Do you really want to be the new “war president”? If you go to West Point tomorrow night (Tuesday, 8pm) and announce that you are increasing, rather than withdrawing, the troops in Afghanistan, you are the new war president. Pure and simple. And with that you will do the worst possible thing you could do — destroy the hopes and dreams so many millions have placed in you. With just one speech tomorrow night you will turn a multitude of young people who were the backbone of your campaign into disillusioned cynics. You will teach them what they’ve always heard is true — that all politicians are alike. I simply can’t believe you’re about to do what they say you are going to do. Please say it isn’t so.

NOTE: Do millions of people have their “hoped and dreams” placed in Obama??? If, so, why?? That, in itself, is a real problem for anyone.

It is not your job to do what the generals tell you to do. We are a civilian-run government. WE tell the Joint Chiefs what to do, not the other way around. That’s the way General Washington insisted it must be. That’s what President Truman told General MacArthur when MacArthur wanted to invade China. “You’re fired!,” said Truman, and that was that. And you should have fired Gen. McChrystal when he went to the press to preempt you, telling the press what YOU had to do. Let me be blunt: We love our kids in the armed services, but we f*#&in’ hate these generals, from Westmoreland in Vietnam to, yes, even Colin Powell for lying to the UN with his made-up drawings of WMD (he has since sought redemption).

NOTE: Actually, Obama has been designated as commander in chief of the armed forces of the USA. Maybe, Moore, like so many other Democrats, may not be aware of this amendment. But, rather than place any confidence in a General, Moore believes that he is more accurate. Maybe I should have checked to see if Moore was writing this from Afghanistan………but, no, he is probably hold out in a bunker with his money in Hollywood.

So now you feel backed into a corner. 30 years ago this past Thursday (Thanksgiving) the Soviet generals had a cool idea — “Let’s invade Afghanistan!” Well, that turned out to be the final nail in the USSR coffin.

There’s a reason they don’t call Afghanistan the “Garden State” (though they probably should, seeing how the corrupt President Karzai, whom we back, has his brother in the heroin trade raising poppies). Afghanistan’s nickname is the “Graveyard of Empires.” If you don’t believe it, give the British a call. I’d have you call Genghis Khan but I lost his number. I do have Gorbachev’s number though. It’s + 41 22 789 1662. I’m sure he could give you an earful about the historic blunder you’re about to commit.

NOTE: LOL! Moore had Genghis Khan’s number. Of course, I understand tongue in cheek, but I also understand that by posting it like it is in this form on the front of his web page, it is done for entertainment purposes more than anything, which will help fuel his docu-fantasy career.

With our economic collapse still in full swing and our precious young men and women being sacrificed on the altar of arrogance and greed, the breakdown of this great civilization we call America will head, full throttle, into oblivion if you become the “war president.” Empires never think the end is near, until the end is here. Empires think that more evil will force the heathens to toe the line — and yet it never works. The heathens usually tear them to shreds.

NOTE: Moore seems to believe that surrender and pull out is in the best interest of the world, as America will collapse if we hang it up and come back with a mission unfulfilled. Maybe Moore needs film time over there and he knows that if we surrender that we become sitting ducks here, but he will be safe over there? Just a thought.

Choose carefully, President Obama. You of all people know that it doesn’t have to be this way. You still have a few hours to listen to your heart, and your own clear thinking. You know that nothing good can come from sending more troops halfway around the world to a place neither you nor they understand, to achieve an objective that neither you nor they understand, in a country that does not want us there. You can feel it in your bones.

NOTE: Always get a kick out of this kind of pleading. The truth is “in your bones” and “in your heart” etc etc etc. And Moore is telling Obama what he “knows” since Moore is the expert on what everyone else “knows.” Go figure.

I know you know that there are LESS than a hundred al-Qaeda left in Afghanistan! A hundred thousand troops trying to crush a hundred guys living in caves? Are you serious? Have you drunk Bush’s Kool-Aid? I refuse to believe it.

NOTE: This I think is the most hilarious point from this letter. How does Moore know there’s less then one hundred? Unless he is one of them (and I wont lay out any conspiracy theory on that), than he does not know. So, why not take care of the one hundred and get out if he is so sure. Why leave and not finish the job if it is sol close to being done?

