Since Windows 7 has been released to public, Microsoft has started working on the next Windows version which is codenamed as “Windows 8” at the moment.

“Stephen Chapman” @ Microsoft Kitchen posted a Windows roadmap which clearly shows that Windows 8 is scheduled to release in 2012. Microsoft has also mentioned in past that it’ll try to keep a fixed 3 years gap between future Windows releases and it seems that they are really working hard to maintain this gap.

As you can see in the above roadmap, Windows 8 is mentioned as “Major Release” and is scheduled for 2012. Just wait and watch this place for upcoming Windows 8 news and updates and also share your wishlists for Windows 8.

Google is testing a new interface for its search engine which is not available to public yet.

The Mozilla developers have released a total of three beta versions of the upcoming web browser Firefox 3.6 in November so far. The latest version Firefox 3.6 Beta 4 was just released and is now available for download at the official Mozilla website and through the “check for updates” option in the Firefox web browser itself.

The new version of Firefox fixes 140 bugs of which two have been rated as blocker and 21 as critical. It is therefor recommended for Firefox 3.6 beta users to update their web browser as soon as possible to fix the bugs and make the web browser more stable. Most of the bugs – if not all – seem to be stability bug fixes that fix possible crashes that can happen under certain circumstances in the older beta versions.

Seriously, when I get this, I freak out. What does this mean? That I’m not in control of my own computer? Shouldn’t I be incharge? But viruses think otherwise. They prefer to disable the task manager and the registry. And they amuse themselves. No amount of antiviruses out there can get rid of this. At least, that’s been the case with me. A Windows reinstall is always a viable option, but not in my case. My Intel 82845G Graphics Controller is so outdated, that even Intel doesn’t consider it to be worthy of getting a decent driver. The latest driver carries this stupid trojan, which disables important stuff. Tech gurus like me always like to mess up the Windows anatomy, and set it back again. Even novice users three-finger-salute Windows occasionally always, and kill processes. What now?

As always, here at Shadow Line comes another tutorial without using any third-party application. To fix this stupid error.

1] Open Notepad, by going to Start–>Run… and typing Notepad.

2] For enabling Task Manager, paste this:

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Or, for enabling Registry Editor, paste this:

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

3] Once you’ve pasted the required one, hit enter and open the Task Manager or Registry normally. Note that you’d have to do this always to open ‘em up

Lets take it a level further. Lets make a batch file, so that you can enable both with a single click from your desktop.

4] In Notepad, paste both the lines separated by a line.

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

5] After you’ve done that, go to File –> Save. Save it as fix.bat. You can replace fix by anything. But the .bat thingy is important. Save it at the desktop. Its easily accessible now. Double-click it, and you should see a command-prompt window for a split second. Open Task Manager and Registry editor normally now. You have to repeat this again, if you want to access the registry once more.

But if you’re the busy types, and you want someone else to do the dirty work, I’ll help you. Download the batch file itself.

So, thats it! Its fixed! But if you really want to stay away from all these viruses, I suggest you go elsewhere.

1) Extract the file onto your desktop and place them into a folder
2) Open ProRat.exe , you will get a message, press OK
3) once you see the program, click the button CREATE
4) You will get another window, enter your email into the E-MAIL section ( you will need a real email)
5) Go to GENERAL SETTINGS, and check PROTECTION FROM….
and press CREATE SERVER.

Now that you’ve finished the hardest part, follow these steps below and you can get hacking.

6) Send the program to a friend, and make sure he/she opens it.
7) Check your email, (junk in needed), and find the “Your victim is online”
Copy and paste the IP address onto ProRat where it says “IP:[127.0.0.1]“
9) Press CONNECT, DO NOT CHANGE THE PORT, if u did change it back to 5110
10) Type in the password (default is usually 123456, it is in the email).
11) Your done, now you can mess with the buttons on the program. Especially the GIVE  DAMAGE button. It will damage their pc by format, and will make the computer useless.

The past week I was quite busy so I had less time for actual gameplay, and instead of leveling too much ahead on my Templar (lvl 24) I played a bit more on my Chanter (lvl 16) in order to catch up to Eero and Rami, since I’m hoping we’ll take on the Abyss and the first instance together once they get closer to lvl 25. I also spent some time digging around how to optimize my client since I was experiencing FPS drops in larger areas even thought my PC isn’t that old. I think every WoW player recalls Shattrah city in Burning Crusade expansion and Dalaran now in Wrath of the Lich King. Both are small towns, where both factions are cropped together in a no-fighting zone full of merchants, banks, battleground NPCs and so on.

Even players with a good PC that could handle raids without problems had disconnects and huge load times if they made the mistake of logging out on such area. Now in Aion the main town of the Elyos is.. well.. vast. It takes few minutes to run from end to end, and the NPCs are scattered throughout the whole town so at first it feels like a nuisance to travel back and forth.

