Ultraviolet is out and it live up to all of its hype. Kid Sister shows her versatility as an MC by effortlessly delivered her rhymes to various style of musics. This girl definitely can rap! Here’s a track taken from the album, produced by the current king of dub step Rusko and titled “Step”.

While in New Orleans in October, I was asked by the Aussie ABC Online to offer some thoughts on the popularity of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga and the state of the vampire mythos today. The article has appeared here, in a preview of the latest movie’s opening.

If ever there was a city in which to talk vampires, it’s New Orleans, or at least the French Quarter, with its uneven, gas-lit sidewalks and classic architecture, and the legacy of Anne Rice never too far away.

Meanwhile, my local cinema is filled with Twilight posters, standees and even a merchandise table that includes, I kid you not, an umbrella for $50. Can someone please make it stop now?

Fortunately, as some kind of counterbalance, however unbalanced that balance might be, there are shows such as Being Human: cleverly scripted, well acted, an engaging take on the supernatural trying to co-exist with the mundane. The premise sounds a little like a gag — a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost all live in this house and… — but it’s not a laughing matter. Think Ultraviolet in a sharehouse. Yummy. Maybe there’s hope after all… even if it doesn’t have a brolly.

Chicago’s Kid Sister finally saw the release of her debut album, Ultraviolet this week. The single Right Hand Hi has been out for awhile and is very, very catchy.

She’s playing with Flosstradamus (featuring her brother and DJ J2K) at House of Blues the day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 25). The video is from a show in Los Angeles last month.

Idris Elba is cool. That’s all you need to know. He was the ex-SAS bloke in the UK show Ultraviolet that saw him taking down Vampires, or leeches as he called them. Stateside you will know him mainly from The Wire. Plus he got to snog Beyonce in Obsessed. He is currently working on The Losers which is an adaption of the excellent DC Comic about special forces types on the run.

It looks as if he is on a comic book roll as Heat Vision have the news he has been cast in Marvel Studio’s Thor movie – not as a human character, but as the Asgardian known as Heimdall.

In the comic Heimdall is the brother of the warrior Sif. He is the all-seeing and all-hearing guardian sentry of Asgard, he stands on the rainbow bridge, Bifrost and stands watch for any attacks to Asgard. For ages, he stood as the guardian of Asgard, defending the city’s gates from any intruders, and was one of the most trusted servants of Odin.

He has also had a few battles with Thor in the comics either stopping him entering or leaving Asgard so I could well imagine we’ll see something like that in the film.

The movie follows Thor (Chris Hemsworth) a Norse God banished to Earth for his arrogance and reckless behavior in the Asgard, the capital city of the Norse Gods. On Earth, he falls in love with a nurse named Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), but must become a true hero when his sinister brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) brings the darkest forces of Asgard to wreak destruction on humanity. Directed by Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet), the film co-stars Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgård, Dominic Cooper, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Tadanobu Asano.

It is shaping up to be an amazing cast.

Kid Sister’s debut album, Ultraviolet, finally came out yesterday after a couple years of hype. I need not get into the whole drama, cuz many others have already done so. The point is, 2 years ago we heard/were amused by the song “Pro Nails.” Kanye was slightly less ubiquitous then, so when he guested on that song, peeps’ ears perked up, and Kid Sister got a hometown boost from fellow Chicagoan Kanye.

I have just one thing to say to Ultraviolet’s haters: this album should be heard in the context of what we hear on the radio. The production sounds like it cost about a million dollars more than any Jay Sean/Jason DeRulo/Treyz Songs/Drake/whoevs ’90sesque club single. Defmute asked me, all concerned, “Are there Chris Brown synths?” This means: “How generic and cheap does her production sound?” My answer: Not bad. Heard on hi-def headphones, the opening eurodisco stomp of “Right Hand Hi” sounds pretty darn expensive.

True, Ultraviolet is not in league with genre-bending high-minded pop, a la Kanye or M.I.A. But let’s not punish this album for what it never tried to be. This album is a cheerful throwback, all ’80s neon and Bassment Party rap reminiscent of last year’s big shit The Cool Kids. This album is a more successful Santigold, because I am certain that no one, other than the critics who ludicrously endorsed her, actually listened to that album. I think people will listen to and enjoy Kid Sister–she’s goofy, she’s pretty, she raps about Payless and Bath & Body works (that is to say, she is humble), and she has some good producers. This album also taught me a couple things about dance genres, and though the experts might scoff, dudes, I don’t know what kind of manic tom makes good juke, and if I hear some distortion that reminds me of MSTRKRFT, I will be happy. Hence Kid Sister sounds like fun dance music to me.

