Obscure one this, but a good opportunity to sing the praises of UltraMon, a Windows product that adds some very useful features if you’re using more than one screen.

One of the features is adding a taskbar—the bit at the bottom of the screen in Windows—to the second or third monitor, making it easier to organise your programs and stuff.

But it does go missing in action sometimes, and reinstalling the software won’t always solve the problem. Here, from the product’s own support page, is how to fix it.

Check you’ve enabled it in the system tray menu:

If it’s still not showing up, close UltraMon (UltraMon menu > Close)

Open regedit.exe, the registry editor

Find the registry key ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Realtime Soft\UltraMon\Smart Taskbar’ and delete it:

Close the Registry.

Restart UltraMon using the UltraMon icon in Start menu > Programs

The Smart Taskbar should now be visible.

Ultramon…Know it? If you do, you probably love it….Its a great program to manage 2 or more monitors on your system. However, I was truly disappointed when I installed it on vista. At first it appeared that the latest release of Ultramon was working perfectly, I had my task-bar across both screens, could save the position of all my desktop icons and had helpful buttons on each open window to quickly

switch between monitors

Satisfied that I had done myself and my computer a great service, I continued surf and feeding and so on. Suddenly, interrupting my contented perusing of techmeme’s latest stories, Vista informed me that Ultramon had stopped working and would be shut down !?!?!?!?! Confused, I reopened the program, ran fine…strange???…then i saw it, a popup from Vista DEP. The Data Execution Protection system had stopped Ultramon and shut it down. Why? What did it ever do to vista, apart from beautifully display my desktop over 2 screens. Well…I dont know…still at a lost, I looked for a solution…nothing. not a word about this problem, everyone reports Ultramon working perfectly on vista…so, my question, what am I doing wrong?

For the time being, I have installed Display Fusion v2.2.1 to manage my monitors, but i miss my taskbar. Please, am I missing something simple? Where have I gone wrong?

UPDATE: Couldn’t stand Display Fusion, all that install for no extra functionality. Urgh, so I went back to Ultramon, having less troubles but every once in a while it will force-quit. :S Who knows, still I really love the features in Ultramon, check it out here.

UltraMon [link]

VirtuaWin [link] *free software!*

MultiDesk [link] *free software!*

WinSplit Revolution [link] *free software!*

Allways On Top Maker [link] *free software!*

At work I use a nice dual monitor setup on a new computer running Windows Vista 64 bit. I had installed UltraMon but didn’t use the really nice taskbar feature it has, where you can have your taskbar span both monitors. Not only span, but span in a smart way. Applications on monitor 1 show up on the taskbar on monitor 1 and applications on monitor 2 show up on the taskbar on monitor 2. Anyways, I decided to use this feature today as I realized it could be super useful. After installing UltraMon however, I moved around my monitors and changed which one was the primary. Somehow this seemed to screw up the UltraMon taskbar because when I went to use it, I ended up having 2 taskbars stacked on top of each other on my primary monitor. So there I sat, with my windows taskbar at the bottom of my primary screen, another taskbar stacked on top of it and no taskbar on my secondary monitor. Not what I wanted.

A quick search came across this forum post at the Realtime Soft (makers of UltraMon) website. Seems other people are having the same issue yet no solution had been found. I was ready to give up. I tried uninstalling and re-installing and still no luck.

So sitting there, feeling defeated, I decided to right click on the second taskbar (that spare one on top of my windows taskbar), low and behold…we had some options! The one labeled “Add taskbar for” looked particulary interesting to me. Played around a little bit and was able to get the taskbar moved to the secondary monitor. Peace was mine once again. I was no longer defeated by a piece of software, a very good piece of software by the way.

Below are the steps to take if you ever find yourself with stacked taskbars using UltraMon:

Right click the top task bar (the one created by UltraMon, above the standard task bar)

Select “Add Taskbar for” -> “Monitor 2″

Now you should have a second taskbar where you want it but still have that other annoying one above the standard windows one. Just right click the extra one and click Close. Then when it asks “Choose what you want to do:”, select “close only this taskbar”.

Thought I would share this just in case anyone has the same problem in the future.

I’m always on the lookout for awesome and unique images to use for my desktop. Most of the time, folks walking into my office and looking over my shoulder want one thing – my source. Well, I’ve found a new source of some AMAZING images – mandolux. There are images for both single and dual monitor in a huge variety of sizes and a wide selection of subjects – you just may have to dig a bit to find the best one. Now I’ve got to go thru the whole archive…

BTW, if you’re not running Ultramon then you’re missing on some great productivity gains (no more “minimize, move, then maximize” to get the window to the other monitor) as well as a few nice features (separate images for each monitor please!).