Your potential decision to expand the war (while saying that you’re doing it so you can “end the war”) will do more to set your legacy in stone than any of the great things you’ve said and done in your first year. One more throwing a bone from you to the Republicans and the coalition of the hopeful and the hopeless may be gone — and this nation will be back in the hands of the haters quicker than you can shout “tea bag!”

NOTE: Notice the little dig at “tea bag” being equal to hate. lol.

Choose carefully, Mr. President. Your corporate backers are going to abandon you as soon as it is clear you are a one-term president and that the nation will be safely back in the hands of the usual idiots who do their bidding. That could be Wednesday morning.

NOTE: So, Moore is subtley accusing Obama of being a leader who is a pawn of corporations? Is he even reading what he is writing?

We the people still love you. We the people still have a sliver of hope. But we the people can’t take it anymore. We can’t take your caving in, over and over, when we elected you by a big, wide margin of millions to get in there and get the job done. What part of “landslide victory” don’t you understand?

NOTE: So is this a threat to take back the votes? And lanlslide? Only amongst the Moore peer group of people who make fantasy movies and call them documentaries.

Don’t be deceived into thinking that sending a few more troops into Afghanistan will make a difference, or earn you the respect of the haters. They will not stop until this country is torn asunder and every last dollar is extracted from the poor and soon-to-be poor. You could send a million troops over there and the crazy Right still wouldn’t be happy. You would still be the victim of their incessant venom on hate radio and television because no matter what you do, you can’t change the one thing about yourself that sends them over the edge.

NOTE: But there’s only a hundred to get, according to you? Why would Obama even have to consider sending so many?

The haters were not the ones who elected you, and they can’t be won over by abandoning the rest of us.

NOTE: Moore does what all the elite do so well. If you do not agree with them, you are a “hater,’ Not true, of course, but most of them cannot see past the rose color in their glasses.

President Obama, it’s time to come home. Ask your neighbors in Chicago and the parents of the young men and women doing the fighting and dying if they want more billions and more troops sent to Afghanistan. Do you think they will say, “No, we don’t need health care, we don’t need jobs, we don’t need homes. You go on ahead, Mr. President, and send our wealth and our sons and daughters overseas, ’cause we don’t need them, either.”

NOTE: But health care will be a minor issue when terrorists hit American soil and kill. Body bags may be an issue.

What would Martin Luther King, Jr. do? What would your grandmother do? Not send more poor people to kill other poor people who pose no threat to them, that’s what they’d do. Not spend billions and trillions to wage war while American children are sleeping on the streets and standing in bread lines.

NOTE: Moore does oft times thinks he is a black man. And he does hate most white people, with the exception of anyone writing his paycheck for a docu-fantasy

All of us that voted and prayed for you and cried the night of your victory have endured an Orwellian hell of eight years of crimes committed in our name: torture, rendition, suspension of the bill of rights, invading nations who had not attacked us, blowing up neighborhoods that Saddam “might” be in (but never was), slaughtering wedding parties in Afghanistan. We watched as hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians were slaughtered and tens of thousands of our brave young men and women were killed, maimed, or endured mental anguish — the full terror of which we scarcely know.

NOTE: It was during that “Orwellian hell” of 8 years that Moore made most of his money by making films that were anti-American and anti-capitalist, while at the same time profiting for the same.

When we elected you we didn’t expect miracles. We didn’t even expect much change. But we expected some. We thought you would stop the madness. Stop the killing. Stop the insane idea that men with guns can reorganize a nation that doesn’t even function as a nation and never, ever has.

NOTE: I don’t think he is speaking for everyone when he says we “didn’t expect miracles.” I think there were many voters who did and still do expect miracles from him.

Stop, stop, stop! For the sake of the lives of young Americans and Afghan civilians, stop. For the sake of your presidency, hope, and the future of our nation, stop. For God’s sake, stop.

NOTE: And of course a special pleading to the God he does not believe in

Tonight we still have hope.

Tomorrow, we shall see. The ball is in your court. You DON’T have to do this. You can be a profile in courage. You can be your mother’s son.

We’re counting on you.

Yours,
Michael Moore

It’s not cold yet, but I can literally feel the shivers going down my spine… and the silliest grin is stamped over my face.

Yaay! December is back!
Yup! It’s here with its usual blessings and omens…

My head is filled with cool breezes and winds of ol’ familiar confusions and conflicts. It’s become a zero gravity room where things just float aimlessly around, never touching down.

