Clearly, strategic planning is no panacea. Strategic planning is simply a set of concepts, procedures, and tools designed to help leaders, managers, and planners think and act strategically. Used in wise and skillful ways by a “coalition of the willing,” strategic planning can help organizations focus on producing effective decisions and actions that further the organization’s mission, meet in mandates, and satisfy key stakeholders. But strategic planning is not a substitute for strategic thinking and acting. Only caring and committed people can do that. And when used thoughtlessly, strategic planning can actually drive out precisely the kind of strategic thought and action it is supposed to promote.

Furthermore, strategic planning is not a substitute for leadership. There is simply no substitute for leadership when it comes to using strategic planning to enhance organizational performance. At least some key decision makers and process champions must be committed to the strategic planning process, or any attempts to use it are bound to fail.

In addition, strategic planning is not synonymous with creating an organizational strategy. Organizational strategies have numerous sources, both planned and unplanned. Strategic planning is likely to result in statement of organizational intentions, but what is realized in practice will be some combination of what is intended and what emerges along the way. Strategic planning can help organizations develop and implement effective strategies, but they should also remain open to unforeseen opportunities. Too much attention to strategic planning and excessive reverence for strategic plans can build organizations to other unplanned and unexpected—yet incredibly useful—sources of information, insight, and action.

The discipline necessary for strategic planning can be of two sorts. The first harkens back to Latin root of the word “discipline,” emphasizing instruction, training, education, and learning. The ultimate goal of strategic planning should not be a rigid adherence to a particular process or an instance on the production of plans. Instead, strategic planning should promote wise strategic thought and action on behalf of an organization and its key stakeholders. What steps to follow, in what sequence, and whether or not to prepare formal plans are subsidiary concerns.

They say that success is contagious. If that’s the case, then Jojah is certainly in for one of its most successful seasons of all time.

Since 2003 Jojah has only missed Nationals once. It is safe to say that the Bulldogs have made themselves a staple of the competitive Ultimate scene. However, apart from their trip to the semifinals on the back of future World Champion Dylan Tunnell, Jojah has not had much in the way of success once Nationals has rolled around. Last season was no exception as Georgia, the No. 2 team from the Atlantic Coast, won one game in Columbus and finished tied for 19th in the nation.

“For all our players that were on the team last year,” Jojah captains Peter Dempsey and Rob Herrig wrote us in an e-mail. “(That) was an embarrassment.”

However, Jojah has been surrounded by success this offseason, as two of men who play pivotal roles on the team, fifth year captain Dempsey and coach AJ Tiarsmith helped lead Atlanta’s Chain Lightning to its first UPA Club Championship.

Tiarsmith plays the role of coach and Herrig and Dempsey believe that his role on the team cannot be understated.

“We believe that we have the best coach in college Ultimate in AJ Tiarsmith,” Herrig and Dempsey wrote us in an e-mail. “His knowledge of the game is incredible and he is great at indentifying what we need to work on, both as individuals and as a team. He inspires a passion for the game and, at the same time, he helps keep us loose and having fun.”

No one benefited from that knowledge in the last year than Dempsey. A staple of Jojah’s season last year was to see Tiarsmith and Dempsey consistently discussing strategy between points and games. On top of that, Dempsey spent the club season gaining supplemental coaching from Tiarsmith and the rest of Chain’s experienced roster and it showed on the sport’s largest stage.

Dempsey’s near Callahan will most likely be a familiar sight for Jojah’s opponents this season as he and fifth year senior Taylor Nilan, who was the last player to not make Chain’s roster this season, anchor the Bulldogs’ aggressive defensive-line.

On the the other side of the disc, the Bulldog ties run as thick as blood. It’s tough to beat the chemistry that Jojah’s best cutter and Jojah’s best handler have. Rob Herrig, who Dempsey refers to as “the quarterback of the UGA offense,” works as one with his younger brother, Charlie. The Herrig brothers are a force to be reckoned with and with Georgia’s offensive style, it’s not a choice of how to defend them, it’s a choice of how you want to be beat.

