I made my decision: I’m keeping my Touch. Now I won’t do like with my Treo so I will sell my TyTN right away before it loses value. I’m starting the auction at 100$ (it’s low, really low) and it will end in 7 days.

OMG. I just can’t help it. Although I just got my Nokia E71 a few months back, I just have to get my hands on one of those HTCs! And here’s mine–after much though on whether to get the HTC phone same as Jenny–I finally decided to get myself an HTC Hermes!

I was really considering HTC Touch in Wasabi Green but upon checking out the online reviews, I guess HTC Touch is just an eye candy and surely comes less in functionality. So, I got myself this slide qwerty phone that runs on WM6.1 and scores an average of about 8/10 in all of the online reviews I’ve read. And since my unit is the ones you get from Japan–but luckily runs on an english platform–my Hermes is Japanese-ly branded as SoftBank X01HT.

I’ve never really been exposed to handling Windows Mobile platform, so this thing really needs a lot of getting used to. But so far, I’m so loving it! It’s just so techy it makes me drool even if my hands already are all over it! LoL.

I’ve already set up my mobile IM programs, my net browsers, videocon applications, themes, and I’m still looking for more useful stuff to put in. It won’t be such a problem to load stuff here since it’s packed with a 2gb microSD (just like E71!).

I haven’t done much but to set the basic settings like wifi and some application installations… but I have one problem though, I can’t seem to make the bluetooth connection with my laptop work. So I’d have to check on that.

Anyway, I’m still checking this nifty gadget out and still doing some experimenting.. so far, I’m loving the threaded SMS feature… hm.. maybe I can give you a follow up post on this after a few days, ok?

I am almost done with setting up my phone. I also found a few cool applications while looking for the ones I already had. Here’s some you just can’t go past:

Youtubeplay, a free program to search and watch youtube videos. It works much better than the TCPMP plugin and the other similar stuff.

Samulos, a game that looks a lot like lumines but with some tetris elements. A really fun game!

Window Media Reloaded Skin, a skin for WMP mobile that makes it look a bit more like Windows Media 11 on Vista.

Pocket Gravity, a little app that allows you to draw shapes and watch them deal with gravity. I couldn’t drop it for an hour. You must try this!

VJCandela allows you to use the phone’s camera LED as a flashlight. It works flawlessly and I used it quite often.

I also skinned my dialpad since the standard one is freakin’ ugly.

I just received another replacement phone from Rogers to replace my broken TyTN. This time it doesn’t look refurbished and it came with all of the accessories. This means another night killed to reinstall Windows Mobile 6, all of my applications, all of my music, all of my setups…

The worst part is that I still love this buggy little piece of shiny crap. Just TRY to find a phone that lets you carry and use all of your music, a few movies, your office documents, your contacts, your agenda, your pictures, dozens of games and all the rest. I bet no Crackberry can do all of that half as well is my Pocket PC does.

Let’s hope this one won’t break… or at least not beyond the 3 additional months of warranty!

Sono stato per giorni alla ricerca di una pcmcia o una connect card usb, hsdpa (high speed downlink packet access), ma mi è stata messa la pulce nell’orecchio :” Hai un TyTN è hsdpa, perché non usare questo? “

Collegare il TyTN con la usb, sfruttando la connessione TIM o un qualsiasi altro gestore è  semplicissimo, ma vediamo come fare…

Premessa:

Lato TyTN: il tutto e’ stato testato con wm6
Lato Ubuntu: se avete installato wicd, io personalmente ho incontrato grosse difficoltà quindi la procedura è testata e funzionante usando network-manager-gnome.

