Olay's original ad

An Olay advert which features Britain’s favourite old dear, Twiggy has been banned from magazine because it’s had over 700 complaints.

Advertising Standards Authority has binned the magazine advert after it received two complaints because the advert was misleading because it had been digitally retouched. MP Jo Swinson then forwarded 700 more complaints which were gathered via her anti-airbrushing web campaign.

The advert features Twiggy promoting Procter & Gamble-owned Olay Definity eye illuminator. Alongside her picture a quote reads: “Olay is my secret to brighter-looking eyes. Because younger-looking eyes never go out of fashion … reduces the look of wrinkles and dark circles for brighter, younger-looking eyes,” the ad continued.

Those who complained, according to the Guardian said that the ad could have a “negative impact on people’s perceptions of their own body image”.

MP Jo Swinson posted on her site: “I hope this decision marks the first step in really getting airbrushing in advertising under control. If advertisers think that someone as beautiful as Twiggy needs to be so heavily airbrushed, the what hope is there for the rest of us

“Experts have already proved that airbrushing contributes to a host of problems in women and young girls such as depression and eating disorders,” she adds.

The paper reported that in its ruling, the ASA said it considered the Photoshop-ing of the ad, in the eye area could give consumers a “misleading impression of the effect the product could achieve”. (Like the Dove beauty campaign I posted about!)

The ASA said denied that the ad was socially irresponsible and stated: “We concluded that, in the context of an ad that featured a mature model likely to appeal to women of an older age group, the image was unlikely to have a negative impact on perceptions of body image among the target audience and was not socially irresponsible.”

P&G argued that there would always be an obvious difference between unflattering paparazzi pictures and professional beauty photos.

Covers eyes for a reason perhaps...

The company added it was “routine practice to use post-production techniques to correct for lighting and other minor photographic deficiencies before publishing the final shots as part of an advertising campaign”.

P&G also added that the retouching around Twiggy’s eyes was inconsistent with its own policies. It had caused the company to withdraw the original advert and replace it with one without post-production work around the eyes, opting for a more natural image.

Quick props to Salon’s Broadsheet for an incisive analysis of the UK’s decision to ban this heavily-airbrushed Olay eye cream ad, but not to regulate heavy photo retouching more generally.

Having worked at fashion magazines (where before/after Photoshop exercises such as this litter photo department walls), I always sort of assume that everyone knows that the pictures you see in such places are all faked up. That is not the case. Last week, we hopped on sephora.com to check out their latest “Express Service” makeup lesson offerings, and the class contemplated this:

I’m no expert, but I’m willing to bet good money that every one of those photos has undergone the Photoshop magic, to ensure the light hits the Perfect Pout just right, to remove any trace of redness from the Smoky Eye, and to smooth out the planes on the High-Definition Makeup model’s face. But Miss Jenny didn’t see it. “Look how flawless that foundation is!” she exclaimed.

Now Miss Jenny is an expert. She knows makeup and knows what it can and can’t do. And of course, she knows about Photoshop and it’s ability to shave away pounds and under-eye circles. But I think there’s something sort of primal about the fact that when we look at a beautiful photo, seeing is believing — and we really, really want to believe.

So it pretty much sucks that beauty advertisers seem so happy to take full advantage of that fact.

Let’s face it the older you get the more your body changes and for some wrinkles do too. While some women age more gracefully than others, with the help of technology anyone can look twenty-something again.

What 60 year old Caucasian woman do you know of that doesn’t have any wrinkles?

Oil of Olay known as Olay now needs to be shot for erasing her fine lines to promote their latest product. Olay probably thinks that women are going to fly into the drugstores to grab this product to look like Twiggy. Shame on you Olay. Consumers are way to savvy and they would probably sell more product if they were honest.

These ads have already been banned in England and I must say I don’t blame them.

Most men get caught up in the magazines and truly believe that these women look the way they are pictured in these magazines unless that are in the business. But marketers have to realize and accept the fact that men are not the ones buying these beauty products.

2009 was definitely the year of Photoshop! To check out this story and to see the images that were banned click here http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/beauty/twiggys-photoshopped-olay-ads-banned-in-england-554961/

The fashion industry has a lot to answer for. I may have posted on this before. In fact I did from t

The fashion industry has a lot to answer for. I may have posted on this before. In fact I did from the perspective of the fashion designer who used “plus-size” models for a show. Those supposed plus sizes were between size 8 and 12, hardly plus at all and normal for most women.

