We soldiered the storm clouds last Thursday to see Geeneus, MistaJam and Ms Dynamite fill up Digital with an allsorts crowd of Kangol reppin’ jungle heads and 1st year blonde girls terrified of bass. Now, I gotta say I’m a painfully dedicated Ms Dynamite fan, if the Brownie Guides did a badge for reciting ‘Boo’ I’d have a gold plated one. So I was kinda tense at the prospect of seein Niomi Arleen McLean-Daley stepping back on to the sweaty stage and kicking out a hard party; BUT she ran the tightest show I’ve seen in ages.

A throbbing 40 minute set back 2 backed gleaming new tracks ‘Bad Gyal’ and ‘Lions Den’ with nostalgic explosions from ‘It Takes More’ and ‘Put Him Out’. A rush of UKG fanatical crowd jammed their way forwards, with girls hanging off beams and Dynamite plucking a few men out to lead some So Solid vocals, everything was on fire. There was total control and experience rattling out of that voicebox “I’m not a fucking DJ so don’t bother requesting, just get what you’re given and enjoy it” and it was totally enjoyed, even with a rotten apple VK in my palm and my jacket under every fucking photographers feet. I think at least 60% of the crowd pissed themselves when the chants of “hyperrrr” starting teasing out, and when Dynamite launched into ‘Boo’ it was a multi-heart attack for everyone between those balmy walls. It was like listening to it first time around in Falaraki wearing a camo print Morgan skirt and ugly wooden wedges from Faith; I could almost smell the fish-bowl cocktails and tropical vomit.

Nostalgia to one side, this was a fucking titanic night and when the long-long-long-time awaited album ‘Democracy’ FINALLY arrives I’m gonna gel my hair for a month in ode.

Start flexin that white tracksuit again- Dy-na-mi-tee:

After leading a techno/dubstep hybrid charge on his visionary Channel Two 12″, Aerial LP, and more, the Netherlands-born producer hasn’t yet outgrown his affection for minimal Berlin sounds. Huismans treads more melodic, danceable ground on sophomore full-length Unbalance, dazzling with curt drum edits and rather inventive compositions altogether. Read the rest of what I have to say at Blurt, and check out 2562’s FACT Magazine mix here.

I have a lengthy essay about Falty DL’s 2009 output in the November issue of the Brooklyn Rail, an 11-year old progressive politics-, arts-, and culture-focused newspaper based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Grab a massive slice at Anna Maria when you get off at the Bedford Ave. L stop in Williamsburg this weekend, and scoop up an issue of the Brooklyn Rail on your way out the door. If you’ve made a point not to be in the area because you really don’t need to be around for another Yankees parade, check out my piece on NYC producer Falty DL here, and the rest of the issue is available here. Grab Falty’s mix from Sonic Router here.

Basic Element – This Must Be A Dream

Basic Element – The Ride

Basic Element – The Fiddle

When we got the tip off for a So Solid re-birth there were visions of Asher D lacing up his Air Max, Ms Dynamite flexing her gunfire vocals and Neutrino bleaching his roots for a strong team reunion. Then we got the video and the hype balloon popped. This is unfortunately, the kind of come-back that stinks of overdrafts and overdue mortgage payments – a need for cash flow and credit.

‘Since you Went Away’ has some high points: Lisa Maffia’s vocals are as sharp and decent as they ever were, Romeo still growls along like a new engine, but the court-side seats and suit\shades combination don’t make us wag our tails the way we hoped – this guy was a uk garage heartTHROB – now he looks like the guy from HSBC that still wears CKOne. Mega puts on a reliable show, some neat rhymes and traditional style, but the groupies and 90’s chorus melody just doesn’t offer enough.

The kind of UKG comebacks we’ve seen recently have been explosive. Ms Dynamite’s ‘Bad Gyal’ is a contender for track of 2009, Maxwell D and his ‘Blackberry Hype’ led rise is a transformation into quality UK Funky and inimitable MC style, We’ve seen Zed Bias sticking a bass heavy luxury seasoning over ‘Neighbourhood’ making something so era-definitive into a contemporary 2009 highlight. MJ Cole has teamed up with some of the UK’s most important DJ’s (L-Vis 1990, Toddla T) and rattled out quality work that pushes his talents in front of a whole new audience. Even Heartless Crew have made a valiant and respectable effort with ’The Greatest 09′, with nods to bashment popularity.

So Solid – you’ll always have a warm spot in our heart – but like my year 8 history teacher always said :

MUST TRY HARDER.

Ok, this hasn’t been done before to my knowledge. Having a short flashback conversation with my boy Mr Stylus reminiscing the good old days when UK Garage was on top of the music scene. I started out extremely influenced by the UKG scene and attempted (i say that with a pinch of salt) to emulate DJ EZ. His skills and techniques within sets would embarrass any other DJ and the way he could cut up a tune whilst an MC was freestyling over the beat was ridiculous.

I had to upload one of the biggest sets for you all to appreciate how big it was back in the day.
Garage Fever 2003! Shout out to the legends in the game, DJ EZ, MC Viper, B-Live, CKP, Sparks & Kie on this one.