“We run our defenders tired all over the field,” Dempsey and Herrig wrote. “On the open side, we get open consistently. In the red zone, we break the mark and play possession. Our cutters are extremely athletic, they are quick and fast but they will throw the huck if the deep pass is open.”

To say that Georgia has a complete team is a bit of an understatement. 14 members of Jojah’s roster have been playing together for at least two years and the Bulldogs are ready to prove that this year is their year.

“We expect to win every game that we play in,” Dempsey and Herrig wrote. “We’ve got the talent and we put in the work. If we stay focused, we know that we can beat anyone we play.”

Winning their home tournament for the first time in its history would certainly be a nice place to start.

I don’t like being told by a website that I should still be resting today. Even though it’s probably right. Today after work I was thinking of walking home. Saves a token, plus I got out earlier than I have been (I was trying to build comp time… no point this week because of Thanksgiving), so I felt weird being free at 5pm. I listened to the website advice and took the trolley. It’s only a three mile walk, practically nothing. Maybe after my next marathon I will be more rebellious. Right now I think it’s wise to listen to Hal, he has run many more marathons than me.

Today I am less sore than yesterday, which is a surprise. I associate the second day after a hard workout with more soreness if day one involved doing nothing. Today all I did was walk around the office, and I might go grocery shopping (don’t ask how sad my fridge looks). My left knee is more prone to hyperextension than it should be (but that is mostly from before, just slightly worse now that my muscles are more tired), and my quads still don’t like stairs. But other than that, I feel fine. Fine and anxious to do something.

I can’t even bike to work tomorrow. Another day of rest is due. Biking is practically nothing…

Just a note about race day nutrition: for breakfast I  had two eggs, toast, and strawberries. I woke up at 4:30am and finished eating before 5. Consumed 3 Gu’s (mile 10, 15, and 19ish), drank a good amount of Gatorade and water. Didn’t feel hungry except before getting Gu 3. Didn’t feel the least bit sick while running until the end when I started to sprint too fast, but that was just temporary. Post race was chicken broth, frozen apple juice, more Gatorade, a banana, and peanuts. Then the pizza and beer and water at my house.

My dad asked if I was consuming tons yesterday (Monday) to make up for the lost calories. The race took about 3000 calories. I did eat more, but it was partly out of boredom because my legs prevented me from leaving the house, and partly because I felt obligated to eat. Not that I didn’t enjoy eating every bite =) Thai food for supper, yumm!

Final note: Not being able to exercise is giving me cabin fever. I can’t stop thinking about the new training plan, and about races I might run. I need to remember that winter is the off-season of life. I don’t think I had a free weekend last summer. Can’t go scheduling races when I might want to play Ultimate!!

Don’t opt for Windows 7 Ultimate just because you like the sound of ‘Ultimate.’

Windows 7 Ultimate is intentionally misnamed by Microsoft to ultimately trap all of those that feel that they must have the BEST. There is nothing wrong with always wanting the BEST. But, in the case of Windows 7 Ultimate is unlikely to be the BEST option for YOU … unless you are bona fide road-warrior.

Do not rely on ANY OTHER chart. Whatever you do don’t listen to ‘YOUR PC GUY’ (and why do we have such a shortage of PC Gals?) who tells you that you should go with the ULTIMATE … since it only costs $20 more than ‘Professional.’

Check MSFT’s CHART. Note you only get two, and only two, features in ‘Ultimate’ above what you get with ‘Professional.’

Those two are:

1. BitLocker. That is on-the-fly data encryption. MSFT sells it as feature against hackers. Don’t buy that. That is disingenuous of MSFT, to say the least. We have Windows Defender that is supposed to protect us from Hackers? So, why do you also need BitLocker. Yes, BitLocker is invaluable if you have a laptop and are a road warrior. If the laptop is stolen or lost, you data will be safe. For that you need BitLocker. In my book, and I have written a few, that is the ONLY reason to have BitLocker. To protect data on ‘traveling’ laptops. Don’t ever think of BitLocker on a desktop. Just use Windows Defender and Avast.
   
2. 35 Language Support. That is very nice, but do YOU really need that on YOUR PC. Like how many languages do you use on you PC? Just good and bad English. That is two.
   

The irony is that I think BitLocker can actually have a performance impact on your PC. Don’t know that for a fact. Just a guess. I do know some about encryption, but I haven’t bothered to look up the details of BitLocker.

My goal is to just to give YOU a HEADS UP that Windows 7 Ultimate is not the Ultimate Windows 7 experience that you may have been hoping for. So don’t spend the extra without checking out what you are not getting to get.

Yes, I know that Windows 7 Ultimate is freely available, in pirated form. If you are going to use pirated software then this really will the ultimate kick for you. Go for it. The worst it can do is slow you PC down, but what the heck. You got THE ULTIMATE for nothing.

I’m having a lazy day playing Call of Duty 4 online, eating food, blogging and editing. I made a new Playstation Account, new online username is Timn96-  (Yes, with the hyphen at the end). I got fed up with my old one “breaddah” I suck at gaming, but it’s fun.

The weather is extremely bland today. This is the type of weather I hate. Completely solid grey sky. I’d prefer it if it was a huge thunderstorm. I don’t mind cold weather, it’s nice sometimes if it’s really cold but really sunny. I don’t really have anything against winter.

Motorhead tomorrow (25th Nov 09), I can’t wait. I won’t be ill tomorrow, trust me. I’m in school tomorrow, leave the house at 7:45am, won’t get back until 1am. Then I have two random days off on Thursday and Friday for some unknown reason (thanks school!) So I’ll have Thursday to be lazy and recover, then I’m supposed to be going and seeing the film 2012 with my friends on Friday o_o

Life is tough when you are one of the best. Expectations run rampant and you have a standard to live up to. Such is life when you are a Wisconsin Hodag.

Over the last ten years, the Hodag name and symbol have become synonymous with elite level college ultimate. It has been ten years since the Hodags missed a trip to UPA Nationals. The Hodags boast a Callahan winner among their alumni, a group who are as renowned for their talent as they are for their dedication to the ideal that is Wisconsin Ultimate.

However, along with all the fame and all the glory comes a great burden as well. The 2009 UPA series was the first time in four years that Wisconsin did not find itself among the semifinalists at College Nationals. In fact, earlier in the season, at Trouble in Vegas, the Hodags went winless for a day of Ultimate. A feat that, according to the Hodags has never been  seen before in Hodag Ultimate history, aside from winless Sundays at college Nationals.

While for most programs, a replica of Wisconsin’s 2009 season would be the season to end all seasons, the Hodags were certainly not overwhelmingly pleased with their results. This left many folks asking the question, “What is wrong with Wisconsin ultimate?” and “What does this mean for next year?” As a large group of the Hodags’ core was leaving for the great beyond of post graduation. Including Callahan nominee Jim Foster.

Those questions have circulated just about everywhere except for inside of the Hodag huddle, as current captain Jake Smart simply states that UW’s expectations have not changed in the least bit.

“We expect to be playing on Sunday at Nationals,” Smart wrote us in an e-mail.

Leading the way to that goal will be Smart, a consistent defensive player for the Hodags and senior handler Evan Klane, the anchor of the Hodag offense. Both players are among a group of Hodags that gained solid experience with the Madison Club team this summer. Madison Club won the Central Region during the UPA’s club series. During our interview with Smart, he named seven Hodags that would be the face of the team this season, five of those seven spent this club season playing with Madison Club.

One member of the team that also has connections with Madison Club is Hector Valdivia, a player who has gained repute in the Ultimate scene for both his skills and knowledge of the game. An alumnus of Wisconsin, Valdivia has jumped on board at UW as the coach of the Open team.

