UMD Sophomore Morgan Place broke her own UMD record today by finishing 6th overall at the NCAA Division II national cross country championships. Place finished one spot higher today than she did with her 7th place finish in 2008. Place ran a time of 20:53 today and was 31 seconds behind individual champion Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific. Ali Paul of Minnesota State Mankato finished 30th.

The UMD women’s team finished 7th overall with a score of 294. The Bulldogs’ top 5 included Place in 6th, Michelle Sancartier in 79th, Bridget Hines in 87th, Alyssa Wendt in 95th, and Rachael Stack in 96th. Adams State captured the women’s title with 73 points to runner-up Grand Valley State’s 81. Missouri Southern finished 3rd with 104.

Sony’s ability to turn gold into lead has a long track record. It started with Betamax but continued with MiniDisk, Memory Stick, UMD, and now Blu-Ray. You’d think they won with Blu-Ray, beating back HD-DVD, but it was a pyrrhic victory of one army of muskets over another army of muskets -on the horizon is a bunch of guys with cruise missiles, machine guns, and Predator drones. If you go to the video rental store (they still have these, but not for long) you will see about two racks for Blu-Ray. Who wants to spend for that when you can get just about as good for a lot less. That’s what its all about -remember Pioneer’s LaserDisk? Videophiles cherish the quality and durability of this format that predated DVD’s, but it was a millionaire’s plaything. Not so much with Blu-Ray which is hampered by the fact that to get the movie, you have to go and buy the movie or order it and wait for it to be delivered. With Netflix, Hulu, and iTunes along with a host of others, satisfaction is immediate. I downloaded Star Trek in HD and watched it with great satisfaction in 720p on my HiDef computer monitor. 23inch monitor for two feet away is the front row.

Sony has too many competing interests and kills itself by handicapping its products. Or it fetishizes design over function and delivers actual 4,000 dollar laptops that can’t make a movie with their own digicamcorders (my personal experience). People sneer that MacBook’s don’t have BluRay, but do you want to spend the extra money for that blue plastic cover? Especially when you already own Star Wars in VHS and DVD?

People are getting the notion that content has value -not the plastic case or the shiny disk. This is where Sony fails in clinging to a dying business model rather than adapting. It is the giant three toed sloth struggling in a tar pit.

Here I have a sequel to a previously post about the PSP go(psp to go or not to go? ). I think it is

Here I have a sequel to a previously post about the PSP go(psp to go or not to go? ). I think it is interesting to see where the PSP is heading, because I think it is a great machine. When it comes to Sony’s latest edition of the PSP, the PSP go, I’m starting to be less impressed. To summon up some of my disappointments; I have following troubles with the missing UMD drive, the price and the lack of new features which should give me a better game experience. Pretty much in that order.

The missing UMD drive is the biggest issue I believe. I would be very sad if I had to buy my old games again, because I bought a PSP go when my current PSP broke. I would either try to get another PSP device with UMD drive or give up the PSP. I think Sony has been arrogant when it comes to the UMD drive, and not listen to the majority of the PSP audience who wanted the UMD drive to stay. The counter action are retailers who boycotts the PSP go, because they will otherwise lose a lucrative secondhand game market. Furthermore I have just read the sale of the PSP3000 are increasing, after the launch of the PSP go, so people apparently prefers the models with UMD drives.

I believe Sony’s big plan with removing the UMD drive, was to start selling games through their internet shop, a concept similar to iTunes. It is also a good idea, but I think they took a wrong approach. Instead of from one day to another forcing people to use their shop for buying games , they should have nice and easily making people used using it. Sony has wasted a lot of time and opportunities here, because they have had their web shop for some years now, but it have been so unattractive that I don’t feel like visiting it now, even thou I think it is better after the PSP go launch. Now Sony are beginning to start promoting something they have had 2 generations of PSP to promote, that is embarrassing.

My issues with the price is actually combined the lack of new features, it is way to expensive, a price is to close to a PS3, but that is another story. It is true, the PSP go have better screen, microphone and double working memory, but it is something which is less likely to improve my gaming experience compared to my PSP2000. I mean, it is sold as a handheld gaming console, not as a mobile multimedia computer. Okay, it is cool you can use the microphone for Skype, but then again, why not use your cellular phone? which properly also can Skype? And let’s face it, it is to big as a MP3 player. The PSP is good at 2 things, games and movies, and I don’t believe that PSP go gives more pleasure than PSP3000, which justifies 25% higher price.

Where does PSP go, go from here? I haven’t made my opinion yet. Searching the Internet and reading articles, I have learned that Sony claims that PSP go sales are rising with PSP3000. I’m at the same time reading statements from retailers, who are claiming that PSP go sales are bad. I have decided to wait a couple of month to make an opinion of where PSP go is heading. An indicator could be the rumors of a new PSP4000 with UMD drive under development.

Sophomore Morgan Place led the Bulldogs with her individual title at the NCAA II Central Regional Championships this weekend. Place ran the 6k course in 21:39, finishing 19 seconds ahead of runner-up Kristen McGlynn of Adams State. With her victory, Place becomes the first Bulldog in team history to win the Regional Championships. The top 6 women’s teams in the region qualified for the NCAA II National Championships. Place’s victory helped the Bulldogs to a 5 point advantage over 7th place Mesa State and to a birth in the NCAA II National Championships. This is just the 3rd time in team history that UMD will participate in the DII national meet. Team champion Adams State, runner-up Western State, Augustana (3rd), U. of Mary (4th), and Metropolitan St. (5th), will join the Bulldogs at the DII National Championships in Evansville, Indiana on Saturday, November 21st. Bulldogs Bridget Hines and Rachael Stack joined Place in the top 45 overall, finishing 39th and 44th respectively.

As stated several times before, I go to the University of Maryland (College Park). It’s one of those universities hellbent on promoting diversity, going as far as to say something ridiculous such as “even our squirrels are black” on tours given to incoming freshmen.
This is, of course, completely contradictory to recent rumors that, because of budget issues, “diversity”-promoting programs/centers face elimination.
But, what exactly is diversity. Personally, I believe that, because we are all one race (human), it’s relatively asinine to band together with people just because you are classified as black or white or whatever “race” or “creed” (such primitive language) you have been assigned, or ascribed to. This is because, well, race is a social construct designed to prioritize one group of people while deeming others inferior. (If you want evidence, look it up; there’s enough to make your head spin) Race is the thing that allowed for the Ku Klux Klan, the Nazi Regime, and countless other atrocity-committing groups to exist and instill so much hatred and fear. Race is the thing that has gotten many a man murdered. And “race” is the same thing that is still dividing us.
We need unity, not division through “diversity.” We must respect other cultures and desire to learn of/about them, as knowledge is, indeed, power. However, we mustn’t divide ourselves into all of these subgroups just for the sake of being different. Remember that racism and ignorance are still alive, and we as a people perpetuate it when we allow ourselves to be grouped into labels such as “black,” “white,” “gay,” or “straight.” Some people who believe that they are fighting the problem, are the problem. Rather, they are playing into the problem and distributing this venom to the masses.
We are all human, every single one of us. The sooner that we accept that there is no absolute difference between myself and a person of a lighter shade (or darker) than I am, the sooner we will finally achieve peace, unity and acceptance. We must step out of the comfort zones that have been placed upon us and see that there is no true variation between a “black” man and an “Asian” woman, besides superficial things such as the hue of skin they possess, and that women possess ovaries, vaginas, can bear children and produce breast milk–but that’s not really here nor there for the sake of this argument. All of the archaic ideas that one “breed” of people are superior to another are just that: archaic and should be dealt with accordingly.
We are all citizens of the world, and we are all human. It is time for us all to realize this and move forth with this idea.
But, this is not the view of the majority. Therefore, it will be viewed as heretical, revolutionary, and ultimately dangerous.

However, this is not to say that Maryland is let off the proverbial hook for these possible happenings. As an institution of higher learning, it is their job to provide the best, most well-rounded education that they possibly can. By merging schools that have nothing to do with one another (besides the “diversity” banner), the purpose of higher education is compromised. If this happens, no longer should the university claim that it is a full-fledged institution of higher learning. No longer should Maryland promote that it is “diverse” and accommodates for all heritages. No longer can it even say that it offers a complete education. To say that would be a blatant lie.

We can spend millions of dollars on renovations for stadiums, yet may not be able to keep women’s studies as a separate entity and still have overcrowding, Oakland Hall be damned? I think someone should reevaluate our new slogan.

University of Maryland: Unstoppable Starts Here…unless you’re black, a woman, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, Asian, Hispanic, Latino (there is a difference), religious, atheist, white, part of a Fraternity/Sorority, part of any extracurricular activity (sports included), a male, an out-of-towner, or an in-state student.

It’s time’s like these that I thank God that I’m so close to graduation.

It is the end of October when you have Halloween (not in my part of the world though) and college brochures coming to your town. Normally I don’t get much mail. Not much e-mail either. But since the college season began, I look up the mailbox twice everyday, each time with expectation. Today I had this UMD Brochure for me, in a neat white unfolded envelope.

The University of maryland Undergraduate Brochure

This is the second university, or should I say, second ‘well-known’ university, after Cornell, to send me a brochure/letter.

I liked the brochure. I had heard about the school, which makes it to the rankings; the location works with me; they have extra-curriculars; my testing scores are in (above actually) their 50% range; my GPA is near perfect – it seems a good fit. I will most probably be admitted if I apply. Yes, I will apply.

-X-X-X-

Some people can’t stand seeing other people happy. My alter ego is definitely one of them. There it was, ready to ruin the day.

So you’re going to apply to UMD?

You bet I am!

You’re serious?

Of course I am.

So what happened to MIT?

I still am applying to MIT. MIT might not admit me. But UMD would.

Then why apply to MIT at all? UMD should be just fine.

Because I want to keep a safety school. In case if all else fails, I will always have UMD.

You like the ‘M’ in the picture (referring to a picture of athletes standing to form an ‘M’, don’t you?)

Yes, I kind of like it. So?

Will you be able to live with it later if you knew that the ‘M’ might have stood for Massachusetts, but it doesn’t?

(Thinks for a while) Damn. You always screw me.

(Alter ego smirks – I so enjoy doing this to him)

And there it was. The summary of the day : I am not applying to UMD. I like the school, it has all I need, but I just won’t be happy there. Sorry UMD. And don’t you reject me MIT.

http://yuuji.wordpress.com/2009/10/29/pspn1000/

載好了，Ready to Go！

(Note: This is part one of a–hopefully–ongoing series of posts dedicated to me getting all old-timey and crap over shit that probably only I care about. I mean, it is a blog, people. What do you expect?)

Me during Freshman year at a charity basketball game in Richie Coliseum, the midget bastard child gymnasium type deal of Maryland.

Ah, Freshman year, the year where you’re thrown into the real world face first. This is the type of year that you will likely be deflowered in numerous ways: first time having sex, first time failing a major assignment, first time having a teacher that swears during a lecture while sober–just for the fuck of it, first time getting drunk, first time puking in a public toilet, first time waking up hungover–you get the gist.
I was part of the College Park Scholars program, which some would argue is the social equivalent of prison, as most specialty programs can be. You’re cut off from the general population in terms of living quarters. You’re allowed out a couple of hours a day to play in the courtyard that is “other classes,” only to come back to your cellblock, armed with only your thoughts, your studies, and a thirty pack of Natty Light you, somehow, managed to sneak past the Resident Advisors. Your free time is spend either playing beer pong or staging a jailbreak to view the outside worlds of Easton, as I usually did.
At Easton, affectionately (I think) known amongst some students from my graduating class as the “black dorm” (Most of the black students were clumped into the Denton Community. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional. Then again, the University did hold slaves, and still hasn’t offered much of an apology for it, so…), there was a world outside of Scholars, outside of beer pong parties, outside of walking back into your room and finding a drunk, half-naked girl passed out in your bed with someone else’s thong in her face because you weren’t there to, you know, prevent dumb shit like that from happening. Easton had parties with music and dancing and girls and liquor that wasn’t the hobo piss found at many college parties. Easton was a five minute bus ride from Courtyards, home of some of the most epic parties I’ve gone to. And Easton housed some of the people that shaped me into the person I am today.
My first escape from Centreville was within 24 hours of moving in. My roommates and I decided to head to the North Campus Diner and dine on what we considered some of the greatest food ever: food that was essentially free. After scarfing down some of the greasiest pizza known to man, I decided to head back to my dorm. And, that’s when I saw them: two of my friends from an overnight stay program I entered in after I was accepted to Maryland.
To be continued…

October 1st marked the new saga for Sony’s portable (and very potable) peripherals. PSPgo hit the markets in two fashionable colors with a less than fashionable price tag. At $249.99 (only $50 less than the more powerful and entertaining 120 GB PS3 Slim) the 16GB PSPgo sports a sliding screen, bluetooth capability, and the ability to only digitally download content via the internet. Mind you, digital content worked for Apple when they introduced the iPod and iTouch to the market, but there is one difference, iPod was introduced that way, PSP was not. Being a PSP-3000 owner (Slimmer PSP with built-in mic) I became terrified to find out that if I decided to “upgrade” to the PSPgo I would be throwing away all my precious UMD (Universal Media Discs)! Oh no! What about all those hours of game play that I have invested to just throw away? What about the joy of going to the store and buying that new game to make the drive home anticipating when I can begin to play? (that is if I make it home…there have been times I began to play in the parking lot before driving away!) Digital content is where we are headed, Sony has understood that and instead of waiting for us to get on board, Sony decided to nudge us with the PSPgo. Go ahead and buy one if you like, but I think I will just slip in a 16GB Memory Stick Duo Pro to my PSP-3000, Download some games and use my UMD’s until I run them in the ground…or atleast until Sony will let me transfer my discs to digital content. And when they decide to do that I’ll be sure you are the first 1-2 know!

UMD sophomore Morgan Place successfully defended her NSIC title this morning in Bemidji, MN. The repeat champion ran 21:48, finishing over 40 seconds ahead of runner-up Molly Clark of Augustana. Ali Paul of Minnesota State Mankato finished 3rd. UM”D placed 5 runners in the top 20 and all 7 finished in the top 30. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Augustana was able to put 4 runners in the top 10 and all 7 in the top 20, sealing the victory for the Vikings. This is the second year in a row the Bulldogs have finished as the NSIC runner-up to Augustana.

UMD looks ahead to November 7 for the North Central Regional meet in Nebraska.

James Krajsa of Minnesota State Mankato won the men’s race. The Mankato team finished 2nd, 32 points behind winner Augustana. Minnesota State Moorhead finished 3rd.

University of Minnesota junior Hassan Mead has been selected as this week’s Big Ten runner of

University of Minnesota junior Hassan Mead has been selected as this week’s Big Ten runner of the week. His 5th place finish last Saturday at Pre-NCAAs was the highest finish by a Big Ten athlete in the meet. This is the second time this season and 4th time in his career that Mead has been honored with this award. Mead was named the Big Ten runner of the week earlier this year for winning the Roy Griak Invitational and selected twice in 2008. The first of his career was after his runner-up performance at the 2008 Griak Invitational and the 2nd time followed his 3rd place finish in the 2008 Pre-NCAA meet, while setting a U of M 8k record of 23:33.

Unfortunately, after the Gopher’s 11th place team finish in the Pre-NCAA meet last weekend, they have lost their #30 ranking and have slipped out of the polls this week.

The Gopher women took a slip in the polls as well this week after finishing 6th at Pre-NCAAs. Their finish has dropped them 7 spots in the poll to number 15. The Gophers finished just one spot behind Illinois at last weekend’s race. A mere 8 points separated the two teams, which apparently was enough to raise Illinois 5 spots to number 13 and drop Minnesota from #8 to #15. Illinois is now the top ranked team in the Big Ten Conference.

DIVISION II

The UMD Bulldog women keep their #12 national ranking after placing 3rd at this weekend’s Oshkosh Brooks Invitational. The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships will be held this Saturday, October 24th in Bemidji, MN. The Bulldogs are currently the 2nd highest team ranked in the conference after #10 Augustana.

DIVISION III

The Bethel women’s team dropped from 11th to 14th in the NCAA Division 3 rankings after finishing 6th place in the Brooks Invite on Saturday. The Royals were led by Marie Borner, who finished 2nd overall with a personal best of 20:35. Borner has been named the MIAC women’s runner of the week after this weekend’s performance. This is the 3rd time this season Borner has been selected for the award. The next race for the Royals will be the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Halloween in Como Park, St. Paul.

Dan Greeno of the Bethel men’s team was named the MIAC runner of the week after winning the Brooks Invitational on Saturday. This is the third time this season that Greeno has been selected.

The Carleton women fell from 18th in the rankings to 20th after winning the Running of the Cows meet in Northfield, MN. Simone Childs-Walker of Carleton won the meet in 22:05. The 1,2,3 finishes of Childs-Walker, Laura Roach, and Alison Smyth helped the Knights to a 4 point victory over Division II team Winona State.

The St. Thomas women dropped from 21st to 23rd in the polls this week. Their next scheduled race is this Friday at 4:00 PM at the Lake Wissota Invite in Chippewa Falls, WI.

The St. Thomas men’s team rocketed up 11 spots from 33rd to 22nd in this week’s poll. The Tommies made their jump after finishing 4th place in last weekend’s Intra-Region Rumble hosted by Oberlin College. St. Thomas finished ahead of both Ohio Northern and John Hopkins, who were both ranked ahead of the Tommies. They now hold the 2nd highest rank of teams in the Central Region, just 2 spots behind #20 Nebraska Wesleyan. St. Thomas is now the top ranked men’s team in the MIAC, heading into the MIAC Championships on October 31st.

The Saint John’s men’s team dropped completely out of the DIII rankings this week. The Johnnies lost their #28 ranking after they tied for 15th place at the Wis-La Cross Invitational on Saturday.
