OK so I think I stole that title from EL Docotrow’s Ragtime. But I just read about Edwin Merwin Jr. and Jim Ulmer , a couple of South Carolina county officials who happen to be Republicans.

Apparently a South Carolina newspaper published the following:

“There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves,” according to the piece published Sunday in The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg.

Once I got over the shock that there are actually newspapers in South Carolina (actually I was shocked that they might contain more than comics). I noted the fall out from the county officials remarks. Bill Nigut, SE Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League, says an apology is not enough!

Now days, outrage is, well, all the rage. These two dumb crackers are obviously not particularly insightful. They’re probably insensitive. But I have to ask, like Peter Beinart, since when is calling someone fiscally responsible an insult? Those who look for insult will generally find it. Seems like there might be better things to find offensive than a couple of low-level South Carolina bureaucratic buffoons. They certainly don’t seem worthy of outrage.

I’m sure someone will be outraged that I don’t share the outrage. Sorry, I save my outrage for judicial corruption, police brutality, unambiguous and abject acts of prejudice and bigotry, overt dishonesty. I’m not even outraged at people who are inappropriately outraged.

Merwin and Ulmer displayed, at best, simple stupidity. Or maybe that’s “simpleton” stupidity.

Joe Wilson—are the butt of recent political jokes is no laughing matter in South Carolina, where memories of the fight over flying the Confederate flag are still scaring off business and tourism. The firestorm around Sanford has paralyzed state government, and citizens of all stripes worry that one of the worst economic situations in the US is going to get uglier.

“It’s almost like the backwater of a swamp,” one Democrat tells the Los Angeles Times. “Everything’s sitting there, nothing’s circulating and the only thing moving is the mosquitoes.” Adds a businessman: “If you’re in competition and they say they’re not coming because of Sanford or the flag, that gets told. Two GOP county chairs in South Carolina today apologized for a weekend op-ed in which they praised Sen. Jim DeMint by invoking the stereotype of a Jew “watching our nation’s pennies.” James Ulmer wrote that he “meant absolutely nothing derogatory” by the essay. “I quoted a statement which I have heard many times in my life, truly in admiration for a method of bettering one’s lot in life,” notes Salon.

“I sincerely apologize for this great error. If I had quoted that great man from Pennsylvania, Ben Franklin, using his, ‘A penny saved is a penny earned,’ I doubt I would be writing this note.” His co-author released a separate apology. Last week, State Senator Bakari Sellars wrote in The State that United States Senator Jim DeMint, R-S.C., had failed to do enough to get federal funding for the state. On Sunday, a couple of South Carolina Country Republican Chairmen defended DeMint in a joint letter to a local newspaper where they resorted to the stereotype of penny-pinching Jews to make their point.

In their response, published in The Times and Democrat, Bamberg County GOP Chairman Edwin Merwin and Orangeburg County GOP Chairman James Ulmer offered the following logic:

“There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves,” Ulmer and Merwin wrote in their letter. “By not using earmarks to fund projects for South Carolina and instead using actual bills, DeMint is watching our nation’s pennies and trying to preserve our country’s wealth and our economy’s viability to give all an opportunity to succeed.”

Last week I co-authored a letter to the editor which focused on the vital importance of reining in the unsustainable and excessive federal government spending which is going on currently in Washington, D.C. In one of the paragraphs which I wrote, I quoted a statement which I have heard many times in my life, truly in admiration for a method of bettering one’s lot in life.

I admit that perception is indeed reality to many and that I could have certainly worded that sentence much better. I sincerely apologize for this great error. If I had quoted that great man from Pennsylvania, Ben Franklin, using his, “A penny saved is a penny earned,” I doubt I would be writing this note.

EM Ch. 3 THE CALL (Abject Monuments)

This week I come closer to understanding the outcome of my monument! Finally! The assignments, given to us by Ulmer this week to find our Call to arms has given me a clear(er) direction.

“Electronic and Soviet constructivist monumentality share an interest in appropriating the memorial genre for the purposes of mass education, collective identity formation, and liberation (however that is understood) by combining pure creative process with utilitarian concerns.” (Ulmer, 80)

So, in a very reduced nutshell, as egents of the EmerAgency, we are being asked to make “Monuments by the people,” for the people, not unlike the famous line of clothing, FUBU.

