Adding the right repository sources in Ubuntu is essential for a more practical and fast management of your OS. In fact, using the correct sources list you can be sure that your system is always updated and safe. <a title="RepoGen Homepage" href="http://repogen.simplylinux.ch/">RepoGen</a> has been created for all these reasons. It also automatically compiles all the necessary GPG keys and you have just to add them (one by one) running the suggested command in the Terminal. We tested <a title="RepoGen Homepage" href="http://repogen.simplylinux.ch/">RepoGen</a> on two different PCs running both Ubuntu 8.04 &#38; Ubuntu 9.04 and were able to update our Software Sources in less of 15 minutes and without discovering a single problem. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p><strong>Update</strong>: it looks like I&#8217;m sucking in a lot of search engine traffic relating to Poulsbo / GMA500 on Linux &#8211; that was unintentional because there&#8217;s no information here. Please look at <a title=" Native Poulsbo (GMA 500) graphics driver for Fedora 10+ " href="http://www.happyassassin.net/2009/05/13/native-poulsbo-gma-500-graphics-driver-for-fedora-10/">Adam Williamson&#8217;s work on a native driver for Poulsbo</a> instead.</p>
<p><strong>Update 2</strong>: I came across <a title="mok0’s world - Ubuntu on the Dell Mini 10" href="http://mok0.wordpress.com/2009/05/25/ubuntu-on-the-dell-mini-10-2/">some Ubuntu-specific notes</a> which should be useful too.</p>
<p>&#8212;</p>
<p>I was a bit surprised by <a title="Ubuntu Now Available for Mini 10 Customers in the United States and Canada" href="http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/direct2dell/archive/2009/05/07/Ubuntu-Now-Available-for-Mini-10-Customers-in-the-United-States-and-Canada.aspx">Dell&#8217;s announcement</a> just now: it seems they&#8217;ve gone through some real efforts to make Ubuntu 8.04 look all 2009ish on their latest <a title="Dell fights back against Psion netBook trademark rampage" href="http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2009/02/dell-fights-back-against-psion-netbook-trademark-rampage.ars"><span style="text-decoration:line-through;">netbook</span></a> entry-level notebook. Let me try and be all 2009ish too, and include some of their <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">Flash-terrorism</span> YouTube footage:</p>

<p>Don&#8217;t worry,  I haven&#8217;t suddenly become a sucker for fancy &#8220;<a title="Wikipedia entry" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iconography">iconography</a>&#8221; (apparently that has a whole different meaning &#8220;in the office of the CTO&#8221; &#8211; don&#8217;t take this badly, Dell, I am a fan!), nor have I finally grown fond of NetworkManager, but seriously: WWAN support <em>is</em> pretty cool, and having it neatly integrated is even better.</p>
<p>Actually, I&#8217;m just really pleased to see what importance Dell seem to be assigning their Ubuntu programme these days. This little cheapling has Intel&#8217;s Poulsbo chipset (just like the Mini 12), which is great for power consumption, but apparently <a title="Intel GMA 500 (Poulsbo) graphics on Linux: a precise and comprehensive summary as to why you’re screwed" href="http://www.happyassassin.net/2009/01/30/intel-gma-500-poulsbo-graphics-on-linux-a-precise-and-comprehensive-summary-as-to-why-youre-screwed/">a real chore</a> when it comes to Linux support. As far as I&#8217;m aware, no other vendor is even trying to support it. In addition, also to keep the price low, there&#8217;s the ever troublesome Broadcom wifi chip, &#8220;official&#8221; Linux-support for which was <a title="unofficial account by an Ubuntu dev" href="http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5543025&#38;postcount=11">supposedly</a> also negotiated by Dell. I&#8217;m guessing there was no way they&#8217;d get all that working on 9.04, but to make up for that they backported the NM improvements and updated the &#8220;iconography&#8221; (sorry).</p>
<p>I&#8217;m just saying, that&#8217;s a lot of effort when you have a business partner called Microsoft that&#8217;s giving you Windows XP basically for free&#8230;</p>
<p>Ok, enough Ubuntu/Dell fanboyism for one day. Good night!</p>
<p>P.S.: Rik &#8211; if you happen to read this &#8211; I didn&#8217;t know they had a 6-cell battery coming (I told the guy to get a Samsung instead&#8230;)!</p>

