If you properly prepare yourself, it’s amazing how comfortable you can be in cold weather.  (Please note, this is coming from a transplanted New Orleans boy who now lives in northern Illinois – so yes, staying warm and comfortable is definitely possible if I can do it!!)

On a typical late fall morning this year, it was common to have day break temperatures in the low to middle twenties, warming up to around thirty-five by afternoon – perfect weather for photographing the migrating Sandhill Cranes making their way down south.  I’ll be posting some specific product reviews and detailed tips on what worked (as well as what didn’t) but in a nutshell, here’s a list of some of the basics:

• Warm and dry feet are Number One: Ensure your boots are waterproof, even if you don’t plan on being in water.  Wear hocking or hunting socks that are appropriate for the temperature.  (and keep a dry pair in your backpack just in case)
• Two pair of gloves work best: Keeping my fingers warm seems to be the hardest for me, and the needs of camera controls make this even more challenging.  I wear a pair of this UnderArmor glove liners as my first line of defense, they’re thin and allow for great tactile control.  If needed, my second pair of gloves go on.  These are AquaTech Sensory Gloves that allow your thumb and index fingers to poke out when needed – really does the trick!
• Keep your butt high and dry: You’re not going to stand all day, and the ground will be (at best) cold and (at worst) wet which is a recipe for an uncomfortable photo hike.  Bring along your own seating.  I prefer a packable walking stool as they are very comfortable for long stays but any local sportsman’s store will also have a large selection of hunter’s cushions designed to provide a little padding and some insulation.
• Pay attention to where you drop your gear:  Depending on where you are, the ground may look dry but moisture can be lurking just below the surface.  If you can’t hang your pack, try laying it down on a bowed over bed of reeds, a bush or a stump.  Don’t just toss it next to you on the ground and expect it to be dry when you throw it on your back two hours later!

Well, those are some of the basics on my first real month of outdoor cold weather photography. Over the next several weeks I’ll be expanding on what I’ve learned with some deeper dives into gear, techniques and even some below zero weather tips – so stay warm for now!

Dan bagi user yang ingin membayar akses penuh pada akun premium ini, mereka bisa melakukannya dengan cara membayar bulanan lewat kartu kredit atau tagihan biaya ponsel.

Harga yang dipasang mulai dari US$ 1,15 hingga US$11,60 dan Twitter akan mengambil 30% dari biaya yang terkumpul.

Dilansir detiKINET dari Telegraph, Senin (30/11/2009), layanan berlangganan ini akan dirilis pertama kali di Jepang. Dan bila hal ini dinilai berhasil, maka negara-negara lain akan mengikutinya.

Popular movies kind of suck. Here’s an excerpt from something I wrote about why.

There are cardboard cutouts of the stars of The Twilight Saga: New Moon for purchase at Nordstrom next to a makeup line inspired by the teen flick. Burger King is selling “exclusive eco-friendly” Twilight water bottles—somehow linking vampires, hamburgers, and hydration.The book series turned movie series is an explosive franchise, and marketing opportunities relentlessly nag at every possible outlet.

There is no doubt modern cinema has proliferated every aspect of our lives, yet film quality has no continuity with this hype. The industry maintains a steady output of films executed devoid of craft; tiring clichés that may as well be remakes, and movies that make no attempt to challenge their audience.

Films have always been a source of profit, and their production has never been without an intricate web of promotion and publicity. That said, there has always been something that countered the profit aspect, like the use of striking aesthetics in 40s and 50s film noir, or the 60s French new wave cinema’s experimental editing. This balance is not even an option today for most filmmakers funded by major studios. The stark contrast between the radical developments in film as a visual and communicative art, and its stagnation beginning in the 80s is apparent on any main street marquis.

Contemporary culture has become increasingly bombarded with images, and the industry’s response has been the hyper-exposure and cross marketing of films, as is the case with the unavoidable Twilight Saga. The film industry pushes supplemental soundtracks, video games, toys, books, clothing, fast food, limited edition box sets, and hopes for the option of innumerable sequels.  Twilight’s flood of the media proves it is an extremely profitable success, but its caliber in the grand scheme of cinema is staggeringly low. It’s not beautiful, smart, clever, or thought-provoking.

Worse yet, as movie marketing has becoming an increasingly complex monster, popular film rarely says anything new, or strays from a predictable hegemonic formula. In the much-quoted words of French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard, “all you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun.”

