The defacto standard on smart phone keyboards are QWERTY. The layout was derived from the traditional desktop keyboard and so the mobile user can easily make the finger to thumb transition when on the fly. Those days may be a thing of the past. Swype Inc. is set to debut a new technology that doesn’t isn’t your run of the mill clicking/pressing of miniature buttons on your touchscreen phone’s soft-keyboard.

Instead of tapping, you use your finger to “swipe” from letter to letter to increase typing speed.

I’ve got to distance myself from it, before it gets me. If I don’t focus, and work my ass off on the thing that is most important, I won’t get anywhere. Ever.

So it’s over, kids, and here I am typing as a shakily resolute and keenly terrified individual who’s not grown up and who’s ready to practice and who really just wants to stay home and love her life and her family in peace.

But Time and Nature won’t allow it. So ready or not, I’m out in less than a year. If I go to a shitty school, well hey, that’s my own fault. Goodbye, Eastman. Nice looking at your name on the website, C.I.M. I wish I would have been good enough. I’m sorry for wasting your time, Heather. I’m deeply sorry, Mrs. Ripley.

What happens, happens. If I can’t contact anyone and have them be my savior with my transcript and SAT score report today, then I am fucked. And who can or will help me, the irresponsible procrastinator who is falsely deluding herself that she can make it in the vicious world of music?

Because without strategically planning things can lead to disorganization, various problems in your company, problems with family, friends etc… If your entrepreneurial adventures have some affect on your family or close ones then create a plan; a strategic one at that.

Let your family know that this is a business and things have to get done but there will be family time soon & stick to the plan! When you have a strategic plan to make time for both: business & family, you could possibly create & maintain a sense of balance which could possibly lead to success in both areas.

Take into account those around you. Then you all can coordinate your schedules together. Take time out each week or month to have a meeting with them to discuss up coming events, plans etc…. Then decide how you all will work them out. Stick To The Plan!!

Have these things written out on paper, on your computer, personal calendar etc… Post them where every one involved can see them or be a reminder to you. That way, you all will know what’s going on (or supposed to be) in the coming days or weeks. Then you won’t have any surprises (hopefully).

In your plan you can leave some room for adjustments and problems but with your plan by your side you’ll see your way through a crisis.

Try to get more assistance around the home. Schedule out personal time, family time, quiet time for you to reflect, not too much till you start slacking in your business. Slacking off will show, your customers & associates might notice & that’s bad for business. Put aside enough time to just relax & release then come back to business refreshed. Let your family, close ones or loved ones help you out in your business in small ways.

A little strategic planning goes a long way, it can help you & benefit your business, your family & you in the long run.

This is a short week because of Thanksgiving. So we wrapped up a few loose ends in 5th and 6th grade.

Fifth graders had not been on First in Math or Typing Pal in a long time because they have been working on writing paragraphs in Word. So they did both on Monday.

Sixth graders needed to finish their science PowerPoints and start their Language Arts projects, which they did. Then they played Typing Pal and played on a variety of word game sites, including the games found at Merriam Webster’s site and the Free Rice games (this site now allows  you to choose your subject–math, art, geography, grammar, etc–awesome!).

Fourth graders worked on their scripts for the Coal Mining Character Voice Thread they are making. Next week we will record their comments and then move on to a project with Senora Ayers in Spanish.

This afternoon after school, I am doing a presentation about gmail, our new email provider after we make the big switch this weekend.

When I first saw it, I thought it was the worst game idea ever:

The top of that reads ‘TYPING of the DEAD.’  I couldn’t help laughing out loud You play an agent who wears a pack, typing the zombies and undead demons to death.  Yes, while you look cool with a trench coat and sunglasses,  you carry a keyboard throughout the cut scenes. You sit and type as words pop up under enemies.

Ridiculous.  Yet, I put a coin.  I had ridiculous amounts of fun, seemingly transported back to junior high typing class.  Zombies and winged demons groaned and exploded to the might of my type [ing].  As I felt the carpal tunnel burn, words become more complicated and unfamiliar [all the words are Japanese], and my agent fell to the forces of evil.  Alas, my typing skills were not mad enough to save the world.  I’ll remember that when the zombie apocalypse comes.

I just tried to type the word “pair” but it took me three tries.

Pare?  No.  Pear?  No.  Pair?  Yes.

And, every time that I type “flu”, I first type “flue” and have to fix it.