I could get the right display (1280&#215;1024) with another monitor, but with my ViewSonic Optiquest Q71 it wouldn&#8217;t give me anything but 800&#215;600. I tried to force the resolution in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file but then the nifty GUI programs (System-&#62;Preferences-&#62;Screen Resolution) would just show empty and the best I would get (even trying to force it in the xorg.conf) was 1280&#215;800. So I hit up Google.</p>
<p>I finally stumbled on exactly what I needed:<br />

<p>I was able to set my monitor to be a 1280&#215;1024 capable monitor and it all works beautifully. </p>
<p>What gets me is why this nifty program isn&#8217;t in the menu. So I decided to add it (System-&#62;Preferences-&#62;Main Menu) and after looking around I found that it /is/ in the menu but that it is disabled under another section (Applications-&#62;Other-&#62;Screen and Graphics).</p>
<p>Huh.</p>

1.Instalando Java e Eclipse:<br />

<p>O Android SDK 1.0 precisa do Eclipse 3.3 ou 3.4.Infelizmente, estes pacotes não estão no repositório do Ubuntu 8.04 e será preciso instalar eles manualmente.</p>
<p>Acesse o site <a href="http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/">http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/</a> e faça o download da IDE desejável (no meu caso o <a href="http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/technology/epp/downloads/release/ganymede/SR1/eclipse-java-ganymede-SR1-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz">Eclipse IDE for Java Developers 64 bits</a>):</p>

<p>Dentro do diretório eclipse, há um executável “eclipse”, e este é o arquivo que vamos executar para startar o programa, mas para isso vamos criar um executável.</p>
<p>Em <strong>Applications</strong>, clique com o botão direito do mouse e selecione <strong>Edit Menus</strong>.<br />
Clique na pasta <strong>Programming</strong>, e depois em <strong>New Item</strong>.<br />
No nome da aplicação, digite <strong>Eclipse</strong>, e no <strong>Command</strong> o caminho completo do executável (no meu caso /home/rbernardes/eclipse/eclipse).<br />
Agora acessando a aba Applications/Programming haverá o atalho do Eclipse.<br />
Pronto! Instalado e rodando:</p>

Abra o terminal e descompacte o arquivo:<br />

<p>Em poucos passos, como instalar o vmware server no seu ubuntu desktop:</p>

<p>2.Depois de ler a licença, clique em “Yes” e faça o download do pacote .tar.gz (no momento deste artigo <a href="http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmserver/VMware-server-1.0.6-91891.tar.gz">http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmserver/VMware-server-1.0.6-91891.tar.gz</a></p>
<p>3.Você precisará também de um serial number, disponivel gratuitamente aqui<a href="http://register.vmware.com/content/registration.html">http://register.vmware.com/content/registration.html</a></p>
<p>4.Feito isso, vamos pôr a mão na massa, começando com alguns pacotes necessários:</p>
<blockquote><p>sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r` build-essential xinetd</p></blockquote>
<p>5.Acesse a pasta onde você salvou o arquivo do vmware e descompacte:</p>
<blockquote><p>cd /home/rafael/Desktop<br />
tar xvfz VMware-server-*.tar.gz<br />
cd vmware-server-distrib<br />
sudo ./vmware-install.pl</p></blockquote>
<p>6.Nessa etapa a instalação fará uma série de perguntas, onde a maioria das respostas serão respondidas com um simples “Enter”.Mas fique atento, caso deseje instalar o vmware em outro diretório.</p>
<p>7.Ao final da instalação será pedido o serial number, que você obtêm conforme o passo 3:</p>

