Sie enthalten laut Amnesty International USA Zeilen wie: „I’m dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays“ („Ich träume von einem neuen Jamaika, wo sämtliche Schwulen hingerichtet werden“).

We just need fi tell the people dem the right ting because I not supporting a gay lifestyle because it’s not wholesome to me.“ Manche Beobachter in der jamaikanischen Presse sehen in seiner Aussage, es sei nicht nötig, Schwule zu töten, die Aussage, es sei “falsch”, dies zu tun.

The world is in trouble

Anytime Buju Banton come

Batty boy get up and run

ah gunshot in ah head man

Tell dem crew… it’s like

Boom bye bye, in a batty boy head,

Rude boy nah promote no nasty man,

them hafi dead.

Breakfast In Bed is an old R’n'B song by Eddie Hinton and Donnie Fritts that was popularized by Dusty Springfield in 1969. The British Reggae band UB40 covered it on their 1988 album, the creatively titled UB40. The female vocal is Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde in soft mode, one of several collaborations. The video? I don’t know…It looks like part of some movie or it could be that it’s supposed to have random snippets of conversation and no sync with the music. I’ve been listening to UB40 for years, and until now I didn’t even know which one of them was the singer. It had to be the dweeby one, dinnit.

Singer/songwriter Eddy Grant (born Edward Montague Grant in 1948) is about to embark on a British tour in the United Kingdom with several solo concerts and others in conjunction with soft-reggae legends UB40 (of “Red Red Wine” fame). The 61-year-old, born in Guyana but raised in London, first won fame in the late 1960s with chart-topping group The Equals (“Baby Come Back” was a number one hit in 1968). He had worldwide hits in the 1980s with songs such as “Electric Avenue” and “I Don’t Wanna Dance.” This blogger, for one, will never forget Grant’s boundless energy, spectacular voice, and his performance of my favorite song, “Living on the Front Line” (and, OK, his then trademark leather outfit) on stage at Cornell University some years ago . . . well, let’s just say, sometime in the 80s.

Here is part of his interview with the UK’s Press Association:

Why have you decided now is the time to go out on tour?

It all started last year when I performed at a Mandela Concert, Glastonbury and Womad (music festivals). As a result I decided having sold all of these records all of these years and not having played to a significant number of the people who bought them, I should really go out and make their acquaintance. I’ve missed all of the fantastic times of being out on the road with the band and stuff.

Is it true that, given any opportunity, you’ll talk about the political issues?

Well, I’m one of the artists who formed the long line of protest writers, and it’s not something I actually promote, but that is the way I write – apart from the love songs.

What issues are important to you at the moment?

There are many issues. But I don’t just write for the sake of writing. If something happens politically which upsets my sensibilities, then eventually that will come out in a song. I don’t just sit there and think, ‘Oh there’s something happening in Afghanistan, I’ve got to write about that’ – I’m not that kind of writer. But if there is a particular injustice highlighted in the media which particularly catches my attention, I’ll write about it. [. . .]

Why did you decide to move to the Caribbean rather than stay in the UK?

Because I’d always promised myself if I had kids I’d like to see them educated in the Caribbean like I was, and to have that difference of lifestyle. So we moved out there in 1981. I left what had become my home country and decided to take my children and my wife back to Barbados.

What’s it like coming back to the UK?

England has a special place in my life because half of my life has been spent here and half of my education has been here, so I’m a bi-functional person. I function just as well in the England society as I do in the Caribbean society, and I don’t really put one in front of the other necessarily because there is no need. I get by in both environments.

For Grant’s “Living on the Front Line,” see

Hello once again good people of blogworld. I felt that it was about time I posted again as it’

Hello once again good people of blogworld. I felt that it was about time I posted again as it’s been nearly a month, my excuse if you’re interested is that I started a new job just about a month ago and I have been just a little busy. But enough of that and on with the post!

