“Don’t you just love goodbyes?”

From my boat, i can see your house
And when the lights are on
I can watch you move
Hear the wind whispering your name
Twice the encouragement of the real you

Callie, if you really want me to
I can always get you down
If you got the money for me
Callie, in the summer rain
You and me can dry, you see
If you got the money for me

Making amends for distant wrongs, sincere

You can run away
Leave your books behind you
But you should look back twice
Just to be on the safe side

From my boat i can see your house
But now the lights are off
There’s no one home

You are just like an avalanche
Cold as I might have guessed
But at least I’m covered up for now

In a big big way i am really small
I get off my feet but i’m still distant

Don’t you just love goodbyes?
Don’t you just love goodbyes?

Callie, let us get it over with
I can always get you down
If you’ve got the money for me
Callie in the summer rain
You and me can dry, you see
If you’ve got the money for me

Most of our lives we try so hard to find the time

I won’t care for you
Like I’m really supposed to
There are things I’ll do
That could really hurt you

Don’t you just love goodbyes?
Don’t you just love goodbyes?
156
Don’t you just love goodbyes?

2. THE XX – NIGHT TIME

“We’ll talk about it soon”

You mean that much to me and it’s hard to show
It gets hectic inside of me when you go
Can I confess these things to you
Well I don’t know
Embedded in my chest and it hurts to hold

I couldn’t spill my heart
My eyes gleam looking in from the dark
I walk out in stormy weather
Hope my words keep us together
Steady walking but bound to trip
Should release but just tighten my grip

Night time
Sympathize
I’ve been working on white lies
So I’ll tell the truth
I’ll give it up to you
And when the day comes it will all have been fun
We’ll talk about it soon

And I couldn’t spill my heart
My eyes gleam looking in from the dark
I walk out in stormy weather
Hope my words keep us together
Steady walking but bound to trip
Should release but just tighten my grip

3. TWILIGHT SINGERS – FORTY DOLLARS

mangy dog without a collar, buy me love for forty dollars
i got love for sale, come on get some before it gets stale
now, love don’t mean a thing, but 2am and a telephone ring

love is all you need, and all you need is love
love is all you need, and all you need is love
we go underground, cos there’s emptiness above
she loves you yeah-yeah-yeah
she loves you yeah-yeah-yeah
she loves you yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah

i’m just bein’
i’m just bein’
i’m just bein’
i’m just bein’
honest

4. THE NATIONAL – BRAINY

“You might need me more than you think you will”

I’ve been draggin around from the end of your coat for two weeks
Everywhere you go is swirlin, everything you say has water under it

You know I keep your fingerprints in a pink folder in the middle of my table
You’re the tall kingdom I surround
Think I better follow you around

You might need me more than you think you will
Come home in the car you love, brainy brainy brainy

I’ve been draggin around from the end of your coat for two weeks
You keep changing you’re fancy fancy mind every time I decide to let go

I was up all night again, boning up and reading the American dictionary
You’ll never believe me what I found
Think I better follow you around

You might need me more than you think you will
Come home in the car you love, brainy brainy brainy
you might need me more than you think you will
come home in the car you love, brainy brainy brainy

5. LONGWAVE – SIRENS IN THE DEEP SEA

“You’re the only one that can”

I’ve been trying to reach you, oh
I’ve trying to get through, oh
It’s so hard to let you know
I’ve been trying, yes, it’s true, oh

You’re the only one that can
The lonely one again
You’re the only one that can
You are alone

I’ve been swimming in the deep sea
Sirens come up to greet me
But it’s not so good to be

The only one that can
The lonely once again
You’re the only one that can
You are alone

You’re the only one that can
The lonely one again
You’re the only one that can
You are alone

You’re the only one that can
The lonely once again
You’re the only one that can
You are alone
You are alone

Apologies for the late weekend mixtape but i’ve been a busy boy. As many of you will know, this Wednesday past happened to be the 9/9/09. I was going to make a special mixtape up on the Wednesday to commemorate this once in a lifetime date. Well, my lifetime anyway, unless i somehow live till September 2109. Anyways, i couldn’t get round to making the mix up on the Wednesday due to more important matters, ie. getting drunk and watching the Scotland vs Holland game round the local watering hole. So i thought to myself “i’ll make it on the Thursday”….but i was too hungover. Friday? Went and seen a friends band playing in Stereo (i’ll post some stuff soon). Saturday? Couldn’t. It’s a long story.
But!……… But! Today i finally got the time to make it. The theme of the mix takes on a 999/Accident & Emergency vibe, so bands and songs that were included had to have that kinda slant to their name. Things along the lines of Police, Ambulance, Criminals, Fire, Accidents etc. Hope you enjoy!

