Dear Sheila:

A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the jubilee clips holding the vacuum pipes onto the inlet manifold. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the carburetor float chamber. I hope this helps.

I am so sick of these robed, self-righteous pieces of shit doing everything they can to thwart gay equality and a woman’s right to choose, while they ignore the real moral travesties taking place in their own goddamn Church.  A commission report into Dublin’s Catholic Archdiocese has found “no doubt”…let me repeat that…”NO DOUBT“…that the archdiocese and other Church authorities have a long, hideous track record of deliberately covering up the sexual abuse of children by priests between 1975 and 2004.

…the welfare of children, which should have been the first priority, was not even a factor to be considered in the early stages…Instead the focus was on the avoidance of scandal and the preservation of the good name, status and assets of the institution and of what the institution regarded as its most important members – the priests.

And, as we all know, this isn’t some isolated freak case in Dublin.  This is a systemic problem within the Catholic Church.  Children have been victimized by predators in robes within the Church, their cases covered up, lives ruined – for what?  For “the avoidance of scandal.”  For “the preservation of the good name, status and assets of the institution.”

In the meantime, these right-wing freaks within the Catholic Church have conducted a never-ending assault on gay equality here in the United States.  Just earlier this month, the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington issued an ultimatum;  the Church will actually shut down its social services for the poor within the District of Columbia if the city legalizes same-sex marriage.  These rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth zealots will actually simultaneously screw every single poor person in D.C. receiving services from the Catholic Church if marriage equality becomes a reality in Washington.  These services include services relating to homelessness, health care, and adoption.

And what about the Catholic Church’s war on women?  The Church played a key role in adding the draconian, anti-woman Stupak Amendment to the House health care bill, which threatens to effectively ban abortion for low- and middle-income women.  If the United States of America returns to the Dark Ages of back-alley abortions, the Catholic Church will be the primary reason.

All of this, while the Catholic Church has a proven record of covering up the sexual abuse of children.  All of this, while Church authorities have disregarded the safety of defenseless children in an effort to save the Church’s “good name.”

Twitter was created just in 2006 and nowadays it’s a must have for every company, who use it as a perfect tool for advertising and updating news, celebrities use it for public relations and ordinary people communicate with people all over the world but as some examples show, sometimes it may be used not in a right order.

Although I don’t have my Twitter as I don’t find any interest in sharing and following what somebody eats/thinks/does/etc., probably I was not the only one who heard that story with Miley Cyrus dramatically leaving Twitter.

Actually, I was not moved about that, but what seems more interesting is the crazy fan who decided to make up her mind. He issued an ultimatum: whether Miley comes back to Twitter or he is going to kill and cook his cat! Moreover, he created a website, where you can find the answers to FAQs, pictures, updates and even a recipe!

Of course we can not blame Twitter for people getting crazy and starting to blackmail and threaten others. But we can question how it’s operating principle makes people insanely addictive to seeking others every step of life and sharing your owns. In my opinion, it’s rapid popularity will lead just to a temporary hype, which is going to finish with the emergence of some other interactive website, although nowadays it’s usability encourages to consider it as a communication medium.

By the way, the deadline for this ultimatum is tonight, november 22, 10PM. Wonder what will happen?

I’ve had a few drinks. I don’t want to start the whole conversation again about how I should give up alcohol, or that I think I’m such a better person when I’m drunk, because common sense dictates that not to be the case. The gist of the draft I had started earlier this evening was in prose-style. About how bad my writers block is. About how unmotivated I am. You lay there pretending to sleep; we lay there both on opposite sides of the room, trying to sleep, pretending to sleep, for hours on end, biting our teeth, sucking our tongues back, chewing our cheeks with the fan whirling around us and increasing the anxious tension in the room.

When I say I love you and I never wanted to be with anyone else other than you, and that I never even so much as hazarded a glance at anyone, ANYone, why couldn’t you just believe me? If you believed me? That long scar along your arm wouldn’t exist.

Thankfully though, I died old and dead, empty from you, eyes closed, blood drained, with a flicker of a smile in my eyes, that flicker which decided to exist in that new person I now call me. If there is one thing I can hate you for,  I fucking hate you for killing me. But I fucking love that I died.

Now that the well has opened, I could write so much more.

Ladies and gentlement, it goes to show that even time cannot heal all wounds, unless you unbandange them, and give them the actual TLC they deserve. I was so hurt. I was killed. I have no regrets. A csávó annyira készül, hogy előre likvidálja Damient és Lettot is megpróbálja, de addigra fülébe jutnak a dolgok és utána már csak rohanás, bandák összefogása, és végül mégis lebombázzák a várost.