Have you read in the press about the celebrations accompanying the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall? I can’t believe that it was 20 years ago, can you? Anyway part of the celebrations involved a concert near the site of the old east-west barrier which included a twenty minute set from U2. The whole shebang was promoted and I believe set up by MTV. I assume that they have some highly paid and highly skilled PR people working for them. Highly paid maybe but highly skilled I doubt very much. Why do I draw this conclusion? Well largely because in their infinite wisdom MTV decided to ensure that the 10,000 ticket holders were going to be the only people that would see the stage. How did they do this? Well they built a wall of course! Did no one see the irony in this? Many German Radio Stations with tickets to give away in competitions sent them back in protest and I must say that I don’t blame them. You can read about it here

Even the combined weight of the giant members of U2 couldn't crush MTV's Berlin Wall

It’s been a while since I last posted any criticism of the banking industry, but now those poor impoverished bankers (apologies I should have started that with a W rather than a B shouldn’t I?) are getting close to their bonus levels of old the time is surely ripe. What I will never understand is how a bunch of people who came close to destroying the whole industry and have caused serious damage to the world economy should be paid any form of bonus? What the f*ck is that all about. Anyway if that wasn’t bad enough it has been brought to my attention that Wall Street Banks Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley have bullied their way to the front of the queue for the swine flu vaccine H1N1. At the same time many health care workers, pregnant women and people at risk are still waiting. Click here to read the story. It used to be said that in the event of a nuclear catastrophe in the world the creatures that would survive and thrive in post apocalyptic times would be rats and cockroaches. I believe that is still essentially true, however I think that bankers should also be added to that list although perhaps they are just rats and cockroaches already! What do you think? OK as I have said many times before that this is essentially a music blog so let me bring so music into it, something relevant to the story of course.

“Rat In Mi Kitchen” – UB40. The band bought their first instruments with £4,000 compensation that former lead singer Ali Campbell received from injuries he received in a bar fight as a 17-year-old. Compensation people, not a bonus ok!

“Reward” – Teardrop Explodes. One of the bands early singles was “Bouncing Babies” which actually had its own tribute song released by the Freshies, “I Can’t Get Bouncing Babies By The Teardrop Explodes“

A banker with swine flu.........'nuff said!

Another story in yesterdays newspaper was about yet another failure in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Cerne. It has just been returned to service after nearly a year out of action and £23 million of repairs following a serious electrical fault in September 2008. The LHC in simple terms is trying to recreate conditions that existed just before the Big Bang that created the universe billions of years ago. The search for the elusive ‘god particle’ was stopped this time by another power cut. How was this caused? Well when an LHC support worker found the source of the outage he found a piece of bread being eaten by a bird! I wonder if the bread was the remains of an LHC workers lunch or was it manna from heaven? I thought I’d include the last comment to placate any creationists that might be reading this, you’re wrong but at least I placated you! You can read the Guardian’s article on this incident by clicking here. I must add that this is also one of the headlines of the year too! Big Bang Goes Phut As Bird Drops Baguette Into Cern Machinery!

This time those boffins at the large hadron collider in Cern had made sure that their plans for a big bang would not be upset by some bird brained idea. Crustice had to be seen to be done

“Danger High Voltage” – Electric Six. A rather excellent song and listen out for the counter point vocal from none other than Jack White off of the White Stripes, Raconteurs and Dead Weather

And finally I simply have to mention ITV’s X Factor, sadly I have been hooked beyond the point where all the no hopers have gone (well except for john and Edward, although more about them later). Finally this week John and Edward (or Jedward as the tabloids have christened them) made it into the bottom two this weekend. I would have expected Simon Cowell to use his casting vote to cast them out, but he chose to put it to the public vote which meant that Lucie Jones leaves the show. I never have had any respect for Louis Walsh but I used to maintain a degree of respect for Mr Cowell. However that has completely gone now. Given the opportunity to rid us of Jedward he copped out, or did he simply want to get rid of the act most likely to beat one of the acts he is mentoring. At this point I really hope that Jedward win the competition, not because I think that they have any talent or deserve to win, but simply because that would mean Mr Cowell would have to give these two walking toilet brushes a £1 million recording contract. Perhaps that would finally kill off awful TV shows like X Factor. Big Brother is dead now let’s kill the X Factor!

