I was a rave kid myself so I have seen some crazy shit and I wore the beads and 60″ pants with stars, the whole 9. That was weekend shit though. Come Monday everything was semi back to normal. Plus ravers liked to be clean. Dirtiness doesn’t look pretty on acid.

I feel like these kids are making asses of themselves, especially the guys. Don’t these boys know the hazards of wearing super tight pants? Oh well, maybe these guys don’t need to procreate anyways. I find it amazing these guys can get laid at all.

These “hipsters” are using these crazy outfits to distract from who they really are. Trying to act  like they are broke as hell in their $30 leggings and $200 hobo coats. I’ll be glad when this fad is over so I maybe I will be able to tell if that was a guy or a girl who just made my coffee.

When I look around the world, I cant help notice the juxtaposition of what seems to be amazing, and what seems to be broken. The world works so well in so many ways, yet simultaneously it doesn’t. The human body is an amazing feat of engineering/evolution. Medicine has broadened my understanding of the human body, but it has also just revealed how little we really know about it. It seems the more we learn, the more we realise we need to learn! It is incredible how well the body works together in harmony to produce a living, breathing, feeling human being.

… except when it doesnt work.

Hannah and I recently went to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in the central north island, we had spectacular weather, the days either side were miserable and raining, but on the day of the crossing, we had picture perfect blue skies. The walk was amazing, and the scenary spectacular (Click on the photo below to see the photos).

We couldnt help but marvel at God’s creation, at the beauty of it, and how amazing New Zealand is. I think we have particular appreciation for our own country after having travelled for a bit. There is amazing scenery overseas, but very often, we would think ‘we have this back in NZ… and its better!’.

Amongst all of this, we would make throw away comments about other things we want to do, like doing the whole northern circuit, cycling the Otago Rail Trail, walking some of the great walks in the South Island like the Milford, The Kepler, and the Heaphy. These are the kind of comments that get thrown around in day to day life for all of us. But it hit Hannah, and then me, of the significance of what were were saying.

How do you plan for future events and adventures when your future is uncertain?…

…and not uncertain in a ‘I don’t know where I will be be in years time’, but uncertain in a different way…

…Will I be alive in a years time?….

Hopes, dreams, plans, all shattered….. How do you live today when the future is at the very most, short, and at the least, gone altogether? My life, and my world, is both simultaneously beautiful and ugly. I can’t help but admire the beauty of the world, and lament the brokenness of it.

I have realised that this simultaneous juxtaposition is required for us to be able to appreciate either of these extremes. We need ugliness in the world in order to appreciate the beauty, and vice versa. Its through my ugliness, my brokenness that I now appreciate the world in a whole new light. Its my suffering that makes the world that much brighter, that much more colourful, and that much more worth living. It is cancer that has brought a whole new meaning to life, even if that life is much shorter than anticipated.

Conversely its the beauty of life that allows me to recognise the ugly; the injustice, the oppression, the suffering, the poverty, the needless loss of life, the insatiable greed for material goods. Recognising this does not empower me to better avoid it, but to better be a part of the solution of it. I think we instinctively use this recognising ability to avoid the ugly, instead of perhaps being the solution to it. Being the solution to the ugly and the brokenness…

That’s powerful…

… or even better…

… it’s beautiful…

Beauty and ugliness; the world works but it doesnt; both cannot exist without the other.

Some people refer to Thanksgiving as T-Day for short, or Turkey Day, to be clever. If I were these people though, I’d think twice about paying homage to the turkey. Like any other non-vegetarian Thanksgiving-goer, I like to eat my share of turkey. But one of the reasons I enjoy it so much is because I give thanks for this bird being dead.

The turkey is definitely one of the ugliest birds out there. So thank goodness it is dead and we are consuming it. I don’t need to see these birds living in the wilderness. They are ugly birds, so it is a good thing we decided to go with this selection to kill and eat on Thanksgiving.

While I’m on the subject of ugly birds, I will tell you that the turkey is not the only nasty-looking bird out there. Oh no, believe me, there are plenty of other disturbing birds out there. I don’t want to completely ruin your appetite today, so I will only provide you with a couple other examples.

Take the pelican. This prehistoric beast has the most intimidating mouth around (that’s what she said). Sure, this bird can seem graceful as it glides near the water looking for fish, but once it opens its mouth, you’ve got another creature you’re dealing with. This freak has an enormous mouth for fishing and you don’t want to get near one. (Check out this highly disturbing website for some truly gross pictures of the pelican’s disturbing beak.)

Last, but surely not least is the owl. For a while now, I have thought the owl is one of the scariest birds out there. Sure, owls have been made to be cute and a “cool, hip” symbol, but I tell you they are scary. Those big eyes staring you down, the curled, snappy beak, and that haunting pose of theirs where they basically just look like they are out to get you. And when they just happen to be ready to scare you they sure put on a display. (And by display, I mean terrifying freak show.) You are being forewarned, that you may want to hide your children and overt your eyes. What you are about to see, may give you nightmares…..

So on this holiday, when you sit down to chow on some turkey, don’t forget you are doing the world a wonderful service by ridding the land of such a foul foul. Nobody should have to look at such awful-looking birds. -Unless they are dead, on a plate, and covered in gravy and cranberry sauce, and stuffing. Then, by all means, forget these pictures and gobble away!

As Mos Def has been one lyricist I enjoy paying much attention to, this episode of “Embedded” goes on an all access seven-day tour of Japan while he performs his new album “The Ecstatic” to packed venues in Tokyo and Osaka. During that week, he hits up the Harajuku fashion district, whoops it up at a sumo wrestling match, and gets a personal tour of the Tokyo Giants stadium from his friend and baseball phenom Mark Kroon. Then, he brilliantly ties it all together by divulging the history of great thinkers known as “ecstatics,” showing that he is clearly one of the most insightful men in hip-hop.