Pertempuran Surabaya berkaitan dengan pertempuran-pertempuran pemuda/arek-arek Surabaya sebelumnya guna melucuti persenjataan dari pasukan Jepang yang kalah dalam perang Pasifik. Pemerintah mendukung tindakan yang dlakukan arek-arek Surabaya dengan mempersenjatai diri dan mempertahankan kemerdekaan dari bangsa asing.

Satu rangkaian dengan kekalahan Jepang ialah datangnya pasukan sekutu (AFNEI) ke Surabaya pada tanggal 25 Oktober 1945, Brikade 49 di bawah pimpinan Brigadir Jenderal A.W.S. Mallaby. Kedatangan mereka adalah untuk melucuti senjata pasukan Jepang dan menyelamatkan para interniran  Sekutu. Untuk mengatasi kecurigaan pada sebagian arek-arek Surabaya, Brigjen Mallaby mengadakan pertemuan dengan wakil-wakil Pemerintah RI. Hasil dari pertemuan itu adalah:

1. Inggris berjanji bahwa di antara mereka tidak membawa angkatan perang Belanda.
2. Kesepakatan antara kedua belah pihak untuk menjamin keamanan dan ketentraman.
3. Akan dibentuk kontak biro agar kerja sama dapat berjalan dengan baik.
4. Inggris hanya akan melucuti senjata Jepang saja.

Namun tentara inggris Melanggar perjanjian yang telah disepakati bersama. Pada tanggal 26 Oktober, malam hari, satu peletaon pasukan Field Security Section di bawah Kapten Shaw melakukan penyerangan ke penjara Kalisosok dengan maksud membebaskan Kolonel Huiyer dkk. Tindakan berikutnya ialah dengan mealkukan pendudukan kantor Pos Besar, gedung Internatio dan objek vital lainnya.

Pada tanggal 27 Oktober, pukul 11.00 WIB, pesawat terbang AFNEI menyebarkan pamflet yang berisi perintah kepada rakyat Surabaya dan Jawa Timur untuk menyerahkan senjata yang dirampas dari Jepang. Setelah dikonfirmasikan kepada Brigjen Mallaby, ia mengaku tidak tahu menahu soal penyebaran pamflet. Kemudian  terjadilah kontak senjata antara arek-arek Surabaya dengan pasukan Inggris. Pertempuran semakin meluas ke seluruh penjuru Surabaya. Tentara Sekutu berhasil dipukul mundur oleh arek-arek Surabaya, bahkan pimpinan pasukan Sekutu, Brigjen A.W.S. Mallaby berhasil ditawan.

Perselisihan berhasil diredakan, setelah pada tanggal 30 Oktober, presiden Soekarno, M. Hatta, dan Amir Syarifuddin datang ke Surabaya untuk mendamaikan perselisihan itu. Perdamaian berhasil disepakati dengan ditandatangani oleh kedua belah pihak. Isi perjanjian itu ialah:

1. Sekutu akan menarik diri ke Tanjung Perak dan Darmo
2. Sekutu diizinkan melewati daerah lain yang dikuasai arek-arek Surabaya dan RI hanya untuk mengangkut interniran ke pelabuhan
3. Pertukaran tawanan
4. Komisi kontak yang dibentuk waktu pendaratan Mallaby diaktifkan kembali
5. Patrol bersama akan diadakan di daerah-daerah rawan.

Brigjen Mallaby beserta pasukan Sekutu yang ditawan oleh arek-arek Surabaya dilepaskan kembali berdasarkan kesepakatan perdamaian. Namun setelah wakil-wakil pemimpin RI  meninggalkan kota Surabaya, pertempuran pecah lagi. Dalam pertempuran kali ini, Brigjen Mallaby tewas dalam peperangan di sekitar Jembatan Merah.

Sekutu kemudian mendatangkan bantuan dari Divisi V di bawah pimpinan Mayor Jenderal Mansergh ke Surabaya. Tanggal 9 November, Sekutu mengeluarkan Ultimatum yang berisi ancaman bahwa pihaknya akan menggempur Syrabaya dari darat, laut, dan Udara apabila arek-arek Surabaya tidak mematuhi ultimatum tersebut.

