Heute waren wir zur U3 mit Emily beim Kinderarzt. Der Kinderarzt ist nicht so dolle. Ein alter Sack, russischer Abstammung und spricht sehr schlecht deutsch. Mal gucken, ob wir uns nicht einen anderen suchen.

Die Untersuchung war nicht lang, aber sehr positiv. Die kleine Kugel ist kerngesund und altersgerecht entwickelt. Das Gewicht *ähem* ist jetzt 4750 Gramm. In vier Tagen 210 Gramm, das ist ganz schön viel. Die Länge ist jetzt 54 cm und Kopfumfang 37 cm. Wir sind sehr stolz und zufrieden. Zur Hüftsono müssen wir in die Kinderklinik. Der Termin ist am 19.11.

Ein Bild von gestern hab’ ich noch. Wer schon mal in Berlin war weiß, kein U-Bahnhof sieht aus wie der andere. Dieses Bild (und weitere die kommen) stammt vom Bahnhof Rüdesheimer Platz (U3). Offiziell gerahmte Graffiti schmücken hier die Wände. Mir gefiel die "Entwerterschlange" besonders gut.

I recently purchased a Sandisk Cruzer Micro (4GB) USB drive. It comes with U3 on it, and I absolutely love this little piece of software! Now, I do realize that it is a windows-only option, proprietary code, yada, yada, yada.. but for my requirements (and a vast majority of you, I’m sure), it is a great fit.

U3 drives are specially formatted and they actually contain a partition that separates the drive into two – A normal storage area, and a read-only part that emulates a CD containing the U3 code. CD emulation (ISO) is used on the partition to ‘trick’ the windows host into launching the ‘autorun’ file and displaying the launchpad GUI.

What this effectively means is that you cannot buy a normal USB drive and force it to run U3 by installing a program. You do have the option of deleting U3 from your drive though.

PortableApps is a competing open-source, free technology and has a similar feature set – Any application built for PortableApps can be very easily converted to be U3 compliant

When you load the U3 drive, it automatically opens the U3 launcher applet (after authentication of course.. another feature that I think is absolutely necessary in a tiny device with a huge potential to fall into the wrong hands). This is what my U3 launcher looks like:

Over the months, I have collected a bunch of (mostly freeware) programs on my USB drive that I highly recommend:

1. KeePass 2.08: This is an excellent password management suite. Definitely a must-have if you want to avoid sticking post-its all over your workplace
2. Pidgin: A free universal chat client. Connects to a whole gamut of talk services. I use it to chat on AIM, Yahoo, Google, and our company XMPP chat.
3. Irfanview: Awesome, lightweight image editing software. Great for cropping, reducing file size, adjusting brightness/contrast etc. I use this all the time for resizing/resampling images produced by my 10 MP camera into a more manageable 70 KB before emailing
4. Chrome: Blazing fast Internet browser (loads much faster than FireFox). It has been converted to a portable format by a programmer in Denmark. It also includes an updater that you can use to download the latest and greatest version of Chrome (sweet!). Here is a tip: When you are creating the U3 software using PackageFactory, use IncognitoLoader.exe instead of the ChromeLoader.exe. This will ensure that your drive space is conserved. Chrome has no mechanism for setting a ceiling on the cache size.. So, it can very easily flood your USB drive (Of course you can clear your cache often, but using incognito mode is so much cleaner and easier!). Also, since there is no file caching in incognito mode, browsing speed is noticeably improved.
5. Windows Live writer: The best blogging software. Period. Seamlessly connects to my WordPress account and helps me create draft blogs offline.
6. VLC Media player : I have yet to come across a file format that VLC player has refused to play!
7. uTorrent : Tiny tiny program which does a lot! Prior to using this 600KB program, I was using Azureus, a 50 MB behemoth!
8. Notepad++: Offers color formatting for most code.. Love the easily extensible plugin architecture (especially HexEditor)
9. PackageFactory: Easily make apps U3 compatible.
10. CoreFTP: Full featured light-weight GUI FTP client with support for SSL

It turns out, it is “really-really-ridiculously” easy to create your own U3 applications! The good folks at eure.ca have made available a tiny application named “PackageFactory” that does this magic (free of cost!).

Note that the application you are trying to convert to U3 must be self contained. i.e., It should not depend on the registry and/or be tied to absolute directories. Applications that are built for PortableApps are therefore excellent candidates for conversion to U3.

(Please be aware that you can create a “thinstall” of ANY application.. and then convert the resulting .exe file into a U3p file using PackageFactory!).

