I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that for the first time in many years I wasn’t going to make it to either of the big gaming conventions in my neck of the woods.  For a long time Origins down in Columbus felt like my “home turf”, only a couple hours away, it could be done as a day trip, though we usually made a weekend of it.  Likewise of late with GenCon, Indy is only about a three hour drive as well, and though we’ve also done it as a day trip, it’s much nicer to spend the weekend.  But time and schedules didn’t seem to lend themselves well to attending either this year.

As these things sometimes do though, the clouds parted so to speak this week, and we were able to make a nice plan for an overnight stay in the Indy area to both catch a full day at GenCon and attend a concert my wife REALLY wants to see at the State Fair.  (Keith Urban, for those that care.)

I’m excited to get that general GenCon buzz again this year.  I plan on taking a lot of pictures for the benefit of those of you that drop by here from time to time.  I really look forward to getting my hands on some Arcane Legions, just to see how it lives up to the hype.  I want to try my hand at the new Marvel card game from UDE.  I want to get any sort of scoop I can on the HeroClix/WizKids/NECA news.  And of course I expect to pick up a lot of Magic singles to round out some decks I’ve been working on.

But mostly I look forward to seeing all of my hobby gaming friends that I only usually have the chance to catch up with once a year.  If you will be attending on Saturday as well, drop me a comment here and please say hi if you see me in the crowd.

UDE received a lot of attention from HeroClix fans when they announced they had a new license to make collectible minis games featuring the Marvel characters.  What didn’t get a lot of attention at first was that they had also renewed their license for making collectible card games for Marvel as well.

With the venerable VS. system seemingly having run it’s course, UDE is set to re-enter the fray with a new Marvel game called Marvel Superstars TCG.  And apparently this is going to happen pretty fast, as according to GenCon press materials, this game will be ready to be played as a free demo in just a few weeks…

This is, hands down, the best item in the game for a PvP’er. Will it increase your stats? Give you a special ability? Let you escape from a clinch situation with your life? Will it make you better at PvP?

Ha! It doesn’t do any of those things but it is still the best item. There is simply nothing more satisfying than planting a big THUMBS-DOWN flag in the corpse of your fallen enemies. You’ll love it, your teammates will be jealous, and the opposition will gnash their teeth in anger. In fact, I’ve had more than a few people make level 1 alts on Bronzebeard just to yell at me for flagging their corpses a time or two. Perfect! If the horde are mad, I’m doing my job well!

One of my favorite in-game items is the EPIC Hippogryph Hatchling pet from the Upper Deck Entertainment World of Warcraft trading card game. This little blue flying companion was a rare card from October of 2006, that has become very hard to find and rather expensive to boot. Mine was a gift, but you might have to cough up serious cash if you want to get one too.

El logo es obra del ingeniero artístico y también amigo Juanjo Escudero, jurista en proyecto. Esta nueva imagen refleja a la perfección tres de las cualidades de la organización.

La primera de ellas es el pluralismo, pues en Unión de Estudiantes de Asturias caben muchas formas de pensar y opinar. La única convergencia que se exige es la defensa de los derechos e intereses del alumnado. La segunda, unidad de acción: todos y cada uno de nosotros formamos parte de un engranaje preciso. El que todos rememos en la misma dirección es lo que nos da fuerza a la hora de hacer oír nuestras reivindicaciones. La última es el dinamismo. La capacidad de absorber los cambios que en la sociedad, las instituciones académicas y la comunidad estudiantil se suceden. Si no fuera así, seríamos un movimiento anacrónico incapaz y con nula representatividad, como el Sindicato de Estudiantes.

Son esos tres valores los que han hecho de Unión de Estudiantes de Asturias el movimiento estudiantil de referencia en la comunidad autónioma. Dentro de la Universidad de Oviedo, militan en nuestras filas el Presidente y el Secretario del Consejo de Estudiantes, miembros de la Comisión de Gobierno, numerosos representantes del Claustro y otros tantos miembros de las muchas Juntas de Escuela y Facultad. Además, estamos formalmente constituidos en Avilés, donde formamos parte del Consejo Escolar Municipal, y vamos en camino de estarlo en Gijón y Oviedo. A esta importante representatividad institucional ha de sumársele la representatividad real, la de los cientos de asociados que formamos parte de un proyecto que, desde sus albores, ha sido ilusionante.

Hoy tocó, con Unión de Estudiantes de Asturias, impartir la primera de las charlas sobre el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior que el movimiento estudiantil realiza en los centros de enseñanza no universitarios de la región. Fue en el IES Universidad Laboral de Gijón. El coloquio, del que yo era uno de sus ponentes, se desarrolló con la animada participación de veintidós jóvenes estudiantes. Jóvenes, por cierto, que pese a haber terminado las clases de segundo de bachillerato ayer mismo, se dieron cita en el centro para asistir expresamente al acto. La verdad es que la principal sensación que me llevé de éste es la enorme carencia de información que se tiene de un cambio que ya ha llegado.