Ultimatum sekutu ternyata tidak dipatuhi oleh arek-arek Surabaya. Penolakan ultimatum itu menyebabkan pertempuran tidak dapat dihindarkan. Tepat pukul 10.00 WIB tanggal 10 November 1945 terjadi pertempuran yang berjalan selama 3 minggu. Rakyat mengungsi ke daerah Sidoarjo dan Mojokerto. Bung Tomo berhasil mengobarkan semangat juang arek-arek Surabaya dan kota sekitarnya melalui pidato-pidatonya di Radio Pemberontakan untuk bergerilya melawan serangan Sekutu. Dalam pertempuran yang tidak seimbang, ribuan pejuang Surabaya dan kota sekitarnya yang gugur untuk mempertahankan kemerdekaan Indonesia. Untuk mengenang peristiwa itu, maka tanggal 10 November 1945 oleh pemerintah RI selalu diperingati sebagai Hari Pahlawan.

Nguda Tarigan Merasa merasa tidak puas atas pelayanan masyarakat yang diberikan Kepolisian Sektor (Polsek) Patumbak.

Pasalnya, berkas pengaduannya No STPL/601/VIII/2009TBS Patumbak tertanggal 28 Agustus 2009, dinilai sangat lamban ditindaklanjuti oleh Polsek Patumbak.

Akibat belum dilimpahkan berkas dugaan tindak pidana pemalsuan yang dilakukan Boino oknum Kepala Desa Lantasan Baru Kecamatan Patumbak Kabupaten Deli Serdang ke Kejaksaan Negeri, maka korban berniat dalam waktu dekat ini akan melaporkan Kapolsek Patumbak ke Propam Poldasu.

“Berkas pengaduan saya sudah cukup lama tidak diproses oleh pihak kepolisian. Diduga pihak penyidik sudah ada ‘main mata’ dengan pelaku, maka hingga kini berkas itu belum juga dilimpahkan,” kata Nguda Tarigan (38) kepada Mandiri, Senin (9/11).

Selain itu, hingga saat ini Boino masih melenggang bebas di lingkungan desa, karena belum diamankan oleh polisi untuk diperiksa atas kasus dugaan pemalsuan.

“Bila kasus itu belum juga dapat dilimpahkan oleh Polsek Patumbak, maka akan diteruskan ke Polda Sumut. Bila perlu Kapolsek Patumbak akan di-Propam-kan,” katanya seraya menuntut keadilan hukum.

Nguda Tarigan menuding pihak kepolisian tidak dapat mengamankan Boino sebagai pelaku pemalsuan tanda tangan sesuai dengan surat ganti rugi sebidang tanah yang dikeluarkan Kepala Desa Lantasan Baru bernomor 592.2/032/LB/V/09 tertanggal 15 Mei 2009 dalam hal ini sebagai pihak pertama Karet Ginting (59) warga Dusun I Cinta Damai Desa Lantasan Baru dijual kepada Andri Junaidi Lubis (34) warga Jalan Suka Sabar Lingkungan XII Kecamatan Medan Johor.

“Bahkan, surat yang dikeluarkan oknum Kades tersebut diketahui oleh Faisal Arif Nasution MSi Camat Patumbak sesuai dengan nomor register 592.2/474/PTB/09 tertanggal 22 Mei 2009 sudah ada menjalin hubungan baik,” bebernya.

Dalam hal ini, Nguda memberikan ultimatum bagi aparat Polsek Patumbak, bila dalam waktu satu minggu ini tidak juga melimpahkan berkas ke Kejaksaan, maka dirinya akan membuat pengaduan ke Propam Poldasu, sehinga permasalahan ini dapat diketahui dengan jelas.

Di tempat terpisah, Kapolsek Patumbak, Iptu Wahyudin ketika dikonfirmasi wartawan koran ini, kemarin menjelaskan, kasus ini masih dalam penyidikan.

“Kasus pemalsuan ini membutuhkan waktu yang panjang. Kami juga harus mendapatkan surat aslinya guna penyidikan. Kalau masalah mengadu ke Propam itu sah-sah saja, karena itukan hak prioritas seseorang,” tegasnya. [tbn]

En cada una de las facetas de éste gobierno se puede diagnosticar perfectamente la lacra política que aqueja a España. Oscurantismo, incompetencia, dureza con la víctima, solidaridad con el agresor. El de los piratas somalíes es otro de esos casos en los que el despropósito suda por cada pliegue.

