So this post is inspired by Mrs M, who saw me playing on tweetpic this afternoon (for fun, yes a little bit geeky behaviour in hindsight!) looked over my shoulder and saw my favourites bar that is full of different twitter tools.

She said to me “I bet if you listed all the twitter tools in your favourites bar some people might have a go at using them and find it useful”.

So here they are, explore and enjoy!

Twitter Search – http://search.twitter.com/

twubble – http://www.crazybob.org/twubble/

twubble me encanta.

TweetStats – http://tweetstats.com/

Twittervision – http://twittervision.com/maps/show_3d

Twist – http://twist.flaptor.com/

Happy Friday Everyone!

I had a good week and I have a lot on my mind today. We got good news that the Cook Islands job seems to be heading full-steam in the right direction now that we know that MD stands for Managing Director and not Medical Doctor as we had previously thought. In addition, recently we got even more good news on the Thailand job front as well. Rip was informed on Wednesday that the off-site position with that American company seems to be coming along nicely as well. His schedule would be 13 hrs a day on Saturday, Sunday and Monday then off for 4 days. Of course if we can go to the Islands that would be a dream but making American wages in Thailand would be hard to turn down. It’s interesting to me that life is presenting us with these opportunities that seem to be polar opposites. I can’t help but wonder why. Is life somehow asking us to decide what we need the most at this point in our lives? Making that decision will be tough.

Do we embrace a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live a tranquil island lifestyle on a remote, self sustaining island paradise while making an average but adequate New Zealand salary, and little in the way of healthcare? This would definitely heal our souls, but what if one of us gets sick while we are there?

-or-

Do we feed our need for adventure and go to Thailand? We can experience what life is like there with more than enough money to live comfortably and the opportunity to work from anywhere with high speed internet access. This will allow the ability to travel every few months to a different location. Thailand is known around the world as having a sophisticated high tech healthcare industry which would definitely heal our bodies ~but will Thailand heal our souls? I can only say that I hope we don’t have to be the ones to make this decision. I hope somehow it’s made for us with one job (hopefully not both) falling through. In the worst case scenario of losing both opportunities, we will go to Thailand and both teach English. Rip is showing interest in teaching math in a university setting and my skills are marketable for teaching (English) in Thailand as well. Regardless, a decision at some point will need to be made. Our depositions are scheduled for June 2nd which is only 6 weeks away. Once that’s done, we are free to travel abroad. To all our friends, thanks for coming along on our wild journey up ’til now. Stay tuned for the continuing saga of Another Beautiful Adventure!

I am posting some cool sites I’ve come across on the web. I wanted to share them with you today.

For all our geeky-tech friends~ Dave and Julie, Mark (who looks just like Leo Di Caprio), my secret lover~Q, and the rest of you~ you know who you are! I thought this was just the coolest flash drive I’ve seen yet. It’s called the LaCie IamaKey. It looks like a regular key on your keychain and stores 8GB of data. The price is very reasonable at $25-$33.

This is fascinating to me for some reason and I don’t even use twitter! You can see tweets in real time all over the globe. You really should see this if you haven’t already. There’s no signing up, just twitter on over to Twitter Vision to check it out.

And finally, it just wouldn’t be the weekend without some good Blues and BBQ Art! Enjoy your weekend!

Twitter is all the rage now. In the past week alone I’ve seen it emerge as the cover story of business magazines, mention during news broadcasts and continual mention by colleagues. It doesn’t take long before you have hundreds if not thousands of “followers”. How you use Twitter, or any other social network, will determine whether the time you invest in social marketing will be meaningful to you and your business.

So can there be a real-world value and ROI to social networking and your integrated marketing plan?
Absolutely!

I have personally have engaged in discussion with businesses throughout US and Canada, resulting in strategic partnership and new business for my search engine & internet marketing firm.

…all of which were initiated via Twitter!

But there is more to Twitter mania, especially if geographic marketing plays any role in how you proactively market your business.

Just as we did in traditional marketing before the internet (yup, I’m that old), geographic targeting can be extremely valuable in determining whether a medium will reach target audiences. Twitter Map solutions, in theory, could be used much in the same way to build and deploy an effective social marketing strategy.