As I expressed in my last project, I am looking to amplify our awareness of the processes of things in lieu of our more habitual relationship with the end goal or object, or form. This stems from a fairly serious crises in the spatial design discipline, increasingly anxious about becoming irrelevant, in our electrate epoch.

So, I would like to use this project as an opportunity to bring some emphasis of what we do onto the development of cultural behaviors, consumptive patterns, and processes, as a way to suggest that architecture might have a place in the production of culture – in the process of experiencing and consuming, than simply on the form which contains the event.

In the last post, I proposed the question, “What is the abject found behind the Ideal Clemson University?” initially to begin my investigation. I concluded with, the question, “Can the value of the process be or become as desired as the event? Might they at least become more integrated?”

Verlässliche Partner braucht der Orientierungsplan.

Dies war das Ergebnis der Veranstaltung und anschließenden Podiumsdiskussion über die Qualität in der Arbeit der Kindertageseinrichtungen am 2.Okt. 09 zu der  „Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen” Fr. Fritsch und Fr. Ulmer vom KITA – Bündnis Baden Württemberg als Experten geladen hatten. Geladen waren auch Agnes Christner vom Städtetag, Christiane Dürr vom Gemeindetage- die krankheitsbedingt absagen musste- Rudolf Vogt vom KVJS, Peer Gimsch vom Landeselternrat, Prof.Ludwig Liegle vom Institut f. Erziehungswissenschaften, Tübingen und Norbert Hocke von der GEW Berlin.

Außerdem waren eine Menge ErzieherInnen und andere Gäste der Einladung nach Stuttgart in den Landtag gefolgt, saßen im Publikum und verfolgten mit Spannung den Verlauf der Veranstaltung. Unter dem Thema Orientierungsplan ja – Orientierungsplan nein, eröffnete Brigitte Lösch, MdL und familienpolitische Sprecherin der Grünen die Veranstaltung.

Mit ihren Grußworten umriss die familienpolitische Sprecherin der „Bündnis 90 Grünen“ zunächst die aktuelle Situation in den Kindertageseinrichtungen des Landes und verschaffte mit kurzen Worten den anwesenden Zuhörern einen Überblick, in welchem Ausmaß sich weiter die Rahmenbedingungen seit der Implementierung des Orientierungsplanes verschlechtert haben. Sie wies mit klaren Worten, im Laufe der Veranstaltung mehrfach darauf hin dies dürfe keinesfalls auf dem Rücken der „Kleinen“ ausgetragen werden.

Im Anschluss sprach Prof. Dr. Ludwig Liegle vom Institut für Erziehungswissenschaften aus Tübingen über die Thematik Bildung in der Kita braucht gute Rahmenbedingungen und muss entwickelt werden. In seinen Ausführungen kam immer wieder klar zum Ausdruck es missfalle ihm wie die verantwortlichen Politiker mit den ErzieherInnen umgehen. Mit welcher geringen Wertschätzung diesem Berufsstand, welcher hervorragende Arbeit, Leistung, hohe Motivation und Verantwortung für die Kleinsten unserer Gesellschaft zeige, Gegenübergetreten werde.
Norbert Hocke, GEW berichtete im Anschluss über die zwei Seiten der Medaille „Qualität und Orientierungsplan“. Es stehe der steigenden Qualität und Verantwortung, die niedrige Entlohnung gegenüber.
In seinen Ausführungen sprach er über die Tarifabschlüsse im öffentlichen Dienst dem TVÖD in den letzten Jahren und dass mit dem neuen Tarifabschluss vom Sommer, zu mindest in der Hinsicht ein Durchbruch zu verzeichnen sei, dass für diese Berufsgruppe eine eigene Tarifgruppe entstanden sei. Er erwähnte auch, dass das Land derzeit lediglich 3,3 % des Gesamthaushaltes für Bildung ausgibt.