En primer lugar, el Alakrana es un barco pirata. Sí, pirata. Puesto que faenaba con la bandera vasca como único bastión, y la ley del mar define como pirata “cualquier embarcación que no luzca en su bastión la bandera de un estado reconocido”. Así que, por lo pronto y gracias a las alas que Zetapé da al nacionalismo, el Alakrana es un barco pirata. Queda deslegitimado el gobierno para actuar en legítima defensa. Obligándonos a negociar. Así que, de primeras, espero que los marinos capturados no exijan a nadie que les rescate, porque, por lo que a mí respecta, ese barco y su tripulación son tan míos como de los piratas. Qué prisa se dieron los peneuves de turno, sin embargo, a la hora de pedir ayuda, exigir ayuda, al ministerio de defensa. ¿Por qué no piden ayuda a la policía local? Claro, que igual no sabrían salir de Euskal-Herría.

Lo de Willi es, creo yo, un paripé. Ahora nos hemos enterado de que los piratas del Alakrana se están llevando a los reos españoles a suelo Somalí, donde no podemos pisar ni de puntillas, a razón de uno por día.Como primera condición para sentarse a negociar exigen que les sean devueltos los dos piratas presos, Willy y no Willy, que nunca debieron ser traídos a España. Y no les quepa duda, el gobierno cederá. Ahora sí, no nos queda otra. Al final pescadores nos van a salir por un dineral de varios cientos de miles de Euros.

Lo mejor de todo es que ésta última información la ha dado uno de los reos que aún está en el barco. El gobierno estaba bloqueando la negociación en espera de qué hacer con Willy y Wally, y no estaba trasladando a las familias la evolución del caso. Los piratas, viendo las noticias, han decidido dejar que los marineros sean quienes cuenten a sus familias las evoluciones del caso, en espera de que sea la propia opinión pública la que presione al gobierno para que suelte a los piratas y recline la cerviz, como al final harán.

Pero yo, por mi parte, no quiero hacer de vocero de los piratas somalíes, así que no voy a insultar a de la Vega, ni a Zapatero, por no soltar a Willy (que, repito, es lo que vamos a terminar haciendo). Y al final, basta un momento de volver a escuchar a la mujer que acaba de declarar en el programa de Luis Herrero, y uno se encuentra rogando porque todo quede en unos pocos cientos de millones de euros. Total, ya estamos en la puta ruina. Pero qué asco de gobierno.

Lamento haberme encendido de esa manera, porque estaríamos cebándonos con las víctimas, que es lo que nunca hay que hacer. Una vez escuchadas las últimas informaciones, ya no estoy tan seguro de que el gobierno controle la situación con su maletín. Así que voy a aparcar lo político para momentos mejores, porque en las próximas horas es posible que ocurra una tragedia.

Básicamente, mantengo lo escrito arriba, pero pido disculpas por la dureza de mis palabras. Estaba por borrarlo, pero he pensado que mejor sería dejarlo como está, y matizar aquí. Da colloqui telefonici intercorsi in data 28 ottobre 2009 tra esponenti della Lega dei Ticinesi e della Lega Nord, tra cui Umberto Bossi e lo stesso Giulio Tremonti, appare sempre più chiaro che l’Italia, nelle sue azioni ostili nei confronti della Svizzera, non ha capito quale sia la posta in gioco per la stessa Penisola, e neppure ha capito che con il raid effettuato il 27 ottobre in 76 filiali di banche svizzere in 9 Regioni, ha irrimediabilmente compromesso le relazioni tra i due Stati.

Infatti il raid del 27 ottobre ha portato l’Autorità federale a convocare l’ambasciatore italiano, alzando i toni (cosa che avrebbe dovuto essere fatta da tempo).
L’evento ha avuto ampia risonanza mediatica nazionale e ora anche Oltregottardo politici e popolazione sono a conoscenza di ciò che ignoravano: ossia che l’Italia ha iniziato una vera e propria campagna di guerra (economica) contro la Svizzera.
A seguito del raid italiano, dunque, la questione dello scudo fiscale ai danni del nostro Paese ha finalmente assunto quella portata nazionale che finora non aveva.

Nel citato colloquio telefonico con Bossi e Tremonti è stato confermato il disperato bisogno di denaro della vicina Penisola.
Occorre rilevare che fino ad ora, da parte della Svizzera, nei confronti dell’Italia non è stata posta in essere alcuna misura di ritorsione, ma tali misure sono state solo minacciate. Da martedì 27 ottobre, a seguito del raid di cui sopra, e della conseguente portata nazionale assunta dal caso, la concretizzazione di una controffensiva appare assai più vicina.

A questo punto riteniamo che all’autorità italiana vada fatta un’ultimissima offerta, da accettare con la formula del “prendere o lasciare”. Ossia, l’applicazione alla Svizzera dell’accordo sullo scambio di informazioni che l’Italia ha stipulato con la Gran Bretagna nel 2002. Non si vede motivo per cui l’Italia dovrebbe rifiutare; non si vede, in altre parole, motivo per cui ciò che va bene nelle relazioni con la Gran Bretagna non possa andare bene anche in quelle con la Confederazione.
A seguito di ciò, la Svizzera deve inoltre essere tolta da ogni e qualsiasi “black list”.
Tale offerta deve essere accettata entro il 30 novembre pv.

Se questo non accadrà, la Svizzera dovrà mettere in atto tutte le misure di ritorsione possibili nei confronti dell’Italia, misure che abbiamo già avuto modo di indicare e che possono essere sempre implementate (l’elenco non è infatti da intendersi come esaustivo), nei seguenti ambiti:

- Sospensione della libera circolazione delle persone con pesantissime conseguenze occupazionali su frontalieri, padroncini, distaccati, ecc.
- Blocco alle frontiere dei TIR UE in transito
- disdetta unilaterale dell’euroritenuta
- trattenimento su territorio elvetico del totale delle imposte prelevate ai frontalieri
- revoca degli importanti appalti pubblici (vedi AlpTransit) recentemente ed assurdamente attribuiti ad imprese e consorzi italiani
- Chiusura delle filiali italiane delle banche svizzere (con conseguente licenziamento dei dipendenti)
- Revoca immediata di tutte le collaborazioni transfrontaliere
- martellamento politico sulla piazza finanziaria ticinese affinché i dipendenti italiani siano i primi e gli unici a venire licenziati in seguito alla perdita di posti di lavoro provocata dallo scudo
- annullamento di tutte le rogatorie con l’Italia
- eccetera.

L’Italia, è evidente, non ha fatto alcuna valutazione dei rapporti costi/benefici dell’operazione scudo fiscale, ritenendo forse che la Svizzera avrebbe subìto senza reagire. Purtroppo ci è fin troppo facile intuire su quali basi – anni di politica internazionale improntata al cedimento incondizionato su tutta la linea – si possa essere formata tale convinzione.
Al governo italiano va invece chiarito che gli conviene scendere a più miti consigli ed accettare la proposta di applicare anche alla Svizzera l’accordo sullo scambio di informazioni stipulato con la Gran Bretagna: in caso contrario, il danno che deriverà alla vicina ed ex amica Penisola sarà assai più grande dei benefici che il ministro Tremonti spera di ottenere con lo scudo.

“Ultimatum” parte proprio da qui: dal dolore e dalla rabbia di un padre. Magneto, appunto. Che al già citato Magneto fossero sempre un po’ stati sulle palle questi omuncoli rosa e mollicci che vengono comunemente identificati con il termine di “umani” non è mai stato un segreto per nessuno, anzi. Come però dicevamo prima, se i sogni restano tali poco male. Ma se in un unico colpo uno si vede fare fuori i propri amati figli da un gruppo di supereroi senza cappa e spada, beh, le cose cambiano. Ciò che porrà fine ad un mondo, le vicende che verranno narrate nei cinque numeri americani di “Ultimatum” – riassunti in tre albi in Italia – hanno inizio da quella pallottola che uccide Scarlet e dalla successiva morte del di lei fratello Quicksilver, i due figli di Magneto. E l’ira di un padre può essere inesorabile, senza alcuna pietà.

Non è neanche un caso, poi, che uno zampino consistente in tutto questo macello lo abbia pure messo uno che di nome fa Dottor Destino ed è signore di una terra chiamata Latveria che sarà costretta, così come tutti gli altri abitanti di questo pezzo di roccia disperso nell’universo, a pagare un prezzo molto alto. Ma c’è poco da fare se è vero, come cantava Francesco De Gregori ne “Il bandito e il campione”, che “al proprio destino nessuno gli sfugge”.

Al termine del primo numero, una sorta di ampio preamblo ai due successivi, le vittime umane si contano in termini di milioni. Vista la recente frenesia sorta intorno al fatidico 2012, agli sconvolgimenti che questa data dovrebbe portare – minchia, l’hanno detto i Maya! – e pompata mica male da chi, evidentemente in un manifesto calo di popolarità, non sapeva più come piazzare sul mercato libri e film di serie C, appaiono assolutamente visionarie le tavole che ritraggono un mega tzunami in grado di spazzare via in un solo colpo l’intera isola di Manhattan e con essa tutti i suoi abitanti, siano umani, supereroi o X-Men. L’acqua è democratica, affoga tutti, indistintamente.

Avrete, credo, un vostro personaggio Marvel preferito. Ecco. Qui muore.

Per concludere, questi tre albi italiani sono assolutamente imperdibili per chiunque voglia avere un’idea chiara sugli sconvolgimenti che attendono l’Universo Ultimate, sui personaggi che usciranno di scena, più o meno definitivamente, e sui nuovi assetti di potere che, nell’immediato futuro, daranno il via alla seconda era di questo mondo parallelo così fertile in termini di invenzioni narrative e fantasia sfrenata. O, in altre parole, di divertimento. Se Jeph Loeb ci ha messo la sua penna, David Finch, grazie alle sue tavole semplicemente perfette e magnifiche, ha dato vita alle sue parole nere su sfondo bianco, gettando in pasto a milioni di avidi lettori una epopea che, ancor prima della sua conclusione, è già un classico da riporre nella libreria a fianco di capisaldi della Marvel quali, ad esempio, “Civil War” o “Secret War”. Imperdibile.

Whenever I fly, I always make sure to pick up a new book or two. Most of the flights I take are under two hours, which means about an hour of each flight makes me electronicless, so I need something else to do. I recently got $50 to Amazon through my credit card and decided to pick up a few graphic novels I’ve been wanting.

Dynamo 5 Volume 3: Fresh Blood
by Jay Faerber, Mahmud A. Asrar, Yildiray Cinar, and Marcio Takara

For those that don’t know, Dynamo 5 is a monthly series published by Image Comics. I used to read it in issues but switched to trades for all my comics about a year ago. The premise of Dynamo 5 is simple: Captain Dynamo (this universe’s Superman) was less than loyal to his wife and fathered five children with five different women, each one of them gained one of his super powers.  After his sudden death, his widow sought out the children and assembled them into a crime fighting team to protect Liberty City.

The last trade left off with Dynamo 5 disbanding after their base of operations had been infiltrated by a group of supervillains. Without a group of protectors, Liberty City becomes overrun. This trade picks up with a new hero patrolling the streets: Vigil.

Through a progression of guilt, Scrap returns to the city and creates a new Dynamo 5 consisting of the newcomer Vigil and three established heroes: the mother-daughter duo both named Firebird and Quake. The story follows this groups new adventures against The Veil. I’m not going to give away the plot, but it’s a solid read.

Dynamo 5 as a concept is great and follows the ideas presented in other books like Fantastic Four, X-Men and Avengers. The premise of most of those books is how they are a family first but Dynamo 5 switches it up. They are literally a family only none of them know what to do. Faerber takes generic superhero comic cliches and twists them just enough to make them feel new. The villains are a great balance between a caricature and innovation. The Veil draws heavily from HYDRA but feels new. Bonechill looks like a blue Ghost Rider but works as a character. It’s not about how or why, the villains just are – something that’s been missing from mainstream comics lately. I started reading this during Civil War and it felt right: clear sides, good versus bad. Asrar continues to do great work, though he occasionally gets cheesecakey. I’d love to see him work on any book that involves Emma Frost because Firebird looks just like her.

As a trade, this is a great continuation of the story but you need to start at the beginning to understand it. The book’s recap page doesn’t do much for new readers, but this is one of the best superhero comics out.

Dinotopia: The World Beneath
by James Gurney

I first discovered the Dinotopia series before it was even a series. It was in either 2nd or 3rd grade when I first say the book in my school’s library and was instantly taken in by the captivating artwork. I vaguely remember seeing the second book in the series a few years later but couldn’t recall actually reading either of the books. But I heard last year that a new book in the series was coming out so I went online and picked up the first three books to read. Only two of the books ever arrived, but I bought the second book again to read this month.

Dinotopia is a four book series with amazing oil and watercolor paintings. The prose is lackluster at times but the art makes up for it. The first book is the journal of a father and son who survived being shipwrecked on the mysterious island of Dinotopia. The first book is the best written and the second book tries to be more story-y and that is it downfall. Gurney is clearly an amazing artist, there’s no doubt about that but his skills as an author are limited. The book relies too heavily on adjectives and a string thin plot. The art is exceptional and enough of the plot can be determined through looking at them. Characters are shallow and might as well be named things like token bad guy, token female who becomes love interest randomly and stuffy professor.