La charla estuvo fuera de cualquier posicionamiento ideológico. Simplemente se trataba de sintetizar en una hora los pros y los contras de la aplicación del Plan Bolonia. Luego ellos deberían, en ejercicio de una madurez que ya se les supone, formarse  su propia opinión libre e informada sobre el asunto.  Tal vez con más pasión en los pros, que incisión en los contras, no se desarrolló el acto con la actitud pasiva, tímida y callada que cabría esperar de los bachilleres. Que a muchos les cabría esperar. Y esto me congratula especialmente. Tanto tiempo escuchando decir que los jóvenes somos unos paria sin opinión, cuando sólo hay que hablar un rato con nosotros para saber que eso no es así.

Al final, la mesa redonda entre todos acabó extendiéndose durante más de dos horas entre unas y otras cuestiones. Movilidad, titulaciones y becas centraron el debate que se suscitó. A destacar, la desinformación existente sobre las becas y los préstamos-renta, cómo afectará el E.E.E.S. a las becas Erasmus o qué pasará con filología. No se sabe que becas y préstamos  son dos políticas complementarias y no excluyentes, que la homologación europea abrirá nuevos horizontes a los Erasmus o que fillogía no es una titulación adaptada, en la Universidad de Oviedo, para este curso que viene.

Es necesario que las instituciones académicas se vuelquen en trasmitir, a las generaciones que realmente van a vivir Bolonia, el qué, el cómo y el cuándo de esta revolución docente. Hay que lograr hacerse entender e interesar. Sinceramente, he salido muy satisfecho de esta experiencia piloto que esperamos repetir en otros institutos de todo Asturias. Tenía miedo de caer en el aburrimiento y el desinterés, pese a que finalmente resultó ser lo contrario.

For the past couple of weeks one thing has been dominating my VS thinking, and that is the upcoming (still some time away actually) UK Nationals. I have decided that at the very least I want to put up a good show defending my title, and that means working out how to deal with a couple of very different formats.

I plan on tackling each in the next couple of weeks and giving my initial thoughts at least before I begin a process of focused testing to see what actually works and what just sounds cool on paper. With that in mind this week I’m going to be thinking about Bring Your Own Two Teams (For anybody that doesn’t know – Golden Age, you pick any two teams who are considered to be crossed-over and can only use cards that reference one of those two teams).

Lost Cities of Gold:

        To my mind there is one card that really defines this format and that is the Lost City. Now this isn’t a new thing. Lost City based deck (usually known as Big Brotherhood or sometimes Medium Brotherhood) were one of the dominant forces in early VS. Even once countermeasures were in place like Have a Blast! decks based around the Lost City using newer teams like Underworld or Kang would keep appearing and doing well. In fact the only real strike against these decks tends to be one of consistency, with Golden Age now dominated by even faster decks that tend to play a more combo-style game rather than simply dominating combat in the way the Lost City can.

        And that is why the Lost City is so important to BYOTT. It is not just the aggressive power of the card, letting you consistently stun defenders at little cost to yourself, including attacks well up the curve. It is the defensive power of the card. If you have to prepare for your opponent having +6 or +9 Defence on every attack you might propose then it can make for some almost impossible Attack steps. The new 1 cost Mystique combined with Avalon Space Station makes this a very real possibility. Even worse, the nature of the format precludes you from using most of the easily available solutions such as the aforementioned Have a Blast or similar cards like Death of the Dream. (Though the Brotherhood themselves have several location replacement effects available – any version of Avalanche and one plot twist: Shake, Rattle and Roll).

        In fact things get even better for Lost City based decks. The traditional flaw of any Brotherhood based deck has often been consistency, and that was certainly the case here. If you didn’t hit a Lost City early enough (or had it replaced), or kept drawing characters with the same name you could have big problems. Being able to add another team’s support like character or location tutors improves the consistency of the deck considerably making it a much more powerful choice. The only question then becomes which team you want to use. There are a whole bunch of options, but rather than go into too much detail I’ve just got a quick list here with a few brief comments on why:

1. Fantastic Four: Naturally big Characters, Signal Flare and Pogo Plane.

2. League of Assassins: Location Control for opposing Cities and lots of tutor effects and board control. Tower of Babel and Rise of The Demons Head give you lots of safe attack option).

3. Team Superman: Kelex and Superman Robots to find and protect cities. Clone decks are great for Powering Up.

4. Underworld: Lots of Deck Filtering and Search. Thanos. Powering Up Effects. Mephisto to Neutralise Avalon Space Station. Meatmarket/Satanna alongside Mystique.

