He could very well be Man of the Decade. Since taking office in 2000, Union City Mayor Brian P. Stac

He could very well be Man of the Decade. Since taking office in 2000, Union City Mayor Brian P. Stack hasn’t had a regular 9-hour day. He works up to 14 to 16 hours a day, and has been workaholicking himself in community service and politics for 30 years. During the last 10 years he has been mayor of Union City, Stack has dramatically improved the quality of life of the residents, and effectively rose from what his enemies used to pejoratively call “a neighborhood sergeant” to the rising star in New Jersey politics. (The guy who called him “neighborhood sergeant” in a local pamphlet in 1998 served time in prison for corruption, later coming back to Stack begging for him to place an ad in his pamphlet).

Brian has served as a UC Commissioner, Hudson County Freeholder, NJ State Assemblyman, Mayor of Union City and NJ State Senator. He has performed admirably in each elected position and he carries an impressive following that manifests itself in the amount of votes he gets in every election.

Last year he brought millions to Union City, and unlike past administrations and the town next door- you know the one that is going through a recall, What’s his name?- Union City residents can actually see the money in the multiple improvements Stack has made in the city: A high-tech, brand new high school which houses up to 2,600 young people receiving the best quality education ever offered in Union City. A brand new recreation park, Firefighter’s Memorial Park, with an olympic-sized swimming pool, a huge recreational pool, and water parks for kids, all facing the skyline of New York City. The park has a special meaning. In September 11, 2001, hundreds of Union City residents gathered on the site to watch the events of the day. One day later, they lightened candles and prayed for the victims, many of them firefighters.

Most of Union City’s streets are newly paved, most of the city’s parks have been renovated with water fountains and sports facilities like the one on 39th Street especially for skate boarding. The Union City Police Department, as well as the Department of Public Works, are working in an unprecedently efficient manner in the history of the city.

Before Stack, the city was under the grip of a corrupted political machine. At one point even two Civil War cannons disappeared from a park and appeared near the home of a former commissioner. The streets were dirty. Politicians were indicted and convicted. All public positions, including teachers, had to be won in exchange for “political favors”. And improvements were never seen, except for the contributions that the Cuban community brought with local business in the 70s and 80s. The city had two Cuban mayors who are remebered for raising taxes 33 and 34%, respectively. Political power fell in the hands of Mayor Bruce Walter, a founding member of the Alliance Political Machine. In 1997, it was Brian Stack who took it upon himself to dismantle the corruption and it wasn’t until 2000 that he started to make positive changes. Still the web of networking in terms of nepotism, discrimination, and ambition for power has to suffer significant changes in order for the city to run according with the times. Brian Stack has done a lot in 10 years. He will do much more, city- and county-wise, in the next ten. He is on the right track.

This year, Stack also organized dozens of art festivals, making music, poetry, and art accessible to all residents. In the music and arts field Stack has been assisted by no other than the Musical Commissioner: Lucio Fernandez. Every week Stack manages to legislate in Trenton and come back to Union City. On Thanksgiving, he broke his own record, giving away 16,000 turkeys to his constituentcy. On Christmas, he managed to give thousands of toys to the needy.

In 2009, he still answered all his phone calls. His motto “Call me anytime, not only election time” is as real as the progress Union City has achieved under Stack’s leadership. For more than 12 years, at least in my personal experience, Stack answers all his telephone calls. How he does it? Simple. He works more and with a bigger passion to serve than any other politician.

Stack has always maintained his independence from the HCDO. This year was no exception. While New Jersey’s Mayor maintained his loyalty to the Democratic party, finally supporting former governor Jon Corzine, he invited then gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie to the National Night Out Against Crime in Union City. That night Stack proved that he was an independent Democrat, and that he was willing to take the criticism from Corzine’s zealots to show that he wasn’t a machine politics puppet, but a real leader.

Like other outstanding leaders, Stack has his enemies, to whom he administers a genereous beating in every election, or the police catches handing out illegal flyers in the street at night and arrests them. Throughout the years, Brian has been able to keep the loyalty of his friends. If you work hard with him, he’ll never forget it. If he tells you “You have a friend for life,” he means it. I know. Stack is a true friend who rarely talks about personal matters, or, rather, all he talks about is personal, because that’s politics for him. That will not prevent him from being a great human being and when he shows his considerable human side he’ll let you know the same way he’ll let you know what he thinks in politics.

