British Vogue’s December’s issue brought on a strong sense of nostalgia for me. A specific article, The Secret History of London Fashion Week, chronicled LFW from the `80s to present. After reading the piece, an abundance of emotions got my creative juices flowing, and a whirlwind of images fled through my mind. Truth be told, I had not really known LFW until recently but I remember the iridescence that fashion had as a whole. In the article, a series of designers, supermodels and buyers went into detail about the many tribulations the show endured over the years. But the focal points – Lynne Franks, a major PR Director and Stevie Smith – the mastermind behind collection Body Map, were the most inspiring. It was they who- with the exception of Vivienne Westwood and her line – were trailblazers for what London fashion was to become.

“Our LFW debut was called Cat in the Hat Takes a Tumble With the Rumblefish,” mused Smith. “We created a way of dressing using jerseys and sweatshirts that wasn’t just for skinny people, we had old, young, fat and thin on the catwalk. Even my mum.” His vision was beyond making pretty clothes and being conventional. Body Map was a breakaway from the norm other Fashion Designers were concurring with at the time. Even Franks’s concept was avant-garde “I persuaded one my clients to sponsor a tent [in Olympia] and up it went. The lawn collapsed after a few seasons and we had to move, but this marked the start of a new mood in fashion – it was fun and funky and young.”

Though it’s not quite as prestigious as fashion week in Milan or Paris, London Fashion Week is still the best place to showcase collections of both old and young. Matter of fact, London is ahead of all fashion corners for cultivating fashion design.  But the `80s and early `90s were a pivotal moment in fashion, as most designers of today who are creatively schizophrenic draw inspiration from fashion of that time. And not just from London, during the `80s fashion on a global scale became so baroque that the concept of colours and shapes held no barriers. The more abstract your dressing, the better. This was a philosophy that resonated with the fashion elite, rock stars and the hip-hop scene.

Body Map is a proven testament of playing with design concepts waywardly, and boldly. There’s fierce determination to make a statement in the collections. A great prime example of this is this piece worn by Uma Thurman:

As we move into modern times, Body Map’s concept was applied rather unconsciously by Toronto-based fashion designer Blaine Degannes of Rain Anthology:

Considering Dagannes had no background in fashion, I reckon his fashion history was extremely limited. Maybe if he did more research, it would have been easier for him to connect the dots. A reviewer of Toronto Fashion Week (where Dagannes debuted) stated his line Caribbean influenced, I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing, but it’s good when a fashion designer is influenced (much like Stevie Smith) but their upbringings. Degannes has the right idea, just not at the right level.

I do feel sorry for the pioneers who scavenge for talent now, the problem with a lot of fashion designers (much like aspiring fashion journalists) is that they’re too consumed with being something they’re not. They’re either overly processed and pretentious or stiff and dull. But all isn’t lost.

Russian designer Alexander Terexov takes the same concept and adds a resort feel to his Spring/Summer 2010 collection.

It’s safer, and glossier. But it doesn’t stand out. It’s a collection constructed for fashion-conscious pretty girls who like pretty things.

However, my when eyes trail to UK-based Ziad Ghanem’s spring/summer 2010 collection and it gives me hope. Not just because I like punk, but because his collection is a sign of the times. With the state of the economy, we’re looking for inspiration and he gives us that by taking the Body Map concept and revitalizing it:

Very British, very fun. That’s the word! Fashion was supposed to be fun. It’s okay if historic elements are prevalent. But while art and fashion are merged together, you’re supposed to enjoy wearing the garments.

Another favorite of mine is Berlin-fashion line C.Neeon who know how to the colour and print concept seamlessly.

Bare in mind they’ve been around for a long time, but the vision was there from the beginning, that’s why they’ve come this far.

Admittedly, I have a lifetime of fashion purgatory ahead. Before allowing my inner fashion feline to emerge, I held on to what I thought I knew: Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Balmain. I liked what I thought I liked, and that was what I knew, but thanks to discovering Body Map, the eccentric world of British fashion has given me a new outlook. Not just for what to wear, but for my fashion life in general.