Leave comments if you appreciate the flava raver! This is BAWSE !

BD

I don’t have anything remarkable to share with respect to an excuse for not updating The Whisp

I don’t have anything remarkable to share with respect to an excuse for not updating The Whisper Council. I’ve been working on a couple of longer review pieces that I’ll link to when they are published, and I suppose that’s what kept me behind over here for the most part. I’ve been absorbing a great deal of solid 2009 releases — in promo form and in purchases from local retailers — it’s almost hard to run down a list of the good stuff that’s been in my headphones and in the living room of late. I’m also thinking that there might need to be a couple of changes around here that would somewhat improve the look of this blog, but I don’t quite know what they should be yet. Anyways, GO PHILLIES, and come on in, fall weather. Right now it’s green tea and the first Adem record, but here’s what I’ve been listening to on the trips back and forth into the city over the past couple of weeks. And thanks for your repeat visits to this site.

Although the Brackles number on the Mary Anne Hobbs comp doesn’t grab me in the manner that the other artists on there do, his Rawkus 12″ on Planet Mu snaps and cracks hard. Rob “Brackles” Kent steers winding, stringy synth lines over punchy breaks for “Air Pie,” which is so incredibly frazzled it’s tough not to jump up on the desk at work and throw everything off it when this comes on. The kick is as prominent as possible on “Air Pie,” while Kent’s gurgling set of analog-sounding organs and glassy 8-bit patterns dance around vocal samples and a playful bassline. I’m now revisiting “LHC” on Wild Angels; maybe I just missed out on its overtly melodic arrangement and driving garage rhytmn because he was in such good company? Get Brackles’ grime-loaded FACT mix here.

I had intended to write a lengthy post on Broadcast’s new collaborative effort that finds them paired with London experimental musician Julian “The Focus Group” House. Instead, I’ll direct you to fetch the October issue of The WIRE magazine; Joseph Stannard’s cover story, which traces this record’s odd and wondrous aesthetic from conception onward, is a superb example of contemporary music journalism (unedited interview transcript here, but go buy the actual magazine). I would definitely reference early psyche/electronic explorers The United States of America and their 1968 self-titled opus in describing Broadcast & The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age, but there is a lot more to say about this new mini-album on Warp and its far-out brew of tape loop collages and acid pop. Recommending this one for long train rides — it’s hardly an easy listen, but I’ve grown fond of it anyway. All this noise and freakish samples, peppered with segments that lend more of a song structure like “Witch Cults”…it’s really jarring.

The world lost another incredibly talented musician by the name of Anthony Williams in September. Having garnered across-the-board critical acclaim for years as turntablist Grand Master Roc Raida, this loss won’t be soon forgotten for anyone who’s had the distinct pleasure of seeing him perform live. I didn’t have the chance to see him on the decks, but I hold in high regard 1997’s X-Pressions, the first-ever turntablist group LP from Raida’s masterful outfit, NYC’s The X-Ecutioners, which were formerly The X-Men. Members Roc Raida, Rob Swift, Mista Sinista, and Total Eclipse are collectively an unbeatable cast on X-Pressions. Their debut is a hard testament to the unheralded critical importance of the DJ in hip hop, but it also stands as a manifesto of the then-fledgling turntablist genre that, on this album, happens to sound like the turntable-as-instrument art was already decades-old. I’m recommending that you check out the cuts that fire through the pugnacious “One Man Band,” which is one of my favorites here. Then, head over to Unkut for a marvelous rundown of forgotten beats that Raida put together in the producer’s chair, and see DJ Step One’s blog for a Raida Hot 97 set circa 1994 (be mindful of the questionable ad content at Mediaupload when opening at work). DJ A-Trak penned a lovely tribute here. My condolences to Roc Raida’s family and friends; he will be sorely missed.

Lookin at the heavy tonnes of tunes Noodles have worked on over the last 13 years is like a research project of my dancing carbon-footprint. Since 1996 when Noodles set up the Groove Chronicles and DPR record labels, he’s been pushing diamond nuggets of UK Garage into our ears. If I built a royal palace for UKG pioneers, Noodles would be there in some gem encrusted chaise longue with Wookie, MJ Cole and The Dreem Team hanging about, playing pool with fabergé eggs.

Noodz recently produced a pure UKG mix for FACT magazine, featuring a Milk Tray type combination of Zed Bias, Sunship, Archetects , Artful Dodger and acres more. This mix is the kinda thing you rediscover and never wanna put down, like eggs and soldiers, jager bombs and My So Called Life – nostalgic, exciting and fucking DELICIOUS.

Our favourite track of last year was clearly Kyla and Paleface’s ‘Do you mind’, her latest is just as nice, like bossanova and sangria. It’s kinda late for a summer anthem but this will definitely see us out until the end of August.

Plus it’s good to see Crazy Cousinz step it up with some variation, one sample gives us flash backs to Aladdin on the Mega Drive which was a way younger summer obsession.

We wouldn’t mind spending the whole night.