Here’s an example of how you can use PackageFactory to create a U3 version of the wildly popular password storage tool KeePass:

1. Download and install PackageFactory

2. Download the Zip package of the latest version of KeePass (ver 2.08 as of this writing) from the KeePass website

3. Extract all the contents of the downloaded zip file into a folder on your computer:

4. Launch PackageFactory :

5. Drag and drop the KeePass.exe file from the downloaded folder into the area marked for the purpose on the PackageFactory screen. Add/Edit the Program name and description fields as required, and then click on the “Create” arrow:

6. The program then creates a .u3p file and prompts for a location to store the newly created file.. Select your desktop, and hit the “Save” button.

7. Click on the U3 icon on your taskbar. Then, click on “Add Programs” and select “Install from my Computer”:

8. In the “Open File” dialog box that pops up, select the keepass.u3p file that you created (Step 6)

9. This will create the necessary scaffolding on the portable/USB device for “Keepass” … note that the application is still not ready to launch .. We have not yet added the required support files.

10. Navigate to the System/Apps folder on your U3 device, and locate the folder containing the KeePass.u3p file(This is a hidden folder.. so, you may need to update your folder options to show hidden files). It should look like:

11. Copy the remaining KeePass support files from the extracted Zip file into the “Data” subfolder (K:\System\Apps\60F08E21-C250-4FDD-A804-CA25DD2892E2\Data in my case). Finally, the folder should contain ALL the files (and folders) that were present in the Un-Zipped (step 3 above):

That’s it! You should now be able to launch KeePass from your U3 Launch applet!

Tip: You can actually convert the PackageFactory application into a U3 file using the same process and keep it handy on your USB device for future projects

This is the very first post! So I am proud to present one of my absolute favorite bands, and all time favorite emo band, Shoulder. This band was from London, Ontario from about 1994 to 1999. Bryan Webb (guitar, vocals) and (Paul Bright, guitarist) were doing As We Speak just before evolving into Shoulder (which later involved into Constantines with a slight line-up change of bassist) Their first release was the “Touch” LP put out on Conquer the World and Winter Records (ran by Paul Bright). Not long after that the same labels (though Winter had now changed name to Rhythm of Sickness) put out their 7″ “Kindling”. After this the band must of gotten around because in 1997 Moo Cow pressed a split 7″ which featured Morning Again on the other side (which happens to be my favorite hardcore band, pretty lucky release for me eh ).

The rest of their appearances were on compilations after that, but I haven’t heard of many. A song on “The Difference Between Us” from Good Fellow, a song on “The Emo Diaries 3″ on Deep Elm, and a song on “15 Years” from CTW. They were also due to be on the Struggle compilation “Benefit for the Buffalo Animal Defense League” but a guy from Grade told me he doubts it ever came out (if you can differ, please hit me up!).

(AvH) Offiziell heisst es zwar, dass alle die gleichen Chancen auf einen U3-Platz haben aber das stimmt natürlich nicht. Inoffiziell wird Eltern geraten sich bei möglichst vielen, mindestens zehn bis zwanzig Kindergärten in der Stadt um einen Platz zu bewerben… was natürlich zur Folge hat, dass alle Eltern, die für ihr Kind einen Platz haben wollen, fleissig Bewerbungen schreiben und durch die Stadt schicken. Wer sich jetzt fragt, warum es kein koordiniertes, zentrales Vergabeverfahren gibt, der beschreitet einen gedanklichen Irrweg, denn dann hätte ja irgendjemand bei der Stadt systematisch und logisch an die Sache rangehen müssen – und das kann man ja nicht verlangen von vornehmlich durch Steueren und Abgaben finanzierte Mitarbeiter, oder?

Glücklicher Gewinner eines U3-Platzes

Die Folge:  Nach der schriftlichen Bewerbungsrunde kommt, wenn man als Elternpaar Glück hat, die persönliche Vorstellung.  Jetzt kommt es darauf an, einen Spitzeneindruck bei der Kita-Leitung zu hinterlassen – bloss nichts Falsches sagen, um nicht frühzeitig ausgesiebt zu werden. D.h. heucheln um jeden Preis – bei konfessionellen Kindergärten geht das so:  “natürlich vermitteln wir unserem Kind in erster Linie christliche Werte”, “ja, der Pabst, der ist toll”, “Kindergottestdienst?! Ja, jetzt wo Sie es sagen. Da müssen wir unbedingt hin” – bei städtischen oder sonstigen Trägern so “Nein, nein. Mit Kirche haben wir nix am Hut”, “Der liegt aber toll der Kindergarten und so ein schönes pädagogisches Konzept” usw.

