Here’s a little sneak peak of something myself and 3 classmates are working on this semester.  I’m spending my Saturday evening sipping on some rum & coke while piecing together our brand manual.  Here’s to the holidays that are quickly approaching, and completing the worst school semester of a lifetime, Cheers!

When golfing on a course I haven’t recently played or a hole with an intimidating water hazard, or really whenever I’m not certain if I’ll lose a ball to bad aim in a tree thicket, I tend to use recycled golf balls, as not to lose a better quality one. Recycled golf balls are very cheap and often scavenged from golf courses or are overprint off custom orders from tournaments / cooperate or charity events / venues.  They generally come in packs of 25 or 50 and lately I’ve found them as a convenient study in logo design. Most have limited color schemes due to extra printing costs, but the designs are mixed, with logos, icons, or just text.

Most tournament logos print in two colors (ones from any golf course on the water (especially in the Carolinas and Florida) tend to use yellow and blue). I’ve rarely seen type using neon or bright warm colors, mostly dark blues or neutrals, which contrast against the lime tinted cropped grass on the green or the dull white of a sand trap. Most companies have their exact logo printed, but with consideration to arrangement if an icon is also included.  It does seem that some companies, such as Digital Reports, add a clip-art styled image that, unfortunately, gives them a dated look.

Mostly, it’s quite random and immensely amusing (at least for a design nerd such as myself) to come across such variations in branding design. Every so often I’ll find one from someones wedding (or bar mitzvah! What a fantastic kid to opt for a golf outing as part of his coming of age celebration). At the Golfsmith mecca in Austin, they have open containers for the recycled balls and, if you’re really finicky about the designs, you can hand pick them (that’s where I got the Senate one, at least).

I listen to Trance music in so many hours of my days and nights that it’s odd to be in a silent room. A recent project required me to make a logo for a night club, “Club Life”. This name is derived from Tiesto’s radio show in the Netherlands by the same name: “Tiesto’s Club Life”. Trance has been made famous by such artists including Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, David Guetta, Paul van Dyk, Robert Miles, Above & Beyond, Markus Schulz, Ferry Corsten, Gareth Emery, Sander Van Doorn, ATB, Paul Oakenfold, and many more. You don’t have the time or the resources to evaluate every applicant who strolls in. to guide your work, you should develop a profile of your “ideal” candidate. You may never find your ideal, but you will establish a basic framework that outlines the person you are looking for.

Developing an ideal candidate profile is similar to viewing a lineup of suspects after you’ve witnessed a bank robbery. The individual you pick out may not be the actual bank robber, but chances are the real criminal is strongly similar. Often, a lineup helps police establish the silhouette or basic framework of the person being sought. The police is clear even if the details are not. Likewise, your ideal candidate profile will give you a sharper idea of what you are really looking for, so that you can increase your odds of finding him or her.

Use the following outline to develop of profile of your ideal candidate:

Be specific when you draft your outline. If you want someone with strong follow-up skills, say so. If you want an assertive person who can handle high stress, say so. To create a good match between job and candidate, you need to define the person as closely as you define the job.

Keep your company culture in mind, too. If your company is team-oriented and flexible, you want a candidate who is comfortable with teamwork—and not everyone is. If your department is highly structured, you want someone who works well in a structured situation. Describe the qualities that your company values so that you can find compatible candidates.

Just remember that defining the candidate is a lot like shopping for groceries: the more you toss into your shopping cart, the more you’ll pay. The cost of filling a job is influenced by two factors: how long it takes to find the candidate, and the supply of qualified candidates. The greater the number of must have items on your list, the longer it’s going to take to find that person. The greater the experience, skills, or education requirements, the smaller the supply of candidates and the larger the compensation package required to hire the person.

Most Thanksgivings are simple, a classic menu for a small family, but this year we had several British family friends join us, which left me cooking for ten. One person couldn’t have salt, two were caffeine free, and the biggest challenge was preparing a menu that would not exclude the no-sugar, gluten-free vegetarian. Oh my.

Scouring the Farmers Market and Whole Foods left me with plenty of wholesome produce to work with, but after the initial planning of the menu came another concern. The no-sugar, gluten-free vegetarian had said in past American Thanksgivings, no one ever considered her dietary restrictions while planning the meal, thus she just push around bits of salad on her plate while others gorged themselves. With so many people attending the meal, I would be exhausted by the time I thoroughly explained how each dish was prepared, pointing out the vegan, non-glutinous, non-caffeinated, sugar-free items. Tedious to recall as well.

My solution was to create little cards to be placed by the dish explaining what it is and the considerations I took while preparing it (such as using veggie-stock rather than chicken-stock). I have some family members with no dietary considerations who would still need to be briefed on what exactly kale is, and reassured that yes, it is edible. Concept seemed simple, but it was the design of the cards that became quite a distraction.

Ideally, I would like to handwrite them, in my draftsman uppercase hand, using a Pilot 05 Razor or a 03 Micron pen on heavy cardstock. Unfortunately, since I was also responsible for cooking the numerous dishes that would make up the meal, as well as making the cards to explain them, that didn’t seem practical. Not only would that take more time than I had to ensure each letter had perfected x-heights and consistent ascenders/decenders, but after cooking for so many hours I was exhausted; attempting my first hand-written card proved to be far too frustrating, the muscles in my hand were trembling from such overuse, heavy lifting of full pans and chopping of absurdly dense squash. I just couldn’t negotiate my writing into consistency.

I settled by relying on Avenir (my all time go-to typeface) – 10pt for proper dish name and 8pt for the little description underneath. The typed cards turned out well enough (and meant I wouldn’t be repeating myself throughout the meal when asked what exactly was in that dish), but they felt impersonal. Avenir is beautiful and shockingly clean, sometimes making it feel a bit cold. In this case, especially when used to describe warm, hand-made, home-cooked, family style food, Avenir  just seemed mechanical – handwriting would have extended that warm-personalized mood of the day. I doubt using a serifed font would have improved matters and I most certainly was not going anywhere near script. Even if my hand lettering is still pretty technical, at least it’s personal and the ink from the 03 Micron pen would fantastically indent the paper as it stained through to make the lovely dark lettering. Next year I’ll make the cards before I enter into the labor intensive cooking marathon and we’ll see if it really makes as big of difference as I’m theorizing.

Some things that have been going around my head of late;

Not everything which makes us feel better is good for us. Not everything which hurts may be bad. ~ Part of the conclusion of the last book I read, The Consolations of Philosophy by Alain de Botton.

An all too familiar dilemma in this blog post, perhaps I need to come out of the graphic design closet ~ Wisdom and honesty from Mr Dave Trott; as always.

This year there were 165 entries for TDC² from 26 countries resulting in 18 winning entries representing 8 countries. The jury, chaired by Fiona Ross lecturer at University of Reading, and Associate Designer to Tiro Typeworks, included Ken Barber (House Industries); Jonathan Hoefler (Hoefler & Frere-Jones); Richard Kegler (P22 Type Foundry), and Gabriel Martinez Meave (Kimera Type Foundry, Mexico).

The winning entries will be published in Typography 30: The Annual of the Type Directors Club available at the end of 2009. Join the TDC to receive the Annual free, or find it in bookstores.
