That’s about how I felt this weekend. We set out for Garmisch early on Friday, and though it was cold (low 20s maybe?), there was very little snow on the ground and the road conditions were great.

We drove about 2 hours to Ülm, where we stopped to see the Ülmer Münster (we stopped there in 2007) and the Christmas market out in front of the church. We grabbed lunch, explored and headed back to the car about an hour and a half later. The next part of the drive was supposed to take 2.25 hours, but I think it ended up taking more like 3.5. We drove by Neuschwanstein so everyone could see it. It was extra beautiful because everything was covered in snow. (I have photos but they’re on my mom’s camera, and we haven’t uploaded them up. I will do a big photo update later!)

Part of our drive took us through narrow country roads in Austria. This is where we had a bit of a scare. We were running low on gas, and the GPS said the nearest gas station was about 30 km away! The roads were slick (covered in snow and ice) and it was about 6 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Needless to say, John and I were pretty tense during the last leg of the trip. We finally got to Garmisch just before the sun set. We got settled in our rooms and headed out to dinner to Antica Roma (our favorite pizza place, visited in 2007 and early 2009 too). It was delicious, as always. It was a bit too cold to stay out for anything else, so we came back to the hotel. John and Andrew went to the casino, my parents went to their room, and I took a LONG bath.

That night, when I went to take my contacts out, I was amazed to discover that I didn’t have a contact in my right eye. However, my right eye hurt quite a bit. I put some drops in and went to bed. All the next day, my eye hurt. Finally, while I was removing my makeup Saturday night, a contact came out of my right eye. It had been stuck under my eyelid. Ouch!!

So…back to our weekend – Saturday morning, we headed up to the Zugspitze, the highest mountain peak in Germany. We took about half the distance by train and the other half by cable car. It takes about 1.5 hours each way. Yikes! Unfortunately, the clouds were too heavy that day, and as a result, the visibility was very low. At one point, while we were walking around at the top, I thought I was going to die (or that I might lose a toe or finger). It was below O (degrees F) and very windy. I also struggled with a bit more altitude sickness than I did the last time around. Nevertheless, we still enjoyed a cup of coffee and a glass of beer up on top of the mountain – one on the Austrian side and one on the German side. (Yes, you can walk from one country to the other at the top of the mountain.)

That afternoon, we did a little shopping, relaxed at the hotel and had a steak dinner at one of the lodge restaurants. We tried to go to the hot tub that night, but the heat wasn’t working well enough and there was ice around the ledge, so it was closed. Booo.

Sunday morning, we went on a short hike in Partnach Gorge, packed up and checked out of the hotel and headed to Munich. The road conditions weren’t very good and it was 4 degrees F outside. Eek!

Once we got to Munich, we had lunch at the Hofbrauhaus. I’d wanted to make it there during our time in Germany, so I’m glad we were able to stop off. The original plan was to go to Dachau Concentration Camp after that, but we didn’t have time. I’m really glad we didn’t stop, too, because once we got about an hour from home, there was really heavy snowfall. The roads weren’t great and neither was the visibility, and I was relieved when we got home. (John did a fabulous job of driving us!)

We were really glad to get home to Béni, too. Our friends Zed and Shaunna had been watching him for the weekend. Shaunna posted a cute picture-laden post about their weekend together – you should check it out, especially since I’m so lacking in the picture department today.

Why do we do what we do?

Awhile back (nearly a year ago, actually), I wrote bit called “Militant Optimism” — all about how crazy you had to be in order to start a company from scratch, particularly in the Great Recession. Since I blathered about this, 70,000 apps have been added to the app store, and two of them belong to us: FaceFighter and Zombie Pizza.

I am incredibly proud of both of our games: they’re creative, addictive to play and damn funny. The sound alone cracks me up — right now I can hear plaintive grunting of zombies and the faux Italian accent of Chef Zomboni as O’Connor struggles with Zombie Pizza in a vain attempt to beat my recently acquired high score.

Making games is a hard dollar — it mixes all the riskiest aspects of entertainment development (will people like your game concept) with all the riskiest aspects of software development (will the software actually run). Doing innovative games with your own IP is frankly, pretty nutty. Competing with 25,000 other games on a very crowded app store for a 2 bucks a pop probably puts you right into Arkham Asylum territory.

So why do it?

Because we can’t help ourselves.

Because we are compelled to drag something personal and new into the world that’s not a pop commodity. Because of Kid Geek and all the potential Kid Geeks out there.