I don’t mind much at this point. I’m watching thoughts and things float and jump and dance and hide and wave… and I decide to ignore the fear…

The never-touching-down thoughts will eventually land, maybe in the new year. Or spring!
Hmm… Nah…. Springtime is when already-landed thoughts and things that bloomed in December start withering and falling apart… to make room for a summer of decay, an autumn of fresh clean cinnamony air, and yet another winter of freaky beginnings. December is the high point.

December December!

Let it come. Bring it on. I’ll take it, swallow it, digest it, and take more in. Let it rain on me. I’ll look up with my eyes closed and my mouth half-open and try not to slip and fall on my back.

December, I love you. You’re one generous month with a cynical sense of humor and a genuine nature.

Buy Cheap Last Night in Twisted River: A Novel Buy Low Price From Here Now In 1954, in the cookhouse

Buy Cheap Last Night in Twisted River: A Novel

Buy Low Price From Here Now
In 1954, in the cookhouse of a logging and sawmill settlement in northern New Hampshire, an anxious twelve-year-old boy mistakes the local constable’s girlfriend for a bear. Both the twelve-year-old and his father become fugitives, forced to run from Coos County–to Boston, to southern Vermont, to Toronto–pursued by the implacable constable. Their lone protector is a fiercely libertarian logger, once a river driver, who befriends them.

In a story spanning five decades, Last Night in Twisted River–John Irving’s twelfth novel–depicts the recent half-century in the United States as “a living replica of Coos County, where lethal hatreds were generally permitted to run their course.” From the novel’s taut opening sentence–“The young Canadian, who could not have been more than fifteen, had hesitated too long”–to its elegiac final chapter, Last Night in Twisted River is written with the historical authenticity and emotional authority of The Cider House Rules and A Prayer for Owen Meany. It is also as violent and disturbing a story as John Irving’s breakthrough bestseller, The World According to Garp.

What further distinguishes Last Night in Twisted River is the author’s unmistakable voice–the inimitable voice of an accomplished storyteller. Near the end of this moving novel, John Irving writes: “We don’t always have a choice how we get to know one another. Sometimes, people fall into our lives cleanly–as if out of the sky, or as if there were a direct flight from Heaven to Earth–the same sudden way we lose people, who once seemed they would always be part of our lives.”…….
Readmore

“John Irving’s Meta-Novel” 2009-11-29
By Alan L. Chase (Boston, MA)
“The young Canadian, who could not have been more than fifteen, had hesitated too long.”

Thus begins, in media res, John Irving’s latest novel. I am calling it a meta-novel, because it reads like a mobius strip of a narrative – fiction and commentary about the process of writing fiction twisting themselves together like the river in the title or the branches of the wind-swept tree depicted on the book’s cover. In a uniquely Irvingesque way, the author returns to themes that will be warmly familiar to those of us who perch on the edge of our seats waiting for the next offering from the mind and pen of John Irving. There are the obligatory appearances of bears, Philips Exeter Academy, the University of New Hampshire, Vermont, Toronto, the wrestling room, the Writers’ Workshop in Iowa, sexual dalliances in motor vehicles, awkward couplings and uncouplings, the severing of limbs, and the threat of death as a constant companion to the characters and to the reader.

This may be Irving’s most autobiographical novel to date, although he takes great pains to have the protagonist, writer Danny Angel, né Daniel Baciagalupo, discuss the topic of autobiographical writing. Angel, channeling Irving, makes the point that while there are always autobiographical elements in any novel, the characters take on a life of their own and the fiction is different from the composite figures that spring from real or imagined events in the life of the writer.

Irving returns, as well, to the theme of younger men held in the thrall of older women. Using settings in cook shacks and restaurants in the logging camps of northern New Hampshire, Boston’s North end, Iowa, Vermont and Toronto, Irving serves up a bouillabaisse of characters and action that propel the reader forward through the twisted journeys of three generations of men and those who love them and add spice to their lives. Dominic “Cookie” Baciagalupo, his son, Daniel and grandson, Joe form a tragic triumvirate around which revolve countless characters who appear on the stage of the novel in colorful and unexpected ways. Some fall from the sky, snowshoe into the teeth of a blizzard, break through the ice, slip off of logs and drive from New York’s Chinatown halfway across the U.S. to the heartland of Iowa.