Well, I also came across the following article by a writer. who dressed in a fat suit to attend several fashion shows. The attitudes about skeletal models and towards overweight people that she experienced just highlights the unrealistic world of fashion. The writer, Kate Faithtfull, is normally a size 10-12 and that would be too fat for being a model. Yet, if you look at her picture, beside one of her in the fat suit, she looks perfectly healthy.

As a child with an eating disorder and therefore a pudgy exterior, I have well experienced the attitudes of people to those not of normal size. Interestingly, when I look back on those pictures of me as a teenager I was pretty near normal size. I have a European, peasant body and will never be stick thin without serious surgery to remove calf muscle from my large, overdeveloped calves (finding high boots is nearly impossible and women with smaller calves than me have problems too), as well as trimming the hips and thighs down to a size I’ve never seen on my body. I’m sturdy, I have childbearing hips and I will always be curvy. I wear between a size 8 and a size 10, even with this shape.

Now Faithfull padded her body out to size 22 and found some clothes to wear, commenting that it was a good thing her breasts were foam because she’d have trouble finding a bra otherwise. Her male friends were more intrigued by the curves and yes, men often like more curvy women. Black men especially seem to like a woman with some “junk in her trunk.”

Now in recent years that crept up. I was no longer a small in my tops, going to a medium. My size 10 pants were too tight to do up. I should say here that there are a whole host of pants/jeans, which could be size 14 and I would still not be able to get them over my calves. Many jeans that I can get over my hips are then far too big in the waist, because, yes, I’m curvy. It’s not easy for many women whose proportions are not the 36-24-36 proportions to get clothes, though I would argue these days the measurements are more like 36-28-32. At my smallest I 34-22-38.

The fashion industry was never selling to me and I’m not sure who they sell to with their stick thin models in size 2, which a very small majority of any population can wear. Most women are between size 8-14. Many wear larger than that. Just by dint of being tall, can pop you up a size or too.

When I got into watching the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show I was made even more uncomfortably aware of my size by all the teeny women. Willow and Buffy were diminutive, yet Tara was more of a normal size. I’m sure some people thought she was fat but she wasn’t and I bet she wore a size 8 or smaller. After all, she said she weighed around 118 lbs and is around 5.5″. That’s not much weight for that height. Between Hollywood and the fashion world, people are freaked out about being 120 or 150 lbs when those are more natural ranges for people from 5.4 to 5.8. I don’t have the national average in front of me but I know many women who weigh 140-150 who don’t look fat at all.

What hit me over the year or two was that my clothes weren’t fitting. With a great deal of effort (a natural, balanced diet and working out 3-4 times a week) I’ve lost around 20 lbs this year. I think I could lose another 20 though the doctor says 10 maybe 15. We’ll see but I can say now that even if I lose that weight I’ll still have hips and big calves. It’s the way I’m built and it would take a truly anorexic frame to eliminate this and I’d be getting rid of muscle mass.

It’s hard being in a culture that ridicules people for being fat yet seems to reward those who starve themselves. Marilyn Monroe would be fat by today’s standards and she’s still a sex symbol. Oddly the model Twiggy, presenting an anorexic shape in the 60s that took the fashion world by storm (why, I still don’t know) started a trend that doesn’t seem to have ended. I’ll work always at being healthy but give me the Selma Hayeks and Sophia Lorens over Callista Flockhart and Twiggy. Curvy is healthier.

Daytime temperatures are predicted to plummet below freezing today with sub-zero conditions lasting into the weekend.Biting winds will make it seem even colder in many places. Forecaster Jonathan Powell, from Positive Weather Solutions, said overnight temperatures could feel more like minus 10C in some areas. He said: “Scandinavian air will push across Britain, bringing some sharp frosts, icy roads, and when coupled with an area of rain, snow flurries too.

“To the North, just above freezing by day, but overnight with the wind chill factor added in, it will plummet down to minus 10C(14F).“The South too will not escape, edging just above freezing by day, but well below by night, and with the wind chill factor, it will feel more like minus 8C(18F).”The cold snap is caused by a freezing weather system moving across the North Sea from Siberia.Sleet and heavy snow are due to start falling in Yorkshire, Humber, East Midlands and north-east England tomorrow with drivers facing deep snow in the North-east.