Laut eines Presseberichtes der „Stuttgarter Zeitung“ vom 10.Oktober 09, müsse die derzeitige Kindergartenförderung von 386 Millionen auf mindestens 650 Millionen Euro aufgestockt werden, um einen Teil der geforderten Verbesserungen in den rund 7.800 Kindertagesstätten und -gärten mit 434.000 Plätzen verbessern zu können.
Für Städte, Kommunen und Gemeinde, die sich grundsätzlich für die Verbesserung der Rahmenbedingungen aussprechen, mache es die derzeitige wirtschaftliche Lage nicht einfach. Die immer steigenden Aufträge, Verordnungen und Gesetze die Bund und Land ihnen zuweise, stelle sie vor unlösbare Probleme angesichts leerer Kassen, wie Fr. Christner vom Städtetag ausführte.

Die anschließende Diskussion zwischen den Experten wurde von Fr. Lösch moderiert und das Publikum konnte im Anschluss dazu Fragen stellen und Meinungsbilder abgeben.
Das KITA – Bündnis Baden Württemberg vertreten durch Fr. Fritsch und Fr. Ulmer stellte im Laufe der Diskussionsrunde etliche Details auf den Prüfstand. So erläuterte Fr. Fritsch aus einem erarbeiteten Positionspapier die umfassenden Aufgabenbereiche von ErzieherInnen / Leiterinnen und stellte dem gegenüber die Vorbereitungszeiten und Zeiten mit den Kindern.

Klares Votum, dass die derzeitigen Rahmenbedingungen – die im Übrigen seit 1970 nicht mehr verändert wurden, die Anforderungen dagegen kontinuierlich ansteigen – schon lange nicht mehr ausreichen, um eine fundierte pädagogische Arbeit in den Einrichtungen leisten zu können. Auch auf Gegenargumente aus dem Publikum konnte mit fachlicher Argumentation eingegangen werden. So wurde beispielsweise eingeworfen, die Gruppen seien nicht zu jedem Zeitpunkt des Jahres voll. Die klaren Ausführungen und Beispiele seitens Fr. Ulmer gaben darüber Auskunft, das mit den Veränderung der Öffnungszeiten, Profilen und Aufgaben der Einrichtungen, (Ferienbetreuung, längere Öffnungszeiten, U3, Kooperation, QHB, ESU, Sprachförderung, Elterngespräche…..) und dem üblichen Alltagsaufgaben, die Anforderungen stark gestiegen seien und diese zudem in der gleichen Zeit bewältigt werden müssen. Zeit mit den Kindern bleibt da kaum noch, obwohl dies dringend notwendig sei, denn auch hier sind die gesellschaftlichen Anforderungen an Familien stark gestiegen.

Das Publikum und die Ausführungen von Peer Giemsch, Wolfgang G. Wettach und Jürgen Zimmermann vom Landeselternrat unterstützten beide Fachfrauen mit viel Zustimmung und zeigte somit klar, welche Forderungen von Seiten der ErzieherInnen und Eltern gestellt werden. Letztlich war die unmissverständliche Botschaft dieser Veranstaltung, dass es starke Partner auf allen Seiten braucht, um der Landesregierung klar zu machen, dass sie hier in der Verantwortung steht und die Betreffenden vor Ort nicht bereit sind, sie aus dieser Verantwortung zu entlassen. Erstmals stehen ErzieherInnen, LER, Kommunen, Städte, Gemeinden, Landesverbände, Experten und zahlreiche Politiker auf einer Seite. Dies sollte den Verantwortlichen zu denken geben.

Zudem haben sich ErzieherInnen organisiert und im KITA-Bündnis Baden Württemberg eine Plattform der politischen Vertretung für ihrer Forderungen gefunden, mit der man rechnen muss. Mit Ausflüchten und Kompromissen werden sich die Verantwortlichen hier nicht aus der Affäre ziehen können. Wir erwarten einen Stufenplan, die Verbesserung der Rahmenbedingungen vor Ort, und nicht das Opfern des Orientierungsplans zu Gunsten des Ausbaus der Krippenplätze. Qualität muss immer mit der Quantität steigen. Sonst muss die Regierung ihre Rechnung ohne uns auf machen.