Although very early in development, I anticipate the integration of social media, mapping and marketing will become far more sophisticated and meaningful to the marketing mix – soon!

There are currently a variety of applications and websites that allow you to find, map and track your Tweeps for a more meaningful dialogue.

Here are just a few current Twitter mapping applications to check out for viability from a marketing, networking and sales perspective:

Tweetmapper.com
Map your tweets! This application lets you tell Twitter followers where you are, where you’ve travelled, places to go and things to do, even share news around you – as it’s happening.

This application could be useful for event promotions, travel and hospitaility marketing, blogging, professional clubs and associations, chambers of commerce, the list goes on. If you’re on the move and want people to know…this could be a great way to leverage that Twitter account.

Twittermap.com
offers a similar solution that integrates Google Maps with Twitter profiles and recent tweets. You can type in a location and view Tweeters by city, state, zip code, even street name. It doesn’t appear to refresh in real time, however if you are interested in learning where the Twitter population is in any given geographic location, Twittermap could be an interesting tool.

Twittervision.com
This is basically what it sounds like…a visual display of Tweets by displaying them from their geographic location. This website offers a cool worldwide perspective of Twitter and doesn’t offer much control, but is interesting to see, so I’ve included it.

TwitSpy.com
Offers a similar experience to Twittervision with scrolling Tweets. It does offer a filter by Twitter profile, location, etc, which is a little clunky, but interesting. This would become much more interesting for business, marketing and networking if it offered you the ability to integrate your Followers without having to follow your Tweeps, one at a time. (which you can do on Twitter much more easily)…we’ll see where this one goes.

TwitterGrader.com
Twitter Grader is a ranking site that “grades” Tweeters within any geogrphical profile you enter. You can view entire Twitterdom, by country, state, or city. By entering the Twitter user name you get the score, profile, view the “tweet cloud” (keywords reflecting tweet topics), and other interesting data. By entering city, you can view the top Twitter users in any area, identifying potential strategic partners as influencers, people to follow, or as competition to overcome.

The best way to use social marketing mapping tools to support business goals is to first build a social marketing strategy and use the data to support those efforts.

Another way to leverage Twitter and mapping is to add a Twitter Google Map Mashup on your website. This is an entirely different discussion for a future entry!

How will you use Twitter Maps for marketing, networking and business development?

Mention in these solutions is not an endorsement of these solutions. I encourage you to check them out to determine whether they might be of value to you.

It may not be the most useful way to find someone new to find to follow it is a fun way of seeing tweets going on around the planet.

This is how it looks regularly:

Gleichzeitig landen all meine Tweets automatisch bei Facebook. Vollkommen Vertwittert

Was machst du gerade?

In diesem Sinne: Follow me!

We’ve accumulated a list of the twenty most popular Twitter applications, based on monthly unique visitor data from Compete.

Twitpic, an app that lets users share photos on Twitter, took the top spot with 1,236,828 unique visitors in January. Tweetdeck, which came in second with 285,864 monthly visits, is a Twitter app that streamlines notifications and tweets. Third place went to Digsby (with 233,472 monthly visitors), an application that centralizes e-mail, IM and social networking accounts into one desktop program. With 149,812 visits, the fourth most popular app, Twitterfeed, offers to automatically tweet posts published on a user’s blog using RSS. A Twitter user ranking site, Twitterholic, is the fifth most popular application, with 147,164 people visiting monthly.

Interestingly, two of the top twenty apps – Digsby and Hellotxt, an application that allows users to update their status across social networks – are not exclusively focused on Twitter. We recently wrote a detailed post on why we cover Twitter-related news so often, and we think the fact that there are so many applications developed as an offshoot of the microblogging system is another testament to the fact that Twitter is not just another startup. This is our attempt to figure out which ones are gaining the most traction.

While we think this is a pretty comprehensive list based on the chosen proxy for popularity, it’s but a first pass at a list we hope will become more authoritative over time. Keep in mind that this methodology is only one measurement of engagement; many people use Twitter iPhone apps and other clients without ever visiting these services’ websites. Derivative site traffic is only a proxy for usage but the most easily measurable one.

We also ran these sites though Quantcast and Google Trends, but chose to measure by Compete because it had the most comprehensive set of data, especially for the smaller sites. So the absolute numbers are unquestionably higher for some of these Twitter apps. If you know additional Twitter apps that should be listed here, or if you have better ideas on how to compile this list, please leave a message in the comments.