<p>Type XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX or ‘Enter’ to cancel:</p></blockquote>
<p>8.Ao final da instalação execute</p>

<p>9.Quase pronto! Você encontra o atalho para o vmware server em <code>System Tools &#62; VMware Server Console</code>.<br />
Edite o atalho e na aba <code>Command</code> adicione na frente do executável <code>vmware</code> o comando <code>gksudo</code>.</p>
<p>Agora é só criar suas máquinas virtuais!<br />

<title><![CDATA[Google Earth - Error 29]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I&#8217;ve got a machine running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. Recently I decided to upgrade the little used Google Earth installation on that PC, due to its nagging about a newer version and the &#8220;wonderful&#8221; new features that were available. I went through the download and install procedure and then tried to start up my new installation.</p>
<p>The newly installed Google Earth failed to start. I figured that the upgrade had clobbered some files or that there was some version conflict. This thought was reinforced by the fact that I now had Google Earth in two different directories. So, I completely uninstalled and deleted both installations of Google Earth and then re-installed the new 5.0 beta version. Upon startup, I was met with this screen. It complained of an &#8220;Error: 29&#8243; and its inability to authenticate.</p>

<p>Search results for the error suggested communications problems related to firewalls and ISP issues. Having verified that I had no such firewall issues, I attributed the problem to a transient issue with Google or my ISP. But, days and weeks went by and the error persisted.</p>
<p>Then, one day, I actually needed Google Earth and when met with the error, I set to resolving the issue. All indications were that it was a communications error but, all the normal network testing showed that there were no communication problems with Google&#8217;s servers. Extensive searching then lead me to a note about a problem with Google Earth and the 64bit version of Ubuntu.</p>
<p>The issue was that Google Earth was a 32bit application running on a 64bit platform and it was unable to resolve the DNS names that it needed. There was a library missing on the Ubuntu system. Installing the lib32nss-mdns library resolved this Error: 29 problem. Here is the command to resolve it:</p>
<blockquote><pre>sudo atp-get install lib32nss-mdns</pre>
</blockquote>
<p>Now when I fire up Google Earth, I no longer get the Error: 29. Instead Google Earth starts up and I see the globe appear momentarily. Then it crashes and disappears from the screen. Nice. One problem traded for another. Running Google Earth from the command line, I see that there is another error right when it crashes.</p>

<p>This problem was a lot easier to track down. It seems that Google Earth ships with its own version of libcrypto.so.0.9.8 and that it isn&#8217;t appropriately linked for this version of Ubuntu. This may or may not have anything to do with 64bit, I couldn&#8217;t be bothered to figure it out. The fix is to simply delete or rename the Google Earth copy of libcrypto which then causes it to use the version that came with Ubuntu. Here&#8217;s the command:</p>
<blockquote><pre>sudo mv /opt/google-earth/libcrypto.so.0.9.8 /opt/google-earth/libcrypto.so.0.9.8.old</pre>
</blockquote>
<p>Magically, Google Earth works as it should. Almost. I still have the video issues that I&#8217;ve always had when using Google Earth on systems with Intel Q965 integrated graphics controllers. Choppy video and digital artifacts but, especially, pop-up screens such as the Tip Of The Day and Panoramio pictures appearing and then disappearing. You&#8217;d think that the video driver developers would have the drivers working by now since Intel has released the open source code quite some time ago. But, alas, this level of operation is still missing.</p>

<p>Räds icke. Allting ligger väldigt lättillgängligt, oftast bara en knapptryckning eller ett musklick från dig.</p>
<p>Vi börjar med de vanligaste programmen som en standardanvändare använder.</p>
<h2><strong>Pidgin &#8211; IM-klient</strong></h2>
<p>En alldeles utmärkt motsvarighet till Windows egna Windows Live Messenger som du säkert är van vid. Utseendet är något enklare och mindre grafiskt än WLM men jag tycker att det är lättare att få en överblick av den.<br />