It’s a sad and true statement describing Hollywood. Taboo topics are kept under the labels “independent” or “art house,” marketed for a smaller audience, and primarily paid for by funding outside the studio. Most everything on a main street marquis avoids what Hoberman describes as the damning “stigma of the “difficult”—which ranges from the absence of stars to the presence of subtitles.”

The industry assumes an audience has low artistic expectations, and strives to make films chalk full of familiarity. “Scripts [are] a kind of organized cliché. Genre rules” says Hoberman. The Twilight Saga melds high school lust and heartbreak with vampires and werewolves. It’s soft-core Anne Rice meets a new, less iconic Brat Pack.

It’s not hopeless yet. There are quality movies being made in today’s media-warped, unoriginal film industry. Finding them just might require some serious digging through heaps cinema garbage and of limited edition Twilight memorabilia.

Min lördag började lugnt och beskedligt. Pats kom förbi och vi lirade lite Fifa-09 som gick totalt åt skogen för min del. Vissa daga fungerar inte det spelet alls för mig. Mycket märkligt. Vid 19-tiden kom Glazze förbi. Vi gick till restaurang Wallermans på Norrmalm där han bjöd mig på god mat och mycket god öl. Att Glazze bjöd mig var pga att jag fyllde 40 (man) söndagen den 22:a november. När vi satt oss ner såg jag en gammal vän (TW) som kom fram och tjatade lite. När han fick reda på att jag fyllde år fixade han en överraskning till mig innan han och hans familj gick vidare. En av de söta tjejerna som jobbar där kom då ut med en flaska Mariestad med något sprakande och gnistflammande rör som satts fast på flaskan. Tack för den TW. Glazze och jag satt och tjatade, skålade och snackade gamla fylleminnen. Vi hade gärna stannat kvar och druckit om inte en riktig stjärna hade kommit fram och börjat tjata med oss. Han började med att jag har sett att det bara är vi som är alkisar här. De övriga 14 här inne dricker ingen alkohol. Om man sitter och räknar hur många som dricker alkohol eller inte har man inte mycket till liv. Sen undrade pajasen om vi ville göra honom sällskap. Aldrig i livet sa vi, drack upp det vi hade kvar, betalade och gick vidare till restaurang Kryddan. Där tog vi två öl var och fortsatte tjata om allt mellan himmel och jord. Vi bestämde att detta årets nyårsfirande skulle vara hemma hos honom på vischan. När vi druckit klart fick han skjuts hem av sin syster. Själv drog jag vidare till Plankan där ägaren bjöd på en födelsedagsbira. Jag stod o tjatade lite med personalen och tog till sist även en Guinness på flaska som gick ner innan jag tackade för mig och gick hem. Där slocknade jag rätt fort.

När jag vaknade på söndagen mådde jag inte så bra. Så jävla typiskt när min Pappa med familj skulle komma och fira mig på eftermiddagen. Det var bara och bita i det sura äpplet och ta tag i städningen som gick hyfsat fort. Telefonen ringde ett antal gånger då släkt och vänner gratulerade på den stora dagen. Runt halv tre började min baksmälla härja ordentligt. Svettningar och illamåendeattacker en halvtimma innan besöket skulle komma. Det var bar att bita ihop. Strax före klockan 15 kom pappa med familj. Jag bjöd dem på kaffe, te och dricka och till det en god smörgåstårta som jag fått av min mamma. Jag fick 1000 kronor och två blommor av dem. Dessa pengar lägger jag undan för jag håller på och sparar ihop till en platt-tv. Mer pengar kommer jag få nu på lördag när släkten på min mammas sida kommer på besök för att fira mig. Efter vi hade ätit satte vi oss i vardagsrummet där min systerson Anton spelade lite Fifa-09 medan vi vuxna satt och pratade om allt möjligt. Jag visade mina senaste bilder jag fotat för min pappa och han tyckte de var riktigt fina. Min pappa har ju också ett fotointresse. Jag fick reda på att pappa och hans fru ska åka till julmarknaden i Bremen ganska snart och de undrade om jag ville ha något i alkoholväg och jag sa då att en fin Highland Park single malt skulle sitta fint. Maten hade gjort så att jag kände mig bättre så jag orkade tjata och skratta utan några som helst problem. Vid halv fem tackade pappa med familj för sig och jag tackade dem för presenterna.