“He coaches via mental exercises, mini games and heuristic principles,” Smart wrote. “(He) provides sideline presence and strategy at tournaments.”

However, Valdivia’s presence won’t change much when it comes to the way Wisconsin appears on the field. The Hodags plan to continue their tendency towards hard play and threatening the endzone on every throw.

“We huck it a lot,” Smart wrote. “Our receivers are athletic and are expected to make plays deep if the disc is at all catchable.”

The key to Wisconsin’s offense is its team cohesiveness. With every dump and every swing, each player is expected to know where his handler is looking and how the wants to put the throw where he is looking. Wisconsin’s young, relatively speaking, team is well on its way to reaching that cohesiveness.

“We have a lot of sophomores (7) and juniors (3),” Smart wrote. “These are guys who are on the cusp of becoming great and effective players. They are also just becoming comfortable with each other. We are looking for these guys to jump up to the next level and develop chemistry.”

That chemistry will be tested at this year’s CCC as the young Hodags will be asked replicate something that their more experienced predecessors have accomplished many times. Win the most prestigious fall tournament around. The untested Wisconsin players are living up to their alumni who have won CCC the last four years.

I’m going to post some random Thai boxing and K1 style matches that I filmed from Austria.  These matches have no real significance to me, I just filmed them to further my education and also my students’ education.  Observe the pace and footwork.  Pretty good stuff.  Enjoy!  Jd

Got the Fuel, the Fire, the Hot Desire

Boone, NC — Don’t say you’ve seen it all until you have been to an Ultimate Frisbee tournament.

Free to Lay, Elon University’s Club Ultimate Frisbee team went westward last weekend for the Blue Ridge Blowout 2009.

Though this year’s team is young, their performance was not one to reflect having lost ten players from the previous season. The moment their cleats touched the lush fields, the defending BRB champions prepared to exploit and demoralize, as the collectively said to themselves, “No guts, no glory.”

Playing 6 games total over the weekend, the girls were nothing short of exhausted after battling it out against the CofC Hobos, App St. Nomads, the Alumnads, UNCG G-Spot, NC State Jaga, and the Virginia Tech Burnettes. With 4 solid wins and a Clemson forfeit, F2L held strong at 5-2 for the weekend.

When told of the team’s successful weekend, former F2L captain Katy Branston said, “it’s clear that they’ve still got the fuel, the fire, and the hot desire. I’m also proud of Taylor Swift, because she’s just a great role model.”

This was the second tournament for Elon’s rookies. For freshman Kelli Kinane, an exchange student from Sweden, Ultimate Frisbee was a way to get involved and make some American friends. Or at least that’s what we think she said. When asked about her experience with the sport, Kelli stated, “Det är en svår sport, eftersom jag inte talar engelska. Folk skriker åt mig hela tiden att “Layout” och jag förstår inte. Dessutom har jag lärt mig att det inte är okej i Amerika att göra ansikten i fotografier av mina vänner. Här är jag mycket oförskämd.”*

According to current captain Lauren Krizay, the most shocking moment of the tournament was when a rogue cow ran onto the field during a game against UNCG and began to play with the team. “It was the most udderly ridiculous thing I’ve seen in a long time. It just came out there, picked up the disc with her hooves and started playing, udders and all. And then she did flips. I don’t know dude, it was just crazy.” Luckily, F2L’s coach is a representative from the Dairy Farmers of America and was able to corral the bodacious bovine – but not before G-Spotter Caitie B. took an opportunity to make the statement of the game. Noting a striking resemblance to America’s favorite condiments, Caitie B. exclaimed, “It looks like McDonalds out here and ba-da-ba-ba-ba I’m LOVIN it!.” (Sources reveal that Caitie B. later apologized to the cow, saying “Sorry for all the cow jokes this weekend. I just had to milk it for all it was worth.” What a charmer, that one.)