Yes.  I know.  Slightly suspicious that suddenly my reading responses show up right before the due date.  Oh well.  I’ve never been a fan of reading responses but I understand they are a necessary evil for any English course.  Here we go with the major ones:

The collective Ulmer: The idea of a mystory seems almost redundant to me in the time of social networking sites.  Maybe I’m missing the point, but if the idea is that everything we do points to who we are, then shouldn’t our various pages all create various identities?  My myspace from a million years ago is still active, before that I had a page on a site called Bolt, which was way before its time.  The switch from myspace to facebook chronicles another transition in my life just as my current use of Twitter and Linkedin mark another change.  Viewing these pages chronologically (most of them are still active.  It’s true, nothing on the internet ever dies!) would give an outsider a telling view of my life.  Everything from what handles I picked, to the quotes in my “about me” sections, to the pictures I choose to show and what I post on people’s walls.  Don’t these all create a mystory?

McLuhen: The medium is the message has interesting connotations to me.  Before the advent of much of today’s technology, there seems to have been little choice in the matter of medium.  You wrote, or you were an artist.  I would argue that the invention of the typewriter maybe where things start to get fuzzy.  Suddenly there is a conscious decision involved: long hand or typed?  Add radio, television, internet and your lines become even more blurred.  Now the choice of writing something, or physically drawing it, not on a tablet computer but actually putting pencil to paper says something about you.  Your choice of whether to blog, tweet, or update indicates the tone. If I want a select group of people to know what I’m thinking I tweet.  I know who gets my updates on their phone and sometimes I want to reach just them.  By extension, it updates my Facebook status.  Sometimes if it is a general feeling, I’ll just update, people will see it when they see it.  If I’m really fired up, time to log in to the blog.

Bush: I really enjoyed “As We May Think”.  I thought it was really interesting how he postulated all of these modern technologies, but with out any idea of the microchip, how all of them were a little…off.  It makes me wonder about all the things we hypothesize now may be changed by something we haven’t even thought of yet.  It also makes me think of all the technologies we skip over.  My grandmother was always fascinated with the idea of video phones.  For some reason she just thought this was going to be the hallmark of the future.  While with in her lifetime video phones were created, they never had much popularity.  Now we Skype.  I always wonder what she would have thought about that.

The greatest thing about this article is the idea that our lives have a theme.  I loved the story about Albert Einstein and the idea of our lives possessing and rotating around a single image.

What would my image be?

Obviously, I would want to do somthing about music and my writing.  I feel as if those two intertwine themselves.  Music inspired me to write poetry, and eventually my own lyrics.  I feel like my whole life is one big soundtrack, and I can look back through tapes and then CDs to track and timeline my life.  I remember my first tape, a Beatles tape that I would listen to in the night through thunderstorms when I would get scared as a child.

So would a tape be my image?  I don’t think so.  A tape doesn’t fit in the long run.  I don’t listen to tapes anymore.  haha.  And a tape, such as a Beatles tape, has a sense of permanance to it.  A mixtape seems more mutable.  You can record on a mixtape.  You can change it.  A mixtape represents a time period and an era and helps you find yourself through the lyrics of others and their inspiration.

So the mixtape.

That screams Say Anything to me.  And Butch Walker.  And maybe my life is one big series of mixtapes.  I take these songs from every one else and I mix them up into a collage of images and words and make my own songs and beg them to make sense of everything.

So maybe my life is a mixtape.  And maybe that’s my image.

It only took me two hours to read chapter one of Ulmer’s “Internet Invention.” Only two.  One might think that 26 pages should take less time to read, but for the anelectrate individual such as myself, I had a hard time understanding and absorbing Ulmer’s words. I found the Einstein example to be very helpful as he explained themata, but still am wary to come up with my own definition. Holton says that themata are ‘gut assumptions’ and relates those assumptions to scientists and their thoughts on the universe. My gut assumptions, which do not seem nearly as profound as those of scientists, stem from childhood as Holton says that these presuppositions remained stable over the years. One thing from my childhood that I will forever carry with me is my disbelief in marriage. I have been the product of a failed marriage and witnessed two others between my mother and father (that doesn’t take into account relatives and family friends divorcing). I’m not sure if this is an equivalent to Einstein’s compass, but this is what sticks out most in my mind. I’ve always had a passion for animals, though. I have routinely volunteered with animal shelters and now work with a local rescue group. As a matter of fact, community service is my driving force. I am a firm believer in giving back to the community you live in. I suppose I need to find the driving force that has molded me throughout my lifetime, which is where mystory comes into place, I believe.