It should also be noted that there is a plethora of Twitter application databases out there. Here are a few that we looked at particularly closely: Twitter Fan Wiki, Twitdom, Twapps, Twitstat, and TwitTown.

Update: As many people are pointing out in the comments, Twhirl is not included in this list. That’s because the list is based on Compete data, and Compete measures Twhirl at under 13,000 visitors per month. As we said above, this is just the first pass at creating a list and we certainly realize Compete traffic is not a perfect way to gauge the popularity of applications.

Update 2: So it looks like we owe a “mea culpa” on Twhirl, since we looked up the wrong address on Compete originally (it’s at .org not .com). Twhirl.org actually has 143,000 visitors, putting it at the #6 spot.

Update 3: By popular demand, here is a list of the Top 21 Twitter Clients (According To TwitStat).

Already a week behind and playing catchup again! So what have I looked at today? Well I watched a video clip on Social Networking which left me with some reservations – It’s a good way of keeping up to date with what is happening in peoples lives but only as long as your friends use it as well. Anyway I took the plunge and set myself up with a Facebook account. I had a lot of trouble confirming this as the security on my P.C. wouldn’t allow pop ups! It only worked once I cut and pasted the URL into my browser. Thank fully finding and inviting a friend was more straight forward. I also browsed the groups set up by staff & students at the University but the ones I found interesting were closed groups. Better were the ‘become a fan’ groups – definitely something to explore when I’ve more time.

I found Microblogging a more interesting prospect. A kind of lazy/in a hurry person’s diary/blog. I like the idea of brief to the point entries, easier to read than a blog, more about activities than thoughts, so after watching the video clip I set up an account with Twitter. I don’t really feel inspired to microblog myself, although it is fun to read someone else’s, I’ve already paid daily visits to the ones by William Shatner & Stephen Fry (the best of the two).

I watched the video clip on twittervision but it gave me an headache watching it flit from one new twitter entry to another!

Another post about visual stimuli. This time I have listed below a few interesting sites that show just how global the social media are.

The first is WikipediaVision (beta) created by László Kozma. The site contains a map of the world and, as you watch, you can see what people are editing or contributing to Wikipedia as “anonymous edits to English Wikipedia (almost) in real-time”and where they are based. The map moves as the new entries are added (You can also choose to watch the German, French, Spanish, Swedish edits ). It is powered by Google Chart API.

The idea for WikipediaVision came after László Kozma saw the following sites created by Dave Troy.

Flickrvision shows real time, geolocated Flickr photos, where the map moves around to show some of the photos being uploaded to Flickr. and

Twittervision, a real-time geographic visualization of posts to Twitter.

These are addictive when you start to watch.

A re-mixable data source is, by and large, a web site that permits the user to combine the site

A re-mixable data source is, by and large, a web site that permits the user to combine the site’s data with information from other sources, in order to create some new informational view. The result is often referred to as a mashup.

The site developers usually provide a set of tools to facilitate the merging of external data into the information offered by their site. These tools are usually referred to under the arcane acronym, API. An Application Programming Interface is like a set of standardized connections into the web site so that mashup creators can incorporate the external material.

These video tutorials demonstrate how the Yahoo Pipes API works.

One of the most common examples of a mashup is the integration of various sorts of data, for example, real estate information, with a map. Google Maps is a good example. Users can create their own maps by adding images, YouTube videos, and other markers.

European campers have used Google maps to show the location of campsites. Then there is the Diaroogle Team whose web site offers a detailed map showing the locations of the public toilets in Manhattan.

Flickrvision is a global slideshow where photographs, as they are uploaded to Flickr, pop up on a map of the world, (in 3D if you wish) indicating the location of the photographer.

Twittervision is a variation on the Flickrvision idea.

One way to better understand the mechanics of creating a mashup is to go to Microsoft’s Popfly. Here is an example of one user’s mashing of Google maps and upcoming concert information.

The mashup is a relatively new idea and its development relies heavily on web site developers creating and enhancing the API’s that enable to combine data from different sources.

Your comments are welcome.

Ebenso cool: Die neue Software “Shazam” fürs iPhone.