In addition to the best parental sidelines a team could ask for, Frank Lloyd Wright and Susan B. Anthony showed their loyal fan hood to the ladies of F2L. As usual, the ladies were excited to have such big names in their midst. Sophomore captain Caroline Walker is a good friend of FLW and SBA, and mentioned at one point that if she had to choose between running fast and having FLW & SBA on the sidelines, she would, “have to think pretty hard about that one.”

As the fall chapter of Elon Ultimate Frisbee comes to a close, one can’t help but hold onto the memories of the “quiet room” at the Super 8, speeding tickets, red hair dye and layout Ds. A nostalgic coach Kamischke said, “2010 is going to be great. We’re on a quest for eternal greatness, and we’re not stopping until we get there.” Godspeed, F2L. May the disc be with you.

Boy the day after can be rough.  The boys really did a good job with their wins yesterday so as they were partying it up in TO, I decided to do the same in Vancouver.

Our evening consisted at dining at my friend’s restaurant Azia.  If you love Asian Fusion food, you gotta come here.  It’s got tapas, Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, Mongolian and Japanese theme dishes.  A lot of the staff are Asian, so Ivano and Hector, jump on a plane!

Afterwards we hit the theaters to see 2012.  Awesome effects in this movie.  However with all of the rain we’ve been getting in Vancouver, you would think 2012 is already upon us!

The night concluded with more eating at Moxies and at the fully licensed Cafe Crepe!

Next morning I woke up with a purpose to hit the gym in an effort to reverse the damage I had caused.  As my student Julian likes to state “if you do the crime, you must do the time.”  Man I know that statement very well!

Before I had a chance to hit the gym, I got a call from Rob Kaman!  You will be very glad to hear that Rob is his usual charismatic destructive self.  He says “hi” to all of the Kombat boys and girls.

I jumped on the SkyTrain and made my way to the Gold’s Gym.  Boy it’s been a long time since I’ve been in a gym.  We actually started off Kombat Arts in the aerobics studio (just 2500 sq ft!) of a Gold’s Gym.  Boy I miss those days, and at times a small part of me wishes to be back there.  The good news is that I weighed  in at 147 lbs this morning!  Must be the facial hair!

It was great to be totally anonymous and get in about 1 1/2 hours of hard work.  My workout consisted of: skipping rope, shadowboxing, chin ups, dips, snatches into a split squat, military push presses, 1 legged stiff legged deadlifts, japanese squats, plate twists, more core training, Ys and Ts for the mid back and finally neck training.  Whew, not bad eh?

I finished up and made my way to Extreme Pita were I chilled and read more of Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now.  It’s pretty interesting; if you’ve completed the whole book, please let me know your thoughts on it.

Back at home Josip’s brother entertained us for an hour or so by bringing over his German Shepherd puppies.  They are such little terrors!

After getting nipped everywhere, Josip and I escaped our residence and headed to Earls for dinner.  The night got capped off with the movie, The Blind Side.  The movie was really moving and inspirational.  If you get a chance please check it out.  Ok guys, off to chill out by watching Heroes on my net book.  Tomorrow will be a full day of Yoga (my 1st lesson!) and back to training camp-Jd

Many more woman are now starting to wear Ugg Boots, which over the last couple of years seem to have become the must have accessory. Not only are they being worn by celebrities, such as Kate Winslet and Gwyneth Paltrow, but also by Joe Public. The reason why these boots seem to have taken the fashion world by storm is their versatility.

Originally, the only place these boots could be found was Australia, however since they made their way to the fashion scene in America the craze for these boots has just taken off. Unfortunately because an American was able to establish the trademark “Ugg Australia” you will find now that the boots actually being produced in Australia are called Sheepskin Boots rather than “Uggs”.

It does not matter whether you call them Uggs or Sheepskin boots as long as they are made from Australian Merino Sheepskin they are the same, and you will find that both makes are incredibly warm and soft during cold weather spells, but are also ideal for keeping your feet cool during warm weather as well.

