Optus have launched a new iPhone app specifically for the 2010 Sydney Festival. We were asked to make a demo of the app that could be run on the cinema screens during the opening nights of the event. As usual, the use of animals is a mandatory. Given a small budget, animation was our only option.

The animation was done by Like Minded Studios and the sound mixed at Noise.

For an academically challenged canine like me, the cloistered life of books isn’t befitted. The other day, Calvy was too busy to play frisbee with me, browsing through his MBA course ware with eyes darted at the page at one instant and on the window at the other; waywardly his retina navigated behind his spectacles…so much for enacting intelligence:)

Dog grins are hard to enshroud, you’d know if you were a dog. Anyway, when he caught me mocking him, he nuzzled in a couch and put off his ‘intelligent glasses’ on the table. With an air of wizardly wand movement he asked me,”Well, what do you think of advertisements? “

“Ahem! Well…It’s promotion of some product or service”, I said.

“…and usually paid for”, he added.

Now that his ego was satisfied, he was back to his notes and devoid of his playtime, the professor in me delved in the pensive cocoon and recollected some of the most cherished commercials I had ever been subjected to. Naturally, all of them had one thing in common…dogs:)

So here’s presenting the succeeding entry in the Dogged reviews…the TV Commercials!

Well, there is no dearth of talent and wits when it comes to copywriters having dogs in their artwork, yet for the sake of succinctness in the post, I’ve taken the liberty of choosing four. However in the coming posts I’d again reiterate on the idea.

So, here’s presenting the TVC with pups in a starring role…

First we have the amazing campaign by dog food makers Pedigree wherein they embark on a pledge to help a shelter dog get adopted each time their product is bought and they sign off with ‘Dogs Rule’ . Though all the commercials under this campaign were high on emotion yet here are the dog’s pick…

…they say that hope and a little prayer never get unanswered so was true for Echo, here he gets adopted:)

Closer home, in India, the suiting majors Raymonds showed with their commercial that the complete man sports a softer side too.

The Mobile service providers Hutch(now known as Vodafone) build their brand in India riding on the back of a pug. The amazingly cute and unforgettable campaign had many of the master pieces yet the following commercial and the accompanying soundtrack is awesome!

Coming to terms with my momentary lewd conscience, I can’t help but leave you with something to feel light about after the emotional drive.

What? The aforementioned four TVC are already done with, well…I lied…here’s the fourth:)

Season’s greetings and a happy new year fellas:)

…till we meet again, here’s yoo-hoo from the Dogville!

Naqal ke liye bhi aqal ki zaroorat hoti hey. But a copycat rarely uses his own brain. Have you watched latest promotion by Mobilink? It’s about SIM lagao offer.(lagta hey logon ne Mobilink ki SIMs nikalna shuru ker di hein). How, stupidly and unsuccessfully, Mobilink has copied the Ufone style. Actually Mobilink tried to exploit the popularity of Ufone’s TV commercials but the advertising “strategists” of Mobilink should have thought that Ufone had introduced this funny, humorous and casual approach in Pakistan. Now whenever viewers watch such type of ad they recall Ufone, no matter who shoots runs and pays for it.

So it’s my sincere suggestion to Mobilink that it should stick to its native style instead of foolishly imitating Ufone.