As the twilight hours engulf another perfect Winter’s day here’s a couple of gems to fuel you for the next few hours and transport you into whatever Saturday night may hold for you…

Twilight Singers – Candy Cane Crawl

Quite simply, Greg Dulli embodies Rock’n'Roll… my mind lights up every time I hear this song. Perfect for sipping on a few whiskeys, or whatever else may take your fancy.

The Twilight Sad – And She Would Darken The Memory

Elegant, aching rock from one of Glasgow’s finest. Swirling guitars, tumultuous rhythms and James Graham’s raggedly sentimental lyrics… now where’s that second drink?

Do Gutter, apenas cinco músicas. Algumas belas covers (José González, Bukka White e Nick Drake) completaram o repertório.

Down The Line (José González cover)

No lugar, violão, teclado e vozes.

“There must be some kinda way out of here…”, emendou Lanegan, no final de God’s Children.

Eu vi Mark Lanegan subir naquele palco e cantar.

After having seen him with the Twilight Singers and Gutter Twins repeatedly, I can report that Mr. Dulli could possibly be doing one or all of the following from the stage: smoking 3 or 4 cigs at the same time, sweating profusely, grinning like he stole money from the collection plate, delaying the start of the concert 2 hrs because 9pm is too early for a denizen of the night to start working, singing as if he were at the Crossroads trying to save his soul.
Greg walks on the dark side of things without really coming off as evil. He is a congenial host who will smile pleasantly before lighting into a songs about ladies of the night and drugs all the while gulping on almond colored liquor. The givens are that his band is always tight, that Mark Lanegan is always hunching in the shadows waiting to waiting to slow the pace with his guttural whiskey wisened vocals and that a religious experience will be had by all. At all three concerts they played well past 2am, which is probably their optimal high energy time of day. The crowds at all the shows were well behaved and it doesn’t hurt that Dulli doesn’t have a “radio” song, so there can’t possibly be a neophyte in the crowd requesting one. The leers and grunts from the stage, which are abound at Greg’s shows, send the audience into a communal roar. The mere strains of the beginnings of songs elicit cat calls and howls from everyone looking up at the stage littered with candelabras. The audience is picking up on the Dulli vibe and responding in like kind.
And then Dulli and company are off to the next town where all of this will happen again. Greg will proudly strut up to the mic and wonder loudly whether “tonight’s” crowd will be louder than the one in the last town…and Mr. Dulli will have them eating out of his hand from the start and the only real question is, how far down will he lead them?

Greg Dulli e Mark Lanegan

No início do ano passado, eles lançaram seu segundo trabalho, Sunday At The Devil Dirt.

Isobel Campbell e Mark Lanegan

Tonight Aquarium Drunkard poses the following question: “In the ’00s, who is our Steely Dan?” I couldn’t think of a single band, so I googled it. I found someone on this site who claims that the Norwegian Band called The Norwegian Fords sounds like the Dan. Well, not really. They do list Steely Dan as an influence, but they remind me more of Rupert Holmes. I found a message board that puts up Twilight Singers, the band that Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli formed after they broke up, as the heirs apparent to the sound of Steel. I sure don’t hear it. Maybe the Scottish band Deacon Blue? If they don’t sound like Steely Dan, at least they took their name straight from the source. We could go the tribute band route and throw out Naked Lunch (from right here in Dallas, TX) for your review.

Anyway, I’ll keep looking, AD. For now, let’s go with the real deal. One of my all-time favorite SD songs is “Peg.” Here it is, done up in blueprint blue with a tribute video:

I know its Valentines Day tomorrow and i don’t want to dampen the mood for people but seen as today is Friday the 13th i’ve decided to put a post up for those that are unlucky in love. Songs for people that have experienced broken hearts, for people that have broke hearts themselves (everybody has) and for the lots of people who will spend Valentines Day alone this year.

