Oton Bačar you slow-mo wizard, you. If you want a tasty slice of slow motion with high definition footage here’s the video for you! This is a 7D test of Bačars’ friend doing some wicked bmx tricks! The entire thing was shot at 720p at 60fps with a Canon EFS 18-135mm lens and editied with Twixtor in After Effects. If your wondering what the shutter speed was i couldn’t tell you because i didn’t do it (even though i wish i did), but there was some speculation that you have to “first nest the 60 fps in a 24p timeline and set the speed (not twixtor yet) to 40%, then use this created sequence on your actual timeline and apply the twixtor to that.” The music rolling in the background is “Fly Away” from the track “Wings” check it out here! This is a real beaut created by our very own Jim Petersen, who has captured one of the six wonders of the Isle of Wight brilliantly.

Petersen says, ‘Freshwater Bay is a place I have marvelled at ever since I can remember. Me and my cousin went down to the beach to collect some shots. Like the island itself, somethings you can appreciate more with a change of pace.’

What do you think of it?

Lots of Memorial Day action, but so far I have very little to show for it.  Fortunately Politics has begun sending me some highlights from this past season in the Wasatch.  I’ve also been experimenting with Twixtor to so the new footage to play with was much appreciated.

Today, the sun came out long enough for me to shoot a video on my way back from OBI and MediaMarkt.

I shot with my 60D at 60fps, AWB, 1/1200. Slowed down to 10% using twixtor in AfterEffect, and color graded in Vegas Pro.

Can’t see any artifacts. Nice and clean, as far as I can see.

The original idea came from the film “koyaanisqatsi”, directed by Godfrey Reggio. The cinematography is by Ron Fricke, who later on would direct films like Baraka or Samsara, and the music by Philip Glass. Here is a beautiful review of the film.

On the tech side, I used a Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon 550D with Canon lenses. The slow motion clips were shot on the 550D at 60fps and then conformed to 24fps. I used Twixtor in some of them to slow them down a bit further.

The music was made with Pro Scores.

Although there are still many obstacles to overcome. Finding a good costume designer, set designer, special effects artist, etc. But right now the biggest obstacle for me is overcoming the slow-mo problem. I am attempting to make an epic. There will be some amount of slow motion in the film. Even though I have the Canon 5D Mark II (which is excellent), it only shoots at 24fps or 30fps. To achieve remotely smooth, good-looking slow motion you’d need a frame rate of 200fps to 1000fps, or more if possible. Problem is there are virtually no affordable HD cameras with frame rates that high on the market. So now I have to find a way to rent a high speed camera cheaply (which I’m sure can’t be done), or try and use a plug-in called Twixtor, which supposedly can take your 5D footage and speed up the frame rate so the slow-mo looks decent. I’ve never used – or even heard of – this plug-in before, but I’ll give it a try. Hopefully it works because I definitely can’t afford the HD high speed cameras on the market now… I think the cheapest one there is is like upwards of $20,000. And to rent them costs like $2500 a day. It’s just not possible.

Started AfterEffects and Vegas yesterday. Made this using a bit of both, and of course Twixtor.

If you don’t know what Twixtor is, it’s simply an extremely high quality time warping plugin for Adobe AfterEffects which lets you render a slow motion clip of the selected time frame. Because COD games run on 60 frames per second, using Twixtor with a Call of Duty clip really lets you showcase the potential and amazing capabilities of Twixtor.

Thanks to PeerTheDong (Brian), without his help I would be completely confused as a newcomer to the world of editing.
