<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Well, I&#8217;ve been a great fan of Mandriva till date and I will still be.<br />
After all, it was the first linux that caught my eye at first sight.<br />
But, down the line, there have been so many flavors of linux that have made an entry and only a few of them were actually stable and easy to use.</p>
<p>Ubuntu was certainly one of them. They way it entered the market was quite different. I was in my 3rd year of CS Engineering when I found it on the Internet first. I actually found that they were giving out a free CD and the best part was, the shipping was absolutely free. I was so amused by the kind of response it got over the years. I did my part by ordering a 250 CD pack and distributing it in my college to make it popular. It now clearly stands as the leader in home used Linux.</p>
<p>The thing that distinguishes it from other flavors, is the kind of support you find on the web. Also the number of applications you can find for it. It could be a complete replacement for a windows desktop.</p>
<p>Check out the Perfect Desktop article if you are planning to migrate from windows to linux : http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-ubuntu-studio-9.04 </p>

<description><![CDATA[As some of you may have guessed by some of my Tweets, I decided to give Ubuntu Linux a try (again). ]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>As some of you may have guessed by <a href="http://twitter.com/vincentthacker" target="_blank">some of my Tweets</a>, I decided to give Ubuntu Linux a try (<a href="http://pokeh.wordpress.com/2008/10/02/ubuntu/" target="_blank">again</a>). This time, instead of downloading the regular version of <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/" target="_blank">Ubuntu</a>, I decided to give a distribution called <a href="http://ubuntustudio.org/" target="_blank">Ubuntu Studio</a> a try. As of late I do <a href="http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=D7114F66F42076EE" target="_blank">a lot of video editing</a>, and I was interested to see what the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source_software" target="_blank">Open Source</a> world had to offer.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, every single time I decide to give Linux a try there&#8217;s always some kind of obstacle in the way. Specifically, this obstacle is Wireless Drivers, either the Drivers don&#8217;t work out-of-the-box and I have to spend the day Googling them, or the Drivers just plain and simply aren&#8217;t available.</p>
<p>This time the Drivers worked out of the box. The problem? They only supported WEP encryption. I use WPA encryption over my wireless network, so this renders the drivers more or less useless to me.</p>
<p>All the time I hear people praising Linux, and how it&#8217;s the best Operating System evar, but I just don&#8217;t see any evidence of that. I <em>want</em> to use Linux, but how am I supposed to when even the most simple tasks such as connecting to a wireless network results in a day-long struggle? I&#8217;m simply not willing to spend an entire day getting an Operating System to work.</p>
<p>Right now i&#8217;m a Windows user, and Windows does just about everything that I need it to. If people want me to switch to Linux distributions, then they&#8217;ve got a lot of work to do by the looks of things. Mainly, it needs to be a lot less painful to set everything up.</p>

<p><span style="color:#000000;"><a href="http://www.pcplus.co.uk/node/3091/">Build A Real Time Audio Studio</a></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#000000;"><a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/08/04/linux-music-workflow-switching-from-mac-os-x-to-ubuntu-with-kim-cascone/">Linux Music Workflow: Switching from Mac OS X to Ubuntu with Kim Cascone</a></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#000000;"><a href="http://tuxradar.com/content/how-set-your-own-linux-media-server">How to set up your own Linux media server</a></span></p>

<p>Equipo: Ordenador ASUS eeepc 1000h</p>
<p>Voy paso a paso.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I recently came across the OS Ubuntu Studio.  Bascially it is Ubuntu desgined for people that do graphic, video, sound editing.  The creative side of computers.</p>
<p><a href="http://ubuntustudio.org/" target="_blank">http://ubuntustudio.org/</a></p>
<p>Personally I tend to get the weird issues when installing software and operating systems, so the install cd did not work for me.  I spent a couple of days browsing the internet I found out how to install it into my current install of Jaunty.</p>
<p>1.  Open the terminal.  Applications &#62; Accessories &#62; Terminal.</p>
<p>2.  Type in the following:</p>
<p>sudo aptitude update &#38;&#38; sudo aptitude install ubuntustudio-desktop ubuntustudio-audio ubuntustudio-audio-plugins ubuntustudio-graphics ubuntustudio-video linux-rt</p>
<p>3.  Enter your password.</p>
<p>4.  Wait for it to finish downloading and installing.  This can take anywhere from one to six hours.  It depends on your internet connection.</p>
<p>5.  When it is downloaded and installed, you will be prompted to restart.  Restart the computer.</p>
<p>Ubuntu Studio is now installed on your current copy of Ubuntu Jaunty.</p>