You will notice that I am not talking much about the plot. Although the plot is as brilliant as any we have come to expect from John Irving, I found myself even more interested in the process by which Irving chose to present the plot. The book’s broad themes and the discursive musings about the art of writing added a layer of intrigue to my enjoyment of this story.

This is a wondrous work that tells the story of a writer who is telling a story about his life and his work as a story teller. It is a tantalizingly twisted tale that should delight and “appall” discerning readers.

Enjoy.

“Irving Stretches a Short Story Plot into a Mediocre Novel” 2009-11-29
By Elm Brook (Vermont)
I’ve been a long time reader of Irving’s work and it is with much disapointment that this novel is now a part of pattern – Irving’s gradual slide into mediocrity. Too many of the characters introduced in this novel were either incomplete or not needed to tell this story. When he does develop a realistic character, he can’t help but make them unbelievable by forcing his own 2 dimensional political views on to his creations.

The dialog is often synthetic or goofy. For example in the reuniting of the protagonist with the woman who’s to turn his life around, the dialog in that scene consists of lines such as “…I’ve been sixty for the last couple of years…” followed by “You look fifty…”

“Twisted River” is nothing short of excess verbage and demonstrates that Irving should have put down his pen a lot sooner on this project.

Note to Mr. Irving: I’m not interested in your political views nor am I interested in your personal life. I just want a good story.

“A Tortured Read” 2009-11-27
By Francis J. Duffy (Hilton Head Island)
When a person writes timeless classics like The World According to Garp (Modern Library),The Cider House Rules: A Novel (Modern Library),The Hotel New Hampshire (Ballantine Reader’s Circle),and A Son of the Circus (Ballantine Reader’s Circle) it is hard to imagine that their skills can be diminished over time. Regretfully Last Night in Twisted River: A Novel, John Irving’s third straight disappointment, demonstrates that genius too may be a non renewable resource. Twisted River is burdened with excessive and meaningless dialogue, numerous boring chracters, name changes and time shifts that make for a burdensome and convoluted read. The tortured and excessive dialogue makes the main characters tedious and not remotely likeable or even believeable. The reader gets the impression that Irving is being compensated by word count. In addition he could not resist forcing his political views, awkwardly, into the laborious last 100 pages. This self-conscious intrusion made finishing the book a taxing chore. The books final romantic ‘payoff’ is a pathetically thin major disappointment. John Irving set his own gold standard over the past 40 years, it’s a shame that it now appears he is no longer able to deliver at that lofty level.

The best part of the novel is the beginning, including descriptions of logging, river drives, and the rough, hard-drinking characters of the Northeast logging camps. The most awkward and ill-fitting parts of the novel are toward the end when Irving peppers his characters’ dialogue with anti-Bush screeds, obviously reflecting his own personal views. Entertaining but not his best.

“Last Night at Twisted River” 2009-11-25
By Terry Anderson (Salina, Kansas United States)
I love John Irving, and I couldn’t put this book down. However, using September 11 to make a political statement went too far and the book lasts a little too long without a satisfying ending. Without giving the climax of the book away, I have to say that its resolution was just too political and though you can tell that Ketchum is a character that Irving cares a great deal about, he is far too much the focus of the end of the book. What makes this book great to read is the relationship between father and son. I recommend the book. Just skim the last 100 pages or so.

So I was surfing around last night, like I usually do, when an odd window appeared. It was one of those popups designed to look like a real application window, and in this case, it had a bunch of made-up visuals on it designed to make me think that it was an antivirus scanner, and that it had found a bunch of junk on my computer. It called itself “Antivirus System PRO”, and I immediately recognized it as bullshit, and closed the window. Then I noticed something else odd: it had stuck an icon in the taskbar tray, down by the clock. No fake app popup I’ve ever seen can do that. And that’s when it started to take over.

Clicking or right-clicking on the taskbar tray icon merely re-displayed the window I’d closed earlier. Fine, I’ll start Task Manager and kill it that way. Except a Ctrl-Shift-Esc didn’t open Task Manager, it opened an error window saying that taskmgr.exe was infected, and it had been blocked from starting. Fine, time to consult Google on how to get rid of it. I had Chrome open, and Ctrl-T’d to open a new tab. Except I got the same error window again, this time saying that chrome.exe was infected. Ok, I’ll just re-use an already-open tab to get to Google. I’m instead re-directed to a page explaining that that link has been blocked, and I’m offered a link to purchase the “full” version of Antivirus System PRO in order to remove the problem.