We put these quotes on the wall before we had developed a single game — to give us mojo through the tough times of second guessing, indifference and doubt that plagues all creative endeavors.

Okay, so how again did these giants of commerce, industry and entertainment inspire us to make Zombie Pizza, exactly? And should they be angry? Look, don’t get too literal, okay? It’s not about the what, it’s about the why. At heart, we are class clowns trying like hell to find the joke that will “kill” our audience. We obsessively mold our material, and practice our lines, kneading the doughy mass of game design into shape, then baking it just long enough. We mix metaphors like crazy until the thing is just right because we really want the joke to WORK, damnit. We kill ourselves to make 2 dollar games not because they will save lives or “put a ding in the universe,” but because it MATTERS that much to US. Paying off the joke and getting the belly laugh is what we live for.

But its tough to make a living this way. It’s infinitely easier to create something from a template or market something which already has a profile in a crowded and distracted world.

But all is not lost — because the Kid Geeks out there are multiplying fast!

Being in the belly of the App Store as it has grown from a tadpole into a dragon we see first hand both the pressures and the joys of this evolution in action.

Sooner than anyone thinks possible, the millions of smart phones will be turning into hundreds of millions of App Phones. Not only are these new gadgets disrupting existing businesses, they are disrupting the audience itself, changing they way they live, work and play.

That’s a lot of Kid Geeks.

And they’re going to be looking for one giant pile of laughs!

For our 57th large permanent replica, we go back to Germany, southern Germany in the state of Baden-Württemberg, near the city of Ulm, to the town of Ermingen, where there is a longstanding, possibly ancient tradition of beacon burning on the first Sunday of Lent. Since this site, on a prominence with a clear view in all directions, needs to be kept clear for the beacon, someone came up with the idea of placing stones to track the movement of the sun.

And once you bring up the concept of tracking the sun with stones set in the ground, it’s never long before someone mentions Stonehenge. Hence this rather nice if odd trilithon. That lintel looks like a little cap, doesn’t it?

We don’t know much about this one–who did the planning and building, what kind of stone was used, how it was assembled. Did they use mortice-and-tenon construction as at Stonehenge? All we know is what we found at this link from Stadt Ulm Online’s Ermingen page (a couple of good pictures there, too). [Note: the term translated there as radio beacon would be better translated as relay or broadcast beacon. Funken doesn't mean radio on this context.]

Herr Thom has posted a nice video of the stone circle and a walk through the trilithon. Click here to see it. Nicely done! Translation of the caption there includes this: “On the days of the summer solstice and the winter sun turn within the stone circle determined points are illuminated by the stone gate through of the sun.” At certain times of the year the sun shines through the trilithon onto special points within the circle.

Ermingen, by the way, is known among fossil buffs as the site of the Turritellenplatte, a unique outcropping of rock rich with fossils of Turritella, a kind of mollusk shell. We don’t know whether any of that rock was used for this structure, but if it was, we would approve. That fossil/megalith connection is in need of strengthening.

Ermingen is also surrounded by many ancient sites, including a cave, Hohle Fels, that is thought to have been inhabited as early as 30,000 years ago. Found there so far were a Venus figurine and bone and ivory flutes, the earliest musical instruments ever found. Brilliant stuff! Let’s go visit!

Score: 6 druids. We like the site, we like the beacon, a very old way of communicating, and we like the fact that there’s a circle rather than just a trilithon. Now we wonder what new large permanent replica will pop up next!

Achille Iolascon, Ordinario di Genetica Umana alla ‘Federico II’ di Napoli e da anni impegnato nella comprensione dei meccanismi molecolari alla base di patologie a carico del globulo rosso, ha portato alla identificazione del gene responsabile della malattia CDA II, ed è stata pubblicata recentemente (embargo scaduto il 28 giugno ore 19:00 italiane) sulla prestigiosa rivista americana Nature Genetics, ad elevato fattore di impatto, pressoché identico al fattore di impatto delle altre note riviste di settore come Science, Nature e Cell.

La CDA di tipo II, oggetto dello studio, è la più frequente ed è caratterizzata da anemia di grado variabile, ittero intermittente, calcoli biliari, ingrossamento del fegato (epatomegalia) e della milza (splenomegalia) e accumulo di ferro nei tessuti.