As the freezing cold front moves south on Friday morning Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire face snow falls of up to four inches.Places as far inland as Birmingham could see below-freezing temperatures on Friday with it barely getting above zero for most of the rest of the country.A spokeswoman for the Met Office said: “This cold weather has originated from Russia. Snow will hit the east of England but the whole country will have freezing and near freezing temperatures. The maximum over Thursday and Friday for a lot of the country will be 2C and overnight that could fall to minus 4C.

“The east of the country will see most of the snow, the rest of the country will be near freezing.” The cold snap has brought a flurry of bets on there being a white Christmas. Aberdeen is rated the most likely place to have snow on Christmas Day. For London the odds were 9/2 yesterday.Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg said: “The falling temperature has seen interest in a white Christmas go through the roof. If the gamble continues we could conceivably offer our shortest ever price in the build-up to the big day.”Met Office chief forecaster Frank Saunders said: “It is still too early to say what it will be like on Christmas Day itself. Eastern parts of England will have the greatest covering but places further west could see a little snow too.”Mr Powell said: “A white Christmas remains a distinct possibility… Somewhere it will snow on Christmas Day.”

Olay rapped over Twiggy’s lying eyes: Advert banned for retouching 60-year-old model

According to the advertisement featuring a smiling Twiggy: ‘Olay is my secret to brighter-looking eyes.’Sadly, for those encouraged to try the same anti-ageing cream as the 60-year-old model, there was also another secret – some hidden help from the airbrush.Today the advert is criticised by watchdogs for giving a false impression of the benefits of Olay Regenerist Definity eye illuminator.

Spot the difference: Twiggy at a fashion awards last year, and as she appears in the Olay advert

Text in the magazine advert said: ‘Because younger-looking eyes never go out of fashion. Olay Definity eye illuminator. Reduces the look of wrinkles and dark circles for brighter, younger-looking eyes.’However, the picture had been airbrushed to soften the wrinkles around Twiggy’s eyes. Critics said they could not believe the image was genuine, particularly when set against other photos of the model. The advertisement triggered more than 700 complaints, led by LibDem MP Jo Swinson, who has called for the banning of airbrushing in advertising. She said: ‘If advertisers think that someone as beautiful as Twiggy needs to be so heavily airbrushed, then what hope is there for the rest of us?

‘Experts have proved airbrushing contributes to a host of problems in women and young girls such as depression and eating disorders.’Today the Advertising Standards Authority says in a ruling: ‘The post-production retouching of this ad, specifically in the eye area, could give consumers a misleading impression of the effect the product could achieve.’However, it added that most older women would understand that Twiggy’s youthful appearance was not solely achieved by using the Olay product.Procter & Gamble, which makes Olay, said the ‘minor retouching’ had been inconsistent with its policies and it had already replaced the image with one with ‘no postproduction work in the eye area’.

Burial cloth found in Jerusalem cave casts doubt on authenticity of Turin Shroud

Archaeologists have discovered the first known burial shroud in Jerusalem from the time of Christ’s crucifixion – and say it casts serious doubt on the claimed authenticity of the Turin Shroud.Ancient shrouds from the period have been found before in the Holy Land, but never in Jerusalem.Researchers say the weave and design of the shroud discovered in a burial cave near Jerusalem’s Old City are completely different to the Turin Shroud.

Discovery: The shrouded body of a man was found in this sealed chamber of a cave in the Hinnom Valley, overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem

Radiocarbon tests and artefacts found in the cave prove almost beyond doubt that it was from the same time of Christ’s death. It was made with a simple two-way weave – not the twill weave used on the Turin Shroud, which textile experts say was introduced more than 1,000 years after Christ lived. And instead of being a single sheet like the famous item in Turin, the Jerusalem shroud is made up of several sections, with a separate piece for the head.Professor Shimon Gibson, the archaeologist who discovered the tomb, said ancient writings and contemporary shrouds from other areas had suggested this design, and the Jerusalem shroud finally provided the physical evidence.