Os Produtores. Musical de Susan Stroman que conta a história de um contador público que com um produtor fracassado da Brodway e a ajuda de uma suéca loira e gostosa  produzirão uma peça de teatro e lucrar com seu fracasso. Já foi adaptada, dirigida e estrelada no Brasil por Miguel Falabella e recebeu críticas nada favoráveis.

O filme não é lá grande coisa, mas mostra uma Nova York épica bem interessante e tem algumas cenas musicais engraçadas. Pra mim a melhor é Uma Thurman com “When you got it flaunt it”, que achei no vídeo abaixo.

Até hoje me pego cantando a música do contador quando estou fazendo algo que não gosto. “Very unhappy”.

Não sou muito fã de musicais, mas até que esse é bacaninha e acompanhado de algo comestível até que dá pro gasto.

Hayao Miyazaki is the crowned prince of family-friendly Japanese animation. His works have garnered international attention to the wonderful things going on in hand-drawn animation today, his art has been acknowledged the world over, and by all accounts, he’s the most accomplished person distributed by Disney at the moment. But did you know how long he’s been in the animation game? Try over 30 years!!! He’s been toiling to perfect his craft for longer than most of us have been alive, and he’s gotten so damn good at what he does that it’s hard to believe that his newer work is still hand-animated. But even back when he started making features, Miyazaki was still amazing. Today’s feature, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, is his first feature, and it is head and shoulders above anything else that was happening at the time. It’s a strong, pointed parable about the damage we’re doing to the environment and the consequences it could have later down the road.

1,000 years after the end of the world, humanity lives on in a fractured state. There are pockets of people left who have learned to live in harmony with nature from the mistakes their kind has made in the past. But in between these pockets lies the Sea of Decay, a noxious condition that covers the rest of the known world. It’s very existence is poisonous to humans, and it has hindered humankind from expanding its territories ever since. In this tattered world, we follow Nausicaa, a precocious young woman who is the princess of the Valley of the Wind, a peaceful settlement ruled by her father. She is trying to find a way to rid the world of the Sea of Decay, but her research is hindered one day when the settlement is visited by a crashing airship. The airship contains a prisoner that Nausicaa rescues, and the prisoner tells her that she is the princess of far away the kingdom of Pejite, and that the cargo the ship was carrying must be destroyed. And then she dies. Awwww…. So the cargo the princess was talking about was from the greedy empire of Tolmekia, as was the airship, and what it was carrying happens to be a deadly warrior embryo, a weapon from the war 1,000 years ago that could threaten the very safety of the earth. Things get crazy when Tolmekia invades the Valley for the warrior embryo, but Nausicaa won’t go down without a fight! She will do whatever it takes to save her family and friends and make sure the Tolmekian army doesn’t try to awaken that evil, evil thing in their midst!

I like this one a lot. Nausicaa is a strong, smart female character who makes it very easy to love her. She has a lot of heroic qualities, but she doesn’t lose her childlike essence, which seems to be a theme of Miyazaki’s work. You don’t need to be an adult to be a hero who cares about people in a mature way, and he also feels the importance of keeping that childlike wonder alive. Now that I think of it, he’s also very feminist, as well. I can’t really think of that many male Miyazaki protagonists; they’re there, but not nearly as prevalent as the women. Nausicaa is really a prototype of what we would see in the future from Studio Ghibli; powerful family-oriented fantasies about the importance of life above power and greed.

The animation is that of a bygone age. You won’t likely see this unique style of drawing nowadays. Anime, like American animation, goes through cycles, and the 80s was a time of incredibly thin, almost gaunt women, a non-descript male anatomy, and doe-eyed little girls with constant triangle-shaped open mouths. There isn’t as much detail here as in newer animation, but there are touches here that are epochal but beautiful nonetheless; some of my favorites are the look of objects either dirty or scored by fire, which use an unmistakable line effect needing an artist’s steady, careful attention. Nausicaa is full of attention; from the exquisitely designed post-apocalyptic Sea of Decay to the pristine Valley of the Wind, from the most insignificant passerby to Nausicaa herself there is so much care given to this film and its look. It’s just so well done.