Not all songs are solid gold, but I would say that 50% of the album is great, including “Right Hand Hi,” “Life on TV,” “Control,” “Get Fresh,” and “Switch Board.”

So check it out and stop hatin. And for god’s sake, Pfork, don’t say Sister’s rhymes remind you of “actors in teen movies rapping for laughs.” Maybe it’s cuz you haven’t heard a woman rapping and having fun at the same time… like, ever.

In a move that I found completely shocking and may well be one of the top 10 controversies of 2009, Kid Sister has finally released her debut album.  Like no joke! I have a copy in my hands! It was one of two on sale at FYE. Which either means that she has a LOT of fans who bought her CD orrrrrrr that FYE only got 2 copies in their shipment. Regardless, it was one of their featured new releases and hopefully it’ll go somewhere cause Kid Sister rocks and the CD is pretty fantastic. If you’re too lazy to go to a store to pick it up, it’s only 7.99 on itunes. Which is a pretty fantastic deal. Here’s some remixes to help you realize what you’re missing.

Kid Sisters’ LP “Ultraviolet” is out! The long awaited album from the Chicago native hit stores November 17th under Downtown Records. We first heard of Kid Sister 3 years ago with “Pro Nails” that had a Kanye West cameo. Now with a new look and new style, Kid Sister brings us a new sound for us to enjoy. The album has an influence of the fast beats and electronic soul of Chicago house music Ultraviolet finds Kid Sister teaming with Cee-Lo and Estelle as well as producers like A-Trak, Spank Rock’s XXXchange, DJ Gant-Man and more.I was able to check out some of the tracks prior and I enjoyed it a lot.

It’s been a long time comin’ for the kid, but the girl with the pro nails has finally released her much anticipated (if that’s the right word) album – Ultraviolet.

The album is available via iTunes, Amazon, the Fool’s Gold online store, and she’s coming hard with a bunch of tour dates too (but unfortunately it looks like it’s US-based only, check it on on her myspace).

We’ll have to see if the momentum is still there, the hipster market isn’t the most loyal bunch, you know.

kid sis making her network debut. performance wise…meh, but good for her. flosstradamus helped her out on stage and those dancers are just downright weird – it’s in their faces. if you had to sit through a 45 minute set watching those two gyrate without blinking as if they had no bones nor nervous system, you’d be weirded out too. ultraviolet drops tomorrow.

Us at B&N, especially me and Chelsea, are HUGE fans of Kid Sister! We love her! She’s just amazing! & I can say she made a great contribution in my getting over that nasty break-up! So Chelsea made a post about us anticipating her coming back out because Pro Nails, Southside, Switchboard, and Control were just making the wait worse! KS read that post and told me, “No need to fret! My single was coming soon” (not her exact words, but I look at her like my Juking Superhero, so why not make her sound like one). So we patiently waited….and waited…and not too much later, Right Hand Hi was leaked. I almost jizzed my pants from all the excitement! Downloaded it off some random blog, and was a happy camper. That was a couple months ago. Noooooow, KS has come out with a video for Right Hand Hi!

UV-sensitive beads contain pigments that change color when exposed to ultraviolet light from the sun or certain other UV sources. The electromagnetic radiation needed to affect change is between 360 and 300 nm in wavelength. This includes the high-energy part of UV Type A (400-320 nm) and the low energy part of UV Type B (320-280 nm). Long wave fluorescent type black lights work well; incandescent black lights and UV-C lamps will not change the color of the beads.

The dye molecules consist of two large, planar, conjugated systems that are orthogonal to one another. No resonance occurs between two orthogonal parts of a molecule. Imagine two planes at right angles to one another, connected by a carbon atom. When high energy UV light excites the central carbon atom, the two smaller planar conjugated parts form one large conjugated planar molecule. Initially neither of the two planar conjugated parts of the molecule is large enough to absorb visible light and the dye remains colorless. When excited with UV radiation, the resulting larger planar conjugated molecule absorbs certain wavelengths of visible light resulting in a color. The longer is the conjugated chain; the longer the wavelength of light absorbed by the molecule. By changing the size of the two conjugated sections of the molecule, different dye colors can be produced. Heat from the surroundings provides the activation energy needed to return the planar form of the molecule back to its lower energy orthogonal colorless structure.

Although UV light is needed to excite the molecule to form the high-energy planar structure, heat from the surroundings provides the activation energy to change the molecule back to its colorless structure. If colored beads are placed in liquid nitrogen, they will not have enough activation energy to return to the colorless form.

The UV detecting beads remain one of the least expensive qualitative UV detectors available today. They cycle back and forth thousands of times.