The debate over the Turin Shroud will not go away. Last month a Vatican researcher said she had found the words ‘Jesus Nazarene’ on the shroud, proving it was the linen cloth which was wrapped around Christ’s body.

Tests: DNA analysis of the fibres of the Jerusalem shroud, have revealed it dates back to the time of Christ’s death. Experts say it casts doubt on the authenticity of the Turin Shroud.

Barbara Frale said computer analysis of photographs of the shroud revealed extremely faint words written in Greek, Aramaic and Latin which attested to its authenticity. But the shroud-wrapped body dated to the time of Christ discovered in Jerusalem seems to point in the opposite direction. The shroud was found around the remains of a man in a sealed chamber of a burial cave in the Hinnom Valley overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem by archaeologists from the Hebrew University and the Albright Research Institute, both in Jerusalem.

DNA tests indicated the man had suffered from leprosy and died of tuberculosis. That was probably why his burial cave was sealed – a move that preserved the shroud and even some of the man’s hair for 2,000 years.

Professor Gibson said the Turin Shroud did not fit what was known of burial practices in first-century Palestine – now confirmed by the Jerusalem shroud.’The Turin shroud is a single sheet made with a twill weave. The twill weave is known from this part of the world only from the mediaeval period, so we’re talking about something that’s from the Middle Ages,’ Gibson told the Daily Mail.’But the Jerusalem shroud confirmed another local practice which casts even more doubt on the Turin artefact.’It wasn’t one continuous sheet,’ said Gibson, pointing out the Turin Shroud is a single rectangular sheet measuring about 14ft by 3ft.’What our shroud shows is that the practice of having a separate shroud or wrapping for the body and for the head was common practice.’There was a separate wrapping for the head itself, which was very important because when they brought someone to burial they would place the head wrapping separately on the face in case the person wasn’t actually dead and woke up again, they would be able to blow off the face wrapping and shout for help,’ said Gibson.

Evidence: Archaeologist Shimon Gibson, centre, said tests had revealed the man suffered from leprosy and died from tuberculosis’This did occur quite a lot in antiquity because they didn’t have the medical means we have today.’The idea was that if you enshrouded somebody, you had a separate set of wrappings for the body and a separate set of wrappings for the head,’ he said.Ancient rabbinical writings mention people who woke up, apparently miraculously and lived for years afterwards. It was the custom at the time for the family to visit the tomb after three days to check their relative was indeed dead.Gibson said this was probably the source of the Gospel story about Jesus’s followers visiting his tomb three days after the Crucifixion, when they found it empty.

The Hinnom Valley where the Jerusalem shroud was discovered has long been associated with death. The Gospel of Matthew calls it Akeldama or ‘Field of Blood.’It is dotted with Roman-era burial tombs carved out of caves in the rock face.In ancient times, pagan tribes burned children alive there as offerings to the god Moloch. The ancient Israelites called the valley Gehinnom – the Hebrew for ‘Hell’ – and it was the site where the scapegoat was driven over a cliff on the Day of Atonement in Solomon’s Temple.

Whitehall’s £8m stress ball splurge: Ministers lavish cash on promotional gimmicks

More than £8million of taxpayers’ money is being spent on goods such as cakes, stress balls and Frisbees decorated with government propaganda messages.Only a week after Gordon Brown promised to slash spending on marketing, Whitehall officials have unveiled new contracts for ‘vanity marketing’ projects. The money will go towards buying items such as umbrellas, mouse mats, beanie hats and even food branded with the logos of quangos and Whitehall departments. One company awarded the right to produce branded food specialises in making sticky cupcakes.Ministers and the heads of government-funded agencies will also be able to buy mugs, aprons and balloons decorated with advertising slogans and messages promoting official initiatives. The Tories last night expressed their anger that new contracts have been awarded so soon after the Pre-Budget Report in which everyone earning over £20,000 a year was told they would have to pay more in National Insurance contributions to plug the soaring deficit.Details of the companies selected to provide the branded goods were slipped out on Monday by the Central Office of Information, the government agency that co-ordinates government publicity campaigns. That was exactly a week after Mr Brown promised a ’smarter government’ initiative to cut costs and ‘put the frontline first’.The Prime Minister vowed to halve Whitehall spending on consultancy work, and reduce spending on marketing by a quarter – saving £650million a year in all.