The American voice acting is a mixed bag. I wish I could’ve been in the booth when Patrick Stewart delivered his performance as Nausicaa’s father. What a voice acting champ! I almost begrudge how he doesn’t really have to steer out of his normal range, but his voice is so damn robust that you can’t really stand against it. It’s a force of nature, and when you consider that his character’s the leader of the tribe tied to nature, it only seems more fitting that his strong, commanding voice make a splash. Alison Lohman’s Nausicaa is a little flat. I’m not sure how old she was when she recorded this, and I don’t want to bash a child, but I will say that there’s not really enough character in her voice to carry such a larger-than-life heroine. Oh, well, she eventually redeemed herself in Drag Me To Hell many years later, so all is forgiven. Uma Thurman is Lady Kushana, leader of the Tolmekian army and a real firecracker. THIS is what I mean when I say you have to have some character. She’s not too hammy, but she really lets loose and has fun being a villain. Kushana is a real bitch and Thurman obliges that aspect of her, so hearing her get into villain mode really put a smile on my face.

Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind is, like all Miyazaki films, a unique experience. You’ll never see something quite like it. There’s something for everyone in the family, and even something for jaded film snobs like me. It still has a lot to say to the people of 2009, even from 25 years in the past, and with a magnificent score by Joe Hisaishi and a burgeoning American voice acting crew, I would be inclined to listen. Even if you don’t normally like Miyazaki, check this one out; it’s pre-Studio Ghibli, so you might find it to be a refreshing break from his upbeat rigamarole. This IS a post-apocalyptic film after all. I give Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind 8 1/2 smooth Patrick Stewart line reads out of 10!

Quentin Tarantino may be many things — perverted, profane, whipsmart, cocky, a little too enamored with his own cleverness — but subtle he is not. He’s not even in the ballpark. Matter of fact, if that ballpark blew up, he wouldn’t hear the sound for another three days. Nah, Tarantino’s a guts-glory-chicks-and-explosions kind of director, and that imagination of his? In the name of Le Royale with Cheese does it dream up some wild-n-twisted trips.

Mark ”Pulp Fiction” down as one of the wildest. Every nanosecond of this humdinger’s 154 minutes contains something warped/crazy/effortlessly cool to behold: philosophical discussions about foot massages, the nature of miracles and a gold watche that has been places no watch should go; murders both coolly calculated and comically accidental; a frightful drug overdose; kinky sex (think S&M with an Alabama drawl and a gimp); and, last but not least, a sinfully delicious $5 milkshake. Random as this catalogue seems, Tarantino’s film is far more scattershot. The action doesn’t adhere to a simple timeline; instead, there are three stories that run parallel, then smash together, then diverge only to reconnect in ways that boggle the mind upon repeat viewings. “Pulp Fiction” is a genius noir/gangster combo that keeps us guessing. Guess long enough, though, and patterns start to emerge from the madness.

Sort of. Since Tarantino makes it nearly impossible to understand how these stories pool into a cohesive ending, let’s tackle one beast at a time. First, there’s “Vincent Vega and Marcellus Wallace’s Wife,” the tale of L.A. hitmen Vince (John Travolta) and Jules (a perfeclty cast Samuel L. Jackson) heading to do a job ordered by their loose-cannon boss Marsellus (Ving Rhames). Since Marsellus recently threw a guy out a high-rise window for giving his wife Mia (Uma Thurman) a foot massage, Vince has the jitters about taking her out on the town. His plan is simple: “Chew my food with my mouth closed, laugh at her fucking jokes, and that’s it.” Of course, trouble has a tendency to follow Vince, so things don’t go that smoothly.

Smoothness doesn’t much like Butch (Bruce Willis) either, which we discover in ”The Gold Watch.” A talented boxer with a sweetly innocent girlfriend (Maria de Medeiros), Butch shovels some dirt on his own grave by winning the fight Marsellus paid him to throw. But his neat double-cross turns messy through a series of freak coincidences, the most interesting involving two pawn shop owners who plumb forgot to pack their manners (not to mention their morality) when they left the Deep South. ”The Gold Watch” leads into “The Bonnie Situation,” a conclusion of sorts where Tarantino himself shows up as Jimmie Dimmick, a pal of Jules who begrudgingly agrees to help him clean up an accidental hit (“my gun went off! I don’t know why!” insists the a brain matter-spattered Vance) with help from Winston Wolf (Harvey Keitel). What’s on Wolfe’s business card we can’t be sure, since the terse mystery man only offers “I solve problems” as his job description.