<h2><strong>Firefox &#8211; Webbläsare</strong></h2>
<p>Du kanske har använt Firefox i Windows? Då är du van vid hur den fungerar. För dig som inte använt den någon gång behöver du inte vara orolig, den har ett simpelt utseende och fungerar mycket bättre än Internet Explorer. Den ligger under samma kategorier som Pidgin.<br />
<strong>Program -&#62; Internet -&#62; Webbläsaren Firefox</strong></p>
<h2><strong>Rhythmbox &#8211; Musikspelare</strong></h2>
<p>En helt okej musikspelare följer med som standard när du installerar Ubuntu. Utseendet är simpelt och nybörjarvänligt. Den ligger under<br />
<strong>Program -&#62; Ljud och video -&#62; Musikspelare Rhythmbox</strong></p>
<p>Alla dessa program kan du starta med en väldigt simpel knappkombination, <strong>Alt+F2</strong>.</p>
<p>Den har fått en motsvarighet i Windows som heter Launchy om minnet inte sviker mig.</p>

<p>Namnet på mediaservern är Mediatomb och finns i förråden.<br />
Öppna en terminal och skriv in följande:<br />
<code>sudo apt-get install mediatomb</code></p>
<p>Allt du behöver göra sen är att starta tjänsten och sen är du i full gång.<br />
Åter igen i en terminal skriver du följande:<br />
<code>sudo mediatomb</code></p>
<p>Gränssnittet är väldigt enkelt och man kan i princip inte misslyckas.<br />

<p>Du kan spara den i din hemmapp eller på skrivbordet. Jag rekommenderar att du sparar den i din hemmapp dvs. /home/dittnamn.</p>
<p>Nu får du installera lite beroenden för att kunna bygga källkoden. Öppna en terminal och skriv in följande</p>
<pre>sudo apt-get build-dep pidgin</pre>
<p>Nu har du allt du behöver. Packa nu upp den komprimerade filen där källkoden ligger.</p>
<pre>cd /home/dittnamn
tar xvf pidgin-2.5.4.tar.bz2
cd ~/pidgin-2.5.4.tar.bz2</pre>
<p>Nu är det dags att installera. Skriv in följande för att konfigurera, bygga och installera. En rad i taget.<br />
<strong>Edit: </strong>La till så att Pidgin installeras i /usr bland de andra programmen</p>
<pre>./configure -prefix=/usr --disable-nm
make
sudo make install</pre>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Först och främst, vi vet alla att XMMS är en &#8216;gammal&#8217; mediaspelare men den är inget mediabibliotek utan den spelar musik. Precis vad jag i alla fall är ute efter. Den är dessutom smidig.</p>
<p>Först måste vi hämta ett gäng paket för att du kunna kompilera XMMS.<br />
Öppna en terminal och skriv:</p>
<p><span style="font-size:85%;">sudo apt-get install autotools-dev  automake1.9 libtool gettext libasound2-dev libaudiofile-dev<br />
libgl1-mesa-dev libglib1.2-dev libgtk1.2-dev libesd0-dev libice-dev libmikmod2-dev libogg-dev<br />
libsm-dev libvorbis-dev libxxf86vm-dev libxml-dev libssl-dev build-essential make</span></p>
<p>libxml-dev är inte nödvändig, ibland klagar apt på den så den är lugn att ta bort ur installationen.</p>
<p>Skapa en ny mapp i din hemmapp (den är default när du startar en terminal), skriv sedan följande för att skapa en ny mapp där:</p>
<p><span style="font-size:85%;">mkdir ~/build</span></p>
<p>Gå sedan in i den nya mappen med följande:</p>
<p><span style="font-size:85%;">cd ~/build</span></p>
<p>Nu ska vi ladda ner XMMS-source&#8217;en från deras hemsida:</p>
<p><span style="font-size:85%;">wget http://xmms.org/files/1.2.x/xmms-1.2.11.tar.gz</span></p>
<p>Packa upp den med:</p>
<p><span style="font-size:85%;">tar xvf xmms-1.2.11.tar.gz</span></p>
<p>Gå in i den nya mappen:</p>
<p><span style="font-size:85%;">cd xmms-1.2.11/</span></p>
<p>Nu till själva kompileringen:</p>
<p><span style="font-size:85%;">./configure &#8211;prefix=/usr</span></p>
<p>Detta genererar nödvändiga filer och kollar ditt system</p>
<p>Själva kompileringen:</p>
<p><span style="font-size:85%;">sudo make</span></p>
<p>Till sist installationen:</p>
<p><span style="font-size:85%;">sudo make install</span></p>
<p>Grattis! Du har nu laddat ner source, kompilerat och installerat XMMS <img src="http://blog.talkactive.net/images/smileys/sm07.gif" alt="" /></p>
<p>Om du vill kan du nu ta bort mappen med source&#8217;en i.<br />
<span style="font-size:85%;">cd<br />
</span><span style="font-size:85%;">rm -rf ~/build</span></p>
<p>Så, nu är XMMS installerat och du kan starta det med <span style="font-weight:bold;">Alt+F2.</span></p>