The Government’s total spending on public relations, marketing and advertising reached £540million last year, with Mr Brown spending £202million more than in Tony Blair’s last year in Downing Street. The contracts announced on Monday are worth £8million and run for the next three years.Shadow Cabinet Office Minister Nick Hurd said: ‘Gordon Brown’s cupcake contract will be too much for taxpayers to stomach.’Within a week, his pledge to put the frontline first has been exposed as an utter sham.’It is outrageous that Labour ministers are hiking taxes on hard-working families to pay for this vanity marketing.’Gordon Brown has lost the plot by his spending spree on Government-branded aprons and beanie hats.’A COI spokesman said: ‘COI does not order cupcakes. Our promotional items are practical everyday items that support government conferences and campaigns on important issues such as armed forces recruitment.’The contract is worth around £3million per year. We buy directly from trade sources helping save between 20 and 60 per cent on market rates.’By bringing together marketing spend across government in 2008-9, COI helped save £290million.’

Details of the spending on branded goods come as the National Audit Office today questions Labour’s claims to have made efficiency savings in government.A hard-hitting report by the spending watchdog reveals that as much as 34 per cent of reported savings by the Department for Transport have been ’significantly overstated’.The NAO also says it has ’significant concerns’ over 17 per cent of savings at the Home Office.

Police breathed life into the newborn moments after they arrived to arrest the mother on outstanding warrants, officers said on Tuesday. Two street crimes police officers happened to arrive on the bloody bathroom scene on Sunday afternoon, a few seconds after the 32-year-old woman gave birth squatting over a toilet. One of the officers plucked the unresponsive baby boy from the water-filled toilet bowl and began CPR, eventually getting the infant to breathe on its own.Heather Richard, unaware that she was pregnant and startled by the birth of her first child, had gone into the washroom with severe pain in her abdomen. The baby “just fell out,” she told the daily Winnipeg Sun. “I thought it was my intestines, so I’m freaking out.”"But then it’s a little boy,” she said. The boy, weighing five pounds, nine ounces, was taken to hospital in critical condition, having suffered a skull fracture, most likely when his head struck the toilet.Police told AFP the newborn was now in stable condition in hospital and was expected to recover, while the mother would be asked to deal with the theft charges at a later date.”I’m still in shock. I’m not supposed to have kids,” Miss Richard told the Sun, explaining that she had suffered three miscarriages and was told by doctors that she would not be able to conceive.

Dede, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, returned home from hospital in August after six kilos of warts were surgically removed from his body and has been treated as an out-patient since.

“Those (warts) that were removed are growing again and started to reappear after I returned home,” he said, adding that for a time he could go fishing and use a cell phone but now needed assistance again for such activity. An American doctor has previously said the warts were the result of severe Human Pappiloma Virus (HPV) infection, but the disease is not life-threatening. Doctors say his case is thought to be the worst of its type in the world. The Discovery Channel recently made a documentary about Dede’s affliction and his life.Dede, 37, first noticed the warts on his body after cutting his knee as a teenager.Over time, Dede was sacked from his job, deserted by his wife and shunned by neighbours as the horn-like extensions covered much of his body and stopped him working. He has two children.”I’m not desperate but I want to recover,” he added, speaking from his home in the remote West Java village of Tanjung Jaya.An Indonesian doctor said he would have further operations at the end of December or early next year to remove and reduce warts.”We have told him that his disease could not be 100 per cent cured. In the previous operation, we only tried to increase his quality of life,” said Rachmat Dinata, one of a team of doctors treating him at the Hasan Sadikin hospital in Bandung, a city near his village.Dinata said he would need at least two operations every year. For a while, Dede was forced to take part in a circus act in Bandung in order to make ends meet. But after his case received widespread publicity, donations from the public and allowed him to get treatment.government helpHe has also been able to buy some land to grow rice and a second-hand car so his relatives can bring him to hospital.