Selbstverständlich wollen Eltern – vor allem wenn sie beide berufstätig sind – ihr Kind gut untergebracht und aufgehoben wissen, ein so entwürdigendes, unkoordiniertes Auswahlverfahren bei dem Konfession, Wohnort, Familienstammbaum – “schon bei der Schlacht von Worringen dabei” und persönliche Beziehungen “ich bin übrigens  mit dem Spieß der Schützenbruderschaft per Du”  eine wesentliche Rolle spielen, gehört schnellstens abgeschafft.

Die Waldsiedlung Zehlendorf oder auch Siedlung “Onkel Toms Hütte” liegt beiderseits der Argentinischen Allee und angrenzenden Strassen. Sie zählt zu den herausragendsten architektonisch, sowie städtebaulichen Leistungen der Zeit der Weimarer Republik und ist mit über 2000 Wohnungen ein Musterbeispiel des Sozialen Wohnungsbaus der 20er Jahre. Ausgewählt wurde ein landschaftlich reizvolles Gebiet inmitten von Kiefern und Birken, am Rande des Grunewalds. Eigentümer war damals sowie auch heute: die GEHAG.

Neben dem Architekten Bruno Taut wurden auch Hugo Häring und Otto Rudolf Salvisberg in das Vorhaben mit einbezogen.
Der größte Teil der Pläne aber geht auf Bruno Taut zurück, der ja schon mehr oder weniger als “Hausarchitekt” der GEHAG arbeitete. Bekanntestes Gebäude ist der sog. “Peitschenknall, welches sich über eine Länge von 400 Metern entlang der U- Bahnlinie 3 erstreckt.
Gebaut wurde von 1926 bis 1930. Die U3, damals noch als A2 bekannt, endete am Thielplatz und wurde in der gleichen Zeit bis zur Krummen Lanke verlängert. Der U-Bahnhof Onkel Toms Hütte ist ein Entwurf von Salvisberg und steht wie die Waldsiedlung unter Denkmalschutz.

Seit den 80er Jahren wird hier nach und nach restauriert und auch die Originalfarben der Fenster und Außenfassaden wiederhergestellt. Bruno Tauts Vorliebe für Farben war bekannt, so wurden seine Siedlungen mitunter “Tuschkastensiedlung” oder “Papageiensiedlung” genannt. Heute strahlen ein Großteil der Fassaden wieder in gelb, hellblau,dunkelrot und grün.
Bruno Taut, dem wir außerdem noch z.B die Hufeisensiedlung in Berlin zu verdanken haben, emigrierte 1936 in die Türkei, nachdem die Nazis ihn als “Kulturbolschewisten” abgestempelt hatten. Dort verstarb er, erst 58 jährig an den Folgen seines Asthmaleidens im Jahr 1938.

Ich erwarte von meinem Praktikum…

I. Das ich nähere Einblicke in den Beruf bekomme, obwohl ich letztes Jahr schon einmal ein Betriebspraktikum in einer anderen Kindertagesstätte absolviert habe, möchte ich die Einblicke in den sozialen Bereich in Kindergartenform vertiefen.

II. Wie ich bereits schon erwähnt habe, habe ich schon einmal ein Betriebspraktikum in einer Kindertagesstätte absolviert, weil mir das Arbeiten mit Kindern sehr viel Freude bereitet. Und weil ich bei dem zweiten Betrieb keinen der Mitarbeiter privat kannte, dass bei dem ersten Praktikum nicht der fall war, denn dort ging ich zum Kindergarten, und kannte die Leiterin.

III. Ich habe zunächst überlegt was ich machen möchte, hab dann bei grossen Kindergärten nachgefragt (Uniklinikum Marburg; Kindergarten „Weisser Stein” in Wehrda), doch diese Betriebe hatten schon ausreichend Praktikanten. Dann bin ich auf den Kindergarten Roßdorf gestoßen, weil ich gehört habe, dass dort auch u3 Kinder sind (u3 Kinder = Kinder unter 3 Jahren). IV. Ich möchte natürlich erfahren wie man mit u3 Kindern umgeht und wie man sie besser verstehen. mit ihnen reden , und sie ernster nehmen kann etc.