I en terminal skriver du följande</p>

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)</code></dd>
</dl>
<p>Här gör vi en ny mapp, hämtar drivrutinen vi ska använda, packar upp den och hämtar ett par paket som<br />
är nödvändiga.</p>
<p>Nu installerar vi drivrutinen.</p>

sudo modprobe ath_pci</code></dd>
</dl>
<p>För att det nu ska funka måste vi lägga till en rad i /etc/modules och då gör vi följande.<br />

</dl>
<p>och lägger till</p>
<dl class="codebox">
<dd><code>ath_pci</code></dd>
</dl>
<p>Detta får modulen att laddas automatiskt vid uppstart.</p>
<p>Av någon anledning buggar detta sig efter varje kernel-update så du får göra följande efter varje kernel-update:<br />
I terminalen letar du dig fram till där du lagt madwifi-mappen(/home/dittnamn/source/madwifixxxx).<br />
Där skriver du följande rader</p>

Under tiden den laddas ner så ladda ner UNetbootin <a class="postlink" href="http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/">http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/</a></p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">Fixa en bootbar USB-sticka</span><br />
När ISO&#8217;n är färdighämtad sätter du in ditt USB-minne, startar UNetbootin och ordnar en bootbar USB-sticka.<br />
Gränssnittet är väldigt enkelt och det är i princip omöjligt att göra fel.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">Installation</span><br />
När den är färdig sätter du in din USB-sticka i din Acer och startar upp den.<br />
Tryck F12 för att komma till menyn där du kan välja att boota från USB.<br />
Gör det.</p>
<p>Sedan är det bara att installera Ubuntu som vanligt.<br />
&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<br />
Så, då var installationen färdig.<br />
Då är det dags för lite tweaking då allting tyvärr inte fungerar med detsamma.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">Trådlöst nätverk</span><br />
Det trådlösa funkar inte så det är det första vi får igång. Vi får snällt köra trådat i början så i med kabeln <img style="position:relative;top:0;left:0;" src="http://ubuntu-se.org/phpBB3/images/smilies/smiley.gif" alt=":)" /><br />
Nu tar vi upp terminalen och skriver in följande</p>

sudo apt-get upgrade</code></dd>
</dl>
<p>för att uppdatera oss och se till att vi har de senaste versionerna av paketen.</p>
<p>Då ska vi ta och fixa det trådlösa.<br />
Här ska vi göra ett val; Antingen väljer vi madwifi eller ndiswrapper. Jag valde madwifi och det funkar utmärkt så jag skriver guiden för det.</p>
<p>I en terminal skriver du följande</p>

<p>precis ovanför <span style="font-style:italic;">exit0</span>. Skriver du det nedanför kommer det inte att funka.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">Webcam</span><br />
För att testa så att din webcam funkar installerar vi luvcview.<br />
Åter igen i terminalen skriver vi</p>

<p>För att se så att din webcam hittas skriver vi.</p>