Prima della scoperta del gene responsabile della malattia da parte del gruppo di Achille Iolascon, la causa dell’insorgenza della CDA II non era chiara: l’identificazione del gene candidato nella manifestazione della malattia non solo ne permette una migliore classificazione ma soprattutto apre importanti scenari per una diagnosi precoce della patologia e per fornire ai pazienti l’assistenza clinica necessaria.

I’m an iPhone tease. I won’t fully commit, but I will drop by the local Apple store on a weekly basis and play with one. I gently rub my caffeine-stained fingers over its sleek, sensual form, and I’ll try a few apps but I always pull out without ever finishing one. I tease because I’m scared. With augmented reality apps like Sekai Camera calling to me like mermaids on the shore, I can’t get sucked into the world of virtual dating. I’m a family man, after all.

But that lure hooked at least one Japanese man, who calls himself Sal9000 after the computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey (ask your grandparents about it). Anyway, Mr. 9000 didn’t just get hooked on virtual dating through his iPhone. It was much more than that. Thanks to his Nintendo DS, he fell in love and instead of just lapping at the free digital milk, he’s buying a pixilated cow. He’s going to marry a dating sim called Love Plus which features the love of Mr. 9000’s life, Nene Anegasaki.

Nicht vom Regen in die Traufe, aber vom Regen in den Nebel bin ich mit meinem Umzug vor gut fünfeinhalb Jahren gekommen. Denn während Aachen (zumindest unter seinen Bewohnern) als Regenloch gilt, ist Ulm ein Nebelloch. Das hat wohl irgendwas mit der Kombination aus der Lage am Albhang und der vorbeifliessenden Donau zu tun. Jedenfalls ist es wirklich sehr auffällig, vor allem zu dieser Jahreszeit, dass schon wenige Kilometer ausserhalb der schönste Sonnenschein herrschen kann, während es in der Stadt den ganzen Tag aussieht wie in einem Edgar Wallace-Film. Mir persönlich macht das jetzt nichts aus, denn ich sehe die romantischen Seiten. Zum Beispiel:

Car2go, il programma di noleggio delle Smart avviato con successo nella città tedesca di Ulm, varca l’Atlantico e arriva nella texana Austin. Le modalità di organizzazione saranno sostanzialmente le stesse del progetto europeo: s’inizierà con una flotta di duecento fortwo, riservate a un gruppo limitato di utilizzatori (in Germania si trattava di dipendenti della Daimler, che ha a Ulm un centro ricerche).

Poi, nel corso del prossimo anno, il numero delle Smart disponibili per il noleggio sarà aumentato e il servizio reso disponibile a tutti i cittadini di Austin e ai numerosi studenti che vi risiedono per buona parte dell’anno. Punto di forza del sistema è la facilità d’uso: gli utenti registrati possono utilizzare l’auto 24 ore su 24 prendendola per strada là dov’è stata lasciata o prenotandosi on line.

Non ci sono orari o luoghi di restituzione; finito l’uso, si parcheggia la Smart dove si vuole rendendola disponibile per un altro utente. La tariffazione è basata sul tempo di noleggio e scatta nel momento in cui l’utente digita il proprio codice personale su un’apposita tastiera di cui le vetture sono munite.

A Ulm le prime 200 Smart sono state noleggiate circa dal 15% di tutti i cittadini titolari di patente; nel 90% dei casi l’utilizzo non è stato prenotato in anticipo, ma attivato direttamente sul posto. Ad Austin, vista l’ampiezza tipica delle città americane, l’iniziativa sarà limitata all’area denominata “greater downtown”, nella quale lavorano oltre 60.000 persone.

Le Smart potranno essere parcheggiate gratuitamente e saranno pulite e rifornite dal personale della società di gestione; chi si troverà nelle condizioni di dover fare il pieno potrà utilizzare una carta pre-pagata disponibile nel cassetto portaoggetti della vettura e si troverà un credito di 10 minuti di uso gratuito dell’auto per compensare il tempo perso alla stazione di servizio.

Molte altre città americane hanno manifestato interesse per questa sperimentazione che seguiranno con attenzione.

Ein weiterer Höhepunkt der Charity Veranstaltung ist das Michael Jackson Double Sascha Pazdera. Ereben sie ein Spektakel der Superlative bei dem Live Act, der den “King of Pop” atemberaubend nah bringt.

