When I awoke there was a throbbing pain in my head from when the Special Forces smacked me over the head. I tried to move but was chained to a metal chair. My middle finger was still broken, it was really uncomfortable because there were these sort of metal mits on my hands. I sat waiting for whatever the hell the world was going to throw at me next, I didn’t have to wait long. Two men in dark suits with shaved heads and black leather gloves. They unchained me from the chair and out of the solitary room. One of them dragged me along by my jacket through the Psychic Ward, and the other had a pistol to my head. Behind every sanitized door was a psychic waiting to be executed.

But to my surprise they dragged my right by the WWII style gas chamber and into a sort of study. With walls and shelves of  cherry wood, every shelf was filled with books, and once all the shelves were filled there were books piled onto the floor and desks and tables. There was a man sitting at a desk at the back of the room, he had thinning gray hair, and a green plaid suit. The dark suite men released me and left, closing the door behind them.

“Hello, Rasputin,” the man in the green suit began in an indifferent tone. “I have been expecting you.” I am gaping, expecting me? What the hell for?

Last night’s Planning Commission hearing on the College Avenue Safeway went well overall. Sure, the neighbors showed up in force to try to stop the project or at least to greatly reduce the scale of the project. But it was just a scoping session so staff and commissioners repeatedly reminded them to stick to scoping issues and that the merits of the project would be discussed later.

As I listened to speaker after speaker talk about their grave concerns about an expanded Safeway, I realized that they seemed to believe that the cost of doing nothing is nothing – that if we leave Safeway the way it is, there would be no cost to the neighborhood, environment, or the economy. I’d like to borrow a concept that Robert at the California High Speed Rail blog came up with about HSR – the cost of doing nothing is not nothing. Robert argued that not building HSR would end up costing the state much more in the long run, with increased air and car traffic, needs to upgrade airports and highways, pollution, etc.

In the same vein, we need to ask the question: what is the cost of leaving the Safeway as it is now? John Gatewood from ULTRA came up with these questions, about the environmental impacts of leaving the store as is:

• How efficient are the existing HVAC systems in the present store?
• How efficient are the existing refrigeration and freezer units?
• How efficient is the energy usage?
• How efficient is the existing loading dock? Do trucks need to idle longer because of lack of space, etc?
• How efficient is the existing parking lot configuration? Do drivers spend too much time looking for a space?
• What is the “embodied energy” of the existing structure, the energy that went into producing the materials used in the existing structures?
• What are the energy and carbon footprint coasts of demo’ing the existing structures and can these be recouped in the energy efficiencies and more environmentally sound new construction?

Beyond environmental impacts, the current store has real negative impacts on the neighborhood that effect quality of life and local business. In my comments to the Planning Commission last night, I told my story of being a pedestrian that frequently goes to that Safeway, as it’s a short walk from my home. Getting to the Safeway on foot is a nightmare – there are multiple opportunities to get hit by cars, and there are multiple times when both car driver’s and pedestrian’s views are obstructed. Part of the reason for this is that there are so many driveways – 9 in total on College and Claremont. Just the fact that the new Safeway will reduce the curb cuts from 9 to 4 will be a huge benefit to pedestrians, bicyclists, and to safety.

I’ve mentioned this before, but the current Safeway and its huge surface parking lot is a blight on the neighborhood that’s quite creepy at night. It is also entirely uninviting – unless I’m going to Safeway I avoid that side of the street entirely and often just go to a different part of Rockridge that’s more inviting to do my shopping.

To me, the decision is obvious. I’m tired of this dangerous, ugly, and uninviting store being the center of the Alcatraz/College/Claremont shopping district. The cost of doing nothing is high, especially when we have the potential for a beautiful designed Safeway with hidden parking and more small, street level stories to keep the neighborhood dynamic.

Os momentos mais divertidos, emocionantes e de grande ansiedade na gravidez são as ultrassonografias. É quando a gente consegue ver um pouquinho do Luiz Henrique e saber se ele está bem.

Os chutes diários – e agora são muuuuitos – já acabaram com aquela sensação de ‘ele está mesmo lá? ele está bem?’. Mas vê-lo e saber que tudo corre como deveria é muito bom.

Ontem nos encontramos com o Luiz Henrique mais uma vez. O exame da vez era uma ‘dopplerfluxometria’ para ver se a corrente sanguínea dele está funcionando bem, se o cordão umbilical está cumprindo seu papel e avaliar risco de pré-eclâmpsia. Tudo estava ótimo.