This past year was a rewarding one for Brian. I am sure the highlight was the inauguration of the new Union City High School. “It was a dream of a lifetime,” he said at the ceremonies. Yet to him, this dream is beyond politics. It’s about people, and people is what he really cares about.

In 2010, he will face re-election as Union City Mayor, where we call him New Jersey’s Mayor. In both his mayoral and senatorial election Stack might face a rival but he’s not alone. With him, working in his campaign, he’ll have hundreds of willing volunteer that can attest for his commitment and love for the people he serves.

Congrats Brian! God be with you!

¡Dios Contigo!

A few days ago, I read a letter from a Venezuelan father thanking Fidel Castro because his daughter had graduated as an M.D. in Cuba. It has been the policy of the Cuban regime to bring students from all Latin America to study in Cuba while Cuban citizens suffer all kinds of hardships, not excluding lacking the most basic things, like toilet paper, or any paper for that matter. I grew up under a system where a pen was a commodity, a notebook or a pencil sharpener luxuries. We all experienced the ration card. It allowed ridiculous rations of coffee, salt, sugar, and so on. The system has deteriorated to the point where more than two million Cubans have escaped, many of them risking- and losing- their lives in the Florida Straight or the Gulf of Mexico. Yet the propaganda machine lives on, feeding on the poor and ignorant of this world. Cubans were recently asked by dictator Raul Castro to “tighten their belts”: that means more misery, more humiliation and violation of the most elementary human rights. In today’s Cubanet, the following article narrates the poor condition of medicine in Cuba. The Marxist Paradise where Europeans go by the millions to take advantage of the cheapest prostitutes on earth. These tourists turn a blind eye to the suffering of most Cubans to feed their sexual hunger and depravity. While some pay to go, Cubans die to leave the Island-prison where all forms of freedom are suppressed. Homosexuals have been placed in concentration camps (UMAP), dissidents are persecuted and beaten, tortured and murdered in Castro’s jails. A general and very real paranoia has taken over the land where any expression of dissent is expressed with hands signs. All this while foreigners study in luxury at the expense of the Cuban citizen. As well as a medical career, these young men and women from Latin America and Africa get a brainwash, thanks to the formidable propaganda machine the Communists have become masters in manipulating. Just look at the picture below and see what a hospital in Cuba looks like- a hospital for Cuban citizens, that is. One day, just like it happened with The Iron Curtain, the Cuban dictatorship will crumble and the truth will explode in the face of those who have supported this regime of terror.

Ms. Martel eloquently spoke to EHS students about campus life at Harvard University, where she studies Government in a Pre-Law Program. At 20 she’ll earn her degree next year. Martel offered valuable information and encouragement to ROTC cadets who engaged her in a lively Q & A session after the 35 minute presentation. Frances Martel has been a featured columnist and since last year publisher of the Harvard Independent, a featured writer for Ringtalk.com since the age of seventeen, President of Carrier House at Harvard, correspondent for The Harvard Times, and the first Latin-American woman to run for the Harvard University UC presidency.
One more year Cubans in Hudson County celebrate their heritage in the Desfile Cubano de New Jersey. It’s a celebration of our contribution to this country as well as a business opportunity for the organizers, who are also fervent patriots. Most Hudson County politicians are ready and willing to show their faces at the parade. Very few, like Union City Mayor Brian P. Stack is always there for the Cuban community in all events. Others show their faces in election time. Others having been in the White House for eight years have never cared to show up, not for the Cuba parade nor for any other parade. It is a festive time for the populace, always ready to welcome the festivities. It must be a new experience for the recent arrivals from Cuba, who have probably never seen a parade like this, where you can express yourself freely, or even in the middle of West New York, speak about the Liberation of West New York. Other politicians are Cuban Americans who condemned the parade last year, prohibited it to pass by its town, and today had the cara de palo (face of stick) to walk through the streets, almost against their will, certainly against their questionable patriotic convictions.
CUBAN PRIDE: The Old Cuba and The New Cuba: United under the Nation that sheltered its sons and daughters from tyranny, both united in The New Jersey Cuban Day Parade.