Mudah- mudahan berhasil menginstall.</p>

<description><![CDATA[I&#8217;ve always been a big fan of Linux. Well, most people know it as JUST LINUX. Most people even]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I&#8217;ve always been a big fan of Linux. Well, most people know it as JUST LINUX. Most people even think about white text on black background displays w0henever they hear the word linux. Truth is linux has come a long way, and it&#8217;s almost ready to compete (if not already competing) in the big operating system wars now-a-days. And it&#8217;s not JUST LINUX, there are actually DISTROS. DISTRO as in short for distribution. Meaning, there are several linuxes out there. Each one having distinctions in terms of performance, features and compatibilities. Linux regardless of the distro is great (I know that a lot of other linux fans out there think that &#8220;great&#8221; would be an understatement), but my personal favorite would be Ubuntu. </p>
<p>I&#8217;ve tried several distros of linux, fedora, mandrake and debian but in my opinion, the distro that is nearest to becoming the linux distro for home use would be Ubuntu (though I know a lot of home users may already be using it today). Very easy to install, in some systems, Ubuntu may already work out of the box (without the need to install drivers), excellent package manager (the one that handles installations of programs), clean and stable, fast (like any other linux distro), very easy to update, very flexible (tweaking for advanced users is quick and easy). </p>
<p>I recently discovered this variant of Ubuntu called Ubuntu Studio. If you&#8217;re a linux enthusiast at the same time a graphics artist, this is definitely a must-try software. Best of all, it&#8217;s free!!! What makes it different from the other Ubuntu variants is that, this one is supposedly streamlined for multimedia creation. Audio, video and graphics. Open-source software for multimedia creation comes bundled with this package. Again, it&#8217;s all free. </p>
<div id="attachment_49" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><a href="http://ubuntustudio.org/"><img src="http://draftbeer80.wordpress.com/files/2009/06/website.jpg?w=300" alt="Ubuntu Studio Website" title="Click to go to Ubuntu Studio Website" width="300" height="203" class="size-medium wp-image-49" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Ubuntu Studio Website</p></div>
<p>For graphic design and 3d modeling, Ubuntu studio comes with GIMP (photoshop counterpart for linux), Inkscape and Blender (3d modeling software like maya or 3dsmax). The OS also comes with several plugins and wacom-tools. For audio, it comes with Ardour 2, a multitrack recorder/editor. And for Video it comes with PiTivi, Kino, Cinepaint. </p>
<div id="attachment_51" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><a href="http://www.winehq.org/"><img src="http://draftbeer80.wordpress.com/files/2009/06/wine.jpg?w=300" alt="WineHQ" title="Click to go to the Wine website..." width="300" height="254" class="size-medium wp-image-51" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">WineHQ</p></div>
<p>Now I know most of us may have not heard about these software. I have not used all of them yet though. But I&#8217;ve experienced working with GIMP and Blender. And these two software have a lot of potential. It is feature rich for a free software!</p>
<p>Most of you who are not well versed with operating systems may be asking, will my software (windows) run under Ubuntu? The answer is both YES and NO. There are several software out there like Maya that have versions that run under linux, so that would be a YES. Now would the windows version of Maya run under linux? Probably it won&#8217;t. But there is this software called WINE, it works like an emulator but it&#8217;s not. I supposedly enables windows software (.exes) to run under linux. Unlike an emulator, it won&#8217;t slow down your apps (theoritically) since what it really does is that it acts as sort of a bridge from windows to linux. Whenever the windows software looks for a particular function that supposedly only windows could provide, WINE redirects that call over to the equivalent function within linux. This technology have been around for quite a while now and more and more software are being supported.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve tried installing Photoshop CS within ubuntu using WINE and I was able to run it seamlessly. I tried installing microsoft word and other non-multimedia related software as well and that too ran seamlessly. Tried running games like Warcraft 3 and Neverwinter nights, and runs perfectly as well! </p>
<p>Well I know that us artists are rarely concerned about the hocus pocus running at the background (in our computer). We are mostly concerned about (besides features) ease of use, stability and speed. We want our tools and software to NEVER crash and NEVER cause delays. That&#8217;s something that Ubuntu could offer, stability, speed and ease of use. With the surfacing of Ubuntu Studio, Linux opens its doors to artists like you and me. With the emergence of the WINE technology, it also starts to open new possibilities.</p>