”Olay is my secret to brighter-looking eyes.” Well, it would seem that’s not all

”Olay is my secret to brighter-looking eyes.” Well, it would seem that’s not all Twiggy. After 700 complaints gathered by Liberal Democrat Jo Swindon in a campaign against air-brushing in advertising, The Advertising Standards Authority has banned Twiggy’s latest print ad for Olay Definity eye illuminator. In its ruling, it said “the post-production retouching of this ad, specifically in the eye area, could give consumers a misleading impression of the effect the product could achieve.’ However, it rejected the claim that the advert was “socially irresponsible” as

“We considered that consumers were likely to expect a degree of glamour in images for beauty products and would therefore expect Twiggy to have been professionally styled and made-up for the photo shoot, and to have been photographed professionally. We concluded that, in the context of an ad that featured a mature model likely to appeal to women of an older age group, the image was unlikely to have a negative impact on perceptions of body image among the target audience and was not socially irresponsible.”

Proctor & Gamble which manufacture Olay have said that they have already replaced the ad with an image that has “ no post production work in the eye area.”

No doubt, everyone will be keeping a look out to see whether Twiggy does have “younger-looking eyes” or whether she too is susceptible to under eye bags and wrinkles. Mmmm I wonder! Yes this advert is airbrushed but what isn’t now-a-days? Even university graduation photo shoots now come with an (more exspensive) option to have yourself and your proud parents/guardians smoothed, brightened and teeth whitened. What I want to know though is will people be happier with Twiggys non-altered image or will they simply criticise her for well, being natural? For not having perfect child-like skin, for having visible pores, for having crows legs, laughter lines and wrinkles? Will sales of Olay fall, not because Twiggy has lines, so therefore the product musn’t work but, because Twiggy has lines and therefore, the appeal of trying to achieve the impossible act of looking like perfection is lost. Because surely you must be mad to want to look errr normal?

Ever have that moment when, in the middle of your daily daydreams during English, you think about yo

Ever have that moment when, in the middle of your daily daydreams during English, you think about your current situation and say to yourself: wow, what happened? So describes my life in one verbose sentence.

Why do people grow apart? Is it because of the lack of mutual class periods? No, class has never been an issue in the past. Is it because of the differences in extracurricular activities? But all was fine before… Inevitably, we all have to agree that people grow apart. As for why, it’s possible that no one will ever know. But I’d like to think that maybe it’s just the introduction of new people into and out of our lives.

It’s so strange how people change their personalities according to who they spend time with the most. Once-quiet mathies turn into boisterous bandheads. Once-humble individuals become giggling narcissists. Their goals and plans are set aside, pushed into dark corners, never to be found again. What once seemed like a bright future full of opportunities and chances becomes a bleak tomorrow with little expectation… or hope. People become self-destructive as they take hold of whatever they can get, manipulating their hearts into believing that these sacrifices are made in the name of love.

To love, to like, and to lust… The terms are so closely related; to a certain point they are synonymous. Lust, however, is very different from love or like. This very difference is what sets it apart as a deadly sin. To love or like someone is to have affectionate and true feelings toward him or her. To lust for someone is to have a strong-but-shallow desire for him or her; life completely revolves around this person. Lust destroys our priorities, crushes our relationships, hides our problems, and fabricates our lives. The most catastrophic element of lust is its ability to perform calamitous acts covertly without the slightest warning.

What about the friends in the lives of these misguided people? Who, if not them, can save from the wrath of lust? I used to believe that I could depend on my friends to help rescue me from these traps. But as I reflect on the people in my life, I realize that not many of them have been nor will ever be here for me. I know people who would like to know every intricate detail about everything, but when it comes down to it, they’re too preoccupied with their own problems to be of any help at all.

But to be fair, I have to agree that when people try to help us in this state, it’s highly unlikely that we listen to what’s good for us. We push others away, believing that they only want to harm us. So what do you do when someone you love is making a huge mistake and refuses to listen to your side of the matter? What do you do when you know you’re fighting against someone you can’t beat?

You fight silently. The war isn’t over, and a little loss of pride won’t end it. Draw up the white flag, abandon ship, and find a new crew. But this little battle? It’s not over until you say it is.

London’s made up of many villages each with their own character and style. It’s one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world and I’ve been taste-testing the food of different ethnic groups. Try Lebanese delights in Edgware Road, Chinese food right next to Soho and Indian food in Brick Road, and Brixton for some Caribbean or African flavours – whatever your tastes, it’s available.