När de hade åkt slängde jag mig i soffan och slappade med lite tv tittande. Jag loggade även in på facebook och tackade alla vänner där som hade gratulerat mig. Resten av kvällen var det bara tv som gällde innan jag somnade.

Idag har jag varit nere på Pomona Balance och pratat med min coach. Vi tittade igenom mitt CV och hon föreslog en hel del ändringar så att det skulle bli mer attraktivt. När jag kom hem fixade jag till mitt CV som vi hade beslutat.

Efter detta åt jag upp resterna av smörgåstårtan och resten av kvällen ska jag bara ta det soft.

Passar även på att gratulera Firman Boys till segern i den uppgjorda huliganfighten här i Skövde i lördags.

I’m sorry that I couldn’t attend this year’s NewTeeVee Live event as I had in prior years.  Cliff notes here.

NewTeeVee’s Chris Albrecht’s interview here with Comcast’s Amy Blanse regarding Comcast’s TV Everywhere, already in trial since July and ready to launch in December, provides good insights into what TV Everywhere means for Comcast. 

First off, TV Everywhere is an industry initiative (cable, satellite, and telcos) where you can access certain networks you subscribe to both through the primary distributor and through the programmers’ website.  For Comcast specifically, you can have access to your specific packages’ On Demand content online.  If you currently subscribe to HBO through Comcast, then you can have online access to the HBO On Demand library via Comcast.net or Fancast.com on your computer/laptop.  Viewing requires a player download and a  1X authentication requires a download (per device, up to 3 devices allowed).  Once your laptop is authenticated, you can take your laptop anywhere and still have the same On Demand access.

Are there concerns within Comcast of cord-cutting (cutting off the cable service for on-line only services like Hulu)?  While Comcast is not seeing that right now, they are aware of the phenomenon and are watching trends very carefully.  Ultimately, there will probably be a mix of models rather than a winner-take-all situation.  Comcast’s goal is to be a facilitator between the programmer and consumer, allowing consumers to see their content when they want and how they want (cross platforms).  You go online and search for Entourage and you are presented with a list of consumption options:  download PPV during an early release window, view it on cable at X day and time, watch it on your mobile phone, etc.  And to add what Quincy Smith of CBS Interactive outlined, the goal is to dynamically insert ads around each one of those views based on what you like and where you are (e.g. location-based ads on mobile).

Ad loads and release windows still open and will wait and see what consumers respond to.  Comcast and the industry is working with Nielsen to make sure that programmers get credit for online views. 

FYI, Comcast On Demand Online downloads count towards their 250 Mb metered broadband caps.  Over-the-top (OTT) internet to TV box converters (boxee, XboxLive) boasting of poised growth.  Can they surpass the Comcast On Demand Online?  Or  hope to get a decent share of the pie.

Note that, employer or not, I do not always agree with Comcast on many levels, but I am impressed with what I’m seeing from the Comcast Interactive Group here.  I’ve said in prior comments here  that it’s going to take the strong arms and extensive programming partnerships of a Comcast, TW, or DISH to gather enough programmers – especially subscription-based, premium networks like HBO – to participate in On Demand Online.  But to be the facilitator (uber distributor, if you will) between programmers and consumers wherever and whenever they want to watch – well, pretty Comcastic-ly-sized ambitions, don’t you think?  Not a bad ambition to have.

可惜，你們始終是不同的人，有著不同的夢想，不同的執著。這次，很痛苦吧？不管是選擇跟隨的2只，或是其他4只。要知道，雖然這次不代表什麽，大家害怕的是，這是一個前兆。。一個誰也不想看到的結局的前兆。。

可是，即使換來外界的不諒解和誤解，到頭來，只要你們六個是了解彼此的，不就好了嗎。或許幾年后會被淡忘，但回憶是你們的、友情是你們的，所有的汗水淚水都是你們的。

Gestern war’s wieder mal soweit: die Mitglieder der Steuerungsgruppe der Nature Watch Hotels trafen sich in Innsbruck. Melanie Kaindl (TMS) und Katleen Johne (TW) hatten ein großes Paket an Arbeit mitgebracht.

Die Budgets 2009 und 2010 wurden besprochen, der Termin fürs Hoteltreffen Anfang Dezember fixiert (Einladung folgt) und die Ausbildung 2010 diskutiert.