<description><![CDATA[Well, it&#8217;s been a little while since I last wrote and I have played a bit with the Netbook. I ]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Well, it&#8217;s been a little while since I last wrote and I have played a bit with the Netbook. I also have an interest in Music, that is to say I play the guitar (badly) but I do have three guitars one traditional Spanish guitar made by BM in Seville (£15) at a boot fair a number of years back, a steel strung dreadnought style electric accoustic with a cutaway made by Fender and a Fender Squeir Stratocaster electric guitar. As a friend (Who really can play) once said &#8220;thats two more than most people&#8221;, Hmm, not quite sure what he meant by that after all. Anyway the point is that I thought that it would be good to see if my netbook would be up to becoming a recording studio, you never know I might become an overnight success as a recording star; or not.</p>
<p>If you recall from my first post, I loaded a copy of Ubuntu (Jaunty Jackalope) onto the netbook and it has been performing very well for all the usual functions like web browsing Email etc. Now Ubuntu do an interesting version of the operating system called Ubuntu Studio, which ostensibly comes complete with a number of applications related to media production like a multitrack recording app, and drum machines, Midi instruments and a server called Jack that apparently works with lots of other applications to make a comprehensive music recording studio, sounds good don&#8217;t it. It also has applications for Video but I confess I have not tried these.</p>
<p>If you go into the Synaptic Package manager in Administration you can find what appears to be a package called Ubuntu Studio available for download from the Ubuntu repositories. Do install it but don&#8217;t expect it to provide all of the applications that you might need, it won&#8217;t, but the new look that the eye candy it provides makes your desktop impressive. A visit to the appropriate Ubuntu site will list the applications that you might need and most of these are available through the Synaptic Package manager. But working out which application does what might be a little confusing at first. &#8220;Jack&#8221; for instance is a server which effectively takes control of your sound card and allows you to run a number of applications simultaneously and gives them all access to the sound card, they must of course be able to work with &#8220;Jack&#8221;. so it is possible to run say a drum machine (Hydrogen)  and a multi track recording application (Ardour) with perhaps a midi instrument or two.</p>
<p>If you are going to have a go with Ubuntu Studio I would strongly advise downloading the complete ISO from the Ubuntu Studio site which will install just about everything you need as a fresh operating system on a dedicated machine, not that it requires anything very fast, but for instance, I discovered that the SSD (Solid State Disk) in my netbook could not keep up with Ardour and tripped out about three quarters of the way through my first recording. SSDs are notoriously slow when writing data  (compared with conventional Hard Drives). I would also advise the use of   &#8220;Patchage&#8221; which is an application that shows in diagramatic form all of the connections to and from the Jack server and allows editing of these connections with simple point and click movements on the diagram itself. Patchage is much easier to understand than the patchbay in the Jack audio connection Kit. If you want to get Ubuntu Studio up and Running you will have a steep learning curve to follow and a number of sites are listed to help you do it.</p>
<p>Even simpler tasks can at first seem needlessly hard in Linux. I decided that it might be a good idea to be able to download some videos from YouTube and rip the Mp3 from them so that I could learn the tunes, (  it helps if I know the tune when I try to play it on the guitar ) seems simple enough, hmm. Well I searched first for an application that would do the job and found &#8220;Utube Ripper&#8221; downloaded and installed  it, and bingo it downloads the FLV video files from YouTube perfectly. I could have stopped there, but I wanted to extract the Mp3 from the video file and keep that in a much smaller space on my SSD.  I tried the Convert FLV option, and it simply didn&#8217;t work. To cut a very long story short I discovered that many people have had this problem because Utube Ripper and other applications and plugins for the Firefox  Browser  like &#8220;Download helper&#8221; which nominally do the same thing are built using a package called &#8220;ffmpeg&#8221; which carries out the encoding and decoding process. Now ffmpeg is a very fine package but what you won&#8217;t find out until you try is that the application that is distributed by Ubuntu does not contain the required Mp3 functions there are very good reasons for this. Basically Ubuntu will not distribute anything that is not &#8220;Free&#8221;  and the required mp3 function is classified as &#8220;Non-Free&#8221; again if you want to understand the difference follow the appropriate link. If  &#8220;ffmpeg &#8221; as distributed from the Ubuntu repository does not work, what must I do? Many searches on the net suggested that I needed to compile my own (deb file) version of  ffmpeg, and by collecting all the neccessary source files from here and there and typing a very complicated succession of commands in the terminal application I would acheive the desired result.  To a seasoned linux user this is probably bread and butter but to a new (yet to be convinced) ex-windows user this is an anathema. Fortunately I finally stumbled upon a geek with the ability to talk to those of us lesser geeks who are struggling to understand this world of linux he calls himself the FakeOutDoorsMan and the text can be found at   http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1117283.html (it is in the links list) . I read it and discovered that, because I have installed the Jaunty Jackalope distribution of  Ubuntu a couple of command lines in the Terminal programme would add the required elements to my installation and ffmpeg would do just what I wanted; I did it, and yes you guessed it, it worked. I can now download and rip mp3s from YouTube videos. Of  course you wouldn&#8217;t want to do this with anything that might be construed as illegal but there are many non commercial videos on YouTube just waiting for you to download.</p>