You know the big tourist destinations (see links below) but what about places and events that are less well known: many free. For me it’s the green spaces that make London wonderful: large swathes of uncut grasses are left to flower and seed – attracting butterflies, insects, birds and other wildlife - these contrast with the manicured parts and the ‘keep off the lawn’ signs. Wandering around these parks is a real treat – it’s hard to believe one is in one of the world’s largest cities. Take a picnic lunch and spend time in Greenwich Park that has the meridian time-line, observatory and Maritime Museum, and superb views over much of London and the Thames.

Experience nature in the city at Barnes in West London – home to the Wetlands Centre – both resident and migratory birds are easily seen. Check the website or phone for special activities.

Within the city there self guided walks – with free maps –around well-known icons of London and other fascinating places along the way. London is a good walking city and the tube also gets you around easily.

Markets are another superb way of seeing Londoners at work and play. With more than three hundred to chose from there is something for all tastes - Greenwich for arts and crafts, Petticoat Lane for a variety of goodies, Spitalfields for flower lovers and Covent Garden for British made articles. Brixton even has a guided walking tour around the area and markets Camden’s my favourite for its alternative-lifestyle atmosphere and Borough is the place for fabulous food. Open on Fridays and Saturdays you can buy anything from organic food through to black bean chilli, oils and olives, ostrich burgers, cheeses and chocolates – a veritable cornucopia.

Explore Hampstead and its cemetery (Archway Station Northern Line) – one of London’s most celebrated literary and intelligentsia suburbs. This area has more ‘blue plaques’ celebrating its residents than any other London borough: these range from John Keats, Boy George, AA Milne, and Agatha Christie through to Richard Burton, George Orwell, Freud, Twiggy and many others.

The Highgate cemetery (guided tours daily) is divided into two; the West Side is sentimental Victorian – when people didn’t die but were merely sleeping. The East part is still being used: buried within its walls are Karl Marx, George Elliot, Christine Rossetti and Michael Faraday, to name a few. The headstones make interesting reading and are wonderful for atmospheric or spooky, black and white photography.

So once you have seen some shows, once you have done the museums (mostly free) and art galleries, and once you have completed the top ten sights, buy a travel card and explore the many unheralded jewels in this ancient city.

Here is a list of London’s top 10 attractions – including some which are free.

Influenciados pelo livro “On the Roa

The Beatles

Twiggy

inside Nov. 09 British Vogue

The new Kate Moss is Brazilian. The first time I spotted her was in Nylon’s October 2007 issue, featured as a rising star. Alice Dellal’s wild hair cut and foreign features caught my eye. I also noticed Dellal was not as leggy as the average editorial model. Still, the camera captured a strong presence and spirit.

I came across Dellal again in this month’s British Vogue. She has graced the pages of other magazines including Dazed & Confused, French Vogue, and L’Officiel. At only 5′5”, the Brazilian rebel has been deemed the new Kate Moss. This title is fitting as Dellal has been seen out on the town with questionable company partaking in questionable activities not unlike Moss did in her youth. Last year she replaced Moss as the new face of Agent Provocateur. Dellal’s style is also similar to the 90’s grunge of Kate Moss. She champions cut off denim, floral minidresses, and chunky shoes.

Dellal is currently London’s it girl. The boss of Britain’s fashion scene, i-D magazine, has shot 12 different covers, each featuring one of the “Best British Models.” Dellal will make her official British debut with her cover. The 12 models also include legends Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Twiggy as well as newcomers Agyness Deynand Jourdan Dunn.

Dellal was famous before she was famous. Her mother is Brazilian model Andrea Dellal and her father is a millionaire and bodyguard to the stars. Her friends include Pixie Geldof and Daisy Lowe, two of my favorite British models/socialites. The three recently left Select Model Management to sign with Next. It’s rumored Select was not a fan of the girls’ hard partying. But girls will be girls. One of the biggest perks of fashion modeling is the social scene.

What I love most about this girl is her personal style. The way people dress in their down time speaks mountains about a person. Dellal pulls off the fierce haircut, combat boots, and leather details on the daily. “I like my style. If people don’t like my hair, then they don’t have to book me,” Dellal said on Vogue.com. But it looks like that hair cut will be landing her a cover sometime soon.

“When I was seven, I caught my reflection in a spoon and though, ’Wow! I‘m ridiculously good-looking.‘”- Dellal in Nylon, Oct. 07

beijooooooooos