John and Edward

My first proper day of my self-imposed hiatus from the circle of my net friends. I decided to leave

My first proper day of my self-imposed hiatus from the circle of my net friends. I decided to leave everything because I felt that my real-priorities were getting sidelined and I was getting deflected from the path which I decided to follow at the start of this school session. So here I am without any contact with the virtual friends I have created over the past 7 months. The time now is 2:12 AM, and I have decided to pen down, err type down how I am spending my days without the virtual frolic. I will basically write what I have done today and how much I missed Facebook and Orkut and all the pals there. I woke up today at 11:45 AM, after staying awake till 5 AM last night because I was listening to Music. Now as I write this on my cell the song by UB40 “Red Red Wine” is playing. The fact that I am a Music addict is very well known. So back to waking up, Mom woke me up forcefully because I wanted to sleep some more. But she kept the Tea cup in front of me. As it stands, I cannot resist the temptation of Tea made by Maa. So I woke up had my tea and breakfast. Today was always supposed to be a dry day for me being Saturday. And on this particular day of the week, we have completely vegetarian food at our home. I cannot digest Veg food. I simple hate it to the extent that I would rather starve all day than take in that stale Potato Curry and Soybeans. Yikes! So I had breakfast and suddenly realized that I had nothing to do. I always have something to pass my time by with.

But today even the great lure of TV did not make life easy for me. But still I was sitting in my Bed scrolling through all the Channels looking for something interesting. I was always coming back to the Fox History Channel because they were airing back-to-back episodes of ‘Neanderthal.’ I don’t want to start writing about the show now. I was also anticipating the arrival of my new Biology teacher. Today was supposed to be her first class. I had lunch. Painstakingly i.e. Then I again came back to the ‘Idiot Box.’ I was feeling really sleepy due to the lack of a proper sleep but did not want to sleep because I knew if the Bio Miss arrives and I go to her with a sleepy-head then I would not be able to concentrate much and I may end up ruining my image. So I lay down in the bed seeing TV and shifting between two films. Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam was running on Colors and another film was on at Sony. I was also periodically coming back to the News Channels. I am a News Addict and like to keep in touch with things. India will face the Aussies in the first match tomorrow. Deshmukh may be back as the Maharashtra CM. Probably, Genie will fulfill that wish of his. Buddha faces flak for negotiating with the Maoists. I think if he was not tolerant and we lost the Cop he would have faced flak for being so intolerant. He has been in a sticky situation for the past two years.

As I lay there in my bed waiting for Urbi Miss I was expecting something good from her considering she is a young teacher and is a newly graduate student. She arrived at 6:25 PM when I had lost all hope of her actually showing her face today. The class went nice. She taught for an hour or so. I was at my Best too clearing all my doubts and the comfort level was achieved in only a few minutes. This was a first for me because normally I take some to adjust to something new. She, while leaving, told my Maa that I was a really good student when replying her about the First Impression she developed of me. It’s up to me now to hold on to that image. After she went I had some snacks. The thing is I stuff myself during Breakfast and Snacks leaving myself with nothing to eat during lunch and dinner and leaving Maa with a pale face. I switched on my PC to watch the new video that Green Day released just a few days prior. I love it and must have watched it 9-10 times already. I then completed a 6 page long leaving note which I hoped I would post here. But later on something inside me prevented me from doing so. So I came back to my TV and watched Bigg Boss. And then after the show got over, I started to feel bored again. Thought about reading a book for a second but ultimately decided against it. But at 10:30 I asked my Maa for the modem because I wanted to publish the Note I had written on my newly-installed MS Office. She forgot where she kept it but soon founded it after a struggle of 10 minutes. So here I was online again and the Gtalk is functioned in such a way that it also connects when the net is connected. I did not notice I was online at Gtalk until within a few seconds Iohannes messaged me stating where I was for the last three days. I decided to sign out immediately from there. I did too. So I opened Firefox and watched some great videos of ‘Death Cab for Cutie.’ Also listened to a great Manipuri Band at MySpace called A4APPLE. They are really talented musicians. But during all of this I wanted to open my Orkut A/C and look at the latest scraps. But I controlled my temptation with great pain.

I gave Maa the modem back at 12:30. I also ate my Dinner while watching the videos. Gossiped with my sister for half and hour and decided to go to hit the sack. I did that at 1:20 AM. Been lying down since then and I haven’t been able to go to sleep. Missed Muskan a lot today. Gunita must have put a new DP already. I hope Tanmay’s mother is better now. Really wanted to talk to Seepiya. Iohannes must be so bored without me. And Avinash too. His college begins from Mondy so he will be alright, I guess. Miss being Parul’s punching bag when she vents out all her frustration in front of me. Wanna see what latest note Mohit has written but I will not. Therefore, I have decided to write a day by day Blog of how I am doing without everybody and to see how long can I resist temptation. I will study tomorrow though. At least make a beginning. Hopefully that will occupy my mind a little. Sunday tomorrow and don’t wish to have fun. I have got Bio and Bengali tuition tomorrow. The time now is 3:12 AM and I should prolly take the profound shelter of a night nap.

With Love,

Well, 1983 is probably as far back as my musical memory goes and I’m looking forward to seeing what songs they pick for the series.

A lot of the soundtrack so far has been fairly mainstream or rock, and definitely guitar based, which I suppose is reflective of the nation’s tastes back then. As I was 7 in 1983, pop is what I remember most. There are some great soul tracks from that year but I don’t expect they’ll feature.

Still, having looked for tracks from 1983 in my iTunes, this is what I bet they can’t resist using and a few I wish they would use:

Bananarama – Robert De Niro’s waiting

Billy Joel – The longest time / An innocent man

Bobby Caldwell – Open your eyes

Culture Club – Church of the poison mind

Debarge – Stay with me

Elton John – I guess that’s why they call it the blues

Fiction Factory – Feels like heaven

A Flock of Seagulls – Wishing

Grandmaster Flash – The message

Gwen Guthrie – Padlock

Kurtis Blow – If i ruled the world

Level 42 – Sun goes down

Madonna – Lucky star

Mary Jane Girls – In my house

New Order – Blue Monday

Orange Juice – Rip it up

Pat Benatar – Love is a battlefield

Police – Every breath you take

Prince – When doves cry / 17 days / Purple rain

Slave – You meet my approval

System – You are in my system

Tears for Fears – Mad world

UB40 – If it happens again

Oh, school dances. TGOTS has already done a masterful job at capturing their oddities, at least in our neck of the woods, and I don’t have much intention of saying anything more. But occasionally a song will just shoot me back there — to the cringe-inducing awkwardness of stonewashed jeans and feathered bangs, the surge of energy when fast songs allowed a big group to dance together (um, “Red, Red Wine” being one of them, though in retrospect it’s not so fast), the whispered scandals about who was dancing with whom or even thinking of dancing with whom, the suddenly very important trips to the bathroom when a boy was about to ask you to slow dance — or when no boy was materializing and you couldn’t stand to hold up the wall much longer.

As for “Red, Red Wine,” I was sort of vaguely aware that the UB40 version was probably a cover, but it wasn’t until about five years ago that I learned — from my fella, source of much music wisdom — that the original was by Neil Diamond. Glorious, glorious day.

And speaking of red wine … it’s Friday at 5 p.m. I think I’ll go have some.

Everyone likes to predict the future and guessing the Big Day Out lineup in September 2009 for a January 2010 event seems to be the go, so I thought I’d let you all in on what I have ‘heard’.

Paul McCartney is apparently coming to our Aussie shores in the summer, so rumour has it he’ll be gracing the stages of BDO. Muse is a big contender after releasing their new album ‘The Resistance’. Depeche Mode are also heavily rumoured to be coming.

Someone mentioned Metallica and Radiohead (fingers crossed). Also got it from somewhere else that Eminem will headline??? I’ve heard Lily Allen, Mars Volta, Wolfmother, La Roux, Blur, Blink 182, AC/DC and Kasabian.

I’ve read Modest Mouse, Passion Pit, UB40, Jet, The Drones, Lisa Mitchell, Bluejuice, Karnivool and Philadelphia Grand Jury will also be here.

These bands have come from some of the best sources I can find, anyone heard anything different?

Folks, some of y’all have wondered how and why we choose videos for the Saturday Matinee Posts

Folks, some of y’all have wondered how and why we choose videos for the Saturday Matinee Posts. Actually no one axed us, but here’s how we do it anyway.

First, we find something odd, like this one. Then we apply advanced tublication, with links, to create a theme of sorts, and we run with it, like this:

Desert Bus Demo video. Woosk has a description of the game, and here’s a link to a related charitable fundraiser.

