Lo spettacolare oggetto luminescente ripreso a Tepexpan,Messico

L’oggetto è stato ripreso con un telescopio da Victor Gonzalez il 9 novembre 2009. Il testimone aveva riferito di avere già osservato qualcosa di strano nella settimana precedente. L’oggetto ha brillato nel cielo per circa un’ora.

“Lunedi  9 novembre ho visto una luce molto strana tra le nuvole,successivamente ho notato che la luce proveniva da un oggetto che si muoveva lentamente nel cielo.Mi è successo mentre andavo a prendere mio figlio a scuola.Poi ho portato il bambino a casa di mia madre, come faccio ogni giorno e sono tornato al negozio. Erano già passati circa 30 minuti e l’oggetto era ancora visibile,quindi ho detto a mio padre di prendere il telescopio. Questo video è stato registrato alle 14:30, regolando il telescopio ad una videocamera con zoom ottico di 40x.E’ durato a lungo,dalle 14 alle 15, fino a che non si è spostato da nord-est a sud-est.Questo evento e assai curioso perchè è simile ad un altro accaduto la settimana scorsa nello stesso orario.”

Introduction

In my continuing series on logical fallacies and how people use them in pseudoastronomy, this post will be on the somewhat interesting fallacy of, “Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire.” And it’s being written at a comfortable cruising altitude of 35,000 feet.

What’s the “Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire” Fallacy?

This fallacy is best-known as the, “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire” phrase because it’s catchy and easy to figure out what it means. The idea is simple: Where you see smoke, that means there’s a fire. The fallacy occurs because you have jumped to that conclusion without actually knowing what caused the smoke — several different things can create smoke or smoke-like effects without there being a fire involved.

This fallacy is more formally known as the “Hasty Conclusion” or “Jumping to a Conclusion” for that very reason — one jumps to a hasty conclusion without actually examining the evidence or anything behind the claim.

Example from UFOlogy

While most of my examples of fallacious logic have centered around Young-Earth creationists, some of the better examples of this fallacy in the realm of bad astronomy is employed by people who believe that UFOs are alien craft.

A timely example has to do with the very recent Vatican conference on astrobiology, where they invited many scientists from around the world to meet in the Vatican City to discuss the latest in that field. This is prefaced by, in recent years, the Vatican releasing edicts (sayings?, papers?, speeches? … whatever official stuff from the Vatican is called) stating that the existence of extraterrestrial life does not conflict with Church teachings.

UFOlogists have used the recent conference and each of these proclamations by the Vatican to to jump on this as evidence the “Vatican knows something,” and “The Vatican is about to do disclosure [of the UFO phenomenon.”

In my occasionally humble opinion, it is much more likely that the Vatican realizes it’s a distinct possibility that astrobiologists will, in the coming decades, find evidence of past or present life on other planets. Rather than take a very firm stand on something they realize could alienate more of the faithful by simply denying that would-be discovery, they are laying the foundation to be able to say, “See, it’s okay that life exists elsewhere, it doesn’t mean God didn’t create us, it just means that he also created life elsewhere!” As opposed to, “Yeah, that little green guy who’s shaking hands with the President? The Bible says he can’t exist, so he doesn’t.”

Another UFOlogy Example

One of the key tenants of the UFO = aliens movement is that The Government knows what’s going on and does its darndest to cover it up so the general public caan’t figure it out. Among The Government’s key enforcers are the “Men in Black” and the military.

Hence, whenever there’s a UFO sighting that gets any press, if there is any military activity in the area, be it troop movements, air drills, or the like, UFO proponents will call fire to that smoke: The military activity is proof that it really was an alien spaceship. This conclusion is made without any actual evidence of an alien biological entity or technology, it’s simply concluded after an unexplained sighting and then any subsequent military activity.

Final Thoughts

The Hasty Conclusion / Jumping to a Conclusion / Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire fallacy is usually an easy one to pick out. The fallacy simply relies upon, well, jumping to a conclusion on very limited evidence without actually trying to figure out what’s really going on.

Il ruolo dell’Accademia e’ stata di recente al centro di una aspra polemica tra il ministro delle Finanze, Simeon Djankov, e il presidente Georgi Parvanov.

L’agenzia spaziale dell’India comunica che, attraverso la missione senza equipaggio denominata  Chandrayaan-1, ha scoperto sfere magnetiche sulla Luna, sul lato oscuro del satellite. La scoperta potrebbe in teoria significare un soggiorno più lungo e sicuro per gli astronauti. La rivelazione è stata fatta da SARA, strumento di rilevazione fatto in collaborazione con ISRO, Agenzia Spaziale Europea e Svezia. I risultati sono stati divulgati da un gruppo di autorevoli scienziati, nel corso di celebrazioni tenutesi alla Indian Academy of Science. Si ipotizza che le micro-sfere magnetiche resistano oppure abbiano la capacità di deviare le radiazioni provenienti dal vento solare che colpisce la superficie lunare. Nel caso in cui vengano costruite grandi sfere magnetiche, queste potrebbero ospitare gli astronauti, i quali vivendo all’interno possono tranquillamente sopravvivere alle radiazioni esterne.

Ahora el actor tendrá una nueva oportunidad de ejercer su hobby (o el de sus personajes, que con el tiempo se transforma en lo mismo) gracias a UFO. La película adaptará la serie británica del mismo nombre, en la que Jackson será un agente de S.H.A.D.O. (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization), un agencia encubierta que opera bajo un estudio de Hollywood y cuya meta es salvar a la Tierra capturando alienígenas que abducen a humanos para usar partes de sus cuerpos. Matthew Gratzner dirige, perpetuando esa nueva costumbre que coloca a especialistas en efectos especiales a los mandos de futuras producciones.