Astounding Wolf-Man Volume 2
by Robert Kirkman, Jason Howard, and Ryan Ottley

Another superhero comicbook series from Image Comics. Written by Robert Kirkman, known for Invincible, Walking Dead and writing an Ultimate X-Men series that didn’t make sense, Kirkman knows how to write. Astounding Wolf-Man follows a simple premise: there’s a guy who gets bitten by a werewolf and becomes a superhero.

The last trade left off with Wolf-Man being framed for his wife’s murder and he seeks the training necessary to avenge her. Being on the run, Wolf-Man ends up in some park where a large werewolf calls home. After some training, he learns to control his powers better.

The premise is interesting, well was interesting. The main character is a werewolf and his nemesis is a vampire. Twilight has ruined everything. The stories are okay but not Kirkman’s best work by any stretch. This is the guy who wrote Marvel Zombies – he knows how to do the supernatural. He also writes Invincible, which is probably the second best solo superhero book out there besides Ultimate Spider-Man. It just needs something more. Running from F.L.A.G. Agents doesn’t make for capitvating stories. The best part of this book was when it was an issue of Invincible, so read that instead.

Ultimatum
by Jeph Loeb and David Finch

Jeph Loeb is the reason I switched to trades for reading comics. His run on Ultimates 3 was absurd at best and absolutely awful the rest of the time. For some reason, the higher ups at Marvel thought the Ultimate Universe needs a big mix up.

Know what? The Ultimate Universe had enough for mix-ups. And everything in it lately that has been awful has been Jeff Loeb’s fault. The end of Ultimate Power? That was him. Ultimates 3? Him too. Ultimatum – yeah, Loeb again.

The first two issues aren’t bad. Magneto goes crazy and attacks the earth. Some nice destruction, a bunch of people die. Then Loeb confuses Ultimate Universe with “I can do anything I want because this isn’t in continuity!” He starts ignoring exisitng Ultimate Universe history that doesn’t work for him and just runs with it.

It doesn’t work.

After issue 2, the story falls apart and becomes more of a series of scenes so loosely connected I’m still not sure they are. Blob eats Wasp! Spider-Man’s dead! Magneto get’s KILLED BY WOLVERINE. Yes, Magneto forgot he had powers of magnetism. It’s beyond awful. Don’t read this.

You’ll notice how much I gush about these movies, and it must be said: I’ve been to Fantastic Fest every year, and until now, not once have I NOT seen a single clunker. The quality of the films keeps getting better and better.

Zombieland

Awesome! Hilarious zombie comedy, starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin. Saw this at the Paramount, with the stars (except A.B.) and director there in person for Q&A. Pace was perfect, great characters. Made me laugh, hard. Woody H. wins the prize for cleverness during the Q&A — he’s damn funny. Oddball factoid: This was originally intended as a pilot for a TV series…

Cirqe Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant

John C. Reilly as a vampire? He was perfect in this role — what a great actor. This film is intended as the first of a series, based on the books, and although it was fairly light fare (it’s a kid/teen movie), it was a lot of fun. The special effects were great, and the acting and script were surprisingly good.

A Town Called Panic

Manic, trippy, slapstick claymation, based on the Belgian TV show. I took Walter; he loved it. I had a good time too.

Survival of the Dead

Did I tell you already that I was in a commercial that was directed by George Romero? Did I mention that? Oh, I did? Oh. Anyway, this was pretty good, if not too deep. A flick, really. And it was fun to have George there in person, introducing it and talking about his plans for this and future zombie movies.

Groper Train: Wedding Capriccio

This was the movie where I said to the ticket person, “Well, what’s NOT sold out?” …And so, in I went, having no idea that this was actually soft porn. It’s an old movie (1984), and the director, Yojiro Takita, just won an Oscar this year — many of today’s big directors in Japan got their start in the pink films. So, there was a bunch of hot hot sex in this movie, but it also was a pretty intricate detective film, with many characters and a plot that lost me entirely. Totally worth the 64 minutes — was it really that short? Oh, and the introductory documentary about the movie and its historical/sociological significance was very cool.