Detto questo… installiamo subversion:

sudo apt-get install subversion

completata l’installazione, scarichiamo i sorgenti dei moduli usb di synce:

svn co https://synce.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/synce/trunk/usb-rndis-lite

entriamo nella directory:

cd usb-rndis-lite

e compiliamo i moduli

make

usiamo lo script gia’ configurato che rimuove i vecchi moduli del kernel in uso.

sudo ./clean.sh

e installiamo quelli compilati

sudo make install

abbiamo finito!

heheh si, ora le operazioni da fare sono queste

1) collegare il cavo usb al tytn e al pc
2) attivare la connessione condivisa sul nostro TyTN,
3) In automatico dovrebbe assegnare l’ip ed essere tutto funzionante, se cosi non fosse nella applet di NetworkManager ci sara’ Rete Cablata  (Unknown Usb Interface)

Always the Queen of the Impulse Buy, I just picked up an HTC Touch from my local Orange Store. I fell in love with its dinky size and TouchFlo interface. One pleasant surprise when I got home home was to find that it is not the HTC Elf but an Elfin. The main difference being that the Elf has 64mb RAM 128mb ROM, the Elfin has double – 128mb RAM 256mb ROM.

The phone was locked to Orange of course, but I unlocked it straight away to take my o2 sim. (yes o2, as I had to port my number from Three as the coverage turned out to be atrocious). I have loaded up with programs and am enjoying using the Touch, so far. I have now put my TMO sim back in the TyTn where it belongs (At least until the contract is up in October…..then hopefully I can get down to just one phone number!).

One thing I have decided to do is sort out a lot of my gadgets & phones and sell them on to good homes. I have cupboards full of stuff. I think I need an eBay shop!!

To paraphrase the character from “The Fast Show” – This week, I have been mainly flashing the TyTn!

Now that my MDA Vario II is well out of warranty, I can safely admit to having played with the many ROMs around. Many have “issues”, even the latest WM6 upgrade from HTC (the official T-Mobile upgrade) proved to be a liability. Dead battery within hours of a full charge, no bluetooth, very poor reception, I could go on. About the best of the bunch for me was Black Majik, so this week I have gone back to Black. Now the battery is only on 80% at the end of a hard day (including a little wifi). Bluetooth is still an annoying bug, but I can live with it as the TyTn has IR.

Having upgraded the ROM I had to reload all the gubbins via backup (SPB Backup, great for this job) and since I run most of my programs from the SD card I just had to add the shortcuts to the start menu from the backup file on the card that I made prior to re-flashing (a real time saver).

Programs that are best reloaded on to the phone itself include SPB Mobile Shell (I just upgraded from the first version to version 2.1) an excellent  program that gives a real TouchFlo feel to the interface. Phatnotes and SplashID have to sync with their desktop equivalents so they shouldn’t go on the card either (I have older versions).

Even though the TyTn has persistent memory I can’t emphasis enough that you should still make backups. SPB Backup is very versatile. I also copy my SD card to my PC for extra peace of mind.

You may know how much I love Astraware’s games for Pocket PC. Smartphone and Palm OS. I just treated myself to a copy of their “Casino”. The pack actually comprises quite a few Vegas style games, BlackJack, Poker, Roulette, Craps (excuse me) and the old one armed banditos. Astraware’s games are always a joy to look at and the game play quite satisfying, I have never played Roulette before, I love watching the little wheel spin (little things please my little mind). As with all their games, Astraware have trial versions available for download before you buy. Astraware.com.

It only lasted 8 days, but the affair is definitely over. I turned the Skypephone on this morning to find the flashing screen of death (the Three logo on, now off, now on, you get the idea)

I took it back to the store where the sales staff didn’t seem particularly surprised. They offered me an exchange but once bitten…… I got a refund. When I got home from the store I thought it best to change all my passwords at MSN, Skype etc, just in case the phone is ever resurrected (better safe than sorry).

I kept the 3 sim because I had all my contacts on it, but what to do with it? I remembered my TyTn languishing in a draw and tried the sim in that. Success. I fiddled with the internet, voicemail, and mms settings and they all work OK.

So today I went ahead and ported my precious number over to Three, I can always move again if it all ends in tears.