I try to keep an open-mind on such things…I have witnessed UFOs myself. My question then becomes

WHAT ARE THEY?

Are they aliens? Government? Military? A combination?

I don’t know, but I will tell you this much…they ain’t good.

I know there is a school of thought that says the aliens are good, they are protecting us, etc etc…

I am sorry, but it seems to me that abduction is a pretty evil, scary thing. Especially when you don’t know who your bloody captors are.

There are a few possibilities here.

Military

Maybe it is the military, swooping up people and testing new and exciting aircraft. If they are, indeed, doing this…well, it ain’t good. They are doing things covertly, against their own people, withoug consent or prior knowledge.

Aliens

Okay, so maybe it is aliens, doing this on their own, without govt interference. They don’t inform us of their intentions, they leave bizarre clues, etc. They see what is happening to the earth and her inhabitants, yet they do absolutely nothing. They abduct people, try to implant objects and memories, etc. Sorry charlie, I don’t see how any good can come of this. If they are working alone, they are indeed evil.

The aliens, the govt and the military

Maybe they are all working together. Perhaps the aliens abduct people, the govt knows and allows it in exchange for technology and control, etc. Soo…this makes all entities involved evil.

I cannot entertain the possibility they are love and light. I am sorry, but I cannot. Look at human history and the control involved in such a thing.

I realize there are other tangible possibilities, but suspend your disbelief for a bit…ain’t no way they are here to help.

My wife and I drove up to Ventura and attended Dr. Roger Leir’s presentation on alien implants. Dr. Leir was also my guest last week on Acceleration Radio and I posted his interview from The Alien Interview book in its entirety on this BLOG site last week.

It was a great presentation filled with some very startling evidence. Dr. Leir went to a house where a person had claimed to be abducted. They conducted tests and found high levels of radiation in the back yard around an avocado tree. The dirt in the back yard ignited in spontaneous combustion. How’s that for off the charts strange?  The most chilling artifact that his team found was when they searched the house using an ultra-violet light. On the wall of the bedroom were two hand-prints of a four-fingered entity. The owner of the house allowed them to cut that section of the wall out in order to preserve the evidence and have it analyzed. Talk about a smoking gun!

Unfortunately, the UFO “conference” was poorly attended with about 25 people, including the four techies who ran sound and recorded the event. One would think that with the kind of evidence that Dr. Leir presented the room would be packed. Dr. Leir had a metallurgist analyze the objects that were taken out of people who had claimed to be abducted. While his presentation was extremely technical and beyond my pay-grade, the conclusion was that the material found and removed in the abductees, contained Nano tubes which are capable of carrying electrical and other information. The object that Dr. Leir removed, broke apart during the surgery, but later after it was re-submereged in a vile filled with the patients blood, Dr. Leir discovered that it began to reassemble itself! He also mentioned the interference that happens when he has appeared on radio shows. You may remember that when he came on Acceleration Radio the first time we experienced a high degree of interference,  so much so that it was almost impossible to understand his answers to my questions. At one point Dr. Leir asked how many people in the audience had been abducted. Out of the 25 people in the room about 8 people raised their hands. He then asked how many had seen a UFO and just about everyone had their hands raised. Dr. Leir isn’t sure where these entities originate from. He’s open-minded about it saying that they could either be extraterrestrial or inter-dimensional. I’m going to present my theory to him, as to why I believe they are inter-dimensional beings and that they are, to quote Jacque Valee, messengers of deception!

I want to close today’s post by saying that I applaud the work of Dr. Leir. He is a pioneer in the field of this very important research. His work proves without a reasonable doubt the following phrase. “While we may disagree as to what the cause of the UFO phenomena is, we can agree that it is real, burgeoning and not going away. Making a succesful break from Dawnson’s Creek to the mysteries of Fringe it appears that Joshua Jackson is on the sci-fi trail as he joins the adaption of the classic Gerry Anderson 1970s show, UFO (read what Anderson has to say about the adaption – also check out the cool what if concept art)

Directed by visual effects wiz Matthew Gratzner, Variety are saying that Jackson will star as Paul Foster, a test pilot who joins S.H.A.D.O. (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization), a covert org built under a Hollywood studio that defends Earth against a race of aliens who have been abducting humans and using the body parts. The series was a cult hit in the ’70s.

This film version appears to be following Foster as opposed to the series that focused on the leader of SHADO, Ed Straker (played by Ed Bishop) who had the cover of a Hollywood studio mogul. Looks as if we will be learning about SHADO along with Foster. The question is who will they get to play Straker in the new film.

Graztner, the visual effects supervisor on films ranging from the Martin Scorsese-directed “Shutter Island” to “Iron Man,” was set last summer to make his feature directing debut on a film that its producers said is aiming for a spring start in the U.K.

“Character development is the most critical part of ‘UFO,’ and Joshua’s terrific talent and range is exactly what I need to convey the inner conflict of the character of Paul Foster,” Gratzner said.

This has got to be the weirdest and definitly most awsome musical instrument I’ve seen in a while. I usually don’t have an musical instrument fetish, but this one totally stole my heart. I know little about it, other than it’s called a theremin, and that it uses radio waves going through the device and through you body. Obviously you can manipulate the pitch by changing your arms’ distance from the theremin.

I guess this is what they used to make that horribly awsome, yet horribly cliché UFO sound effect from all those low budget thirties science fiction films.

If I were to teach myself one really useless piece of know-how for the rest of my life, it would have to be to learn how to play the theremin. And I want to learn how to play these songs.