5. Kang: Kang Cobra negates any other Lost Cities. Loads of Powering Up available.

6. JLA: New Era and lots of support for Powering Up (though Ally abilities won’t trigger).

7. Checkmate: Ahmed and more Location Support. Army OMAC characters great for Powering Up.

8. Inhumans: Lots of consistency enablers. Quicksilver.

9. Darkseid’s Elite: Another cloning deck. The ability to neutralise your opponent’s locations.

10. Spiderfriends: Another deck that supports multiple versions of the same character. Some nice consistency cards too.

        That is of course just a simple list, and it’s quite possible I’ve missed something here as well. The point is that there are lots of different ways to take the deck. My own choice (based on nothing other than team preference and card availability) would be Underworld, but there is nothing much wrong with any of these….Well other than this one little thing: I don’t really like Lost City decks very much. They are undeniably powerful, but I tend to not enjoy playing straight combat decks all that much which means I need to look for something a little different.

Lost Cities on Fire:

        Now it may seem from my talk above that I think that Lost City based decks are the pre-eminent deck for the format. That isn’t exactly the case, but I do think that they are one of the most powerful combat-based decks available. This means that whatever else I come up with has to be able to handle that. The benefit of trying to deal with a deck this powerful is that if I can, I should be fine against any other combat based decks. It also means I should be considering a more controlling strategy. One other effect of the format is that both Pathetic Attempt and Omnipotence are not available, which means that using powerful activated powers and targeted effects becomes a lot more viable than they otherwise might. Cards like Bullseye – Closer to God are much more appealing when you know that there isn’t much your opponent can do prevent their effect. The only problem now comes in choosing exactly what effects you might want to play. Having the whole Golden Age card pool available gives you all sorts of options, and far more than I would even want to think about. Instead I’m just going to go through the types of effects I would be looking at and seeing what sorts of examples I might be able to find.

        Exhaustion Effects: There are really three sorts of card here. The very best are those that work off-initiative, letting you shut down opposing attacks. While the two most used examples (Mystical Paralysis and Gift Wrapped) are not permitted by the format, there are still other choices available. The effects that are available tend to be printed on characters and are often cost based, so they are not quite as powerful, but they are still available. Probably the best example is Spiderman, with both a 4 cost and two very powerful 7 cost characters available. These also show off the kind of limitations involved. The smaller Spiderman has a cost based effect, and the larger two both need other members of their teams around in some way, and cards like Puppet Master and Air Walker can be worked around relatively easily. Off-Initiative exhaustion as I would like it seems rather difficult to find.

        There are two relevant sub-abilities to add to this picture however. The first are the on-initiative abilities. There are a whole bunch of these with again Spiderman providing some nice examples in Venom and Daredevil. While obviously weaker than being able to keep characters away when they could normally be attacking, abilities like this still help to take the game into later turns, which is surely the aim of any defensive deck. You can then concentrate on packing the rest of the deck full of defensive tricks to fend off the inevitable attacks. While the Spiderfriends are particularly effective at this, don’t forget cards like the Marvel Knights Spiderman, who can shut down entire attack steps by himself, or cards like Mystical Binding that prevent key characters from attacking at all.

The other addition to any potential exhaustion strategy is probably my favourite, and that is preventing characters from readying at all. Here we have much more scope. There are a whole bunch of characters to fill this role, ranging from Iceman – Jack Frost, to a bunch of Inhumans (Jolen, Nahrees, Medusa, Gorgon) as well as several plot twists from a variety of teams like Adhesive X and X-Men Don’t Kill. These cards can be extremely effective in their own right, especially reusable options like Iceman, but are particularly effective when combined with some of the tricks already mentioned. Having Daredevil exhaust your opponent’s team on your attack step and then have a bunch of Inhumans stop anybody from readying doesn’t really care how big your opponents characters are, and should drag the game on as long as you want. You even have a few cards that do the whole job for you like Prisoner of a Mad God and Extreme Manoeuvre.

        Direct Stuns: In many ways these are the most powerful tricks to have available when dealing with a combat focused deck, and luckily for us most of them are team-stamped, to stop them running riot in normal games, but easily available for BYOTT. Much like exhaustion, it would be nice to have these effects happen off-initiative like Terra or June Moon, but we will have to accept these as the rarities they are. There are three teams that stand out for me in this regard: The first are the X-Men. Almost any Gambit, Havoc (the old 4 cost from X-Men and the newer 7 cost from Marvel Evolution), Cyclops – Fearless Leader along with plot twists like Fastball Special and Power Nexus let you stun characters all day long without getting anywhere near a fight. The Teen Titans based a whole lot of their success on the abilities of Terra and Roy Harper, and my personal favourites are the Negative Zone. They may only trigger at the start of your attack step, but getting to stun even one character for free is rather nice, and adding another team to the mix helps with the otherwise lacking consistency.