Zu Anfang eine lockere Diskussionsrunde bei der ich mich schon gefragt habe, was denn der Grund für das Treffen sei. Ok, wir, bzw. die Grünen, haben noch auf Teilnehmer gewartet – und dann kam ER, der große Zampano, der Kreisverbandsvorsitzende Jürgen Filius!
“Ok, alle (ich) da? Einer fehlt? Egal! Fangen wir an!”
Zuerst das Eingeständnis, daß er überhaupt keine Ahnung von den Piraten hat, mit denen hat er sich erst beschäftigt als die den Grünen Stimmen bei der Bundestagswahl geklaut haben. Und natürlich die üblichen Vorurteile: Ein-Themen-Partei, nur Männer, nur Internet…
Wir haben diese Vorurteile natürlich entkräftet, was aber nicht sonderlich interessiert hat. Kein Kommentar mehr dazu, sondern dann ganz direkt:
“Die Grauen Panther waren beim Anfang der Grünen so eine Art Altersabteilung der Grünen, wollt ihr Piraten eine eigenständige Partei bleiben oder wollt ihr die Jugend-/Internet-Abteilung der Grünen werden? Die Grauen Panther haben damals keinen Wahlkampf gegen die Grünen betrieben und dafür Listenplätze bei den Grünen bekommen”
Dumm gelaufen für den Herrn Filius – einstimmiges und sofortiges Nein der anwesenden Piraten!
Wir haben den Grünen eine punktuelle Zusammenarbeit angeboten, z.B. beim Bildungsstreik, aber ich habe das Gefühl, daß das Gespräch für den Herrn Filius zu diesem Punkt schon zu Ende war. Die anderen Grünen haben eh nicht mehr viel gesagt, nachdem ihr “Chef” da war.
Das einzige, was noch Interesse hervorgerufen hat, waren die Basisdemokratie und wie wir das machen wollen, nachdem die Partei auf ein Viertel der Größe der Grünen (*schluck*) gewachsen ist, die Einstellung zu regionalen Themen und ob wir bei unseren Themen bleiben wollen oder ob ein Vollprogramm kommt.
Selbstverständlich haben wir ganz transparent geantwortet – irgendwie schienen die Sorgenfalten bei J. Filius tiefer zu werden…

Das Achitektur-Büro für Möbeldesign und Innenarchitektur in Ulm, wird von Frau Dipl. Ing. (FH) Staib geleitet. Erfolgreich abgewickelte Projekte umfassen die Bereiche Wohngebäude, Lofts und Geschäftsräume. Ausserdem werden auch Praxen, Hotels und Fitnessstudios gestaltet.

Die unimess GmbH hat für das Architekturbüro die komplette Internet-Präsenz entwickelt. Angefangen beim Webdesign über die Programmierung zur Suchmaschinenoptimierung. Auch in Zukunft kann sich Frau Staib auf unsere Betreuung verlassen.

Was für ein Filmabend! Ich bin mittelmäßig verstört, nachdem ich mir meine Fernreise längs durch die halbe Bundesrepublik mit einem Heimatstreifen versüßen wollte. Da es draußen schon dunkel ist, dachte ich, es könnte nicht schaden, statt aus dem Fenster auf bewegte Bilder auf dem Monitor zu schauen. Ich hatte vor der Abreise “Gernstls Reisen – Auf der Suche nach dem Glück” erworben. Nichts wusste ich von diesem filmischen Werk und seinen Machern. Das ist für mich immer gut, dann bin ich zumeist weniger hinterher enttäuscht.

Der Film beschreibt eine 23 jährige Rundreise durch Deutschland und ist als Dokumentation konzipiert. Die ersten 15 Minuten sind die schonungsloseste und verstörendeste Berichterstattung über den Alltag in den frühen 80ern, die ich je gesehen habe. Hier wird alles gezeigt, Vorstadttristesse, Hammer-Dauerwellen und modebewußte Sannyasins.

Die Landbevölkerung bringt den Filmemacher an seine Grenzen. Minutenlanges Schweigen wird hier zur reaktionären Stimme einer ganzen Generation.

Die halböffentliche Ausstrahlung (ist Videogucken im Großraumwagen bereits eine GEMA-pflichtige Vorführung?) der Sequenz, in der die Frauengymnastik einer Dorfgemeinschaft begleitet wird, führte mich überraschend in die völlige Isolation. Mein Sitznachbar, ein Mitfünfziger mit schickem Anzug und Blackberry, wollte nicht länger diesen radikalen Bildern beiwohnen und setzte sich, trotz völlig überbuchtem ICE, irritiert weg. Ich hätte nie geglaubt, dass ich mit einem Heimatfilm diesen Erfolg haben könnte.