An interview with Rajiv Jain Cinematographer
An interview with Rajiv Jain, Indian Cinematographer and owner of Rajiv Jain Films, Cinematography and Grips – Dubai – Mumbai – Nairobi.
Q: What is your job title? Where are you employed?
A: Director’s cameraman, director of photography. I have my own company, Rajiv Jain Films, Cinematography and Grips, and I’ve been doing it for about twenty-five years.
Q: How long have you been a cinematographer?
A: I’ve been doing it for several years, but I started my own company at about 2005.
Q: What type of training did you have to become a cinematographer?
A: I went to the Bhartendu Academy of Dramatic Arts. I had a two-year diploma degree in theatre arts. That put me into a position to see how the industry has changed a lot. Coming out of college, kids should just start their own company. First, they should decide what they want to do in the industry and then go for it. The sky’s the limit depending on the career path you choose.
Q: What do you like best about your job?
A: Working for myself. Having the freedom to make your own decisions, to make your own path about what you want to do. But you can go for a month without working if you’re on your own, so definitely put yourself on a business path as well as a creative path. Take businesses classes, not just liberal arts. The film industry is a business, just like the music industry. You have to be a self-starter.
Q: Describe your typical day on the job.
A: Which job? Normally when I’m not working, I’m in my office doing paperwork. From your office, you might have to go somewhere on location and that can be anywhere from two days to thirty days. A lot of our stuff is remote locations. Every job is unique. As soon as you think it’s typical, it changes.
Q: What career were you in before becoming a cinematographer? Do you feel that it helped prepare you for becoming a massage therapist?
A: I was doing theatre, photo journalism, working at a local channel and making a decent earning. I found myself incorporating paramount to my words, and when I started taking pictures and filming, I realized this was what I’m most passionate about. But when you have a creative bone in your body, like writing, it’s easier to expand into other aspects of a different creative trade.
Q: What traits do you feel are necessary to be successful as a cinematographer?
A: Everybody takes different paths to be successful. But you have to keep up-to-date. Editing and graphics has changed so much. The whole dynamics has completely changed. You have to be totally flexible and stay with the current trend.
Q: Would you say it’s imperative to have a college education for a career such as this one?
A: I don’t think it’s imperative, but what I got out of college is I networked a lot. I don’t think it’s a hundred percent necessary. But, of course, you should have a good school to teach you what you need. When you’re in college, you need to start working on building a portfolio and college can help with that. If two people went for the same job and they both had impeccable portfolios, but one also carried a four-year degree, you can bet that person’s going to land the job. To be in the industry full-time, not just freelance, means it’s important to get that degree.
Q: Would you recommend this career to someone else?
A: Yeah. I can’t think of anything better to do. I see things that people don’t see. Is it for everybody? I don’t think so. You have to have thick skin. You have to work for months on end. Don’t set your expectations too high. Be realistic. My first recommendation would be to go to college and get that full-time job. Get a feel for what the industry is all about. It’s hard to just have a good portfolio, unless you’re an amazing cinematographer. Doing it without college is extremely hard to do.
Q: What is your next career move, if any?
A: Retire and go village. No, but seriously, I’m going to do more projects. I want complete control of my future projects.

Shahrukh Khan has never been one of my favourite brand endorsers. He’s never been much of my favourite anything, actually. And with the new set of ads for Dish TV, I have two more reasons for it. Watch:

It’s strange for something to promise something as big as bringing home life and for the creative to be completely devoid of the sentiment. For all the PR and drama that ensued regarding Khan’s turning old, you’d think they could’ve brought in some of that drama into the ads as well.

But somehow an adopted kid finally being convinced over Tom & Jerry and an extremely unconvincing Khan as an old man didn’t bring in the same kind of charm Aamir and Gul managed to bring in for Tata Sky Plus or even the convoluted emotional hook the Airtel DTH ad thrived on. It’s got someone who’s supposed to be a force to reckon with and it’s still got nothing. Almost tragic like.

PROBLEM
Optus came to us with a new offer that included more value than has ever been seen before. As with all optus work, the inclusion of animals is a mandatory.

SOLUTION
We created a mad scientist baboon who in turn created a Monster Value Caps monster, with value so good, it’s scary. The work that was done was very new for Optus, we strayed from the cutesy, cuddly feel, nearly every brand guideline and created a campaign that was extremely recognisable and had great results.

Animation by Like Minded Studios and sound by Noise.

PROBLEM
Qantas.com added hotel bookings to their site which they had recently revamped. Not only can you book your hotel there, but you can do so knowing it has the recommendation of thousands of frequent flyers and Qantas staff behind it.

SOLUTION
We showed the experience of Qantas and their customers through the use of luggage tickets. The tickets symbolising the millions of travel experiences Qanats has been a part of, and wealth of knowledge they can pass on to make your next travel experience even better.