So now we’re lookin’ for bus in all the wrong places, and about all we find is The Who’s “Magic Bus,” one video of Roger Daltrey singing the annoying children’s song, and the Bus Boys, featured here about a year ago.

Instead of a bus song, let’s look for a sub song instead:

Here are the Subdudes. Gris gris gumbo yaya!

Now we’re sittin’ and scratchin’ and still lookin’ for another sub song. Everybody’s already seen Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues” video (including the Weird Al parody) and we find this:

Red Hot Chili Peppers, doing a Dylan/Punk/Funk mashup. Personally, I think it sucks, but it took cojones to do it, and that’s really what it’s all about.

But the theme/thread is not complete without a knot. At this point, we’re gonna take “sub” and drop one letter, leaving the letters U and B, and add the final score of a blowout soccer game. The knot becomes obvious:

UB40’s “Rat In The Kitchen” is a brit/reggae classic, and our post is complete.

But to be honest, sometimes we just throw up a bunch of last-minute unrelated videos and pretend that a lot of thought went into it, but you’ll never be able to tell the difference because we’re that good.

Even if you think the video posts are random, they aren’t. Around here there’s a reason for everything, even when there isn’t.

Have a great weekend. –Bunk

The Bosavi Giant Woolly Rat – it will pwn you… Rats. I hate the fucking things. You know

The Bosavi Giant Woolly Rat – it will pwn you…

Rats.

I hate the fucking things.

You know that red mist that can descend on you when you feel great wrath?

(KILL!

MUTILATE!

MURDER!

DESTROY!)

That’s what I get if I even think there’s a rat near me.

So far, this house has been virtually rat-free. We’ve had three of the bastards in about 25 years here.

The first one met its end via a sound twatting by a handy bit of gash timber when I found it in our basement.

Rat demise the second occurred when Mrs Shark chased it out of the garden and down the alley by the side of us. A well-aimed and frighteningly fatal kung-fu side kick delivered by Mrs Shark (she was taking kung-fu lessons at the time) sent the cunt to rodent heaven.

The third and final rat fatality here was accomplished with the help of one of the cats we had at the time. I was brought rushing to the garden by Mrs Shark calling out, ‘Owen’s cornered a big mouse!” I soon disabused her of that notion when I saw that the cat was in fact facing off against a rat. Mrs Shark and the cat flushed the motherfucker out of the shrubs in the border then I got a swift kick at it as it tried to climb the wall into next door’s garden. Once again, a kicking seemed to sort the situation out – I, too, had taken kung-fu lessons – and although I’m sure that it was never intended for this noble martial art to be used for pest control, it certainly came in handy for that task.

Which is all a preamble to this story in the news today.

A team of biologists and filmmakers from the BBC have found strange spiders, a rat the size of a cat and a frog with fangs co-habiting in a pristine giant volcano in the highlands of Papua New Guinea.

The animals were found in the ‘lost world” of the Mount Bosavi crater, an extinct volcano so remote and inaccessible that no humans live there. Instead, an amazing array of exotic fauna has thrived.

Among them is the Bosavi woolly rat, an over-sized – but vegetarian – rodent that measures almost 3 feet long and weighs in at 3.3lbs.

Fuck.

Me.

The BBC report on this discovery says that the creature

has no fear of humans

At nearly a meter long and the weight of a small dog, I’m not fucking surprised.

Not only is it a rat – it’s a cunting big one.

The team who discovered it call it the Bosavi Giant Woolly Rat.

Anyone with an iota of common sense would call it ‘Sir’…

Yes, nature is wonderful, but sometimes maybe it’s a bit too wonderful…

I’m just glad it’s on the other side of the world in Papua New Guinea.

If it sets foot in this house, it’s fucking dead meat.

If it doesn’t kick my ass first…

To conclude. a totally appropriate and excellent song for your delectation…

8. Black Rain Suite: Charlie Loses His Head *
9. Black Rain Suite: Sugai *
10. Black Rain Suite: Nick and Masa *
* Suite Composed By Hans Zimmer

Hans Zimmer
Livin’ On The Edge Of The Night The Way You Do The Things You Do
I’ll Be Holding On
