It's not a smart phone. It's not a laptop. It's really a blend of the two. It's a Ne

It's not a smart phone. It's not a laptop. It's really a blend of the two. It's a Netbook, and they are popping up everywhere. Just about all electronics retailers are now selling Netbooks. Over 20 percent of portable computer sales are Netbooks, with projections topping out at 33 million in total sales this year. No other computing platform has risen to such popularity and acceptance in such a short time.

So, what are these Netbooks and what's their story? For a long time laptop manufactures have been trying to make tiny laptops. But, they were afraid to sacrifice features like performance, CD-ROM drives, disk space, etc. Even the smallest laptops were still heavier and bigger than hard cover books. Then, around 2006, Microsoft and its partners teamed up to come out with the idea of the UMPC (Ultra-Mobile PC). They were tiny. They did sacrifice performance and features found in a laptop. People loved them, but nobody bought them. Why? They cost more money than a laptop that had all the features and performance. Most people thought, “Why bother.”

Around that same time there was a project started called OLPC (one laptop per child). Its purpose was to create a laptop for people in third world countries that would perform basic network computing tasks like email, Web browsing, word processing, etc. While the project succeeded in creating the laptop, the final product had no commercial appeal. However, it did show that there was a market for an inexpensive computer that does basic tasks.

In 2007, Asus released the Eee PC. It was 8.9” x 6.5” and had a 7-inch display, weighing in at just two pounds. The initial model ran the Linux operating system, had a simple user interface that allowed for email, Web browsing, and had basic office software for word processing and other tasks. On top of all that, every model was wireless network ready. The best part was the price. They started at $245. Asus couldn’t make them fast enough.

One important fact to glean from Netbook’s meteoric rise is that most people simply use their computers for email, browsing the Web, and some minimal word processing. These consumers do not want to browse the Web on a cell phone, and don’t want to drag a laptop around. They now have a solution that is almost affordable enough to be an impulse buy.

Other laptop manufacturers (HP, Dell, MSI, and some others) have taken notice that this little Netbook was eating into their laptop sales. Now, they have all introduced their version of the Netbook. All of them offer basic functionality (some even run Microsoft Windows), they are all tiny, wireless, and, best of all, they are affordable.

Editor’s note: Though it’s over a month away, if you are planning on attending Shop.org’s Annual Summit in Las Vegas this September make sure and stop by Knotice’s booth (#619). We’re giving away over 20 Netbooks!

The search is over… I have found the premium netbook. To everyones surprise it’s not mad

The search is over…

I have found the premium netbook. To everyones surprise it’s not made by HP or Dell. It’s not even an American Company. It’s the Everun Note.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen…there are some compromises!

This little devil packs a 7″ screen, which may be a little outdated for those of us staying current with the whole ultraportable world. However, it has got to be the smallest netbook out there with all the features. No more HD playback woes!

The Everun Note sports a 1.2 GHz AMD Turion Dual Core 64 bit capable processor. Yes kids, you read it! DUAL CORE 64 Bit! There are options of SSDs and HDD of up to 80GB. 1GB RAM Standard and…check this out!, 128MB of Video Ram (ATI RS690E)! Now you can play some HD video and play some of your classic games. It also comes with a stock Touchscreen so all you modders out there will be quite happy. A 1.3 MP webcam making videocalls quite possible. 2 USB ports, 1VGA, 1USB Mini, Bluetooth…the works!

There are no OS options and Linux as an OS.

Compromises…

1. Battery Life is reported to be “Up to three hours”, making it 2 hours in the real world.
2. Optical Mouse (although you do have touchscreen and USB ports).
3. Seven (7″) screen, but thats the beauty of it!
4. Price (Starts at over $800 US).
5. Windows XP (It could probably run Vista fine if RAM is upgraded, or Windows 7 for that matter).

If you can get past these compromises and have an incredible need of something small and yet capable of delivering, be sure to check out the Raon Digital Everun Note at their website, http://www.raondigital.com/fnt_english/evn01.asp.

UMPC Portal has made a FULL Review of this little toy, claiming it’s able to run Unreal Tournament 2003, Half Life and other intensive applications. Real the full review here…

TrustedReviews had this to say

“Refreshingly innovative and scandalously cheap, Asus’ Eee PC is a great little device for those with basic needs. A great keyboard makes working on it surprisingly easy, while media playback adds a little extra to the package. Internet browsing is also a key component and though the low resolution screen lets it down somewhat, at this price it would be churlish to penalise it too greatly.”

