Today on Tuesday Two.Oh! we’re going to be doing something a little bit different. I usually like to focus on one tool, dig in and give you the best overview that I can. However, today I am in the midst of moving and I thought it would be a little more fun to give you a bit of a mash-up to look at.

I recently read a post by Jeff Atwood where he states that programmers are typists first and programmers second. This is something that I could never agree with.

I am a Software Developer. I should be part of the whole development cycle. That means, among other things, I design, write, test and maintain my own and other people’s code. The initial coding is possibly not more than 20% of the full cycle. In fact, according to this post by Peter Hallam, it is no more than 5%! How then can we possibly be typists first and programmers second?

A programmer is not a cog in the machine; he invents the cogs and arranges them in the machine. He is not a factory element; he is the one building the factory. Sure, there are different roles and requirements, but this is what developing software is all about.

Yes, I agree that typing is one of the fundamental requirements for programming, but a programmer is so much more.

To agree with Jeff, if you do not know how to type, it is not really that hard to learn. Get yourself a typing tutor and invest some time in practicing. However, the day programmers become nothing more than mere typists is the day I leave IT.

For those ignorant few, let me enlighten you…. Mavis Beacon is a typing tutor. It is the first one I used; and after trying few other software, Mavis Beacon still remains my favorite.

As usual, it has lessons from beginner to advanced, and also some race games where you are supposed to beat a moving object by typing fast. The program definitely is heavy, but once you get it installed, it is easy to use. An intelligent program that will track your weak spots and give exercises to correct it, Mavis Beacon is just the typing tutor you need.

And for those of you who think, you can type fast enough with two index fingers, let me tell you that I used to think the same until I learnt typing. You can not only save time, you can also show off in front of other people (mainly kids) who don’t know typing:)

Keybr.com, mentioned in a previous post, can help you practice typing, but only in English and some other languages. If you want to practice Hindi typing you can download Aasaan Typing Tutor. This is a free software that can be used to learn typing in Hindi as well as English from scratch. The software has interesting typing games along with basic to advanced lessons in typing.

Did you ever wish to have lessons to improve your typing speed? There are a few softwares available help you learn and improve your typing skills. But if you wish to practice typing without having to download and install any software all you need to do is log on to http://www.keybr.com.

Keybr is a flash-based typing instructor which allows users to practice typing in several languages including English, German, French, Spanish and Russian. The site also displays your typing speed and error rate as you type. One can choose from the lessons available on the site or set his own custom text for typing by pasting your own text in the given window. But then you cant use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + v) for pasting your text in the custom text window. You will have to use the mouse for pasting.

But the site lacks fancy games and activities to make the process fun. Hope the site will soon make typing practice more fun.