It’s offhand comments like these that demonstrate one of Tarantino’s greatest strengths: revealing character traits with one or two stray lines of dialogue. He’s a student of human nature, and he knows the ways people fill time by arguing over whether foot massages are sensual or wondering what cheeseburgers are called in France (see above). And yet everything these characters say tells us something about themselves or the story. Christopher Walken, in his lone scene, delivers a howling-good speech that seems like comic relief, but the subject — the gold watch — comes back into play. Jules spouts a nonsensical version of Ezekiel 25:17, but it reveals his own moral code. Thurman, who finds jumpy loneliness in Mia, parlays a terrible joke about tomatoes into a real connection with Vince. Haphazard though they seem, these lines are the threads that knit everything together.

What else dazzles about “Pulp Fiction”? There’s the abundance of lurid violence — much of it comical (including an uncomfortably funny rape scene), some of it truly shocking, none of it gratuitious. Jackson and Travolta are one hell of two-man team, while Willis registers a pulse and Eric Stoltz has wit to burn. Ultimately, though, it’s the manic, fearless force of Tarantino that makes “Pulp Fiction” a sweet, sweet joyride, indeed.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Robert Pattinson to Star With Uma Thurman in 'Bel Ami'

The rumor mill was buzzing earlier this month with news that Nicole Kidman was going to, once again, go for the younger guy and star opposite Robert Pattinson in the adaptation of Guy De Maupassant’s Bel Ami. While it turns out that Kidman isnot taking the project on, another famous blonde is. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Uma Thurman will star opposite Pattinson, and Kristin Scott Thomas has also joined the roster.

The film will star Pattinson as George Duroy, an aspiring journalist who finds his success by bedding many of Paris’ rich and powerful women. Thurman will play Mme Forestier, the married woman who sparks his ascension and later marries him, while Thomas comes into the picture as “a socialite who falls for Duroy, becoming clingy in the process.”

Now, much has been said, or argued, about Pattinson’s talents as an actor, and I’d say this will be the ultimate test — whether he can hold his own against Thurman and Thomas. Pattinson won’t be able to hide behind sparkles or quirky, mustachioed mannerisms this time around! Both have considerable talents, although Thurman in particular is long overdue for some meaty and buzz-worthy dramatic fare (it’s also about time she got into some retro wordy romance as well, a la Henry and June). The drama will shoot next year in Paris.

This movie is looking better and better.  I’m still not excited about the American setting, but I’ll live with it.  The cast is looking great.  Uma Thurman looks pretty outrageous.  I don’t look forward to Pierce Brosnan’s transformation.  Rosario Dawson is looking great, I wish she got better roles, it seems like she doesn’t get in enough good movies.  The kids look OK, I can imagine that the girl is going to reach a Hermione level of annoying very quickly.

My husband and I like to recast classic movies while relaxing on Friday nights with a bottle of wine. We were trying to think of a good 90s flick to recast with today’s actors, and I think Pulp Fiction would be a good one.  Here’s a little inspiration for your own recast:

Man of the moment Twilight star Robert Pattinson will be joined by a few ladies in his next film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Uma Thurman has joined the cast of Bel Ami.

Kristin Scott Thomas has also joined the cast alongside Pattinson for this adaptation of the Guy de Maupassant short story. The film will revolve around journalist George Duroy (Pattinson) who rises to the top of Paris’ social structure due to his ability to charm and bed the Parisian female elite. I’ve not read that particular Maupassant story but I have read lots of his short stories due to the fact they had a Lovecraftian feel to them, especially Le Horla (which, according to Wikipedia, was an inspiration for Lovecraft’s Call of Cthulhu. I’d have to check dates and things though) which he wrote while dying from syphilis.