So verpasste der liebe Handelsreisende die aufschlussreiche Episode über die Aussteigerfamilie, die ausgerechnet in einer Einflugschneise ihr wildes Campinglager aufgebaut hatte.

Die dokumentierte Reisezeit in den damals noch jungen Osten der Republik, war kaum auszuhalten und hinterließ bei mir einen faden Beigeschmack. Hier wurde mit naiven und grenzdibilen Gestalten ein (hoffentlich) verzerrtes Bild einer ostdeutschen Bevölkerung gezeichnet, das nur schwer zu ertragen war. Erstaunt war ich, wie schnell ich ob der einzelnen Sonderlinge in den ca. 80 Minuten Filmmaterial abstumpfte und mich nicht mehr wundern konnte, als Interviewer Gernstl einen bayrischen Jesus ausfindig machte und danach einen Biobauern traf, der glaubhaft versicherte, dass er mit den Bakterien in seinem handgefertigten Käse stundenlange Gespräche führe.

Besondere Beachtung verdient das Bonusmaterial. Der Besuch beim Bürgermeister von Ulm, ist eine Sternstunde bewegter Bilder. Dieser Film geht als DAS Lehrvideo für Kommunalpoliker durch (mit Wiederwahlgarantie!)

Dieser Film hat das FSK-Prüfsiegel “ab 0 Jahre freigegeben” erhalten. Mir ist nicht klar, wie die gezeigten gesellschaftlichen Irrungen harmloser eingestuft werden können, als die Texte des aktuellen Rammstein-Albums. Zensursula und ihre Bande sind mir hier einfach zu inkontinent.

Ein kleiner Zusammenschnitt des kommentierten Films:

Nein, mein Blog ist nicht zusammengebrochen. Aber ansonsten war es wirklich eine Woche der Demontagen. Zum Beispiel in meinem Badezimmer. Obwohl das hier erst die Vorhut der Demontage darstellt:

…und dann auf einmal wieder reibungslos funktionieren. Ah, wo ihr gerade “reibungslos” sagt, die positive Demontage der Woche erolgte dann gestern in der Kuhberghalle hier zu Ulm, als bei den Basketballern endlich der berühmte Knoten geplatzt ist – 111:88 gegen Göttingen und der Pauls mittendrin…

Schön, dass das auch die geladenen Stadträte miterleben durften, die nächste Woche über die Multifunktionshalle Ulm/Neu-Ulm abstimmen, die die Basketballer so dringend brauchen, um in der Liga weiterspielen zu dürfen. Denn noch wird in jeweils 12stündiger Arbeit vor jedem Heimspiel die Halle umgebaut und hinterher wieder zurück in eine Schulsporthalle:

Ach ja, und morgen geht’s zur Abwechslung auf Montage – die meiner neuen Krone beim Zahnarzt.

Bir gün, bir kelime: delik – Loch

Riguardo alla manutenzione è vero che vengono fatte a discrezione del proprietario, ma è anche vero e lo ripeto l’ ennesima volta, che nessuno di noi è un aspirante suicida e al sottoscritto è gia’ capitato di restare a terra un paio di volte perchè il mezzo non era a posto al 100% (questa procedura si chiama CONTROLLO PREVOLO e la fanno tutti).

Io quando sono per aria non voglio avere pensieri di sorta, voglio solo godermi la liberta’ e la gioia di guardare il mondo dall’ alto, liberta’ e gioia che solo il volo (in tutte le sue forme) ti puo’ donare.

commento inviato il 10-08-2009 alle 10:29 da roby crash non conosco l’esatta dinamica dei fatti, ma da quello che posso intuire penso che si tratti di uno stallo in atterraggio, mi sembra strano che il pilota non abbia visto la manica a vento e che abbia impostato un atterraggio in favore di vento,più probabile che avesse un vento relativo al traverso e abbia rallentato il pioner 200 più del dovuto mandandolo in stallo, commento inviato il 10-08-2009 alle 09:07 da federico per nestor …:gli ultraleggeri non sono delle bari volanti ma la manuenzione,rispetto agli aerei dell’aviazone generale,sono a discrezione del proprietaro,per cui volano a proprio rischio(e a volte a quello degli altri) e pericolo.I piloti di ulm pero a volte non conoscono le regole del volo e si credono dei top gun infatti la percentuale di incidenti di ultraleggeri rispetto agli aerei di aviazione generale è molto piu alta.Ci sara un motivo, no’