1. Woche vom 14.01.2009 bis 21.01.2009

Am ersten Tag meines Praktikums war ich sehr aufgeregt, wurde aber von mein, Betreuerin herzlich empfangen. Zuerst hat mir Fr. Preis das „Team” vorgestellt t die Räumlichkeiten bekannt gemacht. Ich durfte mir die drei Gruppen anschauen und mal kurz „hallo” sagen. Nach ei Weile ging ich dann in meine Gruppe, die „Sternen” Gruppe, und von da an hab ich mich mit den Kindern bekannt gemacht. Den größten Teil der ersten Woche habe ich damit verbracht, mit den Kindern Zeit zu verbringen und sie näher kennen zulernen; beim spielen, vorlesen oder bei einfachen Unterhaltungen.

2. Woche vom 21.01.2009 bis 28.01.2009

In der zweiten Woche lief schon alles viel leichter, dann hatte ich schon das Vertrauen der meisten Kinder gewonnen und konnte mit ihnen spielen und auch rumtoben oder kitzeln, was die Kinder sehr begeisterte und meine Kolleginnen auch. Der einzige Nachteil war, dass die Kinder mich ständig verfolgten, sogar wenn ich auf Toilette musste, was ich doch sehr lustig fande. Manche Kinder kamen mit Büchern an, die anderen mit Brettspielen, aber die meisten wollten unbedingt „rumalbern”, dass das vor dem Mittagsschlaf doch se angebracht war. Die Kinder sind sofort eingeschlafen ohne sich zu weigern, leider durfte ich kein Mittagsschlaf machen. Die zwei Wochen gingen leider sehr schnell um, und wir haben am letzten Mittwoch noch mit Kuchen Abschied gefeiert. Es fiel mir schwer, denn ich sah wie manch Kinder traurig waren.

Abschlussbetrachtung

Mir ist eigentlich das meiste ziemlich einfach gefallen, es gab nichts wo ich sage kann, dass ich die Vorraussetzungen nicht erfüllen konnte, doch ich muss leide gestehen, dass es manchmal sehr nervenaufreibend war. Ich habe auch gelernt, dass man alle Kinder ernst nehmen sollte, egal wie alt de oder diejenige ist. Wenn man sich Zeit nimmt, und auf Augenhöhe der Kinder geht, kann man die „Probleme” besser nachvollziehen. Der Beruf Erzieher gefällt mir sehr gut, weil mir das Arbeiten mit kleinen Kinder einfach sehr große Freude bereitet und ich könnte mir auch vorstellen später de Beruf auszuüben. Obwohl mir auch die Arbeit mit schwer erziehbaren Kindern o Jugendlichen Spaß machen würde. In meinem Betrieb habe ich sehr viele positive Erfahrungen gesammelt, doch leider auch eine kleine negative Erfahrung mit einem etwas sehr aggressiven Kind der andere Kinder geschlagen hat. Er ließ sich schwer positiv umstimmen von seine „Wutattacken”. Meine Erwartungen wurden bei dem Betriebspraktikum sehr hoch erfüllt, wie ich bereits schon erwähnte, ist das schon mein zweites Praktikum als Erzieher und habe zum größten teil die Gewissheit, dass ich später einmal auch diesen Beruf ausüben möchte, weil Kinder nicht nur von Erwachsenen lernen, sondern auch Erwachsene von Kindern.

I bought a SanDisk 8GB Cruzer micro today. It’s quite pretty, and I like the sliding design, but it came with U3, a portable application platform. Sounds good, you say, until you realize that it’s a closed system, which makes it nigh impossible for casual developers to create portable apps for the platform. Also, it’s got annoying pop-ups. It had to be nuked.

This post is written in rambly prose, but I’ve bolded the main points.

The U3 Launchpad came with an uninstall utility. But it didn’t work, because whenever I tried it Windows simply told me that “Launchpad Removal Program has stopped working”. I tried this a couple of times, both with the uninstaller on the U3 Launchpad itself as well as uninstallers U3Uninstall.exe and launchpadremoval.exe from the SanDisk website and MyDigitalLife (if you need them, go do a search for the filenames). Same problem.

So I disabled the Launchpad from auto-starting (right-click the U3 icon in the system tray), removed the drive, and then plugged in the drive again. This time U3Uninstall.exe and launchpadremoval.exe agreed to run, but now they told me that “this program only supports one U3 drive removal” even though I only had one disk plugged in.

Turns out that the uninstaller recognizes all disk drives on the system as U3. Dumb, I know. I had to go to Device Manager > Disk Drives and disable all the other drives (my memory card readers). You’ll have to leave the U3 thumbdrive enabled, of course.

Run the uninstall utility again. Make sure you have admin privileges!