Dirty Mind

Maybe my favorite film from the whole fest. This was so, SO good. Basically, a nerdy, lonely guy — one-half of a stunt team — gets a brain injury, which transforms him into a confident, suave player. In-between a bunch of great stunts, the script gets into fairly deep meditations about what makes a person happy, what makes a person lonely, what constitutes strength of character, and more — all at a fairly breathtaking pace. Should he get the operation to change him back? Is he ever going to hook up with the cute, lonely researcher who is studying his injury? What good is being happy if you isolate yourself? The acting was great, the script was amazing, the editing was perfect, the stunts were awesome. This was a terrific film.

Rampage

Uwe Boll’s latest. The film was solid, but it didn’t rock my world. I did enjoy the Q&A with Uwe a lot, though — he talks a lot of smack, and it was interesting to hear him rant about the greater meaning of a person going on a rampage. Paraphrasing: “We’ve created a world that can only result in this kind of behavior.” …And what does it mean to give voice to this type of “fantasy” on film?

District 13: Ultimatum

The sequel to the french action film Banlieue 13 / District B-13. I loved the first one, so I was totally jazzed to see this. As far as plot and whatnot, it wasn’t the best flick I’ve ever seen — but as for stunts and action, it fucking delivered.

Mandrill

This was my third choice at this time slot, so I almost didn’t see it. Lucky break! Karrie League was raving about this film on saturday, and I found out why — along with Dirty Mind, this ended up being my favorite of the fest. Basically, it’s an updated, Latin take on the James Bond film, with the hero as a modern student of the 70’s superspy style and presence. And it was amazing. Marko Zaror, as Mandrill, was incredible. He’s unbelievably graceful in fights and stunts. Plus, he’s gorgeous, which means that this even qualifies as a date movie. He was perfect. I LOVED this movie!

Metropia

The animation is dark and brooding, the story is paranoia-meets-1984. This was a cool movie, with fun little plot twists. But it didn’t leave a huge impression on me, really…

…I wasn’t planning for Metropia to be the last movie I saw of Fantastic Fest — there were so many more I wanted to see — but alas, real life got the better of me, and I had to return to work and parenting and such… Until next year!

No se puede ser tan gallego. Al final, le ha estallado a Rajoy la mascletá de Valencia. Se veía venir, pero un pusilánime es un pusilánime. Camps ha hablado claro. Ni puto caso de la señora Cospedal y un aviso para navegantes: el granero de votos de la derecha se encuentra en su comunidad. Si ese es su mensaje público, cabe imaginarse cual habría sido el privado en el mano a mano que ha mantenido con el líder del Partido Popular. Do ut des, hace un año el presidente valenciano quitaba la soga al cuello de Rajoy colocada por Esperanza Aguirre; ahora le toca al casi ahorcado de entonces devolver el favor.
Camps no quiere ser el chivo expiatorio de la financiación irregular del Partido Popular que se esconde, cada vez menos, tras el caso Gurtel y obra en consecuencia. Arropándose tras la bandera valenciana llama a sus conciudadanos a defender el honor de la Generalitat presuntamente violado por los inquilinos, que no titulares, de la sede de Génova.Como no gobierna para un partido, dice ahora, Valencia no está dispuesta a ser la cabeza de turco que necesita Madrid. El ultimatum es claro. O la señora Cospedal se dedica a sus labores o llegará la tentación pujolista.
Recordemos. Hace un cuarto de siglo, Jordi Pujol ,procesado por el asunto de Banca Catalana, convocó una amplia manifestación en la plaza de San Jaume para protestar conra su procesamiento. Según el presidente de la Generalitat catalana, no se investigaba judicialmente las irregularidades de dicha entidad bancaria sino que González buscaba encarcelarle para terminar con un político que barría a los socialistas. Cambiemos, nombres, apellidos y sustantivos; captaremos lo que puede estar gestándose en Valencia.
No hay que olvidar, además, la creciente interconexión de los intereses catalanes y valencianos en torno al eje del Mediterráneo. Ambas Cámaras de Comercio trabajan conjuntamente, desde hace algún tiempo, en base a reivindicaciones económicas comunes. El valencianismo y el catalanismo, tan opuestos ayer, comienzan a aproximarse a través de ese idioma común que es la apropiación de la plusvalía dentro de la Unión Europea. Hasta ahora, Camps ha dejado hacer sin sumarse; ahora podría añadir un suma y sigue. Al fin y al cabo, es lo que hacen Sanz en Navarra y Basagoiti en Euskadi al anteponer sus intereses a los de la derecha madrileña.