I continued reading the chapter, slowly but surely, and ventured into the popcycle concept. Again, I thought back to my stable disbelief in marriage and my passion to serve others. Sounds like a huge contradiction, but believe me, you can be passionate about helping others and not about stable relationships (who knows, maybe this exercise will help to dissolve my negativity of marriage). 

Ulmer also went to discuss the culture of one’s career field. As a public relations major, the culture in this industry is building relationships. Similar to tending crops as he suggests, performing good public relations is a vigilant process. You must take care of your client and constantly communicate to effectively please him/her. Such is the process of gardening. The plants must constantly be watered and cared for. If either the plant or client is neglected, what you have once invested time in disappears. A client will leave his/her PR practitioner if he/she is not completely satisfied and doesn’t feel like the practitioner is devoting enough time to him.

After reading, I was determined to get a solid grasp on electracy. Ulmer makes a great analogy of how literacy is to print what elecracy is to digital and new media. Our society is constantly changing trying to keep up with who tweeted what and where Sally went out last night. Social networking sites such as facebook, myspace, and twitter allow friends to remain constantly up to date with one another. As a child of early technology (I never knew life without the internet — or at least until my teenage years when it became prevalent and necessary for my social life), it does not surprise me of the new ways people are communicating, learning, and most importantly living. We rely so heavily on the devices that allow us to easily access the internet. We have also become dependent on the search engine and computers. Think when was the last time you looked up reference material at the library from a real book using the card catalog system. Now, it is so easy for us to access that material from our living room. A click away and you are hooked up to a library’s database scrolling across the monitor as you research. So much of our lifestyle has evolved via technology and it has only just begun.

- Why is there no love for Ian White? He improves every year, can play forward and D, stepped up for Kaberle when he was hurt, and has a great little Wendel Clark stache? Where is the love Mike? Where the fuck is it?

- Dr. Ulmer, regarding Gustavsson, can you explain how a heart ‘ablation’ requires surgery in the groin? Does Gustavsson have a super wide urethra or what?

I was recently rereading sections from Richard Lanham’s Analyzing Prose as I am prepping for a course I’m teaching this fall titled Writing for Digital Environments, and I had forgot how much I enjoyed the book and particularly the epilogue, “What’s next for text?”, which he added in the 2nd edition of the book.  Granted it has some of the thinking from his Economics of Attention book, but he does a very nice job of setting up many threads or issues that persist in multimedia scholarship and/or its relation to text (as in the legacy of the printed word).  He tells us, in no particular order, that electronic texts allow the author to speak from the margins (236), that we readers of texts and/or consumers of information “crave the rich signal” (237), and that the fixity of print will always remain a choice, but we should acknowledge (more explicitly than we have) that fixity is, in fact, a choice and not the de facto position of text (236).

He also writes, “We always have wanted to mix word and image, abstract and behavioral space [. . . . and we] have always wanted to put words in motion, dramatize their relationships to one another” (237).  This desire, it seems, comes from our existence as beings in a multimodal and multimediated world.  Words alone, while of value, cannot do what multiple media together can do.  It is the same with human-to-human (face-to-face) interaction, where the combination of words, voice, gestures, setting, context, situation, and so on are all at play.  To reduce ourselves to a single mode of expression is, in a certain way, a reduction of self, a reduction of capacity, a reduction of human possibility.

One of my other favorite lines, which reminds me of Ulmer’s work, is when Lanham writes, “digital prose works in, around, over, and through images” (237).  Prose, aside from its existence as an image as well, works in image reasoning and/or Ulmer’s “image reasoneon” (which he builds/borrows from Walter Benjamin).  There is not only something visual about prose (or text in general) , but there is an image logic that can be found moving amid the at/through oscillation Lanham speaks of.  Ulmer picks this up with Derrida working at the level of the gram, but also with this notion of “image reasoneon” where we might think of the importance of neon words in advertisement and, more generally, our larger consumerist culture.