Since early this morning the famous Bergenline Avenue at the intersection of 45 Street: the heart of the Cuban Community in Union City, had a large crowd of Cubans and Latin Americans walking, shopping in the Avenue and waiting for the parade that was, by word of mouth, rumored to start at 5:00 PM (after being rumored to start at 4:00, then at 3:00, then at 2:00…). Some Cubans have brought beach chairs and conduct lively debates on the sidewalk. There’s a visible UC Police presence everywhere. There are groups of young people from Latin America and Cuba in colorful motorcycles parked along the Avenue. There is an old man with a Guayabera proudly smiles and looks at a young beautiful Cuban girl who passes by. Dominos in different colors are displayed at the now legendary El Waterloo store on the corner of 45 and Bergenline. By five o’clock the Cubans are out: there are thousands of them in the streets from West New York to Union City. They are the young rapper-looking kids, the trajeado family man or gavilán and the always beautiful and unique Cuban women, from all ages, waving Cuban flags, they have come this afternoon to reclaim the Avenue they rebuilt in the 70’s with their sweet and proud looks, with the hard work of their people.

There are many nationalities showing their pride in their colors. There are hundreds of dominicanos, boricuas, peruanos, and of every country in Latin America. I feel a strong sense of pride watching my compatriots in the streets and so many people supporting us. It’s Cuban pride day.

Brian Stack passes by, the crowd cheers, ¡Viva Brian! It’s 6:30 in the afternoon on June 1st. 2008.

It’s 6:55 PM and the crowds have grown larger. It’s clear that this is one of most successful parades ever. La Flaca from El Gordo y La Flaca pass by. You can’t even walk on Bergenline Avenue, that’s how crowded it is. There must be thousands in the streets. The people have answered to the Cuban Community, which has been generous to all Latin Americans in this area.

The parade marches on at this time. We are reporting live from Bergenline Avenue, Union City.

Our site will share with our readers exclusive images from today’s parade, Sunday, June 2 2008.
These ladies represent the best of our community; their success makes all freedom-loving Cubans proud. They are a true testament to their parents’ legacy of hard work, values and commitment.

You’ll always have my support! The day Cuba is finally free from the Castros’ Communist dictatorship we’ll have a huge party in this city where you give and gave so much. You are grateful because this country opened its doors. This great country is grateful for your contributions, for your love for freedom, for the values and the effort you have brought in your restless love for freedom,” said Brian P. Stack to more than a thousand Cubans who stood up to applaud Union City’s own favorite son, who is always there for the Cuban community, and has been there since he started his public life at age 15. Brian worked tirelessly for the Cuban community before, during and after the Mariel boat lift. He has never let us down.

A edificar no sólo casas, sino familias.

Two lieutenants were promoted to the rank of captain, four sergeants to lieutenant, and three detectives and two patrolmen to sergeant at a ceremony at Jose Marti Middle School last Friday.

The lieutenants promoted to captain are Peter Cipoletta and Emilio Gonzalez. The sergeants promoted to lieutenant are: James D’Andrea, Brian Wolpert, Gregory Katseyeanis and Nichelle Luster. The officers promoted to sergeant are Omar Hernandez, Anthony Facchini, Raymond Vasquez, Sergio DeRojas and Walter Laurencio.

Union City recently passed an ordinance adding at least two captains to its table of organization, which was approved by the state Department of Community Affairs, officials said.

In “consideration of our taxpayers,” Union City Police Chief Charles Everett said the Police Benevolent Association Local 8 and the promoted officers have agreed to forego a pay hike until July 1, 2009.

“Up until the day when these promotions were made, the Union City Police Department was operating with a historically low number of supervisors,” Everett said in an e-mailed response to questions about the promotions. “These promotions restore the supervisory ranks to a low, but acceptable level.”

Smear effort by her lawyer

Friday, April 11, 2008
The Jersey Journal

I am writing to respond to a story that appeared in the April 1 edition of The Jersey Journal, regarding the contribution of funds to my campaign from Ms. Luisa Medrano. While justice is the desired outcome of any trial, on rare occasion the dynamics related to the judicial process are politically motivated. The referenced news story conveys such an instance.