It is because of their versatility and the extended choices of style, colour and boot height that have now made these such an essential part of any woman’s wardrobe. No longer do you have to stick to just buying a pair in brown or black, you can purchase a pair of Uggs in almost any colour you want. Say you want to make a statement and let people you know you are here, then how about purchasing a red pair. However, if you would like to add a bit of femininity to your outfit, then may be you should look at purchasing a pair in either lilac or pink. With the advent of the boots also being available in various lengths i.e., short, medium or long you don’t have to just wear them with jeans, you could actually wear a pair of long boots with a short skirt and a pair of opaque tights. So go on be daring and don’t stick to the norm.

So go ahead and purchase a pair of these most wanted of fashion accessories and just watch out, you may find one pair is not enough.

Congrats to my boys Lee and Jacques for winning their Thai boxing matches this weekend!  The event was hosted by Muay Thai Niagara and was attended by a lot of various Thai boxing schools.  Also congrats to our friends from Renegade Muay Thai.  Kru Eddie’s athlete did a very good job winning his match by split decision.

Jacques won his match by unanimous decision.  From what I was able to glean from all of the texts that I got, he kept getting better and better each round.  Lee gave his opponent 2 standing eight counts in the 1st round.  In the 2nd round Lee put a closure on it with a KO!  Awesome work guys!!!  You should have seen me jumping around the theater with joy!

Also thanks and congrats to all of the coaches that helped out.  Sly, Dave, Roberto, Sean and Ivano.   Like I stated before there is a lot of work that goes into the development of these athletes.  I would also like to give a heartfelt thanks to all of the Kombat students that went to support our athletes and school.

I am very proud of how all of you guys have been conducting yourselves lately.  I know that I have not really had my head screwed on right as I muddle through my life, but it is comforting to know that you guys can take care of business with or without me.  Again, the word PROUD, does not clearly define how I feel.  Thanks for win, it has made me feel a lot better.  Love you guys, be good!!! Following my last two posts about pirated copies of Windows 7, I was going to let the topic drop for a few days. But, ….

Per my daily routine, I was checking out CraigsList this morning. I came across this Ad. in the ‘Computer Services’ section in the New Hampshire CL.

The title was: “Computer reformats, to windows 7 ultimate, 30$ (manchester, nh)”.

It had an image attached and when you opened the Ad. it was ‘The XBox Guy,’ with a nice picture of a pirate … BUT with a statement that he doesn’t support or condone piracy. Just fair use.

I flagged the Ad. to CL.

He was offering to sell STOLEN goods.

Actually not sure whether he is just using that subject line to get people to look at his XBox ad.

Doesn’t matter. I know that pirated copies of Windows 7 Ultimate is available, for free, on the Web.

I know CL. People are blatant in what they advertise and sometimes even ask.

Many are stupid. Yes, CL is being policed to an extent. But, they are unlikely to have spotted this … and I am not even sure that my FLAGGING of it would result in it being taken down.

Yes, there will be folks that take up his offer. Some will NOT realize that they are receiving stolen goods. I have no gripe against those. They probably, genuinely think, that upgrading to Windows 7 must just cost $30. Good for them.

It amuses me about those that KNOWINGLY will go to this guy and ask him to install Windows 7 Ultimate on their PC for $30.

But, there are a LOT of real dumb people out there, many of whom do a lot of transactions on CL.

You are going to an acknowledged THIEF and telling them to install software on your PC.

As I said before, this guy, like all those that deal in pirated Windows 7 have already established that they have no compunctions about thieving. It is just like that saying about whoring. “Yes, we have established that you are whore, all we are now doing is negotiating on a price.”

If he is willing to steal from MSFT, he will also steal from YOU.

Think about it.

This pirating is costing YOU money.

It is just like the health care debate. The uninsured that go to ERs … end up costing those that have insurance! That is how it works. Pirated Windows 7 just makes MSFT bump up their prices on those of us that BUY their software.