I do a Windows+R to get the Run box, with the intent to start cmd.exe to see if maybe there’s a command-line way of killing this thing. cmd.exe gets blocked by the same error window as before. Attempting to start other browsers also doesn’t work. Ok, I know that Internet Explorer is integrated into Windows Explorer, so if I open a Windows Explorer window, I can just type a web URL into the address bar, and bam, I’m surfing. It lets me open a Windows Explorer window, but entering any link in the address bar takes me back to the page I mentioned before. The page that I’m redirected to, bizarrely, says it’s on microsoft.com — all part of the ruse, no doubt.

Fine, you piece of shit. You may be on this computer, but you’re not on the computer a room away. I start that one up, search a bit, and find out that Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware can get rid of this thing. It so happens I have that installed on the infected computer, but of course, I can’t start it because it just gets blocked like any other program I try to run. So I restart into safe mode, update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, and run it. It finds and nukes the bastard into oblivion.

It’s at this part that I start to think, and I start to get infuriated.

First, how did the thing get on my computer to begin with?

I used to believe that when people said that they got a virus, and that they didn’t download, install, or run anything suspicious to get it, they were delusional or mistaken or just plain lying. But that’s exactly my situation here: I was literally just surfing around, not running anything out of the ordinary, not visiting any sites out of the ordinary, when the bloody thing just showed up and took over.

But what infuriates me more than being a “power user” and still getting outfoxed by malware is that someone made this malware.

See, in our day and age, software is so widely and easily available that we take it for granted that people make it. We just go to a web page, click a link, install, and run. But it doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. Somebody made that software, and put it up on that web page for you to download.

So, as far as malware goes, it isn’t some rogue program that appeared out of thin air one day and started spreading. Somebody made it. Which means that somebody sat down and decided to make it; they thought about this thing, and planned out, and then created, all of the awful things that it does. Using computers as a means, someone made the conscious decision to hurt other people. That bothers me.

What bothers me more, though, is how readily I was steered to a page where I could buy myself out of this bullshit. In other words, not only did someone make the decision to create software that would maliciously take over other people’s computers, they thought up a way that they could make money off of it.

And not everybody is as resourceful as me. Not everybody has access to another computer that they could use to bail themselves out. Plenty of people out there would be totally helpless against this thing, and would be absolutely forced into paying to get rid of it. Which means that at some point, someone realized the potential of this helplessness… and so they decided to make some software that would allow them to profit from that helplessness. That bothers me.

But what bothers me most, though? It most likely wasn’t built by just one person. And the people that built it were likely paid by someone else to build it. That means that multiple people were involved in creating something designed to exploit the weaknesses of others, and nobody said no. Nobody stood up and said “hey, this doesn’t seem right, maybe we shouldn’t be making this”. Or maybe they did, and they got fired, and replaced by someone that would comply. Regardless, the software was completed, released, and now the participants can sit back and pretend that the rich ends justify the unscrupulous means.

But ultimately, they don’t get to win. For all of the bad that these selfish assholes can come up with, there’s people that make software like Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware. People that decided to use their powers for good; people that sit around all day and use their brains to squash the assholes. And then, on top of the altruism that comes along with creating such software, they give their software away for free. It’s the sort of thing that can restore one’s faith in the race.

This week – I log in for what is the first week of my last course for my Master’s in tea

This week – I log in for what is the first week of my last course for my Master’s in teaching and learning with technology. I’m *so* excited to see this:

Last November (yep, just a year ago) I enrolled in the Master’s program at Ashford University where I was going to take my classes online. It’s an accelerated course, you take each class back to back, finishing in 13 months, but over summer, I was able to take two classes at once, allowing me to get a little jump start on my graduation. So I will, as you can see, be finished Jan 11, 2010 – and I am *SO* relieved. I’d actually be done earlier, but at Christmas they have a two week break, so I will really be in my last hunk during Christmas and hopefully will be able to submit everything ahead of time and be DONE.

Now – what does this mean for me? Well it means I satisfied Ohio’s requirements that you must get your Master’s in education before I renew for my license a third time (I’m only on round one right now anyhow), and it means I get a significant pay raise next school year

Oh, so so excited to see Jan 11 wow, that’s a lot of 1’s and 0’s , 01/11/10…. strange.