Thurman will portray the wife of Duroy’s friend who helps Duroy climb the social ladder and, who later becomes his wife. Thomas will play a woman who falls madly for Duroy. Theater director Declan Donnellan will make his feature directorial debut on the film, which is scheduled to start filming in Paris next year.

It was previously reported that Nicole Kidman would star alongside Pattinson in the film and, while she was offered the role, the deal fell through.

Okay Twilight fans don’t hate me, but I don’t really dig Pattinson as an actor. I haven’t really see him do much about from pout and look a bit moody. It sounds as if Bel Ami could have quite a range involved so it may push Mr Sparkle and improve his old acting chops. Anyone else with me on that?

// On a day that the new trailer for Robert Pattinson’s first post-”Twilight” film, “Remember Me,” hit the web, the “New Moon” star has finally found his leading lady for his next film.  And no, it’s not the much-rumored Nicole Kidman.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Uma Thurman will star opposite Pattinson in “Bel Ami.”  Based on the famous Guy de Maupassant short story, “Ami” follows young journalist George Duroy (Pattinson) who deviously jumped from the bed of one of Paris’ most influential women to another to make his way to the top.  Thurman will play the wife of a friend of Duroy’s who assists him in is ascent and later becomes his wife.

Also joining the cast is Kristin Scott Thomas.  The Oscar-nominee will play a socialite who falls for Duroy, but just can’t let go when he’s ready to move on.

Thurman will appear next as Medusa in 20th Century Fox’s “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.”

Pattinson stars in this weekend’s expected blockbuster, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” and in next summer’s “Remember Me.”

“Bel Ami” is expected to begin shooting in Paris next year.

Here is the new trailer for the Percy Jackson film. It is based on a series of kids books by Rick Riordan. My son loves them and I’ve read the first one. It is a good kids book, but does follow the Harry Potter template to some extent. It is also a tad predictable, but that is probably down to age and having read many other books.

However, there are more monsters, Gods and smiting in the Percy Jackson books. Kids dig that. I suppose you could also compare it to a modern day Clash of the Titans.

This new trailer gives you a better idea of what the story is about, plus it shows some of the creatures including Uma Thurman as Medusa (apparantly iPhones have superceded shiny shields!). The trailer also shows Pierce Brosnan as Chiron, Rosario Dawson as Persephone and Logan Lerman as Percy. However, the film also features Kevin McKidd, Sean Bean, Steve Coogan, Joe Pantoliano and Catherine Keener so there are plenty of talented actors involved.

Trouble-prone teen Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out school – but that’s the least of his problems. Now, Percy and his friends must embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true thief, save Percy’s family, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Desde hace algún tiempo se viene utilizando la palabra ‘literalmente’ de forma incorrecta, prescindiendo de su significado, solamente para dar énfasis.

Así, hace poco, en un partido de Rafa Nadal, el comentarista nos dijo que ‘Rafa Nadal se está comiendo literalmente a su rival’.

Sería una de esas noticias que años después se comentan y todo el mundo recuerda dónde estaba y qué hacía, como lo de las Torres Gemelas, la muerte de la petarda de Lady Di o lo del Muro de Berlín. Cómo Rafa Nadal, en mitad del partido, saltó la red, se acercó a su rival y comenzó a devorarlo (suponemos que, como Hannibal Lecter, empezaría por la cara):

- Jo, yo estaba en casa, y me llamó mi mujer y me dijo: ‘deprisa, deprisa, pon la tele, que Rafa Nadal se está comiendo al tío que jugaba con él’.

- Pero cariño – le dije – eso lo hace siempre, es un campeón.

- Que no, joder, que se lo está papeando, nadie se atreve a acercarse, esto parece cuando Uma Thurman liquida a todos aquelllos chinos, deprisa, ponlo…

- ¡No jodas!

A veces me alegro de no ser periodista y ser inglés y boticario. La única cosa que me hace dudar es si llamo a las quinolonas en masculino o en femenino. En la caja lo pone en masculino pero yo no lo aprendí así. Realmente hasta ahora había vivido tranquilamente con ello, pero mi médico me recetó una/o. Cuando te la (o lo) metes en tu cuerpo la duda hiere.