Also erstmal wieder die allwissende Müllhalde befragen.

Betriebssysteme: Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, Linux

Größe (Windows Installation): 3,73MB

Bemerkung:

Portabler EXE-File

I’ve been listening to all the talk about Google Chrome, the cool little demonstration videos and the EULA back tracking and find it all very interesting.

I have to say I haven’t used Chrome yet but that’s okay because this isn’t a product review.

I’m most interested because everyone is calling Chrome a Browser and I’m not sure it is.

John C Dvorak, has said he thinks this will lead to a Google operating system but I’m not sure this isn’t the operating system itself, loosely anyway.

Maybe I’m linking elements together incorrectly but for me you have to consider 3 elements and the impact they will have on the Technology Industry and beyond.

First, Google Apps, essentially a Software as a Service (SaaS) model. Why bother with Microsoft Office if you can have all your applications on the Internet and using Google’s computing power rather than you own.

This is what is being called ‘the cloud’, Apple have their MobileMe platform allowing you to store your files on the Internet so that you can access them from anywhere.

All of these services are trying to achieve the same thing, use the Internet more, use it for storage, processing, synchronisation etc.

Secondly, there is Internet access and generally it is getting quicker and more available away from your office or home; there is WiFi, WiMax, 3G etc

Third there are the devices themselves. Asus Eee PC, the really small PC using a Linux based operating system. With this you don’t get a huge amount of power but it’s very portable and hey if your going to use Google’s Servers for your processing needs why do you want a big laptop when a small one will do.

Also there is the iPhone, which I’m using to write this post, or Google Android or whatever the competition comes up with in the future. These devices are pretty much connected to the Internet or could be 24 7.

So put them all together and what you get is ultra small and ultra mobile devices which are incredibly powerful (they have the power of Google’s servers) and they are constantly connected to the internet for browsing, email, letters and reports, spreadsheets, presentations or data access.

You can choose a pocket sized smart phone or a more traditional laptop style or indeed an ultra mobile, a tablet, or if you prefer a windows PC or a media centre to give you access to your Video on Demand service.

The choice is yours, to suit your needs and your budget.

So why do you want to pay for that ultra fast PC, unless you are gaming, or why do you want the power of Microsoft Windows or Office when it’s all more conveniently on the cloud and you can access it anywhere via the same interface and applications you are used to. You can access you office files without the need to bring them home in your brief case and you can access your home files to see how much you need to pay that bill for.

There are of course some down sides to this scenario but most of these will be fixed over time.

What do you do when you don’t have access to the Internet, I travel most days by London Underground, and until they get WiFi it’s going to be dead time in this scenario.

Also there are security and EULA issues.

Finally there are alternatives, kind of, why not put all your files on a memory stick and if you need applications you can use a U3 memory stick to take your desktop with you from computer to computer.

So is Google chrome a browser or a platform giving you access to the cloud and all of your computing needs through any device running it.

As always, we live in exciting times, which is why I love tech and my job so much.

South Korean electronic parts maker Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. said Wednesday it has signed a dea

South Korean electronic parts maker Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. said Wednesday it has signed a deal with Intel Corp. to provide wireless modules for use in mobile devices from the U.S. company.

The deal calls for Samsung to provide various modules, including WiMAX and WiBro modules, to be used in production of Intel’s ultra-mobile PCs and other mobile Internet devices starting in the third quarter, the Korean company said. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

Ultra-Mobile PC, abbreviated UMPC, is a palm-sized tablet PC initially developed jointly with Microsoft Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co., among others.

Samsung Electro, an affiliate of Samsung Electronics, completed development of the WiMAX and WiBro modules last year, which allow access to high-speed Internet even when users are in motion. WiMax is a wireless Internet technology developed by Intel Corp., and WiBro is an upgraded version of WiMax developed by South Korean telecom companies.

In August 2006, Samsung Electronics signed a deal with Sprint Nextel, Motorola Inc. and Intel to cooperate in developing and commercializing WiBro in the U.S., one of the world’s largest communications markets.

Samsung Electronics expects that the number of its WiBro network users in the U.S. will exceed 100 million this year and it will grow to 140 million and 170 million in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