The first bunch of songs are ones of loss, hurt and memories. The usual suspects like Jeff Buckley and Bon Iver are in there but there’s a few others that i thought would fit in quite nice. I’m not Coldplays biggest fan but even i can’t deny “The Scientist” is a touching ode to lost love. The Twilight Singers went for an orchestral background and a boy/girl conversation type song on ”Number Nine”. Whereas “No One’s Gonna Love You” by Band of Horses and “Maps” by the YYY’s are more stripped back but no less haunting. The Postal Service also go for the boy/girl conversation point of view on the ethereal “Nothing Better” whislt managing to keep their trademark bleepy sound. Mystery Jets, Chairlift and Bloc Party bring an indie touch to the mix with tales of bruised love (literally) and broken dreams . Frightened Rabbit’s song about “getting your hole” (as they so delicately put it) offers something a bit more awkward and an altogether different outlook on finding love or thinking you’ve found love. And then there’s the classic break up song by Fleetwood Mac. “Go Your Own Way” was written and recorded just after band members Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks broke up and the tension and emotion is clear for all to hear as they share vocal duties.

The next trio of songs are the polar opposite of the ones above. Instead of getting you down or making you feel sorry for yourself these songs might make you feel better about a break up. From the slightly sarcastic and provoking “I Never Wanted You” by Headphones, right though to the pretty blatant “fuck you” blasts from The Avalanches and McAlmont & Butler.

McAlmont & Butler – Yes

The last song doesn’t really need any description. One of the most simple but moving songs ever. Probably something to do with the fact that Thom Yorkes vocals still sound so fragile when he sings live.

MP3: Radiohead – True Love Waits (live)

And thats it for my first real post. Don’t worry they won’t all be this doomy and gloomy. It just happens to be one of those days today.

Now You Know y el medley de My World Is Empty Without You / I Hear A Symphony son también en directo.

In 2006 ‘Ballad of the broken seas’ en dit jaar ‘Sunday at Devil Dirt’.

The Gutter Twins waren alvast top op Pukkelpop.

UPDATE

In één woord beschreven: superconcert! O.a. ’Deus ibi est’, ‘Ballad of the broken seas’, ‘Seafaring song’, ‘The raven’, ‘Come on over (turn me on)’, ‘Back burner’, ‘The flame that burns’, ‘Keep me in mind sweetheart’ en ’Something to believe’ kwamen voorbij en bij de 4 bisnummers zaten o.a. ‘Revolver’ en ‘Ramblin’ man’.

The Gutter Twins Hit the City on November 7th, so I took the Metro over to the Black Cat club in Northwest DC to see them. Doors opened up at 9:00, and I got there around 9:45. When I got there the scene was pretty empty. I made my way to the front of the stage and settled in for the show.

Afterhours started playing at around 10. For those who do not know of the Italian band, get to know them. They are really good. They started of the night with a cover of “My Time (Has Come)“ They hit us hard with their songs and never let up. It was truly the best opening act I have ever seen. They could headline any other venue, just not when the Gutter Twins are on the same bill.

Afterhours ended at around 1105 and the roadies started to tear down their stuff and get ready for the Gutter Twins. They laid out the setlists

After a few more minutes, the band finally came out and came out rocking with “Idle Hands”. “Seven Stories Underground” was among many highlights as Mark’s vocals seemed to be in top form. the next went to 2004’s hit single “Hit the City” and it was an awe inspiring performance. For “Hard Time Killing Floor,” “Bete Noire” and “Down the Line” Greg Dulli came over rand sat at the Rhodes Piano and the Keyboard which were about three inches from my face, so that was cool.

No zoom was used in that photo. They slowed it way down for “St. James Infirmary Blues”, and let me tell you, when Lanegan sings it, you can feel it. Here is a sampling of the kind of intensity he brings to the table.

The set was a good mix of stuff off of “Saturnalia“, covers, and stuff from their EP “Adorata“. That was really good for me because I have not heard anything off of “Adorata” because it’s an electronic only release and I don’t like not having a physical copy of the records. I enjoyed the songs so much I almost wanted to buy it. I’m not going to until I see a physical copy though.

The highlight of the night, for me, came at the end of the set. “Front Street” was the song. It was Greg Dulli’s first song as a member of “The Gutter Twins” and I know how proud of it he is. He started to sing it and the crowd quickly joined in. By the end of it, he had trouble singing over the crowd and was putting everything he had left into this song. Really amazing. Really cool to be in a place that enjoys music as opposed to the hipster LA scene.

The band went offstage and I had flashbacks to the Avalon concert when they did not come back. I knew this would be different though because we were really into the show and we wanted more. The band was happy to oblige and after no more than two minutes, came back on stage. Mark sang a chilling version of “I Was in Love With You” and we were also joined by the lead singer of Afterhours on keyboards. They continued with “Methamphetamine Blues”. That also rocked the house down. Fittingly, they finished the night with the down-trodden “Number 9″. A somber song that capped off the evening perfectly.

More Pics:

So, with rumours still doing the rounds over a possible Stone Temple Pilots album in 2009, there

So, with rumours still doing the rounds over a possible Stone Temple Pilots album in 2009, there’s the announcement of the imminent release of Scott Weiland’s second solo record.

Happy in Galoshes has been anticipated for quite a while. And since a Rolling Stone article in 2002 I guess we all kinda thought the album would be with us real soon.

The wait is over though. The album will be released on November 25th 2008, however those folks over at Amazon.com have a little surprise for us all.

For more information check out Scott Weiland’s Official Site

The track listing for the album is (according to Amazon):

1. Missing Cleveland
2. Tangle With Your Mind
3. Blind Confusion
4. Paralysis
5. She Sold Her System
6. Fame
7. Killing Me Sweetly
8. Big Black Monster
9. Crash
10. Beautiful Day
11. Pictures & Computers (I’m not Superman)
12. Arch Angel
13. Be Not Afraid

As well as this, Weiland’s Biography, Desperation #5, is also scheduled for an early 2010 release.

This isn’t the only release that has me singing the paises of the music gods.

What!?
Yeah! I know!

In October 2007 Greg Dulli (The Afghan Whigs / Twilight Singers/ The Gutter Twins) played two nights at the Triple Door in Seattle.

As a founding member of The Greg Dulli Appreaciation Society (G Division) and hearing the tracks posted on MySpace, I have been itching to hear the rest of the recordings.

To be honest, I was fearing the worst (along with other Dulli fans) but a release – albeit through iTunes – has been announced for October 28th 2008.

Dulli assembled a cast of musicians including Petra Haden, Shawn Smith (Pigeonhed, Satchel, Brad), Jeff Klein and Barb Antonio to reinterpret - acoustically – some of his finest material.

The highlights from both nights will be included on the digital release:

4. Tell Everyone
5. That’s Just How That Bird Sings

8. Bonnie Brae
9. Tonight
10. Down The Line
11. Front Street

… and I’ll also await the release of Pine / Cross Dover from Masters of Reality. Originally pencilled for an August (and then October) 2008 release, mastersofreality.co.uk has it credited as 2009. Still, it promises to be a crackin album.

My mind is blown and it’s these guys’ fault. In no particular order.

Intramural - This Is A Landslide

Denver Dalley rocks my world. He started out as the second guitarist in Decaparecidos (with Connor Oberst / Bright Eyes) back in the day. He then released an EP and two awesome solo rock-meets-electronica-meets-power-pop albums under the moniker, Statistics. Last year he started a whole bunch of other projects, but Intramural is by far the best in my books. I have absolutely killed this album since I bought it a couple of months ago. Intramural’s debut, “This Is a Landslide” features a collection of songs, covering various styles of electronica mixed with indie. It’s really nice and dreamy, with each song sounding unique, which is probably what I like most about this album. The difference between each song is probably more drastic than you’d usually expect on one album, but that makes it awesome. To top it all off, each track features a different vocalist, ranging from The Velvet Teen to Twilight Singers.

Lights Out Asia - Tanks & Recognizers

I only recently found these guys. I raved about them here as well. They are one of my all-time favourite new bands. Lights Out Asia, in my mind, plays the perfect hybrid of post-rock and electronica. You should check them out, they are amazing and will make you disappear in an instant. Buy this brilliant album here.

Apparat - Walls

Apparat’s previous album, “Duplex” is still one of my favourite electronic albums. “Walls” is newer but both are still absolutely amazing and kind of in the same vein. Oh, by the way, Apparat is Sascha Ring (a really talented German). His beats and percussion is usually extremely complex and glitchy for the most part, but absolutely inspiring. This dude is the king of effectively blending conventional instruments like guitar, piano, horns etc. with various electronic styles and sound-scapes. As if that’s not enough, he has a really good voice. What I love most about Apparat is his diversity, which could be attributed to the fact that some songs have vocals and some songs are instrumental. “Wooden” and “Contradiction” off “Duplex” and “Arcadia” and “Headup” off “Walls” are still some of the most played songs in my “Pretty Songs” playlist. Yay for Apparat!

Telefon Tel Aviv - Map Of What Is Effortless

Then, the latest of my findings, Telefon Tel Aviv. I streamed this album online and was instantly stoked. I bought it on the spot. The perception I got online was that a lot of people liked Telefon Tel Aviv’s debut, “Fahrenheit Fair Enough”, a lot more than this, their latest album, “Map Of What Is Effortless”. I think this album is more to my taste as it seems more diverse and has more vocals compared to the older one (which I’ll probably buy at some point). Anyway, it’s in the same vein as all the bands mentioned above, although I think these dudes don’t use conventional instrumentation as much, it’s a lot more electronic-based, but still really dreamy and pretty. The one guy’s vocals remind me slightly of Antony from Antony and The Johnsons. Bonus

Arc Lab - The Goodbye Radio

Finally, Arc Lab. This dude’s on the same label as Lights Out Asia and also spent a lot of time in my ears of late. I raved about him here as well. I’ve done some online streaming and from what I could hear, everything Arc Lab’s done before this album, was a lot more experimental, weird and ambient. So “The Goodbye Radio” seems like quite a departure, which I am more than happy with. This album is amazing, ranging from instrumental interludes to proper instrumental compositions and songs with male and female vocals. I really like Arc Lab’s structuring, especially the songs with vocals. His use of layering and repetition is really innovative. I think what makes this album so amazing is that Arc Lab took a lot of genres and just flawlessly blended them. I don’t like just ambient, or just instrumental or just glitch electronica – I prefer them mixed and that’s what Arc Lab pulls off beautifully, literally.

En la BSO cuenta con colaboraciones de Clap Your Hand Say Yeah, Death Cab for Cutie, My Morning Jacket, Our Ill Wills o Twilight Singers.

I'd like to be the filling in that sandwich... The Gutter Twins. What a band. Last night I once

I'd like to be the filling in that sandwich...

The Gutter Twins. What a band. Last night I once again had the pleasure of watching these gentlemen do what they do best. As they didn’t play Manchester (boooooo!), I went to the Liverpool gig with my sister.

As usual, I positioned myself mid-right during the support act (crazy singing chick Carina Round) and then when people rushed to the bar/loos, I made my beeline to the front. By the time the Twins came on, I was on the second row with a great view. Mwa ha ha haa! My front-of-gig plan never fails.

If you’ve ever seen Mark Lanegan or Greg Dulli live, you’ll know that Mark clings on to his mic stand for dear life, while Greg is much more active and wiggles himself around to an adoring crowd. I’ve honestly never met a casual fan of either Dulli or Lanegan, it’s always devotion and adoration. Perhaps they are not that well-known in the mainstream, but they have a lot of fans nonetheless.

They might not be your conventionally attractive Brad Pitts or George Clooneys, but I’ve never gone in for that anyway. Don’t get me wrong, the music always comes first for me. The fact that they’re both incredibly sexy is just a bonus. And their sex appeal has probably doubled for me based on my admiration of them musically.

Lanegan is just so brooding and mysterious…and that voice; when he opens his mouth and sings, it sends shivers down your spine. It’s both soothing and unnerving, and is one of the richest, deepest voices you’ll ever hear. Dulli has just got it, and I think he knows he has. His hair and nose do it for me, but that’s another story.

The Gutter Twins’ sound is dark and bluesy and rocky and beautiful in a sort of twisted way. You can see their admiration for each other on stage, I like that a lot.

I’ve met both of them at various points after gigs, Mark a few times and Greg just once. Mark is quiet, polite and a gentleman. Greg is friendly and maybe a little flirty. They were both very obliging with autographs and photos.

It makes me so genuinely happy to watch them live, they’re just one of those special few bands whose music really does it for me. Devotion always has a price though, and I must have lost several pints of fluid via my overwhelming sweatiness in that venue. I had to go and beg the bar at the train station (which was just closing) for some tap water as I was so damn dehydrated. Then I sat on a train for an hour. My poor ears, after an evening of aural delights, now suffering through various out-of-tune Scouse football chants.

All worth it though, of course

ATO Records is proud to announce that the soundtrack to the subversively comedic film Choke, based on the Chuck Palahniuk novel by the same name, will be released on September 23, 2008. The album, a digital-only release, will have the seven songs from the film and eight others that are significant to actor, director and screen writer Clark Gregg’s vision while he was making it. Highlights include previously recorded songs by the likes of Radiohead, Death Cab For Cutie, My Morning Jacket, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Fiery Furnaces, The Twilights Singers and Ben Kweller.

Most notable additions are the previously unreleased or rare tracks that appear on the record, among them “Orgasm Addict” by The Buzzcocks as sung by the band’s original singer Howard Devoto, a great version of The Doors‘ “Crystal Ship” by the incomparable Nicole Atkins and The Sea, and the original version by The Natural History of Spoon’s current hit single “Don’t You Ever.” In a very cool turn of events, the full tracklisting and comments on each song by Gregg are below.

Fox Searchlight Pictures and ATO Pictures present Choke, a Contrafilm/ATO Pictures Production. Actor-turned-director Gregg shows he is as adept behind the camera as he is in front of it with this wickedly comedic tale of Victor Mancini, con artist, sex addict, Colonial village re-enactor, angst-filled son, serial restaurant choke — and unsuspecting romantic antihero for our unsettling times.

Choke, which ran away with the Special Jury Prize for Best Work by an Ensemble Cast at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is not only a cathartic and romantic satire about uncontrolled lust, lost faith, childhood trauma, mad addictions, bizarre fantasies and blockages both emotionally and literally, but also about second chances, redemptive moments and true love – that is, it’s about modern life.

The film will be in theatres on September 26th and features an ensemble cast including Sam Rockwell, Anjelica Huston, Kelly Macdonald, Brad William Henke and Jonah Bobo. Nathan Larson composed the score.

Tracklisting w/ comments by Gregg:
01. Ben Kweller – “The Rules”

Ben Kweller kicks ass. These lyrics feel like Victor Mancini’s rowdy, pissed-off subtext. I love that it starts off the soundtrack with some slamming indie rock and that it comes in during the colonial village while we’re looking at all the puffy shirts and bonnets.

02. The Natural History – “Don’t You Ever” (rare)

I only found this band recently, but I listened to them all through post. Max Tepper’s vocals are superb. I actually prefer this version to the one by Spoon and I’m a huge Spoon fan. The band broke up a few years ago. I’m going to picket their houses until they get back together.

03. Fiery Furnaces – “Navy Nurse”

This groove just takes your breath away.

04. Radiohead – “Reckoner”

Like most people, I am a huge Radiohead fan. The adaptation took me years to write so I wrote it first to Kid A, then Amnesiac and then Hail to the Thief. Later, I learned from Chuck Palahniuk that he had written the novel while listening to their song, “Creep.” In Rainbows came out while we were editing and I used almost every track in my early temp cuts of the movie. They all fit really well, but I particularly loved “Reckoner.” The tension between Thom Yorke’s keening vocals and Phil Selway’s brilliant, driving drum track fit so perfectly that it worked almost like score. I was truly dreading the day when we’d have to take it out. Somehow ATO Pictures producer, Johnathan Dorfman persuaded their manager to show the band some footage and to our shock they were generous enough to let us use the song. It’s a monumental addition to the movie.

05. Alap Momin – “Sin Terror”

I love this jam. We needed music for the strip-club scenes and music supervisors Lyle Hysen and Ken Weinstein knew Alap Momin from the band Dälek and he was kind enough to cook this up just for the movie. He even tailored the tracks to the scenes. The driving discordant build they layered into this piece feels like it’s feeding the tension between Denny and Victor.

06. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – “Satan Said Dance”

I loved their first album and we needed something dark but not too heavy for Victor’s sudden rollercoaster ride back to the dark side. Hysen and Weinstein pitched this song and when we saw it over the scene it was just right.

07. Buzzcocks – “Orgasm Addict” (rare)

This is the anthem. I sort of grew up loving The Buzzcocks, moshing my way through their songs in the East Village. I must have played it every day I was writing “Choke.” I always thought we’d open the movie with it, but it didn’t work out. In any case here is a cool alternate version with a more deadpan feel and at least it made it on to our soundtrack.

08. Death Cab For Cutie – “No Sunlight”

What can you say, they’re just really, really good.

09. Blitzen Trapper – “Wicked” (unreleased)

We listened to a lot of Blitzen Trapper during the crazed five-week summer shoot. It just seemed to fit with spending your 18-hour days in a sweltering mental hospital. They’ve got some excellent chaos going on.

10. Ms. Tyree Sugar Jones – “If You Feel It”

This plays in another tricky scene where everything we tried felt wrong. And then I got turned on to the soulful sexy stylings of Ms. Tyree “Sugar” Jones. You put this on and you know some clothes are coming off.

11. My Morning Jacket – “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt 1″

We’re all big Jacket fans. Listened to them constantly during the shoot. Very proud to have them on here.

12. Shout Out Louds – “Bicycle” (rare)

Nothing like a little kick ass Swedish indie rock. They’re like The Shins’ attitudinal Scandinavian cousins.

13. Twilight Singers – “There’s Been An Accident”

One of the producers, Contrafilm’s Beau Flynn, and I have been Greg Dulli fans for years. I listened to The Twilight Singers a lot when I was writing the script. The song is really moving in a haunting, portentous way that really works for the movie.

14. Nicole Atkins – “Crystal Ship” (unreleased)

Brilliant. She’s got a great torchy, Peggy Lee sound with just enough tongue in cheek to feel like a perfect citizen of the Palahniuk world.

On a cold, rainy night, a cold, dark band came on stage. OK, so it wasn’t that cold, and it was barely drizzling, but the ambiance of the night seemed just right for the Gutter Twins (nee Greg Dulli, the Afghan Whigs, and Mark Lanegan, the Screaming Trees). I got to the Avalon (after spending $25 to park… that’s not a typo) about 9:20 or so, just in time to hear a number of really good songs from Great Northern. They worked hard and the crowd seemed to be getting into it. My anticipation grew as the roadies were tearing down the Great Northern gear and setting up the Gutter Twins set. After a long, drawn out process, the full band finally appeared.

They started off heavy singing “The Stations.” I, as well as others in my section, seemed to be really into it. They continued with “All God’s Children” and “All Misery/Flowers.” One of the few songs that were song that were not on the album was “Live With Me,” which appeared on the Twilight Singers Stitch in Time EP. They also played a breathtaking version of the “St. James Infirmary” blues made famous by many including jazz pioneer Louis Armstrong and more recently, Isobel Campbell. The slow, brooding nature of the Gutter Twins’ vision fit that song really well.

Highlights of the night, for me, included “Seven Stories Underground” and “Bete Noire.” Dulli seemed to be frustrated with the audience when he asked for participation and got a very timid response from the hipster LA scene, at one point asking, “You guys still out there?” I was sitting almost directly in front of Jeff Klein playing keyboards. What a joy to watch. Some songs playing keys, some guitar, some playing his recorded loops from the laptop, all while smoking a cigarette. He really is an underrated and under appreciated musical talent. After Dulli introduced the band, Lanegan uttered the only non-singing words he uttered all night – “This is Greg Dulli.“

Dulli closed the set with an amazing version of “Front Street” that blew me away. The band went offstage, to what seemed to me, great applause. The band went backstage. The applause lasted a few minutes, it seemed, and all of a sudden, the lights came on and the roadies started dismantling. I did not want to believe it, but then the curtain came down. There would be no encore tonight. There is a difference between going to a Mark Lanegan concert and a Greg Dulli concert. Dulli wanted the crowd to clap, and move and show emotions, and the crowd reacted like they were at a Lanegan concert, quietly listening to incredible songs. Still, even with no encore, it was a great show, packed out at the legendary Palace Theatre, now the Avalon venue.