Clearly, my campaign would never knowingly accept contributions from a business that was either tainted or under investigation for impropriety, as such action would not be in accordance with the ideals of my campaign.

What has yet to be mentioned is that the City of Union City closed Ms. Medrano’s establishment on two occasions, indicating that no preferential treatment was offered. In addition, when it was discovered that there was a problem with Ms. Medrano’s bar, the campaign donations that were obtained from her business were donated to a local shelter.

Furthermore, I am disappointed in legal counsel’s decision to invoke my name. It is evident that there was no basis for that particular line of questioning, other than to attempt to smear my character. I believe that such deviating questions can only result in the promulgation of politically motivated misinformation. Subsequently, it is important to note that said attorney had been removed as a lawyer for the Union City Board of Education and may carry a grudge.

Moreover, I continue to make every attempt to ensure that local laws are enforced. No administration in recent memory has been more diligently involved in public safety than this one. In an effort to enhance the safety of our city, we have permanently closed over a dozen liquor establishments, and changed the closing time for liquor establishments from 3 a.m. to 2 a.m. The cleanup of these establishments and our ongoing commitment to public safety helps to improve the quality of life for every resident within our community. I am confident in asserting that the issue of public safety is, and has always been, far more critical to my administration than any campaign contribution.

The Thread Building: One bedroom condos $400,000. Two Bedrooms $700,000. Welcome to a New York lifestyle: Union City.

Properties in Union City have risen in value significantly during the past few years. The proximity to New York City is the main factor behind the high property value in this city of 1.27 square miles with the highest population per square foot in the United States, 75,000. The last five years have seen a healthy development of luxury condominiums, two- and three-family house renovations and high volume of movement in real estate sales. At this time, with the country at the doors of a recession, the real estate market has slowed down. Nevertheless property minutes from New York City only rises in value. Hoboken is saturated, with a one-bedroom apartment renting up to $1,800 to $2,000 a month. In Union City we have seen an expected rise in rents with a one bedroom apartment near the 47th Street light rail going for $1,300 to $1,400 a month. Needless to say, very few rents include utilities. And the ones that do are located in older properties with D locations.

The Hoboken concept, developed a few years ago with total success in Frank Sinatra’s birthplace, is moving to Union City. And it’s beginning to show in tall buildings like the new Thread Building, with a great location in the small city with giant possibilities. On March 9, 2008, The New York Times published “Hoboken Comes to Union City.” Read this interesting article that explains how the Hoboken phenomenon is coming to Union City, a city revitalized by Cuban immigrants in the late 60’s and especially in the 70’s. The Thread Building offers super luxury condominiums that will only rise in value in a very short time. Thanks to its location and the efforts of Union City Mayor Brian Stack, this unique city across the Hudson has become not only a great place to live and shop but a real investment.

Hi, I’m John Corzine and I love ya!

Remember all te campaign promises I made? That I had a plan to balance the budget, that I would do this and that…well I was just kidding! Yeah, just like you heard cause I’m a funny kinda’ fella. The real reason I am writing to you is that now I AM NOT KIDDING. I really have a plan to balance New Jersey’s Budget. This tax and spend republicans have destroyed the budget, and then that gay fella, you know. The I came in and now what do you know? I HAVE TO RAISE YOUR TAXES. I will raise your taxes until you cry MOMMAA! And the some…you see in order to give the super rich another break YOU the working class are going to have to pay for all the welfare cases that arrive avery day in New Jersey, plus any other program that I can come up with to maintain our political machines. This time I am also writing to you to ask for your vote for Hillary. You see, Senator Menendez and I have a big chunk stake on this: menendez was promised a Huge Job with her administration and I was given free way to raise your taxes till you bleed. Hillary is the clear best qualified candidate for president. She holds all the New Jersey politician’s attributes, including the ability to come up with the “absentee ballot bunny” under the hat.

Thanks for taking the time to read this message. Next time you hear from me is when you go to a Turnpike Toll and two of my workers milk you out of a couple of bucks more for using my highway. Love ya!