Só que esse exame não mede o bebê nem faz estimativa de peso. Já tínhamos sido avisados que quase não veríamos o Luiz Henrique, mas a médica era ótima e viu que nós estávamos ansiosos por encontrá-lo.

O Luiz Henrique não quis colaborar muito, foi um pouco implicante (não sei a quem ele puxou!!!! hihihihihi), colocou as duas mãos no rosto e não deixou a gente ver muita coisa. Mas deu pra tirar uma ‘fotinho’. Vejam como ele está gordinho!!!!

I got home and put on the Texas versus Baylor game; it was 40-0 AT THE HALF. Texas is too strong, fast, etc. for Baylor; this really looks like a division I versus as division II team at the moment.

This most certainly is an estranged world, and an unfair one at that. People like me aren’t accepted in regular society. I am single, always have been, probably always will be. I have no friends, and haven’t since I was thirteen. And it’s all because of these god damned powers that I didn’t even ask for. And to think that I was a normal boy for thirteen years then BAM! Like a ton of bricks it all came down.

I remember it like it had happened only a few hours ago, December 7th, 2003, I sat eagerly on our old couch retrieved from a dumpster two years prior. I wait for my mother to bring me my presents, “There you are,” she says, I snatch the presents away from her with almost an animal instinct, I tore into the colorful paper with two hands. Inside is a box, hurriedly I take off the lid, there are books, all the ones I wanted. Then all my friends gather around to examine my gift. I was overtaken with excitement, and it felt like there was something building up inside me. The energy is released, I see a huge, fiery explosion, the people around me are turned to charred skeletons, warm blood splashes my face. Neighbors called police, they all call me a “child murderer”. Luckily the cops acknowledge it was an accident and don’t send me to jail. But none of my other relatives will take me in, no matter how much they loved me, they were too afraid they would meet the same fate as my friends, and my mother.

It is unanimous, I am to be sent to an orphanage. My aunt is the one who takes me, she informs the watcher of children of my “abilities”, and they hold a public gathering to introduce Rasputin Write, the Pyrokentic Freak. I was once again in a state of exile, although it didn’t matter as much,these kids were strangers, unlike my family. Five years I spent there until I was “fit for the outside world”, bullshit. I was no different from five years prior, hell if I was any different it was my hatred for the society that had shunned me.

My hate was not soothed by the fact that they just threw me out into the world, they didn’t care, no one did. With no real world experience it was very hard to find a suitable job. Most turned me down before the interview was over because of my pyrokenesis, and of course what happened five years prior. No where to turn I end up with a dead end job at a news stand very, very bad choice. A job out in public where they can all see my orange patch with the flame on it sewn to my Domo-kun jacket signifying that I have pyrokenesis. I felt like a Jew during World War II.

The cramped apartment that was mandatory for psychics was not a fun place to live, especially it’s in an apartment complex mostly populated by normal humans. However, there is another psychic who possess invisibility, she’s lucky. Don’t see her around much for obvious reasons. She’s a good person, the on;y thing that I don’t like about her is that she gives me sympathy for what happened five years ago. I already have enough sympathy for a whole season of Dr. Phil.

As I walked from my apartment to the news stand I received the usual hate, people made fun of me, threw things at me and even hit me. The whole time I resisted the urge snap my fingers and boil the water in their body. An extremely horrible way to die, skin red, blistered, slowly dying from 100 degree heat in their body. Truly horrible.

I was at least two blocks from my news stand when I hear a woman screaming from the alley to the right of me. I look down the dark crevice in between the buildings and see a man with a knife threatening a woman at least ten years younger than him. What were his intentions? Mugging? Murder? Rape? No matter I walk down the alley as loud as possible attempting to make the man hear me. He let’s go of the woman’s collar, she toppled onto the ground. The man turns toward me, I stop, he raises his knife. “You better get the fuck out of here you psychic piece o’ shit, this is my piece of ass.” I take my right hand out of my pocket and snap setting the man’s coat on fire. He screams then takes off his coat and stamps out the fire.

“That’s it you psychic fuck you die!” The man charges at me, I snap my fingers and the knife becomes white hot, and is reduced to liquid that oozes onto the ground eating away at the concrete. “O-Oh shit,” he says. I snap again, the man cringes in pain, his skin turns red, and blistered, he topples onto the ground as the water in his body comes to a boil. I snap for the final time, he is set ablaze. The woman is gone, hopefully thankful for my act of heroism.

I walked the two blocks to the news stand, there is already a line beginning to form, I was late, my boss would dock my pay, no matter it was irrelevant how much money I make. I get there and a punk with a knot top and a Job for a Cowboy shirt, “About time, Fire Starter,” he says mocking my misfortune.

“Go away.” I respond with discontent.

“What the fuck did you say to me, Fire Starter?”

“I said: ‘Go away’, there was trouble, come back when everything is in order. Besides, we aren’t even open yet.” The punk doesn’t take kindly to my smart ass remark and punches me in the face, I tumble backwards and into the news stand, the wood crumples underneath my body as the magazines newspapers and comics rain down on top of me.

“I’m out of here!” the punk says, luckily he lives up to the promise, he laughs as he leaves and the people behind him laugh as well and leave. I get up soreness all over my body, I come to the conclusion that since there is no news stand that I can take the day off.

I open the door to my apartment and collapse onto my bed, as my eyes start to close there is a brutal kick and wood snapping. I feel two hands grasp the back of my jacket and pull me to my feet, a plastic baton smashes me in the head, this gives me a headache, however, I am still conscious. I snap setting one of the men on fire, he starts rolling on the floor screaming. The man holding me grabs my middle finger and breaks it, not allowing me to snap. He hits me two more times over the head with the baton, I am unconscious.

John works in the Graphic Arts Industry and is a resident of Temescal.

Safeway is in the planning stages of replacing the existing store and gas station at College & Claremont with a new store. (Their plans can be found on their website.)

On Wednesday evening, November 18, this project will be before the Planning Commission. No decisions will be made at this time, as it is an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) scoping session to solicit comments from the community as to what should be studied in the EIR for this project.

The latest version of Safeway’s proposal is an improvement upon the previous iterations they have shown the community but it could still be better. ULTRA, Urbanists for a Livable Temescal Rockridge Area, agrees that the existing store and gas station must be replaced. These two relics from the auto-centric 1960’s have no place in the small-scale urban village that Rockridge has become.

But one of the project alternatives studied MUST include a housing component. We think it is an excellent location for senior housing. This site has very good transit access and it is in an aging community. Rockridge is built-out. There are very few locations where there is even the possibility of building higher density housing. This site is one of those rare locations. This project is an opportunity to do some strategic planning for the future of the neighborhood. We are sure that now and in the future there will be more and more residents who will want to remain in the neighborhood but no longer want the burden of maintaining a single family house. Senior housing at this site would address this coming need. Furthermore Safeway has already partnered with a housing developer at the Mission Bay development in San Francisco. They now have the experience of building a new Safeway with a housing component and they need to bring that experience to this site.

In Safeway’s latest proposal they have small storefronts on the first floor along College Avenue and the Safeway store above. We think the Safeway should be on the first floor BEHIND the small storefronts. This has multiple benefits – It reduces the bulk of the building because the lot slopes up more than a full story in the rear, meaning that the supermarket would be partially below-grade, greatly reducing the visual impact of the store. The storefronts lining College would echo the existing land use, that is, small storefronts close together creating a lively and dense retail experience. These storefronts need maximum flexibility as to their eventual use. Ideally they would be filled with independent businesses and that should remain the goal for these stores. But just because a project has ground floor retail doesn’t mean that there are businesses that can be successful in these spaces. A row of empty storefronts does nothing to help the community.

Putting Safeway behind the storefronts will make these spaces much more flexible. As part of the Conditional Use Permit (CUP) and on an interim basis only, each of these spaces could be used as retail spaces for Safeway’s various departments. Having their various specialty departments with their own entrances on College Avenue could serve as an inducement for customers to enter the main Safeway store. As part of the CUP and on an interim basis only, these storefronts could also be permitted to be used by neighborhood-serving community groups. Having the Safeway store on the first floor would also have the additional benefit of freeing up the second and possible third floor for housing. Housing would not encompass the entire roof space but only the periphery along the avenues, echoing the existing land use pattern along College Avenue. The larger portion of the rooftop could be a parking deck for the store.