Also joining Pimple — I mean Boyle — with a -4 rating were Thornton and Dany Heatley. For all the great stuff they’ve done recently, this game shat all over it. Good gracious, it was atrocious. They must be stunned to know you have to play defense too. What a concept!

First off, let me wish you all a happy ‘One Month Till Christmas’. It is funny how that ties in with today’s Reason to Smile.

Remember those ugly, I mean lovely, sweaters you may have gotten as a child from your Grandma or a distant Aunt? I remember having all sorts of interesting sweaters growing up.

Today at work everyone is being photographed in an ugly Christmas sweater. It is all part of our Christmas newsletter being sent out this year. We were all told to go out and find these hideous sweaters that we would cringe at as a child.

Well, you would not believe how challenging it actually was to find these sweaters! My first stop was the mall where I went into all of the stores that I pictures my Grandma shopping at. Nothing. One small Christmas store did have the perfect sweater for the occassion, but the price was not what I was willing to pay. The next logical place to look would be thrift stores. I took my boyfriend with me and we went up and down every aisle looking at every sweater. In the end we walked out with three ugly sweaters and smiles.

Today everyone at work will put on these sweaters and pose for the camera. If we are not smiling while we are getting ready, we will sure be smiling after looking at the photos. And anyone else who sees these photos will not be able to hold back their smiles either.

Take a second and think back to something hideous that you once wore as a child, or in your younger years. Forget the embarrassment from it and smile. Maybe even post a photo if you have one on your Blog or Facebook to share the smiles with your friends.

If you are one of the few lucky ones to own an ugly Christmas sweater, pull it out of your closet and wear it. Do it. What better way to celebrate one month until Christmas and it will definitely give you a smile. : )

Haha, I think this was very funny so I just had to write my thoughts back to that fat loser guy; then he goes banans on me too and for the past hours we’ve been throwing back and forth several long swearing comments at eachother.

A while ago, I wrote a post about my neuroses regarding how I look and feeling bad because I wasn’t “beautiful” but was ok with being cute, because I like cute things better than beautiful things.  The post was called “Are You Beautiful“, and it was, like a lot of the stuff I write, cathartic and cleansing for me to get out there.

But the other day, someone commented on this semi-old post, and as I read it, I thought “Wow, I feel bad for that girl.  She is really down on herself and I hope she is able to pull out of it.  I totally feel for her.”

Until I got to the end:

Really?  You’re telling me that I’m ugly?  Sure, I’ve heard that one before.  And worse things, too.  But here I was feeling bad for you because you felt so bad about yourself, and I quote:

I like this post a lot especially because I feel the same way as the writer. I have been self-loathing myself ever since I realised people NEED to look some way to be ACCEPTED. In high school, the pretty girls get all the advantage and ever since I’ve been trying to improve my looks. I am not fat, not thin either…somewhere in the middle. I hated mirrors ever since. I hated taking photographs too. Everything that remind me of myself would only make me feel worse. Sometimes I feel like going out with a brown bag over my head. I sense some projection, some self-hate, and there is also a possibility of trolliness in that comment. 

And I’m trying not to take it personally, because this person doesn’t know me, but I would be lying if I said it didn’t bother me.  Not because some random commenter might think I’m ugly, but more because this random commenter has probably been called “cute” on more than one occasion, and probably hates herself for it.  Which is wrong.  I don’t know what this girl looks like, but based on her comment, it’s obvious her self-esteem is in the toilet.  And as someone who knows what that is like, I know it can affect how others see you and what you “look” like.

But seriously – do you think CUTE = UGLY but ADORABLE? 

And no, Bianca – I’m not fishing for compliments….I’m curious how y’all feel about it…

I’m always fascinated by studies, especially studies having to do with psychology or anything similar.

However, yesterday I wondered whether there has ever been a study about the following thing… I would do it this way:

You have 6 beauties. 3 of them behave quite unfriendly and antisocial, the other 3 are friendly and nice.

Then you have 6 ordinary persons, neither looking too good nor too ugly. Like “the beauties”, half of them are nice, the others are grumpy.

To complete the whole thing, there are 2 persons to test on their minds; of course they don’t have any idea what the study is going to be about.

So now one of the “victims” has a look at the grumpy beauties and the friendly average persons. After just looking at them, he/she is having a conversation with all of them – where the grumpy ones will act cheeky and the others are supposed to behave decently.

Question: What’s going to happen with the subject’s mind?

1. After looking at the beauties, the impression is: “They are good-looking. They must be very polite and social people.”
   After getting to know them:
   [1] “Urgh. They are antisocial and not even good-looking at all.”
   [2] “They are antisocial. But at least they are looking good.”
2. After looking at the ordinary ones, the impression is: “They are average, nothing special, maybe even ugly. Hm. Perhaps they tend to be grumpy.”

   [1] “Right, they are ugly but at least they have good manners.”
   [2] “What a beautiful mind. They aren’t as ugly as I thought!”

So now the other subject has a look at the friendly beauties (acting politely in a conversation) and the antisocial average persons (acting… antisocial). And after that, having a conversation.

Same question, different solutions:

1. After looking at the beauties, the impression is the same as before.
   After getting to know them:
   “Good-looking person being nice. I didn’t expect anything else.”
2. After looking at the ordinary ones, the impression is also the same as before.
   After getting to know them:
   “Ugly person acting somewhat disgusting. I didn’t expect anything else.”

Well, after all I wondered two things:
1. Does our mind prevent us from regarding good-looking people as beautiful after they have been rude to us? Is it making us forget about the first impression we had?

2. Does our mind develop and “improve” our view on somebody being nice to us, who is actually looking more or less ordinary/ugly, to someone being a beauty?