The matte-shot—a sketch of the bridge is visually meshed with a studio tank shot—reeks of artificiality and reality, reminding us that the real Seine is an “engineered river,” a conjoining of Nature and man-made construction. Much else also contributes to the confusion/conflation of reality and nonreality, the representation of reality and the thing being represented, subjectivity and objectivity. Ultimately, we are looking at a point in “Paris” that coincides with the killer’s trapped and tormented mind, in which projectively we find ourselves also drowning; the recurrent shot is both exterior and interior, outside and psychological. Like the serial killer of children in Fritz Lang’s M (1931), Bluebeard cannot help himself. He is driven to kill by impulses and forces beyond his control.
     Edgar G. Ulmer, the brilliant director of Bluebeard, and Eugen Schüfftan, who also contributed (along with Jockey Arthur Feindel) to the film’s eerie black-and-white cinematography, collaborated on the film’s production design, evoking a nineteenth-century Paris of their own mind as well as Bluebeard’s, where the “outdoors” of a puppeteer’s nighttime show plainly is studio-bound, contributing to the overall effect and surrounding us with the killer’s conscious mind and unconscious. “Poverty row” director Ulmer makes his meager means artistically count and thus triumphs over Hollywood.
     Soft-spoken John Carradine, replacing Boris Karloff, Ulmer’s first choice for the role a decade earlier, is memorable as Gaston Morrell, the sensitive painter-puppeteer who just cannot stop killing, and who for survival’s sake must even assault Lucille, his beloved whom he had hoped would release him from his mental curse.

Es gibt auch die Möglichkeit vom Recht recht sonderbar ausgeschlossen zu werden -
die Agentur für Arbeit erklärt einen für verrückt:
“seelische Störung” und “schwere chronifizierte psychiatrische Erkrankung” -
“juhu, endlich keine Bewerbungen schreiben; jetzt glücklicher Rentner!” – weit gefehlt:
nun kann der Betroffene, geht er Jemandem auf die Nerven, OHNE gerichtliche Verurteilung in eine geschlossene Anstalt abgeschoben/weggesperrt werden, da ihm dem Durchgeknallten keiner glaubt, wird ihm auch nicht geholfen.

Wo ist der Rechtsstaat Herr Vetter?

Gibt es einen Unterschied zu weggeschlossen und weggeschlossen?
Wie kann es angehn, dass ein Herumirrender ohne von einem Richter angeschaut zu werden, für mehrere Jahre verschwunden werden kann, nur weil ihn die örtliche Polizei zu stressig findet?
Bei anderen kommt es meist nicht zu einem derart langen Aufenthalt, da es noch Angehörige gibt – wenn sie ihn nicht aufgegeben haben!

Es kann der “Herumirrende” auch “erfunden” werden, denn wer kennt ihn schon – den Betroffenen?
Vielleicht ist er überhaupt nicht ein Wirrer/Bescheuerter, eventuell sagt er zu einigen Verbrechen die Wahrheit UND es gibt gewisse Verbrecher, welche über ihre Vergangenheit lieber nichts in der Zeitung stehend sehen wollen, da sie sich ihr Leben inzwischen ruhig eingerichtet haben.

Also bildet Banden! dann gibt es (vielleicht) Jemanden der sich (vielleicht) um dich kümmert, wenn dich schon deine Familie aufgegeben hat!
Es gibt meines Wissens keine/n Person/Firma/Verein, welche/r Personen selbstlos hilft, dass sie weder in eine psychiatrische Anstalt weggesperrt, geschweige vor den dortigen “Medikamenten” bewahrt würden!

März 1984 ging es auch ganz ruhig von statten:

With the project coming to a close, I’ve been trying to decide which of these design prototypes I will declare my disaster’s “official” logo…as if confined to the age of print, and cost of publication were an issue.

The design below is a product of my being torn between several of prototypes, wanting to include elements from each.  Then came the realization: the image is indefinit(iv)e …

The beauty (or sublimity?) of electracy, as Professor Ulmer reminded me in an email response, is that we–the “author” of the image–don’t necessarily need to nominate a single, official logo…the others of the internet will nominate on our behalf; all of our images “circulate without us”:
