We’ve seen a small resurgence of lightgun shooters coming out in the home rather than just in

We’ve seen a small resurgence of lightgun shooters coming out in the home rather than just in the arcades. In the past, the genre that got its start with classics like Duck Hunt and Operation Wolf has always had mixed success in the home for two reasons. The first is that these games are designed around and require various extra pieces of plastic to get the most out of them, most gamers will shy away from playing a game that requires them to choose and purchase one of a variety of add-ons (that are often as expensive as buying a second game).

The second is more cultural, you don’t directly control your character’s movement in these games. Everything is on rails, pre-set, and inflexible. In an industry where the past decade was dominated by games built around huge worlds the player could freely explore and conflicts with multiple solutions, games where you glide around blasting everything that moves have of course fallen out of favor with both critics and audiences.

With the release of the Nintendo Wii, however, this has changed. Since the “gun” is already present via the Wii’s unique motion sensing controller, developers are now able to more easily bring their arcade games home, as well as develop original games since there’s only one controller to take into account, and no additional accessories need be taken into account (though firearm-like “shells” have been released to use with the Wii remote, none are required for any of its lightgun games).

This has caused an interesting shift. Originally, these were the games you played if you wanted to turn off your brain. Now, to combat public conception of the primitive (or pure, if you want) nature of the genre, recent releases have almost as much plot as they do action, with a tremendous focus on making you feel like you’re part of the action and dealing with other character rather than just gliding through a shooting gallery.

As this generation of consoles kicked off with Perfect Dark Zero on the XBox 360, a game notable for its nearly incoherent plot and constrictive level design, the big budget action games have been gradually forgoing story more and more in exchange for a focused experience where one travels from setpiece to setpiece with just a few sub-Arnold caliber one-liners to keep things coherent. Even shooter franchises known for their elaborate backstory such as the Halo series or Gears of War present next to no information about their respective settings in the games themselves, focusing entirely on action.

Are lightgun games still primitive by comparison? The genre is now built around atmosphere and immersion, while the big budget stuff continues to shave away at depth to the point where each title has a single thing that makes it stand out, be it Gears of Wars’ cover system or Halo’s regenerating shields.

The three most recent of these games on the Wii are House of the Dead: Overkill, Dead Space: Extraction and the upcoming Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles. Interestingly the latter two were made because the developers wanted to tell a story first and foremost. Questionable story quality aside (all three involve megalomaniacs unleashing hordes of undead creatures that must be dealt with by the player and a companion), it’s a striking change in how we perceive game design that what was previously considered the most brain dead and base type of video game is now the one developers turn to when they want to build on a setting or developer their popular characters more. All three games take place prior to “current” events in their respective franchises, and all three feature almost as much banter as they do bullets.

All three games also introduce their own systems of tracking the player’s skill, upgrading one’s weapons and other things to keep the player coming back. All this while still maintaining the core gameplay of the genre, right down to each being gratuitously ripped off from an exploitative subgenre of cinema (be it House of the Dead invoking Euro-trash zombie flicks or Dead Space invoking, uh, Dead Space).

About a month ago I stole the kids Wii. A couple Wii games had flown by my radar and I wanted to give them a try and give the Xbox a break.

To start with, I will say in the beginning I liked the Wii and was completely taken with its motion controls. Mrs. Smirk had went and bought one the first Christmas they came out. This was during the initial Wii shortage and none of the stores were taking reservations. Instead, lines were forming outside of Gamestops and Best Buys at 4am in the morning when rumors began circulating that a delivery was due in. Usually the delivery was something like 6 Wii’s, not nearly enough to satisfy the small crowds and most everyone went home disappointed and empty-handed. (We never actually participated in these camp outs, but Mrs. Smirk would sometimes see the hopeful people sitting in their lawn chairs outside of the Gamestop on her way to work those chilly November mornings.) No doubt most of those Wii’s were probably on ebay within a few hours at a starting bid of $600. Mrs. Smirk finally called Gamestop on a whim one morning just before it opened and they had just gotten in a surprise shipment that very hour and although they couldn’t hold it for her, if she beat her ass to the store she might be able to get one since nobody else knew yet that they had them. Mrs. Smirk cruised down I-77 at nearly 100 mph for this little machine – and that is the story of how we had a Wii the first Christmas it was available. Disclosure: Just so that there is no confusion, Mrs. Smirk went through all of this for the kids, NOT for me.

Wii Sports was a fun game to play for everyone and in the first year I experimented with quite a few of the Wii titles available such as “Elebits” and and the Zelda game, but the only two games that I finished were Resident Evil 4 and Super Mario Galaxy, both of which I highly recommend.

Those were both played nearly 2 years ago. After finishing them I gravitated back to the Xbox 360 for most of my gaming. Not only are the Xbox’s graphical capabilities still able blow my puny mind at times depending on the game, but the overall quality of the games is higher. (There is a the term “shovelware” coined for the sheer amount of crap games out there that Nintendo allows 3rd party developers to release on its system as a way to make a quick buck. Read more about that here.) This is a really disappointing development, not just for the Wii, but for gaming in general as adults who have never really gamed and want to try it, more than likely are buying a Wii because of its lower price-point and because they’ve heard so much about it. After a month of initial play, they’ll probably find they never touch it again and decided based on their mediocre Wii experience that gaming is not their thing, having never experienced say the true seduction of GTA IV or even the Xbox 360 version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. And really, how is someone who’s not familiar with gaming supposed to know that there are actually major differences in these systems?

Of course, as a kids console for the under-15 crowd, there can be a lot of fun to be had with the Wii – and definitely some of the games offer way more multi-player, ‘party’ fun than the Xbox and PS3 put together. I think that’s where the Wii’s value really kicks in.

All of that being said, over the last year a couple of Wii titles had caught my eye so over the last month I put aside the Xbox to give these Wii games a try.

The first game was “Okami” which is actually a game that initially appeared on the Playstation 2 console to great reviews.

The concept of Okami is that you are playing a Japanese watercolor painting. Not only are you playing the painting, but you can actually stop the action and paint – as in say, paint a bridge to get across that river. Cool right? Right! No really, it is a beautiful game, and if they make a part 2, particularly for the Xbox 360, I will definitely give it a try.

The lush, gorgeous visuals – the way it does at times look like a watercolor come to life, is perfect. The problem? It truly is a kid’s game, but the even bigger problem is that even kids are going to get bored out of their minds with it. The plot contains a lot – and I mean a LOT – of dialogue. This dialogue isn’t of the cut-scene variety where at least you’re watching a little cinematic, a miniature movie, to keep you interested. Basically, the characters stop and talk. A lot. (Did I say that already?) This isn’t the kind of talking that you can at least step out of the room and make a sandwich for – no, basically a character spurts out a line, and then you have to press the “A” button, and then the next character spurts out a line, press “A”, and so on and so on, sometimes for as long as 5 minutes straight. So thick is the plot of this game that you end up not caring about it at all, you just end up pressing A repeatedly to get through it all. To get back to painting and running through your painting. Needless to say, I gave up. I may yet pick it up again on a rainy day because there is so much good going on with it, but as far as devoting myself to it as I try to do with most of the games I play – it has broken my cardinal rule for gaming. It managed to bore me.

The second game that caught my attention that I tried was Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.

Having recently finished the superb Resident Evil 5 on the Xbox 360, I had Resident Evil on the brain. Disregarding the movies, Resident Evil may well be the most interesting video game series ever made, with several games that do their best to interlock with one another plot-wise, and a slowly built and defined back-story that has developed over the years in such a way that its own trivia game could probably be made out of it. Sorta like the “Friends” of the survival horror genre.

There is a lot to love about Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. Its basically an “on-the-rails” replay of the many moments out of the entire series. (On-the-rails means that you don’t actually walk or do anything, the game does all your moving for you. All you do is point and shoot at the stuff getting in the way.) Although I haven’t even come close to playing all of the Resident Evil games, I did play part one on the Gamecube which takes place mainly in a spooky mansion, and the same mansion makes an appearance in the Umbrella Chronicles. It was like going back to visit an old familiar friend. Although not nearly the graphical equivalent of RE5, it is after all on the Wii, the graphics are adequate.

The other intriguing thing about The Umbrella Chronicles that needs to be noted is that it was made especially for the Wii and is only available on the Wii. Meaning mainly that Capcom designed this game specifically with the Wii’s strengths as well as its weaknesses in mind.

The “story” in Umbrella, as I said, basically is a replay of moments throughout the entire RE series. It is plotted in a very neat ‘tree-like’ fashion where you play as one character who will, at some point, run into another character, and you then have the choice to play that characters story arc/adventure. Just like the entire series, all of the various character stories interweave with each other, so at various points in the game you have often three or four different levels to choose from to play. So if you get stuck on one, you can just play another.

Sounds great, right!? It is! Except that each level has a “boss” and these bosses can sometimes take up to 10 minutes to kill. AND, there really is no skill required to kill them, just pointing your wii-mote and pulling the trigger over, and over, and over again for 10 minutes and hope you don’t get carpal tunnel. And then, as you get midway through the game, the bosses get harder which simply means that sometimes you will pull your trigger for 8 minutes straight and then the boss will rise up and stomp you, and since it is an “on the rails” game you can’t really dodge or anything, you just stand there and get stomped and die. And then begin again for another 8 minutes of finger-cramp inducing trigger-pulling only to get stomped again. So, after trying more than an hour of this with a single boss I stopped playing. bad, Bad, BAD game designers! There was a good post here about “boss fights” and a resultant discussion in the comments section that might be worth your time if boss fights have ever pissed you off.

The Wii is now back with the kids and I have no urge to play it except perhaps in a party-type atmosphere where the point isn’t to game, but to spend fun time with the people we’re with. I haven’t completely written the Wii off as Super Mario Galaxy 2 is on its way, but for the most part I have no interest. Its off my radar. Even the kids, for the most part, rarely turn it on anymore, the recently-turned 16 year old (Happy Birthday, Dudette!) much preferring Rock Band on the Xbox360 due to its immense amount of downloadable content and superior graphic presentation, and the recently turned 13 year old (Happy Birthday Dude!) preferring the Xbox360’s superior offerings whether that be Lego games or Call of Duty games without the pain-in-ass that can sometimes accompany the motion-controls. Funny thing, the one game he’s been replaying on the Wii this past week has been the Wii Paper Mario game which for the most part doesn’t even use the motion controls. Instead you turn the Wii-mote sideways and use it as a traditional controller. Imagine that.

Below is a game play video of Okami just because it is worth a look since nothing has been done quite like this before or since. I would recommend to give it a try as long as you are prepared for a ridiculous amount of dialogue. The rest of the game was a sheer pleasure to play.

This holiday the dead will rise again in Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. Exclusively on the Wii for $49.99(U.S.), The Darkside Chronicles tells a brand new story that combines events from Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil: CODE Veronica with new scenarios not yet revealed.

The newly released box art features fan favorite characters Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, guns drawn, ready to fight the zombies that lurk around every corner. Also featured is Steve Burnside from CODE Veronica, as well as a mystery character lurking in the shadows.

Playable as a single-player or two-player cooperative arcade shooter, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles features a more intense horror experience than its predecessor, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, which is one of the top-selling M-rated Wii games. With amazing graphics and new gameplay re-envisioned on the Wii, it is shaping up as one of the best-looking and action-packed games for the system this holiday.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
I am a Resident Evil fan; most of you are, I’m sure. I however came into the franchise a bit late and when I say late, I came in at 4. I played it on the PS2, and then I bought it for the Wii. I loved the game so I was like, “hey I should totally play the old ones too because duh that’s the right way to do things. “ Well I did and I couldn’t stand them because of that retarded control scheme. I couldn’t do it and I was sad. But lo and behold Umbrella Chronicles came out shortly after and it covers 0, 1, and 3. An added plus to this was it took you behind the story and the back stabbing of good ole Wesker.
This game is not your average shooter. This is a rail shooter; you use your nunchuck stick to nudge the camera in that direction so you can shoot up the environment and get ammo refills or some of the games hidden treats like secret files and new levels and other awesome tidbits. The game does a pretty good job of hitting key moments in the history and story of the games. It has that classic scene from the first game where they walk into the room and have their first encounter with the zombies and that dude’s head just rolls off.
Don’t worry; they didn’t tone the game down so your grandma could play it on the Wii. It’s just as hard as it should be. The boss battles are just as cool as you remember. And to make things even cooler you have co-op! I’m a huge co-op fan. I love to run through games with my buddies. Most of the levels are co-op. It’s just the ones with Wesker that you have to run through by yourself. I love this game it has huge replayability. You can sit down anytime you’re in the mood for some frantic zombie killin’. Oh and it’s one of the few games you use the Zapper on and get away with it. So I think I would have to give this game a good score of 6 bloody zombie heads out of 7, taking off a bit for the sometimes choppy graphics.

Nintendo hit the ground running with pretty marginal expectations. After last year’s performance, th

Nintendo hit the ground running with pretty marginal expectations. After last year’s performance, the gaming press hounded for less direction to the casual audience and more revitalization of classic Nintendo franchises. Well, Nintendo answered this year, to a degree, and the audience seemed quite pleased. Whether their offerings packed a punch comparable to what Microsoft presented yesterday or what Sony produced an hour later is up for debate.

Nintendo began their press conference with a composite video basically reaffirming their business strategy of making games for everyone, even greeting the collective audience as “everyone.” The phrase dominated Nintendo’s presentation, and as it should. A lot of people have shunned Nintendo’s new casual approach, and granted the company shouldn’t focus their entire strategy to please the lowest common denominator, but Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said it best: “Making it harder for newcomers to join is dangerous.” By opening up new possibilities to new gamers, Nintendo is expanding the videogame buyer market by, according to Iwata, up to 50%. However, Nintendo didn’t just focus on the “casual gamer” demographic, but also dropped two titles that their core fan base should buy and enjoy in droves.

To begin with their “games for everyone” theme, Nintendo started with a pretty big announcement by revealing New Super Mario Brothers Wii, a side scrolling Super Mario Bros. game visually similar to the DS game that dropped a few years ago. The Wii version, slated for release this holiday season, will feature new levels and new powers, but most notably the ability for four players to play simultaneously; in the demo the four players were Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad and Yellow Toad. However, the game won’t be strictly multiplayer as your friends can join in and leave the action any time through the main story mode. Whether this co-operative gameplay will support online interactivity remained unanswered, but Nintendo Wii strategy clearly points to online being included (sadly with friend codes of doom). While the demo looked fun and enjoyable, the amount of hype Nintendo put into this announcement in their opening moments (at one point they compared this game to the innovative leap forward of Super Mario 64) sort of made this announcement fall flat, building up what is essentially the Mario equivalent of The Legend of Zelda: The Four Swords. Nintendo also dropped some other Mario bombshells later in the conference, but those will come in due time.

Sticking to the Wii, Nintendo moved to their next big sales hog, the Wii Fit, revealing a sort of Wii Fit expansion pack akin to what EA announced with their EA Sports Active title yesterday. Wii Fit Plus, this Christmas’ slated improvement on Wii Fit, promises to make the Wii Fit experience easier and more attractive, adding six new exercises, 15 new balance games, and the ability to build your own custom workout without interruption. However, Wii Fit Plus hardly seemed like an evolution on the game idea and rather the chance to once again capture some easy bucks from soccer moms around the world.

Following Wii Fit Plus, Nintendo showed some hands on demos of the upcoming Wii Sports Resort and the Wii Motion Plus, which launches next week in a bundle with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10. The demo showcased two of the six activities in the game, archery and basketball. Archery utilizes the nunchuck to pull back on the bowstring, but unless the motion is being recorded in the Motion Plus attachment on the Wiimote it wouldn’t be able to read 1:1 motion. The basketball demo looked the best, featuring a 3-Point challenge where you actually reach down to grab the ball off the rack before shooting it. The demo featured a two player versus matchup, which presumably would be the most players who can play simultaneously with basketball. The game will also feature a redesign of golf from the original Wii Sports as well as table tennis, sword fighting, and a disc tossing game. After the demo, Nintendo listed four other Wii Motion Plus titles in Tiger Woods, Grand Slam Tennis, Virtua Tennis 2009 and Red Steel 2, all of which have long been announced.

Nintendo later pushed upcoming third party support for the Wii in Sega’s The Conduit, Capcom’s Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, and EA’s Dead Space: Extraction, all coming out this year and all shooter games. Fans of Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles will be instantly familiar with Darkside Chronicles, which basically takes the same formula as Umbrella Chronicles but applies it to what appears to be Resident Evil 2 and Code Veronica’s storylines, as well as some brand new story stuff exclusive to the game involving Leon. For those who aren’t familiar with Umbrella Chronicles, the game essentially takes the rail shooter gameplay style of Time Crisis and House of the Dead and applies that style to the stories familiar in the previous Resident Evil games. Dead Space: Extraction looks like a first person shooter prequel to the events of PS3/360’s Dead Space from last year, and from the trailer looks to have identical environments and enemies, which may bode poorly for the title as it doesn’t look or feel anywhere near as atmospherically eerie or organic as Dead Space. As for the Conduit, the trailer looked quite underwhelming, looking like some amalgamation of every futuristic first person shooter made ever. None of these games appeal to the mass market fanbase that any first party game would, or a third party game on Microsoft or Sony’s consoles.

Nintendo then showcased a big portion of their presentation to RPG games, incorporating the idea of using the Wii Motion Plus with RPG games, though not showing anything currently in development to utilize this feature. However, they did showcase two third party power titles in Final Fantasy: The Crystal Bearers for the Wii and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days for the DS. For Final Fantasy, the game looked great, but like most of the Nintendo FF spinoffs it will probably lack the sales and mainstream popularity of numbered FF titles. Kingdom Hearts DS, on the other hand, could potentially be a big DS pusher for PS2 RPG fans who haven’t quite given into the DS’s vast RPG array yet. Kingdom Hearts has seemingly stolen the RPG throne from Final Fantasy in recent years, and the DS version looks to be just as gorgeous as its PS2 counterparts, an impressive feat for a game on a system like the DS.

On the first party RPG front, Nintendo unveiled the upcoming Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, already released in Japan but scheduled for a fall release in America and Europe. However, they only showed a trailer that was anything but informative and basically just a cluster bomb of random images that were incomprehensible. The big news came with the announcement of a return for the Golden Sun franchise, the first installment in the series since 2003’s Game Boy Advance offering.

Nintendo announced some other pretty underwhelming DS titles, all of which came heavily touted. James Patterson’s Women’s Murder Club takes the marginally successful PC series to the DS much in the way Mystery Case Files did last year. While most of the “core” gaming audience won’t be thrilled, this title probably means mega sales for Nintendo once again. Also included in the “casual” fray was Style Savy, a game directed to tweens and twenty-something girls that I can only describe as a virtual clothes shopping game. Finally, they announced a Ubisoft game titled Cop: The Recruit, which looks somewhat like a No More Heroes meets True Crime for kids, complete with an open world environment focussing on driving around and over the top storylines.

This opened to the DSi portion of the conference, which had little to do with the actual DSi itself, a huge failure for Nintendo in this conference considering they’ve lacked a true DSi pusher to this point, and still don’t have a concrete reason to buy a DSi at this point in the product’s life cycle. The only major DSi related announcement came in the form of Flipnote Studio, a sort of cartoon creator using the touch screen that users can publish and share over the DSi’s online functionality. During this feature, they spotlighted the ability to share content over the internet, though it wouldn’t seem like this would be a DSi exclusive feature for these games considering DS Lite has built in wireless as well. The two games spotlighted new Mario vs. Donkey Kong and WarioWare games, focusing the titles on user generated content that can be shared online with friends. The WarioWare: DIY (Do It Yourself) explanation sounded intriguing, allowing players to create their own minigames in what was referred to as being “as close to essential game design as any videogame has ever come.” But with any content creator, the execution of this feature will be its doing or undoing, and with no demo its unclear how good that feature will be. However, Sony’s LittleBigPlanet gave new hope to user created content that didn’t exist until now.

Nintendo’s most intriguing concept came in the form of their Vitality Sensor, a project Mr. Iwata previewed at the finale of his segment. Comparing the idea to that of Brain Age or Wii Fit, the Wii Vitality Sensor will in effect gauge your stress and comfort level through a series of biological readouts, though the only clear readout Iwata presented was heart rate in this brief explanation. While only a minor glimpse, the project served as another interesting step forward in Nintendo’s development. Iwata concluded by stating “when previous strict definitions of games are removed…the wonderful potential of our entertainment can be realized.” The Wii Vitality Sensor could be the perfect implementation of this philosophy.

Nintendo closed the show with two big announcements, though unfortunately only showed trailers rather than any in game footage. The first, and more impressive to me anyway, was a full sequel to Mario’s first full Wii adventure in Super Mario Galaxy 2. The gameplay looked mostly the same standard, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing as Super Mario Galaxy marks one of Mario’s best games ever, and one of the most interesting games ever in terms of physics and level design. The big news in the trailer was the inclusion of Yoshi as a fully rideable character, which adds a whole new level of gameplay to the same award winning deign of the first Super Mario Galaxy.

The other first party heavyweight announced was Metroid: The Other M, a co-developed game branching Nintendo with Team Ninja, the studio responsible for the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive franchises. Much like everything else shown not named New Super Mario Bros. Wii, all the E3 crowd was granted here was a trailer that just showed a cluster of unrelated Samus images going absolutely crazy. One shot during the trailer featured a first person view akin to the Meteroid Prime series, but otherwise every shot was either a cinematic or side view action shot. What type of gameplay will be featured is obviously up in the air as the trailer didn’t show much. What it did show was raging action, and lots of it. And knowing Team Ninja’s M.O., that will probably be the focus of the game. Nintendo showcased the joint effort by saying it will take the Metroid series in a brand new, more mature direction that Nintendo hasn’t ventured previously, though nothing in the trailer would indicate such a radical shift from the last few Metroid Prime games. The game recieved the biggest ovation of the day for Nintendo, but I can’t say I felt very impressed by it. Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: The Other M didn’t quite hold the magic of, say, a new Zelda Wii game, considering there hasn’t been a Zelda Wii property since the launch of the system, and Metroid and Mario have already been featured once since. However, there’s always next year to look forward to.

By Manda

Let me start off by saying I am not a Wii fangirl. I did not rush out and wait in line for one. The 360 is my pet system. I laughed at the pandemonium surrounding it; it brought back memories of Tickle-Me-Elmo. Don’t get me wrong- I enjoy the Wii- it just isn’t quite as necessary to my survival as my 360.

There are a few Wii games that I do, however, deem awesome. Today I will be covering one of my top 3- Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. For some reason, very few people liked this game as much as I did. I quickly became addicted- I thought about it all day and all night. I began demanding to customers that they get a Wii just for that game. I threw my Wiimote across the room the first time I beat it. Now, let me share with you the awesome.

The game covers Resident Evil Zero through Resident Evil 3. Leon Kennedy appears nowhere in this game, which left me a little miffed. Each chapter is divided into separate scenarios. All of the old enemies from the old games appear, including Tyrant, who really sucks. The best part of this game, in my opinion, is the fact that it’s a rail shooter. It reminds me a little of the old House of the Dead arcade games that used to be in the movie theaters. You move along at a pretty decent pace- but pay attention, because sometimes you’ll miss things you need, like a grenade launcher or that last file you need to get an S rank. Another completely awesome thing is the fact that your standard handgun has unlimited ammunition. Getting a perfect headshot is a lot easier in this game, if you have a steady hand. If you want to change camera angles, plug the nunchuck into the Wiimote and rotate the stick. I personally don’t use it because it detracts from that old arcade feel.

To be completely honest, I hate Wesker. At the very sound of his voice, my blood boils. He’s a self-absorbed jerk with no conscience. But, in this game, he rocks. He is the ultimate badass. At one point, you fight the Ivans. That was the toughest boss fight in the whole game because they’re damn near indestructible. And they have a big cannon. Wesker is probably the only character in the game who can handle them. His standard handgun is also a little more ballsy. I won’t ruin the ending for you, but I will tell you that it just made me hate Wesker even more. Thus, the Wiimote was launched into the wall, dangerously close to my window. I don’t believe in giving games ratings, like stars or numbers on a scale. But this game is just really flippin’ awesome. Everyone from the beginning gamer to the old pro will enjoy it, provided you like zombies.

Psst… there’s also a super-fun mini-game you can unlock where you get to shoot zombies like the ducks in Duck Hunt. Make sure you kill them though- otherwise, you’ll get mobbed by them. And those mother effers are quick.

Nintendo have jumped on the Resident Evil bandwagon and decided to re-release the Resident Evil remake and Resident Evil Zero from the Gamecube on the Wii.

They have also released an official blurb on The Darkside Chronicles, the sequel to the Umbrella Chronicles:

“Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles’s story is based on Resident Evil 2 and includes the popular characters, Leon S Kenney and Claire Redfield. Its on-rails style gameplay and active camera will create a more immersive “Chronicles” survival experience. As in the last installment, this is a first-person game with extreme shooting gameplay and interactive pathways. Filling in many of the missing pieces of storyline that were not covered in the original “Umbrella Chronicles”, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles will give hardcore fans the chance to re-live some of the most classic moments of the Resident Evil franchise, while allowing new players to take advantage of the intense action-horror experience only possible on the Wii.

Gamers can choose to take on their enemies with the help of an A.I.-controlled character or enlist the help of a friend to fight via two-player co-op. Adding new dimension and strategy to the arcade-style gameplay in the “Chronicles” experience, the new Evade system will utilize the Wii Remote for a more intense experience when fighting enemies.
Capcom’s new Resident Evil “Classics” line will allow the new audience who has embraced the Wii to experience some of the greatest games in the Resident Evil franchise for the value price of $29.99. Both set to launch this year, the remake of Resident Evil and Resident Evil Zero have been refitted to support the Wii Remote, giving the Wii audience easy access to the rich characters and in-depth storylines of the series and the chance to experience both games on a new platform.”

So I recently finished playing ‘The House of the Dead: Overkill’, and even though it was

So I recently finished playing ‘The House of the Dead: Overkill’, and even though it was way too short, it sure was fun. Here’s my review of the game.

I’ve been a fan of ‘The House of the Dead’-series for a long time, ever since my brother came back from his trip to Hong Kong back 1996 and told me about the arcade shooter he played there. Zombies, guns, lame ass dialogues, etc. I wanted to play the game so bad. Especially because I’ve been watching horror movies ever since I was a kid. So throughout the years, I’ve played every game from the ‘The House of the Dead’-series, and whenever I go to an arcade hall, I can’t leave without playing at least one game of the series. Hell, I even watched Uwe Boll’s movie, (no, I’m not proud of it…), because it was based on the game. And yes, I know there’s a second movie, but I don’t feel like watching that and shatter my dreams of this cool series. And I think I watched all the recent of zombie movies about a month ago as well (‘Land of the Dead’, ‘Day of the Dead’, ‘Diary of the Dead’, basically everything that ends with ‘…of the Dead’). So I got pretty exited when this game came out.

So what’s the game like? Well, it’s a rail shooter, so not much to say about the gameplay I guess. It’s pretty basic, you see zombies running toward you, and you shoot them and watch them lose limbs or explode into a puddle of red goo. Not much new, and the graphics…well…it’s a Wii game, what do would you expect?

Maybe, it’s just my TV, but this screenshot sure looks better than my TV itself. Maybe I should get an HD TV…hm…

But anyway, the graphics aren’t that good, the gameplay is pretty old school, so what is good about this game? Well, maybe you’ve seen the trailers already, but the game is in a totally different style than the other games. Below is a video of the developer’s diary, so you can see the style of the game a bit.

So in the game you play Agent G (from the other ‘The House of the Dead’ games) and Isaac Washington. The whole game revolves around the two of them going after a guy named Caesar and finally lead them to an
incestuous mad warden
. Yep, that’s right, there’s some weird shit in the game alright. But their whole trip toward the end is really funny. Here’s a little screen of the two main characters.

So on the left you see Agent G, the cool agent who’s even too cool to tell anyone what the G stands for. On the right we have Washington. This guy is basically Samuel L. Jackson when it comes to his vocabulary, only 10x worse. He drops a f*ck, motherf*ck, mutherf*cker or a combination of the three, along with some other bad ass words in every sentence. I personally think the dialogues are really really funny, but I’m sure some people may think it’s too much. But it’s a grindhouse-style game, sex, gore and violence is supposed to be there. The style of the game is just amazing, every mission is presented as grindhouse movie and there’s this very wrong country rock soundtrack. It all fits together very well and I really enjoyed it.

So back to the gameplay, the only new thing here is that you can purchase and upgrade weapons, and you can carry 2 of them on every mission. After every mission you get some more money to buy more upgrades. Another new feature is the slow-mo item. When you hit this item, everything slows down; and I do mean everything. Music, reloading, movement, etc. The funniest thing is that the music slowly starts to speed up again and you hear this fast forwarding in the music. Though I didn’t find this item very useful (it’s only useful if you play with the cross-hair so you have more time to aim), I just used it because I like how the music slows down.
Another huge difference with the previous games is that the boss fights are way too easy. The first boss puts on quite a fight, but the rest of them can’t seem to hurt the player at all. Compared to the almost impossible boss fights in the previous games, these are way too easy. But at least that means you can finish the game, because I think I never finished ‘The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return’ on my Wii, the boss fights are impossible. I remember putting a fortune into the arcade machines and still, I never finished either one of them.
Another thing I noticed is that when playing as Player 1, you get a lot more attacks than Player 2 does. And most of the time, it’s because the zombies are just outside of the screen, and all you see is an arm attacking you. It’s kinda annoying because it’s very hard to see that arm and even harder to shoot it. If they made the camera like ‘Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles’ it would already be a lot better. In that game, you could move the camera a bit even though it’s on the rail, so you can get a clear shot at things.
And one last thing, the game is very short, I mean, you can finish it in an hour or so? Though it’s longer than ‘Ghost Squad’ on the Wii (which was about half an hour long) it’s still too short. But you unlock the director’s cut after the original story mode, and I have yet to play that. Hopefully that one is a bit longer.

So yeah, the game is fun, the style is great, it’s just a bit short and the camera can get on your nerves. I would have rated it 4 stars, but because of the length of the game, it doesn’t deserve that.

Rating:

Kanon volume 1 arrived at my house today. I’ve watched the first episode to get a glimpse of how the English actors compare to the Japanese ones. If I’m being honest, I actually prefer the English actors. I mean, I do like Sugita Tomokazu, but the female Japanese cast is there to turn the moe up. While I like moe, it can slightly degrade the characters because you’re too busy thinking about how cute the girls are to genuinely care about them. Perhaps I’m oversimplifying it, but I don’t want to get into the moe debate again. It’s old, tired, and it doesn’t need to be brought up any more. Anyway, the English actresses do a very good job of toning down the moe, and actually making the girls sound like girls their age should sound. Christopher Patton is the protagonist, which is nice to see/hear. I half expected Crispin Freeman to take on the role because he’s equally good as Christopher Patton, and he’s like a English speaking Sugita Tomokazu. However, since Christopher Patton took on the role, I had no worries.

I just ordered Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles last night. I’ve completed Resident Evil 4, and that has been one of my favourite Wii games so far. However, I have yet to play any other Resident Evil game, so I will probably buy and play those before I get stuck into this in case of spoilers. If it has none, or very minimal spoilers, please let me know.

After many months, I finally got my butt into gear and bought the remaining two volumes of Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid. They both also arrived today. I haven’t even watched all of the first disc, but I’m taking my time with it. As expected, the English voice actors are spot on and I can’t ask for more. Incidentally, Christopher Patton is also the actor for the protagonist (Sousuke Sagara).

The second Full Metal Panic! novel, One Night Stand, also came today. I haven’t finished the first one yet though.

The first Resident Evil game for the Wii, Umbrella Chronicles takes place from the first person as your characters move through a fully 3D mansion. This action/shooter hybrid reveals the back story behind the fall of the Umbrella Corporation by exploring locations from past Resident Evil 0, 1, 2 and 3 as well as new never-before-seen locations, such as Umbrella’s stronghold. Using the Wiimote, you take aim at enemies and fire away. Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles combines first-person, light-gun style combat with interactive pathways, multiple weapons and new enemies to create an entirely new Resident Evil experience that could only be delivered on the Wii.Ign

Hot off the rumor mill, it has been reported recently that there may be a new SKU in development for the Nintendo Wii. The source of this rumor traces its way back to a blog post, claiming that he was contacted by a distributor in regards to a new Wii pack. Called simply ‘New Pack’, the UPC code(045496880088) can be traced back to being registered by Nintendo. The blog post goes further, indicating it will sell for $289.99 Canadian dollars(the current price).

What gives this rumor some footing is a statement Nintendo made during its E3 press conference – that they were planning on including the Wii Zapper light gun attachment to all Nintendo Wii packages this fall. Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, a rail gun shooter that will use the Wii Zapper, is due out in just a bit more then a month, and it seems like this would be an opportune time to announce the new bundle package. Combine this with an announcement that Nintendo was planning on making at the end of September(but still have yet to do), and this rumor seems to get even more appealing.

There are other theories as to what the new Wii package could possibly be as well – some speculate that it could also be a new color(something also promised by Nintendo), or perhaps even that a price drop is in store. Whatever it is, you’ll be sure to hear about it as more details are made available.

So I recently finished playing ’The House of the Dead: Overkill’, and even though it was

So I recently finished playing ’The House of the Dead: Overkill’, and even though it was way too short, it sure was fun.

So throughout the years, I’ve played every game from the ’The House of the Dead’-series, and whenever I go to an arcade hall, I can’t leave without playing at least one game of the series.

Rating:
