5 will counter. Good luck to TV5 then.

I was lucky to stumble on it sa TV5 one boring Wednesday night while channel surfing (local, no cable tv at the dorm)  (Dating ABC) sometime this November (I think). 

I never thought I’d ever get a chance to see this. I was on night shift back then when it was shown in theaters. 

But like they say in Filipino, kung minsan, sadyang mapagbiro ang tadhana. 

I had high expectations about the film. Primarily because it’s indie. And then it’s about the call center industry (where I presume a lot of talented, creative individuals pass time while waiting for their rockets to come, and where I presume he had some experience with). 

And also because Ned Trespeces studied at the UP Film Institute. 

Pasensya na talaga sa director at screenwriters ng My Fake American Accent (this is very Filipino—I mean the apologizing), but i don’t think the movie is quite ripe for production. They should’ve incubated this for a year more. That will give them a lot of time to think everything over (scripts, casting, dialogue delivery, location probably… etc).

I am suddenly reminded of Hiro Nakamura’s apologetic bow to a certain lady in Heroes before hitting her with a baseball bat.

The movie is very pretentious. Tapos parang wrong casting, lalo na si Buster at si Eric. ‘Di mukhang “galing PMA” si Buster. Parang pinipilit niyang magpakalalaki. The Eric guy’s kind of the same too. The movie appears to try to build an impression to the viewers that the Eric Guy is kind of a “sizzling hunk” but he looked (and acted) lame, pale and whimpy.

Mailes Kanapi’s acting of TL Joanna Seva’s character is an exaggeration. She could’ve toned it down a bit to make it look more authentic. Unless exagerration is the director’s main point.

Also, parang ‘di natural ‘yung exchange ng conversation between the characters. They appeared to be waiting for prompts (for the most part) or they’re probably just a bit too tensed the whole time. I would like to commend the QA guy (Martin de la Paz) though. In the movie, he is the closest semblance of what some L2 agents are when at work.

But that doesn’t save the movie from its crass dialogues and fake emotions (I guess that’s where the movie title gets its drive).

And Butch Francisco of the Philippine Star enjoyed watching it?

I don’t believe him.

And the burglar in the story! How he waxed poetic for the succeeding 5 or 10 minutes (and I can’t believe how “forever” five minutes is) is just dumbfounding. Darn, I know putting a customer on hold for 2 minutes seemed such a long time (yes I tried that with Globe POSTPAID and SMART POSTPAID and the MERALCO HOTLINE back when an electric post in our area got torched sometime last year).

But between listening to the hold music and the burglar’s elegy, I’d rather have the music. 

The gay director in the film who dumped Astrid’s screenplay is likewise worthy of note. Now that’s authentic. 

I have this sinister feeling that most Filipino Lit and Writing Giants in the Philippines are like that.

And that reminded me of the fast-rising Genaro Gojo-Cruz.  

There’s a lot of unbridled angst and political/socio-cultural commentaries everywhere in the movie, waiting to burst and impose itself to the viewers, and intensified by matching camera angles meant to underscore and ram hordes of statements heart-rending “life lessons” in one sitting.

It turned out annoying in every true sense of the word.

At some point I doubted my thoughts about the film. Which somehow explains why it took me long to publish this online. But when I browsed the net for comments about the film, I realized I am apparently heading the right direction.

I still could not forget how many scenes and dialogue exchanges sent shivers to my bones. I thank God I never attempted watching this in a theater. I didn’t have the time anyway when that was shown in theaters.

It could’ve been a waste of cash.

“Peace treaty”: Paris, 1919; (Nov. 14, 2009)

I watched a documentary on the French channel TV5 this Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009. The documentary was relating and commenting on the five months that dragged on before the most lousy “peace treaty” was finally signed to end WWI.  The chiefs of the main 5 nations who won in the First World War sat around in Paris to discuss how to partition the world.  The government chiefs were: USA (Wilson), Britain (Lloyd George), France (Clemenceau), Italy, and Japan.  Germany had ceased fire; the Kaiser, “Emperor Guillaume”, is settled in the Netherlands.  Turkey is declared defeated as ally to Germany.

Every delegation from all over the world, when allowed, was given 10 minutes to expose his case and demands.  Ho Chi Minh (from Viet Nam) was refused an appointment; he will later defeat the French in 1954 and then the US forces in 1973. Wilson wanted to discuss establishing a world organization of State of Nations to prevent further military escalations; the other four leaders were trying hard to convince Wilson that they are not against this idea but there are more urgent matters to resolve at this junction.  The four other leaders wanted to redraw world’s borders; cartographers spent 5 months redrawing borders.  Wilson wanted the people to decide and vote for their destiny; the other four leaders tried hard to educating Wilson on pragmatic procedures.

In the meantime, Communism was spreading everywhere in Europe and the USA; the “Spanish flu” had decimated 20 millions in Europe and America (it was called the “Spanish flu” simply because it was the Spanish press that divulged this scourge that States were trying to keep under cover.  Soldiers were returning from the war front at the pace of 100,000 each month; I see one-legged soldiers hoping around in a baseball game and their companions laughing and having good time. Soldiers were returning home to experience famine, miseries, and desolate institutions to taking care of business.

The world’s “five leaders” are smoking cigars and pipes and looking mightily serious. Lloyd George wanted 300 billions in gold for war reparation from Germany; his financial counselor, the famous Keynes, is steadfastly suggesting agreeing on 10 billions for material damages on the ground that Germany could barely pay even that amount; Lloyd George had plenty of time to get practical at this stage.  Wilson does not want any reparations and the other four leaders are fuming because it was not the US that lost millions of dead and injured soldiers and civilians in the war. Clemenceau wants to recover the Alsace and Loraine in addition to La Sarre region, rich in goal production, in Germany to exploit for 15 years in war reparation.  The Italian President just wants a port on the Adriatic Sea as an advanced post to check any resurgence of hostility but he is adamantly refused his wish.

A Germany delegation of over 110 individuals arrives in Paris to deal a peace treaty. The train is made to stop first in Verdun where 450 thousand soldiers on both sides died. This delegation is typing reams of legal papers claiming that they are not the only culprit for starting the war. The vanquishers have no time to read the German side of view: they want Germany to admit that it is the sole bad party and that it had lost the war. The Germans are upset: why discuss a peace treaty if the other party has already made his mind?  The German delegation refused the humiliating peace deal and the war was on the verge of resuming.  The German sank their merchant marine in order not to be captured by the allies. Clemenceau is furious because he could not convince Lloyd George to jointly board these ships to avoid sabotage.

By now, Wilson is totally worn out and more hawkish than even Clemenceau. In the last 5 days before the refusal of Germany to sign the humiliating peace treaty Lloyd George had second thoughts: if Germany is completely humiliated then any demy-god would take power and start another war. Lloyd George also needed to do trade goods with a strong Germany. What Keynes suggested as reasonable reparation of 10 billions in gold is fine with Lloyd; Germany does not need to admit that it lost the war. The problem was how to convince Wilson after manipulating him for five month on pragmatic politics. Wilson is adamant: Germany has to understand that it lost the war; period! Then the German Chancellor resigned and another peace delegation arrived in Paris and signed the treaty in Versailles. Wilson could go home to face major downturns.

The Italian President lost the election and could not attend the peace signing ceremony: Mussolini was on the rise. The American Congress refused the plan of Wilson for establishing the Society of Nations. China and Japan were not satisfied; Japan will invade China in 1935 and capture Korea as a colony.

While the leaders in Paris were discussing dividing the world into mandated colonies Wilson’s concept of people deciding on their future destiny by vote went down the drain as the months eroded his determination into “pragmatic” attitudes. Clemenceau got just what he asked La Sarre. Poland recaptured a region in Germany with the Dantzig port.

The Middle East people want independence from Turkey that lost the war. No problems.  Hussein of Mecca has many children. One of them by the named of Faissal is appointed King to Syria and Lebanon. Another by the name of Abdullah is appointed King to Jordan. A third is appointed King to Iraq, I think: I am confused.  Wilson sent a delegation to gather field intelligence on the wishes of the people. Clemenceau and Lloyd George had another plan: they partition the Middle East between them.  France is to have mandate on Syria, Lebanon, and “Antaquia” in Turkey that Syria claimed to be part of its lands.  England is to have mandate on Iraq, Jordan, and Palestine. There were barely 5,000 immigrant Jews in Palestine at the time.

Clemenceau sent a French army to depose King Faissal and govern his “mandated people”. Mount Lebanon is split from Syria and more lands are attached to Lebanon so that it might have the illusion of agricultural “self-sufficiency”.

Ahh, so this is how the US do anime. Avatar – The Last Airbender is one of the best animated series I’ve seen that’s not imported from Japan. Heck, I think it’s the best anime ever! Uhmm, well, it’s not technically an anime since it’s not from Japan, Nickelodeon created it. I already finished seasons 1 and 2 and so far I am loving it!

The story is cool and interesting, it’s about a kid with his friends trying to save the world from a nation that wants world domination. Also, the characters are pretty cool, Aang is the Avatar that knows how to control all elements, Katara is the nice girl that has some water bending skills and Sokka is the guy that you can’t help but laugh at once in a while. The comic reliefs are really really hilarious. The series is light in violence, but large in action. It would not only appeal to those who are into Japanese anime, but also to those who also don’t. It’s that good! I recommend you all to see it.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is already out on dvd. I saw one on SM selling for less than 1k for each season. The series has 3 seasons with 20, 20, and 21 episodes respectively. Also, TV5 airs it on weekdays, from 5:30pm to 6:00pm.

По информации центра, телекомпании не платили за передатчик несколько лет, в связи с чем накопились большие долги. По неофициальным данным, долг LNT может составлять порядка 300 тыс. латов.

В свою очередь, телеканалы могут отказаться от аналогового вещания вовсе, так как они считают цены завышенными, а телезрители все чаще смотрят телевизор через цифровое вещание.

That’s right, the flotsam and jetsam of daytime television, the famous-for-being-famous, those lowly scum who come from nothing and dare to have ended up with more in life than you do. Riches beyond your wildest dreams, just for being in the right place at the right time, for having a big mouth, or a gay son, or big breasts. They’re ready for a roasting! Who’s going to get roasted today, then? The Frikis you say? Yeah, I hate them, those Frikis, burn the lot of them, chuck ‘em into the fiery pit of Hell, because they deserve it, the talentless upstarts. Kill the Frikis!

Would you like to see some Frikis being lynched? All you need to do is look for links on Youtube to clips from Cardenas’ film ‘FBI’ Frikis Buscan Incordiar (Freaks Seeking Wind Ups) You will have to have a strong stomach. I am a fan of Horror films, but that’s because I know they’re not real. Watching this is truly horrific, because you know the tears and the laughter are genuine.

In the film, which took an impressive €917,643,64 in 2004, proving that there is always a baying public for the Inquisition, Cardenas belittles and righteously ‘punishes’ various characters who need pulling down a peg pr two for the unforgivable sin of being tv trash. The clips are disturbing, not least because of the gusto with which the presenters intimidate their victims, Cardenas in particular.

But who is this new Torquemada of daytime tv? More vindictive than Jeremy Beadle, More self-important than Jerry Springer and more brutal than Robert Mugabe. What do we know about him? Go to the FBI webpage and you can check out his credentials:

I did the flimsiest of research. According to Wikipedia: ‘Cardenas employs a caustic and ironic tone with his interviewees….contributing to his early rise to fame but now this irony has tipped over into excruciatingly leaden practical jokes…. from a simple interviewer to the provoker of situations which invade the victim’s sense of honour and go so far as to belittle some mental illnesses and disabilities for the supposed amusement of his public and his own personal financial gain.‘

Cardenas, during his time at Telecinco (TV5, once known as Teletetas’ – ‘tiittytv’ for it’s lowbrow programming) honed his interviewing technique with the use of grotesque side-kicks who have since made a name for themselves. People like Carmen de Mairena, a transvestite well past her sell-by date, El Pozi, a toothless village idiot with one catchphrase, and la Pantoja de Puerto Rico, another transvestite who specialises in mimicking Isabel Pantoja, who is difficult to distinguish from a transvestite herself. Let’s all laugh at the freaks as long as the freaks get some cash crumbs as well.

Luckily, someone has already had an inkling that all is not well with Cardenas’ cruel humour. In 2005 he was taken to court and sentenced for offending the legitimate honour of a disabled interviewee. Something tells me he’s not really that bothered about the sentence. He has over 100 other cases awaiting trial.

But you will have to watch some clips from his film to make up your own mind. You don‘t really need to speak Spanish or understand the dialogue. The images are enough. The set-up is self-explanatory: First appeal to minor celebrity’s greed/lust/pride – ‘do you agree to our conditions? We want to send you on a cruise/give you a gift/take you somewhere special./film a porno scene with you.. sign here….’ Once the contract is signed, the poor sop is restrained physically under the guise of some trickery, then as realisation of his plight dawns, he/she taunted with a litany of ’sins’, and despite pleading, retrbution is administered, up to and well beyond the point of bad taste or compassion.

The scene where Carmen de Mairena enters the bedroom and seduces Arlekin while he recites poetry is, frankly, disturbing. She is willfully grotesque, the camera zooming in on the inside-out gusset of her tights as she straddles him. Their lingering kiss, as she sucks his lips with her inflated silicone mouth leaves you feeling queasy. Arlekin strokes her back and pats her tightly-stockinged buttock, which he thinks belongs to some young tart paid to seduce him. Cardenas leans over them by the side of the bed, offering devilishly suave, and somehow distinctly latino encouragement. Something creepy and unpleasantly soft and shaky in his tone of voice, what I would refer to as a ‘wanking voice’, as he insinuates

‘that’s right, have a good old kiss, oh yeah… go on, and now with tongues and everything…. that’s it, get that tongue in there… there you go…’

More disturbing is the depilation of the hairdresser Juan Miguel- oh, such sweet irony! I´m still not sure what his sin is apart from being a celebrity hairdresser and possibly having a Zapata moustache and unruly body hair. If you had any doubts before, these are scenes of bondage and torture. I felt distinctly uncomfortable as they strapped him onto the depliation bed and began to torment him, but the scene grew much worse. Cardenas and his blankly smiling fetishistic nurse were soon holding him down and gleefully tearing strips of hot wax from him as he screamed and begged for mercy. Watch their faces. Cardenas in particular enjoys his victim’s physical pain and psychological humiliation. It is pitiful at the end of the scene when the hairdresser tries to escape, half-laughing, half crying, and literally tears himself from the bondage of the depilation table, trailing metal appendages and straps. Cardenas follows him, hopping like a demon and taunts him, daubing him all over with wax in one last jeering attack. Cardenas is like the school bully here, giddy with glee at his own sadism and power. The type of little boy who always has to win.

Please don’t get me wrong- I am not against sadism per se. It is just non-consensual sadism I am against. These victims are not submissives: they express their disagreement, objections, nerves and finally anger and even fear, and Cardenas waves their contracts in their faces and continues to torment them with invasive, violent and dangerous punishments intended to provide public amusement.

There was something vilely aggressive about the witch-hunt of Encarni, the mother of some Big Brother contestant who went on herself to gain a career in day-time television. She committed the unpardonable sin of being a big-mouth tart who landed her own presenter’s contract. She was strapped into a chair-like contraption and hoisted into the air on a metal platform. All you needed was the duck pond and the screaming villagers. ‘If she drowns she’s innocent, if she doesn’t, we burn her!’ At the top of the bungee platform, after taunting her about the height and the precariousness of their situation a man bent over her and like Torquemada yelled a list of her sins into her face while she cried and begged to be let down. ‘Don’t push me off, please don’t push me off, please…’ she sobbed. Then he pushed her backwards into the abyss. Burn the witch! Kill it! Poke it with a stick!

La Bruja Lola (Literally Lola the Witch in case you were in any doubt what to hate her for). A pathetic and frazzled-looking old medium, apparently a charlatan, verbally provoked and mocked during a televised sceance and then threatened with live serpents. Another medium, Paco Porra, tricked into being restrained in a harness and hauled out to sea on the end of a rope despite the crew forgetting to fit his neck-brace and shouting, as his flailing body disappears underwater ‘he’s drowning- oh shit, I forgot the collar-’

And finally the torture of Hosmar, also known as ‘Rambo’s poofter son’. Watching this made me wince, as it most closely reminded me of depictions of demons tormenting people in Hell with fiery pitchforks. This poor victim was strapped into a wooden stocks, then electrodes attached to his bare behind, and was made to recite various humiliating pleas for clemency while stronger and stronger voltage was applied to his buttocks until he wept and sobbed for it to stop. The camera zooms in closely on his jiggling buttocks and weeping face. The Inquisitor’s nonchalance as he administers more and more voltage is deeply upsetting. Genuine suffering and degradation – real tears – that’s it, make the gayboy cry– hurt his arse- now that’s what I call television!

Uno dei miei post più consultati in assoluto riguarda l’impossibilità di ricevere Rai4 a Firenze (qui il link al post) e visto il notevole numero di commenti provenienti da tutta Italia, mi sembra che in molte zone dello stivale la visione di Rai 4 sul digitale terrestre sia ancora un privilegio di pochi.

Purtroppo non ho notizie nuove sulla visibilità di Rai 4 a Firenze sul digitale terrestre ma posso dirvi che finalmente Rai 4  è visibile via streaming in Internet! Basta collegarsi al sito www.rai.tv e si possono vedere in streaming i seguenti canali Rai:

Logicamente la qualità non è quella del digitale terrestre o del satellite, ma se ci si accontenta e se si scelgono i canali giusti (alcuni sono proprio ciarpame), si possono vedere dei programmi e dei film interessanti. Per la visualizzazione occorre installare il software Microsoft Silverlight.

Ogni canale ha accanto la sua programmazione ma in alcuni casi  e per qualche canale non mi  è sembrata sempre  aggiornata, però potrebbe essere un caso isolato o un problema del mio pc.

Dal momento che mi si è rotto l’impianto della tv satellitare sono disperatamente alla ricerca di informazioni per vedere in streaming i maggiori canali tv europei in diretta ma non riesco a trovare informazioni in merito (trovo solo piccole tv locali o spezzoni di programmazione come i Tg e basta). C’è qualcuno che potrebbe aiutarmi? Mi piacerebbe vedere  online la diretta delle seguenti tv:

• Francia (TF1, France2, France3, France4, France5, France O, Arte, Tv5)
• Regno Unito (i vari canali della BBC tranne BBCNews)
• Spagna (La 1, La 2, TvE internacional)
• Germania e Austria (ARD, ZDF, ORF, 3sat etc…)

Ringrazio anticipatamente chiunque abbia delle informazioni da darmi…