After you get used to the idea, it doesn’t bother you that much, that and the fact that there is a teleporter statue in the city, making it easy to travel to the far side and back. In the end it’s good that NCSoft opted to make the city big, it helps people with slower PCs and eases the lag, when they can divide the town into segments so theres less strain on the server. Still the auction house and banking area can get quite crowded, especially on the evenings when majority of the player base is logged in. I found that theres a hotkey to disable other players, so that you only see nametags floating in the air. CTRL+F12 and poof, quite an FPS increase. This is something that I imagine every big MMO should have, it really makes interacting with the NPCs easier and reduces the strain of your PC.

Like I said before I also dug some info about optimizing the client further. In WoW you could add a few custom commands into your configuration file and reload the game to disable shadows completely etc. Minor tweaks that helped the low-end PCs cope. Now as Aion is based on the Far Cry engine, an engine that was developed for a First Person Shooter game, I thought that perhaps there were more ways to change things rather than tweaking around in the options compartment. I found a way to manipulate the configuration file in the Aion folder to enable console, so now I could tweak Anisotropic Filtering and Triple-Buffering for example, two important things that are missing in the options window for some reason. I also found out you can tweak FOV (Field of Vision) via the in-game console (accessed by Pause Break key after enabling it). I switched the FOV value to 90 from the default 60 and after doing so I’ve no longer had patrols surprising me behind my back since I don’t have to sporadically jack my camera back and forth in densely populated areas. If you have a superb PC, you can increase the eye-candy quite a lot via the console, but I won’t go into more detail on how exactly – if you are interested – Google is there for you.

Now, the other thing I discovered was that Aion isn’t a single player game. What I mean is that in most of the casual friendly MMO games you do not have to group up, you can skip some content without it having much of an impact on your gameplay and character developement. As was with WoW, if you knew how to play you could solo most group quests that Blizzard had deemed to need 3 players. Such isn’t the case in Aion, I imagine ranged classes with snares could do to this some point, but it would be both – waste of time and a tad bit too risky. Doing the group quests of the 2nd zone (Verteron) with two other players took us a hefty 3 hours and brought each of us almost two full levels. The mobs also dropped a lot of gear for us, and the rewards of the campaign quests were really good. On top of that, there was some good lore that kept the whole thing interesting. It’s a rare condition that I find myself sitting at the PC for 3 straight hours, playing a game without taking as much as a smoke break. Epic.

To cap up the technical mumbo-jumbo, I give props to NCSoft for having Aion in a good shape from the get go. I haven’t experienced any loot bugs or other common oddities that I’ve come accustomed to when trying a MMO that was just launched. There still some rubberbanding and I think the server-side doesn’t update your position as often as it should (cut a corner and the server might think you walked through and rollback your position making you warp back to the corner for example). But all in all, the game is in quite a good technical condition, at least when compared to WoW or Warhammer online launch.

Start menu and tweaks/bug-fixes/polishing.

Case 10 is the last case in this semester’s course of Animation and Interactivity – I’m at the point where I clearly see a game in front of me, fully functional (apart from a menu-system and a retry-function). It feels good to finally be done with the programming, and to finally have a game, even though I’ll need to dig through another semester of programming – but that’s fine, at least I have some ground to stand on when we start fresh over the winter.

Case 10: This is the last case, by now you should have a more or less functioning game and it’s time to add the last bits and bolts to your product. The start menu is vital to any game – in a way like a manual explaining a user how to use your game, how to play it.

Reflection: It’s been three very tough months. I had no idea what a jungle Flash and ActionScript actually is when I first started out with this course, but now I’ve gotten some experience – and it is a nice treat to see and experience all the possibilities that can be had with the usage of Flash and ActionScript in simultation.

I don’t feel anywhere near fully educated in either Flash or ActionScript, but I do at least feel that I by now have a general grasp of both the language and how to animate (be it vector-graphic or pixel-graphic). This is a good feeling in itself. What makes this feeling even better is that I, with some help from a good course and good friends, have developed a platform game! It even works, and it is quite fun if I can say so myself.

Difficulties:

• Introducing more classes, that needs to communicate with the main-class
• Figuring out how buttons work, and how this can be included in running a function
• Cleaning the game after the player has died
• Restarting the game when the player retry

I just noticed that there is yet another location in the Buddy Press core where blogging functions are used and that is in the search bar type box:

Since on this platform there is only going to be the 1 blog which controlled entirely by admin then there’s no need to offer the function of searching for all blogs on the platform. To remove this code then we need to open the file; “wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-templatetags.php” and remove the following block of code:

This bit of code simply adds the “Blogs” option to the drop down menu if the BB Blogs is installed. So deleting this code removes the option from the menu. If you prefer you can put a ‘#’ symbol to the left of “$Selection_box” which will comment this line out so its not executed but it still remains in the source code for any future use or just for reference purposes. Many programmers like to leave original code in place, which is fine. Whatever!