        Direct KOs: I’m going to mention these, even though they are pretty rare. In normal games the high cost on most of these effects means that Pathetic Attempt makes them incredibly risky. With that out of the picture, they come to the fore. Almost all based on the Attack step in some way, from Brainiac to Punisher, there is nothing any combat deck (or in fact any deck) likes less than having its best characters cleared straight off the board. If you can build a reliable deck that can really make the most of one of these characters you should be in good shape for the rest of the game.

        Replacement Effects: Now admittedly these kinds of tricks are much more focused towards dealing with Lost City decks, but don’t underestimate their power against other opponents. Especially other controlling decks that are looking to build for a late game. Interestingly there are remarkably few of these available. A few teams have an odd card that can deal with Locations. Quakemaster, 3,2,1… and Black Bolt – Keeper of the Space Gem are all examples of odd cards that deal with that. Even fewer can get rid of ongoing plot twists. But there are two teams that can really mess with your opponent’s resource row. The first are the Kree. Several of their characters incidentally replace resources (Dylon Cir and Kona Lor) while Improper Burial and Bron Cha and Ronan the Accuser attack more directly. Your opponent generally gets the choice of what is replaced, but every little helps. Master of your opponent’s resource row is of course Darkseid, with all manner of ways of leaving lots of lovely face down cards in a row and then punishing you for it.

But where does that leave us?

        These ideas are all well and good, but right now that is all they are. I need to start working some of these into some concrete decks. Now obviously different players will build different styles of deck, and it is quite possible that I am missing something important, but I have had a few key thoughts of my own, based on some of these principles. In fact most of these combine at least a couple of the notions above, and I do plan on building them all.

1. X-Men/X-Factor. Similar to the deck I talked about previously, I’ll be combining the exhaustion power of Iceman/Rogue along with the Havoc endgame. It’s a style of deck I really like, and in fact I only need to change 6 cards from the list I already have. The problem is that 4 of those cards are Mobilise. It will be interesting to see if additional deck filtering tools like Worthington Industries will compensate enough for that lack of tutoring.

2. Negative Zone/Underworld. The Negative Zone characters give me a lot of punch, while the Underworld adds the missing consistency, along with a few handy characters and some excellent plot twists. It may be that the Underworld element is replaced by the Inhumans, who offer many of the same strengths, but a little more defensive ability. Both decks have their strengths.

3. Darkseid/Kree. Nothing like mixing two decks with the same basic plan together. The real attraction here is Ronan (either one) alongside powerful Darkseid cards like Dark Superboy and Kanto. That’s direct stuns and KOs along with some resource control in one deck, and I rather like the sound of that.

4. Marvel Knights/Somebody else. Echo – Masterless Samurai and Punisher – Captain America both equate to free stuns against combat focused decks, and in my experience most decks don’t enjoy having key characters KOd. All you need from your support team are a replacement for Mobilise and a nice combat trick or two.

Of course all this is just the first step of building decks. It may be that none of my ideas work at all (always very possible), and that they simply aren’t as much fun to play as I would have hoped. And then there is another new format to start thinking about as well. Still I hope you enjoy my first thoughts on just how I’m going to be defending my title.

Well, UDE has officially pulled the plug on VS. There will be no more sets for the forseeable future. No more prize support, no more officially organised events.

Considering that VS has been the cornerstone of the Lost Hemisphere for the last twelve months, I’m sure you can understand that this is a bit of a blow… but then, we’ve kinda been expecting it for several months.

The lack of communication from UDE since, well, MUN, other than the MEV previews, had many of us expecting the worst, and now it’s come to pass.

Thing is… this isn’t the end.

When UDE stopped organised play, the community pulled out their collective thumbs and started organising our own events, the most successful to date being the sheerly awesome Battle of the Border in New Hampshire.

These events are continuing, with stuff happening at UDE Day in Anaheim Feb 7th, and Battle of the Border: Texas in March as well as the events listed here, including the freakin UK Nationals.

If ANYONE knows how to party without official support by now, it’s the bloody poms. Goodonyer, mates!

And of course, there’s the CCG Day happening at the Hobby Kingdom in February, that I’m allegedly helping organise. For the record, the format for the main event is Golden BYOTT. More details coming in the next couple of days.

On top of all these fan events, I’ll point a hairy finger at this thread at VSRealms, where community visionaries are planning out the ongoing future of our beloved VS, as coordinated by folks with the will and drive to keep the dream alive.

UDE may have pulled the plug… but VS isn’t going anywhere until we say so.

Just before the holidays kicked in during the tail end of 2008, I suggested that we, the Vs. System community unite around what is and has been, great in our game during 2008.  I welcomed nominations in several catagories for your highlights of the last year and after a flood of responses both here and on VSRealms, I now have all the nominees lined up.