I’ve been touch typing since I was 15 and I’m good at spelling.  What is wrong?

I love writing. I don’t remember a time that I haven’t. My favourite pastime is to sit down with my diary, my writing journal, or here at my laptop, and just let the words fall out. During the seven year “writing hiatus”, or under- and postgraduate to other people, I found my writing in different ways. I enjoyed the challenge of finding an interesting way to talk about an assignment, or I wrote long notes about articles I had read. And I emailed, always always emailed.

When I first moved out of home, and to the city I still live in today, I wrote letters. Mostly to my mum, a few to my sister and friends. That’s totally gone now. The closest I have come is sending postcards while I’ve been overseas (and even that has been slack, since I couldn’t be bothered dealing with the Spanish mail system while I was away). But I email, LOTS. And I love it. I can spend several hours writing a big update email to my mum. I’m not writing that whole time, I’ll leave and come back to it, but I so enjoy looking for the word to describe exactly how an event makes me feel. I like to think she appreciates that.

It only becomes hard when people aren’t such avid email writers back. I often feel bad that someone takes two weeks to reply, and then I in turn will reply within a day. It’s nothing against them and their schedules, I just like to write. I like to connect with people, and honestly, if I didn’t reply immediately I probably wouldn’t reply at all.

I’m finding the same thing with writing these blog posts. I open a new document in word, write to my heart’s content, then save it and come back for edits and publishing later. It becomes addictive. I finish one post, close it, and five minutes later I have a new document open for a new post. It’s not like I have that much to say, it’s the act of putting words onto paper (or a white Microsoft screen) and seeing something come from nothing. Time can fly very quickly, and before I know it I’m late for a meeting, or yet another hour has gone by without me adding anything to the “real work” document I also have open.

One year at school I signed up for Geography. I took two classes, maybe three, and then I decided it wasn’t for me and I dropped out. I took Typing class instead. The Geography teacher was livid, and apparently still remembers it to this day, “she dropped Geography to take Typing?” I’ve always maintained, and even more so today, that the one year of Typing was far more beneficial than any Geography could have been. I can touch type so well that in typing tests I regularly come out within the range a secretary might be expected to maintain. I’ve earnt off typing, as I once had a job entering data for a government department, and I could not fathom the number of words I have typed in my academic career, through assignments, progress reports, funding applications, and countless emails. And now that I am writing for pleasure, possibly one day for work, what better than to be able to type fast enough to keep up with my thoughts?

I do like writing by hand, I like the thought and care it takes to carve out each letter, each word, each sentence. I like seeing how my handwriting gets rushed and urgent when I am at an exciting part of a story; or the doodles in my diary when I am writing about something that sends me into a daydream. But sometimes it’s just not enough. Typing straight into a PC allows faster spell checking, faster fact-finding (since Wikipedia is always nearby), and I can almost type as fast as the thoughts come. Almost.

Would that Geography class have been quite so beneficial to my life and career? I don’t believe so, though my old Geography teacher might like to differ.

I’ve had lower back pain all week, now if I can just figure out how to get rid of that I’ll be feeling much better!

I was taught to type at school on an Imperial with painted out keys. As a result I can touch-type, though I am nowhere near as accurate as I used to be. It can be fun though: if someone interrupts me when I’m on a roll, I find myself gazing politely at them while we talk and typing at 60-65 wpm. It disconcerts them for some reason. Can’t think why.

There is a downside though. Because I learned to type on a typewriter my thumb goes tap-tap on the space-bar immediately after my right ring finger hits the full stop.(tap-tap) In those dim and distant days we were taught to put a double space after a full stop, and try as I might, my thumb still does.(tap-tap)

Most of the time this isn’t a problem.(tap-tap) Word-processing programmes were developed for typists, and can cope with the double-space.(tap-tap) Web pages are different.(tap-tap) WordPress handles the double-space particularly badly, frequently splitting them and putting one of them at the start of a line and messing up the left justification.(tap-tap)

This annoys me.(tap-tap).

Considerably.(tap-tap).

And there isn’t even a decent find-and-replace feature in WP.(tap-tap). If I want rid of those pesky double-spaces I have to copy and paste into Notepad from the HTML editor and then search and replace to get rid of them.(tap-tap) Not a big deal, but annoying nonetheless.(tap-tap) And unfortunately that clunky work-around is massively easier than getting my thumb to change the habit of over half a lifetime.
