Maybe u’ve heard of him before…. maybe u havent. Either way Baba Ali is someone worth knowing about. This guy is doing great work for Islam.He’s spreading the correct info in a comic way….which makes for very attractive viewing.Baba Ali has his own set of videos which can be viewed on Youtube or Ummahfilms. Along with being the co-founder of Ummahfilms, he has also released a video series for children entitled  hurrayforbabaali.He has also designed two boardgames titled Makkah to Madinah and Kalimaat. Here I have posted one of my favourite BabaAli videos.Enjoy:)

We all know that it can be hard to be a muslim convert at times. Remember, just because you were muslim longer does not mean that you know more than a person that has just joined Islam. As well as remembering that converts won’t know every single thing about Islam once they convert, you have to give them time and be patient.  For example: I went to a Pre-Ramadan dinner the other day, and then a man walked up on the stage that has recently converted in the past 2 years, and had already memorized the Holy Quran. The man sitting next to him was muslim for over 40 years and had only memorized the 30th part of the Holy Quran. So my fellow brothers and sisters lets take this into consideration that we shouldn’t ever think that we are better  than another brother or sister in islam or even our non muslim friends because this is called pride, and pride is a very bad and dangerous thing to have and it is Haram, Inshallah I will continue about this topic on another post. (Because Im Getting Off Topic) But any way my brothers and sisters watch the video made by ummahfilms.

Entah ide darimana tiba-tiba malam ini saya terpikir untuk menonton kembali beberapa video-video dari ummahfilms di youtube. Sudah lama saya tidak mengikuti perkembangan program ummahfilms, terutama sejak serial dakwah pendek di youtube diganti dengan proyek film pendek “Tomorrow Never Comes“.

Well, mungkin anda sudah pernah melihat video-video pendek dari Baba Ali (bukan Alibaba), penggagas ummahfilms.com. Tapi kalau belum, anda layak meluangkan waktu untuk mencoba menonton. Tidak hanya substansinya bermanfaat, tapi cara penyajiannya dapat dikatakan sangat-sangat unik. Meski idenya adalah dakwah, kita tidak akan merasa sedang “diceramahi “. Yang terasa lebih seperti mendengarkan cerita dari rekan sejawat. Simple, menarik, nggak sok suci, “lucu”, tapi tetap mengenai sasaran.

Saya tidak ingat kapan persisnya saya menonton video-video tersebut di youtube. Yang jelas paling tidak sudah dua tahun (dua ramadhan), karena ada satu video terkait ramadhan yang ingin saya coba buat subtitlenya tapi selalu tidak sempat. Video pertama yang saya tonton kalau tidak salah adalah “Muslim at Jummah”, yang bercerita tentang kelakukan para jamaah shalat jum’at. Sejak saat itu saya menjadi penunggu setia kemunculan video-video dari ummahfilms, hingga kemudian serial video pendek tersebut selesai pada season 2.

Selama dua season tersebut, ada beberapa episode yang menjadi favorit saya. Sampai saya -saking niatnya- lantas mencoba menyiapkan subtitle untuk episode-episode tersebut dalam bahasa Indonesia, meski tidak sempat menyelesaikan semuanya. Episode-episode yang menjadi favorit saya antara lain :

1. Funny things at jummah, yang bercerita tentang beberapa kelakuan para jamaah shalat jum’at dan beberapa tips buat para khatib agar tidak membuat ngantuk para jamaah.
2. Distractions during shalat, pernah shalat terus ada anak umur 1.5 tahun lari-lari di sekeliling anda? Beautiful
3. That’s not hijab!, membahas segala macem bentuk dan versi “jilbab”, isu yang juga sangat relevan di Indonesia. When you watch this one, you’ll know what I mean.
4. How do you convert to islam, cerita tentang bagaimana Ali kemudian akhirnya memutuskan untu masuk Islam. Finale dari season 1. Bagian menariknya adalah, bagaimana rekan-rekan Ali yang beragama Islam justru membuat Ali tidak tertarik sama sekali dengan Islam.
5. The Art of Complaining, jika anda termasuk orang yang gampang sekali memprotes orang lain, yang satu ini bagus untuk introspeksi.

Those are my favorites, bukan berarti yang lain tidak bagus. Hampir seluruh video dan cerita kualitasnya sama. Hanya saja tidak semuanya relevan dengan situasi di Indonesia. But still, semuanya masih tetap enak ditonton.

I’ll try makin a How To tutorial article regarding ummahfilms subtitling.
The article will be divided into sections i.e:
1. Getting the video from youtube
2. Using the video converter (Super)
3. Using the subtitle editor (subtitle workshop/DivX Land Media Subtitler)
4. Publishing video to youtube
Makin these tutorial will cost me significant time (esp. step 2,3,4), so be patient bro /sis, i’ll do my best Insha Allah. I’ll set my target at the end of this month.
But for the easy part (first section), all you need to do is this.

GETTING THE VIDEO
1. Browse the video at youtube, e.g : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3o6kpCLDMVg which is the url for the 1st vlog (funny things at jummah) in english version.
2. Add “kiss” just before the “youtube” part of the url, similar to this http://www.kissyoutube.com/watch?v=3o6kpCLDMVg and then TADA! you’ll get a link for downloading the video directly.
3. Note that the video format is an .flv (flash video), to play it you need an flvplayer (get it here it’s free and also notice that you need to complete some requirements to run this software)
4. That’s it, you have the video and the player now