Instead of a garage entrance on College Avenue like in Safeway’s proposal, we think there should be a public plaza. The entrance to the first floor Safeway would be at the back of this plaza. What is missing and needed at this end of College Avenue is a civic space, a place for people to gather. This would address that need. We envision this space evolving into a place where small public events such as arts & crafts fairs could be held. This would be to the community’s benefit and it would redound to Safeway’s benefit too because the more attractive the public space outside the store, the more likely it is people will enter the store.

Since I’ve been doing this feature on my blog, I’ve really started to notice homonyms, homophones–even antonyms and synonyms, in everyday conversations and on the radio (I listen all day and into the evening to my local public radio stations, KPCC Pasadena and KVCR San Bernardino, and talk radio KFI Los Angeles ).

It’s amazing what you discover when you listen carefully to a person’s choice of words. What is it they’re really trying to say? Especially when someone is speaking spontaneously and not from a prepared statement.

When moving quickly, sometimes the mind will slip on a word. Reminds me that I should explore malapropisms in my next post.

People with Borderline Personality Disorder often experience emotional dysregulation.

OK, dysregulation is a stretch, you don’t hear it very often. Actually, you never hear it outside of medical school. I heard the word “dysregulation” for the first time last week at a NAMI meeting (check out my blog postings for more on the National Alliance on Mental Illness) when dysregulation was mentioned in a talk about borderline personality disorder (BPD). BPD, a form of mental illness, explains why there are so many really annoying people among us. BPD is biologically based, so those people can’t help being assholes, and you have to grit your teeth and forgive them for they know not what they do.

Utopia vs. Dystopia
utopia (noun) any visionary system of political or social perfection
dystopia (noun) a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding
I don’t know if California has ever been a utopia, maybe before any Europeans showed up, but it sure is headed towards a dystopia, thanks to our dysfunctional “leaders” in Sacramento.

Other interesting “U” words
I like browsing through the u’s in my dictionary. First, it doesn’t take long because there are relatively few words beginning with “U,” nothing like the A’s, M’s, S’s, and T’s, but more to offer than the Q’s, X’s, and Z’s. And second, a lot of intriguing words start with “U.”

In a recent visit, I stumbled on “ultra” and its variations…
ultra going beyond others or beyond true limits; from the Latin “ultra,” beyond.
ultraconservative extremely conservative
ultrahigh frequency a radio frequency between 300 and 3000 megahertz
ultralight a very light recreational aircraft capable of carrying only one person
ultramarine a very bright deep blue color
ultramodern extremely or excessively modern in idea, style or tendency
ultramontane 1: of or relating to countries or peoples beyond the mountains 2: favoring greater or absolute supremacy of papal over national or diocesan authority in the Roman Catholic Church ( I actually had reason to look up “ultramontane” last month as I was reading a book about the Spanish Inquisition).
ultrapure of the utmost purity
ultrashort having a wavelength below 10 meters; short duration
ultrasonic having a frequency too high to be heard by the human ear
ultraviolet having a wavelength shorter than those of visible light and longer than those of X rays
ultra vires beyond the scope of legal power of authority

Then there’s all the words that “un” unravels the base word behind it, my favorites being “unlikely” and “unbelievable.”  Check it out, and let me know your ultrafavorite “un”-prefixed word. “Unforgettable” anyone?

 “What Can I Say?” 2008-01-05

I’ve traveled a bit through six countries and it’s interesting to note the values different cultures place on the humdrum aspects of daily living. Take the matter of bathroom tissues, for example. I’d say that, on the whole (no pun intended), American bathroom tissues are by far the best. After you’ve experienced those little sheets of waxed paper or the softer varieties made with spun glass, it’s just so comforting to be back in America. What a relief! It takes a few days for the redness to subside, but gives a new appreciation for the society in which we live.

The quality and variety of American tissues is amazingly high. Visit the average supermarket, for example, and you probably have the choice of about a half-dozen brands. Plus, you can find different colors, textures and whatnot all. The available possibilities are almost overwhelming. Likewise, in traveling around America, the quality of tissues found in filling stations, hotels, campsites and other people’s houses is uniformly of moderately good to excellent quality. Still, it’s good to get back home to our favorite brand.

We’ve tried quite a few brands, but we always go back to Charmin Ultra Soft. It’s just so, well, soft and gentle. Plus, it’s extremely absorbent. For those who appreciate the finest in day-to-day living, wipe after wipe this brand is about as good as you can get. We typically buy it in a megasized package at our local warehouse club.
